The deadline for franchise players to reach a long-term agreement with their teams is Monday but if Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is to be believed, the Chiefs and WR Dwayne Bowe are unlikely to reach a deal.

From La Canfora:

Talks with the Chiefs and receiver Dwayne Bowe have gone nowhere, really, according to sources, and there doesn’t appear to be much impetus to securing a longer deal now.

Darn.

If Bowe isn’t inked by the Monday deadline then he has to play the 2012 season under the franchise tender. The two sides would then have to try again next offseason. The Chiefs would have the option to use the franchise tag on Bowe again if they like but that would be a lot of money to pay one guy for two years. Besides, the Chiefs may want to use the tag on other free agents-to-be, like Glenn Dorsey or Branden Albert.

Bowe has gone on the record as saying that he will be in training camp one way or the other so unless he decides to take a page out of the Drew Brees playbook, he’ll be on the field for the Chiefs this season.

Bowe is 27 now and will turn 28 in September. If the Chiefs want to lock him up through his prime, they’re going to have to pony up now or later. Unfortunately, with negotiations so quiet, there is no news on whether the Chiefs are being cheap or if Bowe is asking for more than he’s worth.

What do you think Addicts? Is 2012 Bowe’s last year in KC?
