Multiple sources are reporting that the Minnesota Vikings are going to grant a request by QB Donovan McNabb to be released.

McNabb, the long-time Eagle, has bounced around the league since he was traded out of Philly, spending time in Washington and Minnesota. His play has declined significantly though it is possible he has just been put in two poor situations.

Regardless of his recent track record, it is likely some desperate team will put a claim in on the 36 year-old QB.

My money is on the Texans and Bears, both of whom are in the playoff hunt and are desperate for a starting caliber QB. McNabb is originally from Chicago, so he might want to end up there.

The Chiefs may have had interest a couple of weeks ago but my guess is that they’ll stay out of this one.

This could be McNabb’s last g0-round. Where do you think he’ll end up?

Every week, we go Inside the Numbers with our friends at Pro Football Focus to try to give you a more honest assessment of each player’s play during the previous Kansas City Chiefs game.

PFF grades every player on every play of every game. They assign players a grade for each play, from -2.0 (the worst) to +2.0 (the best). Keep in mind that to get a positive grade, a player has to do something extra or more than he is expected to do. To get a negative grade, a player has to fail at his assigned task. Thus, most players grade at a 0.0 for each play. Only when they do something good or bad, do they get a + or -. This is why PFF is a really great barometer for measuring how good a player is because it measures consistency.

You might remember a player for making one big play and thus conclude that he had a great game. But what about the other 60 or 70 plays? That is where PFF comes in.

How good was Tamba Hali Sunday? Did Tyson Jackson really have a “great game?”

Let’s go Inside the Numbers with Pro Football Foucs…and find out!

The Kansas City Chiefs took the first steps toward turning their season around when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 22-17 yesterday at Arrowhead Stadium. For the first time all season, the Chiefs played as a team and got significant contributions from both sides of the football. It wasn’t always pretty but the Chiefs showed signs of life, particularly during the second half.

We haven’t gotten to give away many Arrowheads this season but today, there is a lot of love to go around. Here’s who earned their Arrowheads on Sunday!

Ryan Succop

I was about to start to get really down on Succop, whom I have never been overly impressed with, after his slow start to the season.

Succop quickly erased those bad feelings and worries on Sunday by having his best game as a pro. Succop nailed all five of his FG attempts, including two from beyond 50-yards.

Succop accounted for 15 of the Chiefs’ 22 points. Without his big game, the Chiefs likely don’t win the game.

Confidence is very important for NFL kickers and going into yesterday’s game, Succop was at a bit of a crossroad. Had he continued to struggle, the Chiefs may have started looking around for other options at kicker. Instead, Succop rewarded the team and renewed their faith in him by having a monster day. Big, big Arrowhead going to Succop!

Matt Cassel’s stellar second half performance will likely steal most of the headlines, but it was a gritty performance by struggling kicker Ryan Succop that put the Chiefs in a position to win the game.

Succop had struggled early this season causing many, including this writer, to question whether or not it was time to replace him. Had Succop continued to struggle, he very well could have lost his job.

But Ryan Succop is evidently made of some strong stuff.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have just saved their season.

Todd Haley’s team showed they haven’t given up and ground out a win against the now 0-4 Minnesota Vikings 22-17.

The story of the game has to be Matt Cassel. After struggling early, like he had all year, Cassel put the team on his back and led them to a victory with sharp play in the second half.

Most had given up on Cassel and early Sunday it looked like more of the same. Yet near the end of the first quarter, Cassel got into a verbal spat with head coach Todd Haley. After that, Cassel began playing inspired football and helped give the Chiefs offense the spark it had been missing since losing pro bowl RB Jamaal Charles.

Cassel finished the day 18 of 29 for 260 yards and a touchdown. 161 yards of Cassel’s total came in the second half.

The now 1-3 Chiefs look to start a winning streak as they head out on the road to take on the struggling Colts next week.

Soak it in, Chiefs fans. The Chiefs have their first win of the year!

We’ll have our Inside the Enemy Camp post later today but I wanted to link you all on over to my answers to the questions that came over from The Viking Age, FanSided’s Minnesota Vikings site.

Here is a preview:

Clint: Are you guys participating in the “Suck for Luck” movement?

Patrick: AA has a very large staff. Some of the guys are on the Suck for Luck bandwagon. Others, like me, just can’t bring themselves to do it. Going 1-1 or 2-14 can cause a lot of other problems for an organization that I am not sure the Chiefs want. Still, I recognize that this team needs a franchise QB. I will always cheer for the Chiefs to win on Sunday but if they somehow ended up with Andrew Luck, I wouldn’t complain either. Things will play out as they will play out.

