Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, it’s finally here. The NFL season is upon us and we can now officially say it’s “game week”. The preseason is officially in the rearview and the 53 man roster has been set (at least for now). It’s time to stop talking hypotheticals and actually look at this week’s match up. For the Kansas City Chiefs that first match up comes against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Falcons, as we currently know them with Thomas Dimitroff as GM, Mike Smith as the head coach, and Matt Ryan as the starting quarter back, have been together since the 2008 season when all three first came to Atlanta. In those four seasons the Falcons have been one of the better teams in the NFL. During that span they have gone 43-21 (67.2%) with three playoff births and have finished with a winning record in all four seasons. The Falcons have been especially good at home where they are 26-6 (81.3%). On the road they have still been a good team going 17-15 (53.1%). Despite having a winning record on the road, I think most Chiefs fans like their odds at home a lot more than they would if the Chiefs had to travel to Atlanta to face “Matty Ice” and the Falcons.

A great deal has been made about stopping the Falcons offense without the suspended Tamba Hali and the pressure he imposes on the quarterback. Another major concern for KC fans is the health of the KC secondary where Brandon Flowers may or may not play and Kendrick Lewis has already been ruled out. So I thought I’d take a look at the Falcons over the past four years and see if I could find a recipe for beating them. I started by looking at how getting to Matt Ryan effects the Falcons.

I specifically looked at the difference in winning percentage between games where Ryan was sacked 2 or less times versus games where he was sacked 3 or more times. I also broke down the winning percentages for those same categories when the Falcons were on the road. Here is what I found:

In games where Atlanta allows 2 or less sacks they are 35-15 (70.0%).

In road games where Atlanta allows 2 or less sacks they are 13-9 (59.1%).

In games where Atlanta allows 3 or more sacks they are 8-6 (57.1%).

In road games where Atlanta allows 3 or more sacks they are 4-6 (40.0%).

A drop in road winning percentage from 59.1% to 40.0% when on the road is note worthy. So getting constant pressure on Ryan does help tip the scales to the home team’s favor. In this regard, losing Tamba Hali for this game will hurt the Chiefs. However, as you will see in a minute, this difference in winning percentage is actually the least significant of the four areas I looked at. I think you’ll find the other three slightly more encouraging.

Next I looked at how Matt Ryan’s passing totals effect the Falcons’ winning percentage. There is a valid concern that Ryan may rack up big stats against a banged up KC secondary, so I broke it down to games where Ryan threw for under 250 yards versus games where he threw for 250 yards or more. Here is what I found:

In games where Ryan threw for under 250 yards the Falcons are 29-7 (80.5%).

In road games where Ryan threw for under 250 yards the Falcons are 12-5 (70.6%).

In games where Ryan threw for 250 yards or more the Falcons are 13-12 (52.0%).

In road games where Ryan threw for 250 yards or more the Falcons are 5-10 (33.3%).

These numbers caught me by surprise. The Falcons’ road winning percentage is over 30 points higher when Matt Ryan passes for fewer yards. I went in expecting the winning percentage to be skewered a little by the fact that QBs often rack up big totals in losses because they are passing a lot to try and come from behind. What I wasn’t expecting was to find that the Falcons have only won five road games in four years where Ryan has thrown for 250 yards or more. To be fair to Ryan, three of those five wins came last season. So it appears as he develops as a QB he is more likely to carry his team. However, the stats still say that the Falcons’ game plan for winning on the road doesn’t usually include Ryan winging the ball all over the field. That’s good news for the Chiefs and their banged up secondary. The logical conclusion then is that the Falcons rely more on their run game when trying to win games on the road. That’s where we’ll take a look next.

I specifically looked at the difference in winning percentage in games where the Falcons rushed the ball for 100 yards or more versus games where they rushed for under 100 yards. Here is what I found:

In games where Atlanta rushed for 100 yards or more they are 29-8 (78.4%).

In road games where Atlanta rushed for 100 yards or more they are 12-6 (66.7%).

In games where Atlanta rushed for under 100 yards they are 14-13 (51.9%).

