Jason La Canfora of NFL.com is reporting that Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy could be a potential target to land the likely soon to be open offensive coordinator position in Kansas City.

From NFL.com:

The Kansas City Chiefs could pinpoint Denver Broncos Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy as a possible coordinator/coach-in-waiting should they be unable to land Josh McDaniels from St. Louis, sources said. (According to league sources, the Rams would like to retain McDaniels as offensive coordinator to stay with Bradford.) McDaniels would be a candidate in Kansas City if Romeo Crennel is promoted as many expect, and New England coach Bill Belichick also would welcome him back if Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien departs for Penn State or the Kansas City opening himself.

I can buy this. McDaniels might be tough to get. Even if the Rams let him go, the Pats might swipe him away. Then again, if he thinks Scott Pioli plans to make him a head coach once Romeo Crennel retires, if Crennel is named head coach, then KC might be an attractive sport for McDaniels to land.

All of this is interesting but nothing can happen until the Chiefs decide for sure that Crennel is going to be their permanent head coach. I wouldn’t be shocked if we found something out by the end of this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been rumored to be targeting Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy to replace Charlie Weis, however according to a tweet by ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter, it looks like McCoy could be staying in Denver.

Not sure if this beats John Elway on Twitter, but the Broncos retained their OC Mike McCoy, who also could have gone to Clev or KC.

The Chiefs are likely grumpy over this situation. McCoy was originally hired by former Denver head coach Josh McDaniels. McCoy is familiar with the terminology and system the Chiefs run and likely would have been a nice fit for QB Matt Cassel considering the New England-McDaniels-Cassel connection.

Unfortunately the Broncos hired John Fox to be there new head coach and McCoy worked under Fox previously in Carolina. The Chiefs probably figured most of McDaniels’ old staff would be cut lose but the Fox hire was a game changer int his situation.

It looks as though the Chiefs will have to look elsewhere to find their new offensive coordinator.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking for an offensive coordinator in the coming weeks but their top candidate could get scooped up by one of their division rivals.

Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star has been saying for a while that Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is the top target for the Chiefs to fill the void left by Charlie Weis.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, there is a chance the Broncos could retain McCoy, especially considering today’s announcement that John Fox will be the Broncos next head coach.

McCoy worked for Fox in Carolina so there is a familiarity there. If Fox decides he wants to work with his old mate then McCoy could end up staying in Denver.

Chris Mortenson of ESPN.com is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs are strongly considering Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy to replace Charlie Weis.

McCoy joined the Broncos in 2009 after spending a number of seasons with the Carolina Panthers in a number of different positions. McCoy is familiar with the type of system the Chiefs run and the terminology he he used under McDaniels would be similar to the Haley/Weis playbook.

McCoy was first mentioned a possible replacement for Weis last week by Kansas City star reporter Kent Babb.
