The NFL’s Supplemental Draft is today. NFL teams will be bidding 2013 draft picks on players that for one reason or another, were not eligible for the 2012 NFL draft in April.

It’s April in July!

Here are the details:

Start time:

1 pm eastern

TV:

Not televised

Where can I get live coverage?

Arrowhead Addict of course. We’ll run a live thread just in case the Chiefs get frisky.

Will any players be selected?

Probably at least one.

How many players are in the draft?

10. They are:

Boise State DB Quaylon Ewing, Syracuse FB Adam Harris, Iowa State OT Adrian Haughton, Carson-Newman LB Larry Lumpkin, Georgia DE Montez Robinson, McMurray WR Houston Tuminello, Baylor WR Josh Gordon and TCU RB Ed Wesley.

Gordon is the big fish here. The former Baylor WR had 21 teams attend his Pro Day this week. He figures to be the target of some WR-needy teams and could go as early as the third round. Look for the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins to be the major players here. Al Davis is dead but you can never count out the Raiders.

Lumpkin and Wesley are other players who might have a shot.

The Chiefs attended Gordon’s Pro Day and reportedly made contact with Lumpkin’s camp. Lumpkin figures to be a 3-4 MLB so if the Chiefs are going to make a move this afternoon, I’d wager it would be on Larry. He stands at 6’0 even and weighs 241 pounds. He drew favorable reviews at his Pro Day and somebody could take him with a late pick.

Fair warning. The Supplemental Draft almost always turns out to be, as Scott Pioli would say, sizzle with very little substance. Don’t be shocked if Gordon is the only player taken and if the Chiefs do nothing.

If you are feeling blue about the NFL preseason still being a few weeks away then I suggest you start looking forward to the NFL’s Supplemental Draft on July 12.

Sure, the Supplemental Draft is usually a mid-July letdown. It rarely turns out to be an exciting affair and then we get back to being bored for another week or so until teams start reporting to training camp. This year, especially now that Al Davis is no longer with us, figures to extra boring.

If you aren’t in the know here, the Supplemental Draft is a second chance draft for players who, for certain circumstances, weren’t able to enter the real draft in April. Teams basically pick in the same order as they did in the real NFL Draft, however they bid a pick on the player they want. So the pool of players will be available for rounds 1-7. Each team gets its turn and decides if they want to pick a player in that round. At the end of the round, the team that picked a player the earliest. So if the Chiefs select a guy in the 11th slot but the Colts select him in the 1st slot, the Colts get him. The picks come from the 2013 draft so if a team is awarded a player they forfeit that pick.

It isn’t official yet but Adam Caplan of The Sideline View is reporting that agents and NFL officials have told him the Supplemental Draft will happen on July 12. There are rumors that up to 10 players could be available, including former Baylore WR Josh Gordon.

Generally the Supplemental Draft is a dull affair. Many times, the players in the draft are there because of some sort of character concerns or suspensions that kept them from being in the regular draft. Other times, transferring schools and other situations could be the reason. Regardless, teams generally don’t like to waste high draft picks here. Though the Oakland Raiders, God bless them, did use a third round pick on former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor.

It is probably unlikely that the Chiefs would select anyone in this year’s draft and even if they did there is a chance we’d never find out about it because another team might get the player first. Still, it’s fun to speculate. Scott Pioli has shown he can surprise us when it comes to player acquisitions so I wouldn’t rule anything out.

The Chicago Bears drafted Unga and the Cowboys take DE Brent Price in today’s NFL Supplemental Draft.

The Bears got Unga with the 12th pick in the 7th round and the Cowboys nabbed Price with the 30th pick in the 7th round. Both will forfeit their 7th round picks in the 2011 NFL Draft.

We know the Chiefs did not place a bid on Unga because they would have picked before the Bears, who won 7 games. KC would have been included in the front part of the lottery with the teams that had 6 wins or less. Pioli must not have thought Unga was worth a draft pick.

I am ok with this. The Chiefs will have more options in the draft next year. No need to give up a pick now for a guy that probably won’t get on the field this season. Plus I am still holding out hope for Jackie Battle.