In road games where Atlanta rushed for under 100 yards they are 5-9 (35.7%).

So basically, when the Falcons rush for 100 yards or more on the road, their odds of winning almost double. They win two out of three games when they rush for 100 yards but they lose about two out of three when they don’t (on the road). That’s a pretty significant stat. I’d say that of the three stats we’ve looked at so far it’s the most significant. I feel confident saying that KC’s ability to stop the Atlanta run game will have a major impact on the game. One plus for KC in this area is that their two starting 3-4 DEs (Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson) were the top rated at their position at stopping the run last year. That’s good news for KC fans. If Derrick Johnson isn’t able to play then that will be a blow to the KC run defense and the other players will have to step up to fill his void if they hope to win this important battle.

Finally, I thought I should look at the opposite side of the ball. So I decided to simply look at points allowed by the Atlanta defense. I looked at Atlanta’s winning percentage when they allow 24 points or less versus when they allow 25 points or more. Here is what I found:

In games where Atlanta allowed 24 points or less they are 38-7 (84.4%).

In road games where Atlanta allowed 24 points or less they are 16-5 (76.2%).

In games where Atlanta allowed 25 points or more they are 5-14 (26.3%).

In road games where Atlanta allowed 25 point or more they are 1-10 (9.1%).

Wow. Just….wow. In four years the Falcons have only won ONE road game where they allowed over 24 points. We’re not talking about the KC offense having to score 45 points, just 25. Not only do the Falcons practically NEVER win when they allow over 24 points on the road, they are VERY GOOD on the road when they allow 24 points or less. A 76.2 winning percentage on the road is more than impressive. We have now found the most significant factor in the KC/Atlanta game. The KC offense must score points if they want to win. The numbers say that if KC can score over 24 points that their odds of winning jump from 24% up to 91%. That’s about as cut and dry as it gets.

The good news for KC fans is that the starting offense has looked about as good as it ever has during the preseason since Matt Cassel arrived in KC. The run game looks strong and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll seems to have a good system and relationship going with Cassel that will allow him to play to his strengths.

So in conclusion, the loss of Tamba Hali and the injuries to KC’s secondary are important and will have an effect on the game. However, it doesn’t mean that KC can’t execute a game plan that is proven to beat the Falcons. If the Chiefs can stop the run on defense and score points on offense then history says they have an excellent shot at beating the Falcons. That should give hope to all KC fans.

As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also said that if Todd Haley did not get his locker room unified, that the loss to Buffalo could easily snowball into a bad season and very well cost Todd Haley his job. I was roundly ridiculed for making such an outrageous claim.

Alas, it appears that The Fickle Finger of Fate has determined that I was possibly prophetic, nay even Nostradamus-like, with that forecast as we are now less than a week into the frenzied fervency of the Bench Cassel, Can Haley, Blame Pioli, Hunt’s A Tightwad, and Suck for Luck campaigns.

Now, to the surprise (chagrin?) of many I am sure, I present:

THE RECLAMATION OF TODD HALEY

I mean come on, after all the trouble I caused the poor guy last week, it’s the least I can do. Right?

Enough sizzle, substance to follow.

My old man’s a cardiologist. My mom is a therapist. I’ve been covering the Chiefs for two-and-a-half years.
Post-Blackledge Stress Disorder – A condition that has tormented Chiefs fans ever since the Chiefs selected quarterback Todd Blackledge out of Penn State seventh overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. Blackledge became a monumental bust, and most Chiefs fans never recovered. The condition is typically defined as chronic paranoia when it comes to drafting a first-round quarterback, a voyage which almost every NFL team must eventually take.

The severity of this condition has worsened over the years. After former Chiefs GM Carl Peterson (1989-2009) refused to select a first-round quarterback during his 20-year tenure, Chiefs Nation has become much more resistant to the idea of their beloved team doing just that. Medical experts compare it to when a person becomes so obese they’d rather just accept their current state, instead of having the courage to step on a scale, accept the problem and take the proper measures to correct it. One of the surefire signs of PBSD is denial.

