I Had It All Wrong. But So Did You.

Let me first express the thoughts that currently reside within my head approximately 14 hours after the end of the 1st round of the draft: “Brilliant! But I’m still worried like hell.”

This is a significant progression from my total befuddlement, which accompanied what was perhaps the weirdest 15 minutes of televised draft history. In the midst of crickets chirping as Rich Eisen and the NFL Network crew tried to figure out what was going on, the Chiefs came out and picked at 26th (not the 27th pick they traded Cleveland for) a guy who virtually no one on the planet had talked about as a possible 1st round pick-up for them – WR out of Pitt, Jonathan Baldwin.

At the end of the day, I probably couldn’t have been more wrong in my prediction for what the Chiefs were going to do with their first pick of the draft. I had them probably taking Phil Taylor, but only because the best-fitting O-line prospects — particularly Gabe Carimi — would have already gone. In fact, Pioli and Co. passed on Carimi not once, but twice in the draft, and allowed Cleveland to trade up and take Phil Taylor with their original pick at 21. So there you go, I was as bad as Mel Kiper on that one.

There is a lot I can say in my defense, however. I can at least say that all of those out there who adamantly said Taylor was a 2nd rounder were also proven wrong, and I can take pride in the fact that, at the very least, he was picked in the exact spot where I said he would go. Furthermore, the fumbled trade that caused the Ravens to pass and cede the 26th spot to KC would have been a trade for Chicago to move up and take Carimi. So I wasn’t so far off in the placement of the players anyway.

But enough disclaimers and CYA, who is this guy that we ended up with?

Get ready for more frequent Mock Drafts Addicts. You’ll be getting a weekly dose of possibilities from us. By the time April gets here, we’ll have so thoroughly covered the first round that one of our Mock Drafts may actually have a few correct picks! It is my go round this time.

1.		Jimmy Clausen	Quarterback	Notre Dame	Yep. I’m going there. Look, the Rams have been drafting high for a while now. They usually go with the safe pick. Everyone is going to think they are crazy for passing on Suh but I think the Rams are going to look around at the teams in the playoffs. They’ll see names like Favre, Rivers, Manning, Brees, Brady and Warner. It is apparent you need a QB in today’s NFL more than ever. If the Rams don’t get one now, they aren’t getting one in this draft.
2.		Ndamukong Suh	Defensive Tackle	Nebraska	Detroit, already having a QB, pees their pants when the Rams take Clausen. Litterally pees their pants on their way to the podium to take Suh.
3.		Gerald McCoy	Defensive Tackle	Oklahoma	Tampa is now also freaking out because they had Gerald McCoy’s name circled on their draft board and suddenly Eric freakin Berry is available. They have planned their draft around the fact that Suh and Berry would be gone when they picked. The don’t gamble and they stick with McCoy.
4.		Eric Berry	Free Safety	Tennessee	Mike Shanahan won games with Jake Plumber as his QB. He can probably win games with Jason Cambell. He also isn’t stupid enough to go reaching for Sam Bradford here before he has a season to evaluate his new team. He is building a new program and Eric Berry is one hell of a start. No way does he let Berry slip to the Chiefs.

The Golden Rule Of The NFL Draft & How The Chiefs Might Violate It

The Chiefs have been blowing kisses to every player in the Top 10. It appears they don’t know what’s going to happen themselves…and in my opinion-they don’t.One possibility that hasn’t been discussed is a potential trade with the Ravens, a team that is absolutely desperate for a QB.

Steve McNair is as fragile as a graham cracker, Kyle Boller hasn’t done much but show a few flashes of luckiness before regressing and Troy Smith appears to be another Heisman casualty; light years away from being a starter. Along with the Falcons, and our Chiefs, the Ravens are in the “Needa Quarterback Club”.

The Ravens have the 8th pick, the 38th pick, and in the third round #99, then #106 right after us at #105.

(They would have had #71 too, but due to the McGahee trade a few years ago and later Marcus Stroud-they sent it Jacksonville’s way.) I highly doubt they would part with #38, but they might want to wheel and deal with the rest because they are at a total wild-card spot now. Here’s my projection in this scenario.

Somehow, the ‘Fins will get Jake Long. I challenge you to name a quality starter on their line off the top of your head. (Don’t cheat and Google-Blast me in the comments either…you know you couldn’t do it.)

At #2, the Rams need a DE in a bad way. Leonard Little alone can’t cut it and he’s getting old too. DE Chris Long seems to be a good fit. Between their two starting DE’s last year they had all of 3.5 sacks. Jared Allen could get that in one game. That being said, they could also go-go gadget Gholston which would just swap with the Jets at #6.Next up, the Falcons. They will take Glenn Dorsey at #3. Here’s why:

Falcons G.M., Thomas Dimitroff comes from New England. He essentially crafted that team by using his #1 picks on Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, and Ty Warren. Not only that, but they have not one, not two, but THREE second-round picks. (#34, #38 and #48) They also need a QB and they will likely get Brohm, Flacco or Henne with one of those.

#4 The Faiders- who don’t deserve bold; they take Run DMC because they are stupid enough to tie up $100 million in two guys who haven’t played 1 full game. One of those three precious second-round picks (#34) Atlanta owns came from Oaktown for DeAngelo Hall.

Chiefs fans hold your breath…

With the 5th pick in the 2008 NFL draft the Chiefs select…NO ONE!

We trade our pick because HermCarl is going to violate the Golden Rule of the NFL draft. Anyone know it?

Thou Shalt Not Pass on a Franchise QB!!!

My call is we are going to trade and I don’t think it will be with New England. They (N.E.) need to get younger at LB or DE and trading up doesn’t help them. They can grab Keith Rivers, USC LB, or Derrick Harvey, Florida DE, with their pick.

I think the Chiefs might go ahead and trade down a few spots and the Ravens‘ spot makes sense if we are shooting for Ellis, Albert, Otah or McKelvin. All of those guys can help us and if we can sell our soul for an extra pick we will do it since we’ve lost half the team to waivers or free agency. However…my gut says Herm is hoping to grab Sedrick Ellis at #8 and perhaps effectively piss off every Chiefs fan on Planet Earth since we all know we are weakest on the offensive line, and that B.C. suuuuucks in our currrent sitch.

So the Ravens at #5 get Matt Ryan. The Cheaps save several million bucks (stadium renovations people) and still get who they want. We play in a division with 3 young QB’s… Philip Rivers is 25-7 as a starter. Oakland has FatMarcus and Denver has Cutler. We need a QB that can win us some games, but I’m not confident we should play revolving door at QB again this year with Matt Ryan. We can already do that again with Huard and BC. Slap your forehead now dudes, it might prepare you for the shock when the KC front office will awe you with the continued Chiefs Draft Madness.

Chiefs Take Ellis, J-E-T-S On The Clock

Donovan decided to go with what he thought was the best player available, DT Sedrick Ellis. Some Chiefs fans are applauding the pick and the others are asking why Ryan Clady wasn’t the pick. I am sure we will discuss this throughout the entire first round. I am surprised that Matt Ryan is still on the board and I think the Ravens are getting rather happy.

For now Herm’s old team is on the clock, so that means Jeremy it’s your time to make your selection.