From thevikingage.com (share this quote)

For a while now, I have wondered if the folks over at One Arrowhead Drive ever stop by to read what we have to say. After watching last week’s game, I now have no doubt.

Of my five keys to victory last week, the Chiefs did four of them really well and one of them just a little bit. Not surprisingly, they almost won the game.

Here is my first key to victory from last week.

Return to fundamentals (stop missing tackles, stop turning the ball over), Play it safe in the secondary, generate pressure up front, get Steve Breaston involved, bust out some trick plays.

The Chiefs did the first four pretty dang well. The last one they largely ignored, though they did do a fake reverse on a return that set them up with some pretty good field position.

So Todd, since I know you are reading this, well done on taking my advice. I’ve got five more keys to victory for you.

After the jump.

Some quick background before we get to Chris Kluwe’s hilarious tweet.

Apparently, four of the 10 named plaintiffs in the players’ anti-trust case are trying to swing their own deals ahead of the new CBA. Basically, to sort this mess out, the NFL will need the players to drop their lawsuit. According to multiple reports today, four of the plaintiffs named in the case, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson are asking for side deals of their own before they will settle. The word is that Mankins and Jackson are looking for money they feel they lost out on last year and Brees and Manning are looking for a special exemption from ever receiving the franchise tag again.

As can be imagined, these demands could end up holding up talks (and the paychecks of over 1000 players) so four guys can get theirs.

As you can imagine, this is not popular news to the other NFL players. One “player,” Moments ago, Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, let it be known just how strongly he feels about the news on Twitter.

Here it is:

If you haven’t heard yet, teams other than the Kansas City Chiefs are picking in the 2011 NFL Draft. In fact, those teams play a very important role in the Chiefs’ draft since the Chiefs don’t pick in the top 5 this year. Who the 20 teams before us pick can have a significant impact on who we draft. So, for those wondering why I don’t think AJ Green or Julio Jones will be there for us at 21, take a look at one way I see the first round of the Draft going.

The Minnesota Vikings have released embattled receiver Randy Moss after trading for him only four weeks ago.

Moss made some comments following the team’s loss to the New England Patriots that obviously rubbed the Vikings management the wrong way.

Moss will now have to pass through waivers before he can become a free agent. This far into the season, the teams with the worst record get priority. That means the 0-7 Buffalo Bills are at the front of the line. If the Bills pass, Moss would fall to the next team, which I believe would be the Cowboys and so on until he is either claimed or becomes a free agent.

The Chiefs, with a 5-2 record, are at the back of the line but they aren’t likely to put a claim on Moss anyway. The Chiefs are looking for a certain type of player and Moss doesn’t fit their mold.

We do, however, have to point out that GM Scott Pioli was with the Patriots when they traded for Moss.

Interestingly, there is a chance Moss could be claimed by the Patriots, the team that traded him four weeks ago for a third round draft pick.

Multiple sources are reporting that the owners have voted to change the NFL playoff overtime rules. The vote count was 28 for and 4 against to change from the sudden death format to a modified format that increases the chance that both teams will get to process the football. The “no votes” came from Bills, Ravens, Vikings and Bengals.

Under the new format, the team that wins the coin toss will have to score a touchdown on its opening procession to win outright. If they only score a field goal, the opposing team will be given procession and can either tie the game with a FG, in which case the game would revert back to sudden death rules, or score a touchdown for the win. Got all that?

The new rule is currently only for playoff games. As things stand now, regular season games will still be played under the old sudden death format. However, Adam Schefter is reporting that in May, “the owners will discuss whether to amend the modified OT proposal to also include the regular season for 2010.”

What do you think, Addicts? Is this a positive change? I for one think it should extend to the regular season as well. Those games are just as important as they determine who gets in to the playoffs. I think to change it just for the playoffs kind of defeats the purpose of making OT more fair.

The Minnesota Vikings are still trying to sell the remainder of their playoff tickets for this weekend’s game and they have resorted to begging. They have not hosted a game since 2000 and are still finding it hard to fill up the seats. So they have brought in Jared Allen to beg Vikings fans to spend their Christmas money to come watch the Vikes. I find it somewhat amusing that a multi-millionaire is asking people to spend their Christmas money.

