Kansas City Chiefs linebackers Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson have been elected to the Pro Bowl.

The teams were announced tonight. Neither Johnson nor Hali were leading in the fan vote. Thankfully, the fan vote accounts for only one third of the process. The NFL coaches and players also get to cast a ballot.

It’s kind of sad that typical NFL fans aren’t aware of how good Johnson and Hali are. The Chiefs had plenty of prime-time games this year so you think more folks would take note.

Ah, well.

The rosters are not set in stone. Since the Pro Bowl is now played before the Super Bowl, players on the teams that make the championship are taken off the rosters. That means we could see one or two Chiefs added to the mix before the Pro Bowl is played.

The Kansas City Chiefs are full of young talent. Until 2010, however, a lot of that young talent was unkown. But after a 10-6 record and an AFC West Championship, the word is out. Matt Cassel, Dwayne Bowe, Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Brian Waters were all represented the Chiefs in last year’s Pro Bowl.

Can the Chiefs send more players to Hawaii again this year? Here is a look at players on the roster who I think have a shot at making the Pro Bowl this season.

Defense:

Eric Berry

He made it as a rookie and he should only get better.

Brandon Flowers

A Pro Bowl berth for Flowers is long overdue. Is this the year?

Brandon Carr

Carr seems to be improving rapidly. He was very good in 2010. Will he be great in 2011?

Paddy's Pot of Gold

I spent the morning writing an article about how the Pro Bowl doesn’t matter and now I am going to spend the afternoon writing an article about how the Kansas City Chiefs players, especially Jamaal Charles, may have gotten some important recognition by playing well in the game that didn’t matter.

While what was done on the field in the Pro Bowl is largely irrelevant, it can be a good opportunity for players to get their name out in the public eye so that they can win more Pro Bowl births and awards in the future. This is especially key for guys who play on a team like the Chiefs who have not had a lot of success in recent years. When a team is losing, especially if that team is not in a large market, they often are left out of the NFL’s nationally televised games. This makes it difficult for good players on bad teams to become household names.

The Chiefs had only one nationally televised game last season and it was in Week 1 on Monday Night Football. The game was more of  a gift from the NFL than an indication of the league’s high expectations for the KC’s 2010 season. The NFL regularly rewards clubs with new stadiums or major renovations a national game to show off their new digs. Be assured that without the New Arrowhead, there would have been no Monday Night Football for the Chiefs.

Earlier we told you that hearing Jamaal Charles wired up at the Pro Bowl was interesting because we don’t usually hear from the Chiefs RB due to his shy nature but the link below of Dwayne Bowe giving a five minute interview is unique for a totally different reason.

We don’t usually hear from Bowe because Bowe isn’t usually allowed to speak.

Todd Haley has taken a lot of criticism since taking over as head coach of the Chiefs (one of our staff writers even thinks the Chiefs should hire Jeff Fisher) but from listening to Bowe, it sounds like Haley has really helped him improve.

Bowe covers some interesting topics including what kind of grip he thinks Haley has on the locker room, the departure of Charlie Weis and the amount of time he and Matt Cassel were forced to put in practicing last season.

It is a really interesting interview and I highly recommend watching it ahead of tonight’s game. Enjoy!

Dwayne Bowe Interview

Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry is in Hawaii for his first Pro Bowl game and he managed to find himself some KC fans along the way. Looks like the lucky fans had a KC football with them that Berry signed for them. If Mr. Berry reads this, he can send me one while he is at it.

Berry tweeted the photo shown above. Pretty cool to see that Chiefs Nation extends all the way to Hawaii.

We don’t usually hear much from Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles due to his shy nature, however if you watch the video linked below, you’ll hear plenty.

Jamaal is down in Hawaii for today’s Pro Bowl game. Be sure to check out his video on NFL.com with guest appearance by Matt Cassel and Dwayne Bowe. Jamaal even gets yelled at by new England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. There is also a moment where it looks like the AFC may be considering putting Charles and Titans RB Chris Johnson in the backfield at the same time! Now that I have to see.

According to a report tweet from Mike Lynch of the Boston Globe, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will miss this year’s Pro Bowl due to a stress fracture in his foot and that he will be replaced by Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel.

I am going to go ahead and say that again. In fact, I’m going to give it it’s own line and I am going to put it in bold and color it red.

Matt Cassel is going to the Pro Bowl.

Cassel finished the season throwing 262 completions in 450 attempts and 3116 yards. His completion percentage dropped at the end of the season to 58.2% and he threw for 27 touchdowns vs. 7 interceptions. Cassel only threw an interception once in every 64.4 attempts.

The fan voting for the Pro Bowl only counts for 1/3 of the total vote as the coaches and players also get a say.

I am not sure how many Chiefs will be voted in but you have to believe guys like Tamab Hali and Jamaal Charles will get serious consideration.