In recent years, PBSD has become so severe within the Chiefs Nation community that many fans openly stated that they preferred Brodie “Brokie” Croyle to Chad Pennington, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, and more recently Tyler Thigpen to Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel and Matt Leinart.

Another recent turn in this chronic state of mental illness is delusional thinking. For instance, many fans currently think that new Chiefs GM Scott Pioli finding another Tom Brady or Matt Cassel in the final rounds of the draft is a mortal lock.

PBSD is a very serious condition. There is no current known cure for this ailment, although experts hope the Chiefs actually drafting or trading for a legitimate young franchise quarterback will eliminate all symptoms.

The Chiefs have been blowing kisses to every player in the Top 10. It appears they don’t know what’s going to happen themselves…and in my opinion-they don’t.One possibility that hasn’t been discussed is a potential trade with the Ravens, a team that is absolutely desperate for a QB.

Steve McNair is as fragile as a graham cracker, Kyle Boller hasn’t done much but show a few flashes of luckiness before regressing and Troy Smith appears to be another Heisman casualty; light years away from being a starter. Along with the Falcons, and our Chiefs, the Ravens are in the “Needa Quarterback Club”.

The Ravens have the 8th pick, the 38th pick, and in the third round #99, then #106 right after us at #105.

(They would have had #71 too, but due to the McGahee trade a few years ago and later Marcus Stroud-they sent it Jacksonville’s way.) I highly doubt they would part with #38, but they might want to wheel and deal with the rest because they are at a total wild-card spot now. Here’s my projection in this scenario.

Somehow, the ‘Fins will get Jake Long. I challenge you to name a quality starter on their line off the top of your head. (Don’t cheat and Google-Blast me in the comments either…you know you couldn’t do it.)

At #2, the Rams need a DE in a bad way. Leonard Little alone can’t cut it and he’s getting old too. DE Chris Long seems to be a good fit. Between their two starting DE’s last year they had all of 3.5 sacks. Jared Allen could get that in one game. That being said, they could also go-go gadget Gholston which would just swap with the Jets at #6.Next up, the Falcons. They will take Glenn Dorsey at #3. Here’s why:

Falcons G.M., Thomas Dimitroff comes from New England. He essentially crafted that team by using his #1 picks on Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, and Ty Warren. Not only that, but they have not one, not two, but THREE second-round picks. (#34, #38 and #48) They also need a QB and they will likely get Brohm, Flacco or Henne with one of those.

#4 The Faiders- who don’t deserve bold; they take Run DMC because they are stupid enough to tie up $100 million in two guys who haven’t played 1 full game. One of those three precious second-round picks (#34) Atlanta owns came from Oaktown for DeAngelo Hall.

Chiefs fans hold your breath…

With the 5th pick in the 2008 NFL draft the Chiefs select…NO ONE!

We trade our pick because HermCarl is going to violate the Golden Rule of the NFL draft. Anyone know it?

Thou Shalt Not Pass on a Franchise QB!!!

My call is we are going to trade and I don’t think it will be with New England. They (N.E.) need to get younger at LB or DE and trading up doesn’t help them. They can grab Keith Rivers, USC LB, or Derrick Harvey, Florida DE, with their pick.

I think the Chiefs might go ahead and trade down a few spots and the Ravens‘ spot makes sense if we are shooting for Ellis, Albert, Otah or McKelvin. All of those guys can help us and if we can sell our soul for an extra pick we will do it since we’ve lost half the team to waivers or free agency. However…my gut says Herm is hoping to grab Sedrick Ellis at #8 and perhaps effectively piss off every Chiefs fan on Planet Earth since we all know we are weakest on the offensive line, and that B.C. suuuuucks in our currrent sitch.

So the Ravens at #5 get Matt Ryan. The Cheaps save several million bucks (stadium renovations people) and still get who they want. We play in a division with 3 young QB’s… Philip Rivers is 25-7 as a starter. Oakland has FatMarcus and Denver has Cutler. We need a QB that can win us some games, but I’m not confident we should play revolving door at QB again this year with Matt Ryan. We can already do that again with Huard and BC. Slap your forehead now dudes, it might prepare you for the shock when the KC front office will awe you with the continued Chiefs Draft Madness.