Jason Whitlock once dubbed Jared Allen the Space Cowboy, a name that never really stuck. My nickname for him, the One Man Gang, at least seemed to stick around here, and it sure seems valid right about now. After all, it looks like Jared put his once-in-a-lifetime contract above the entire Chiefs family–Kansas City, his teammates, the front office and, most of all, the fans. I can’t say that I blame him, except that I kind of feel like Jared’s relationship with Kansas City and the fans was a facade. That’s why I’m thinking Space Cowboy might actually be a better moniker for him right about now…

Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
Cause I speak of the pompitus of love.
People talk about me, baby
Say I’m doin’ you wrong, doin’ you wrong
Well, don’t you worry baby
Don’t worry cause I’m right here, right here, right here,
right here at home

Cause I’m a picker
I’m a grinner
I’m a lover
And I’m a sinner
I play my music in the sun.
I’m a joker
I’m a smoker
I’m a midnight toker
I get my loving on the run… wooo woooo… – Steve Miller’s “The Joker”

Whether it was because he was the Space Cowboy off the field, or the Gangster of Love on it, Chiefs fans cherished Jared Allen. When he got his DUIs, a lot of people did worry and, myself included, said that he had done us wrong and didn’t deserve his big raise. Such raises were instead reserved for star players like Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez, players who had performed well on the field and off of it. But somehow he soothed our worries, got his suspension cut in half and convinced us that he was a Chief-for-life reborn, despite earlier comments to the contrary.

And that was just for those of us who were skeptical. Most fans already had taken the bait–hook line and sinker. But eventually we all did.

Breaking news from NFL.com–the Chiefs have sent Jared Allen to the Vikings. I’m actually quite happy with the two third rounders we got in addition to the No. 17 pick. By my calculations we now have six picks in the top 100, three in the top 40 and more trade value chart points than any other team out there. The draft now rolls through Kansas City. This is just crazy…

The Kansas Chiefs have agreed to trade Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen to the Minnseota Vikings, reports NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.

The Chiefs will receive Minnesota’s first- (17th overall) and both of its third-round picks (73rd and 82nd) as compensation. Kansas City has been looking to acquire additional draft picks in an attempt to speed up coach Herm Edwards’ rebuilding project for a team that lost its last nine games in 2007 and finished 4-12.

The Vikings also agreed on a new contract with Allen, which will be finalized Wednesday. Allen flew to Minnesota on Tuesday night in anticipation of Wednesday’s events.

From Pro Football Talk:

The Chiefs will now add the No. 17, No. 73, and No. 82 overall selections to the No. 5, No. 35, and No. 66 picks, giving them six selections among the first 100 picks…

More PFT:

In addition to the three 2008 draft picks that the Minnesota Vikings gave up in order to acquire the rights to defensive end Jared Allen, the Vikes have made defensive end Jared Allen the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Per Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Allen will get a six-year, $74 million deal, with $31 million in guaranteed money.

Actually, the guarantee is $31,000,069. That’s right . . . “Wine ‘em, dine ‘em, 69 ‘em.”

We’ll be breaking this down all week, folks. For now, it’s still a bit of a shocker. I wasn’t expecting this until later in the week, personally. Stay tuned!

Update 12:35 AM CST: The Daily Norseman is reporting that Jared Allen has left Minnesota without a contract, due to an NFL rule that limits free agent visits to 48 hours. Negotiations will continue long distance, but Jared will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers early next week.

Likely soon-to-be ex-Chiefs star Jared Allen is still in Minnesota negotiating with the Vikings. Tonight from the Star Tribune:

Jared Allen continued his visit with the Vikings on Saturday afternoon at Winter Park as the team worked both to reach an agreement on a multiyear contract with the Pro Bowl defensive end as well as a trade that would send draft picks to the Kansas City Chiefs…

The Vikings have offered Kansas City their first-round pick (No. 17 overall) in next weekend’s NFL draft as well as one of their two third-round selections. Those picks fall at No. 73 and No. 82 overall, with the first one having been acquired in a trade last year with the Denver Broncos.

Carl Peterson, who serves as Chiefs president, chief executive officer and general manager, is known in league circles as an extremely tough negotiator and could be looking for a better compensation package.

The rebuilding Chiefs, coming off a 4-12 season, would have five of the first 73 picks in the draft if they obtained the Vikings’ top pick as well as their first selection in round three. The Buccaneers reportedly are willing to part with their first-round pick, but that might not be as attractive to the Chiefs because it comes three picks after the Vikings’ selection.

We’ll keep you posted!