Brian(kirksville, MO): If the Falcons dont take Matt Ryan where does he fall? Does Kansas City pick him, the Ravens at 8 get him or does another team trade up?

Mel Kiper: If he gets past Atlanta, and I think they’d look at Dorsey if they don’t take him, then I think KC would have to take him. Is anyone sold on Croyle? I would take Ryan. If KC didn’t take him then it comes down to Baltimore. I think it would take 2 seconds for them to get the card up to the commissioner. They desperately need a QB. They have a new coach, a new coordinator. You have a whole new era beginning.

This just in: Matt Ryan scored a 32 on his Wonderlic. By comparison, Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick scored a 38, Brodie Croyle a 24 and Vince Young a contested 16 (10 is literacy). Brian Brohm and Joe Flacco, as well as several top offensive tackles, also shined during the test, which is good news for Chiefs fans. From the Chicago Tribune:

A person of average intelligence is supposed to score a 20. NFL teams like to see quarterbacks, offensive linemen, middle linebackers and safeties score higher than that because those positions can be mentally demanding.

At quarterback , none of the top prospects laid a Wonderlic egg. Boston College’s Matt Ryan, he of the off-the-charts intangibles, scored an impressive 32. And his score was matched by Louisville’s Brian Brohm, the second-highest-rated quarterback after Ryan on most boards.

Joe Flacco of Delaware scored a 27 and Chad Henne of Michigan scored a 22. Both are considered second-round prospects.

Most of the top offensive linemen also tested well. Michigan’s Jake Long scored a 26. Pittsburgh’s Jeff Otah scored a 28. Southern California’s Sam Baker scored a 27. Vanderbilt’s Chris Williams scored a 32. Boston College’s Godser Cherilus scored a 25.

My “The Blueprint 2″ strategy demands that the Chiefs take a quarterback and a tackle in the first two rounds of the upcoming draft. It appears that if the Chiefs subscribe to this theory they should be in great shape. Don’t underestimate the Wonderlic either; last year’s Super Bowl QBs, Eli Manning and Tom Brady, scored a 39 and a 33 on the test, respectively.

(So here it finally is, after getting delayed by the kickoff of Arrowhead Addict Radio. Yeah, OK, also by the NCAA Tourney. Love me some March Madness.)

As many of you heard during the debut of The Best Bros. Show, Zach and I have an ongoing debate over who the Chiefs should take with the number five pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. After much thought and deliberation, Zach says Jake Long if he’s there, I say Matt Ryan no matter who’s there. I say pass on Jake Long if Ryan or Sedrick Ellis are there, he thinks we pass on Ryan no matter what. Arrowhead Addict is at an impasse when it comes to which player we should select with the fifth pick in a mere five weeks.

Zach isn’t sold on Ryan as a franchise quarterback, while I feel he’s the best quarterback to come along since Eli Manning. Zach says you worry about protection along the offensive line first, and who’s throwing behind them second. I say why even worry about protection if your QB isn’t worth a damn. It’s his opinion that franchise left tackles are the player to build a franchise around. My opinion is that all rebuilding efforts must start with a quarterback. We could be given a gift that allows us to do this next month, but if we pass on Ryan it could end up being a curse.

Judging by the strong reaction to Long among Chiefs fans that I’ve witnessed, I’d say that most of you are with Zach on this one. That’s why I had to drop “The Blueprint 2″ on you.

Since the offseason began, and also since my last Blueprint, some things have come to light that have caused me to change my mind about this upcoming draft:

Trade down. It’s a common opinion among Chiefs fans when it comes to what the Chiefs should do in the first round of this April’s NFL Draft. Well, guess what — trading down is easier said than done.

Unless either Darren McFadden or Matt Ryan is sitting there, there is really no chance of the Chiefs trading down. Even then, the team trading up would have to really, really want one of those two players. Why?

We’ve seen first hand what striking out on a top ten pick can do. Remember Ryan Sims? It’s not only demoralizing to the fans and a waste of what needs to be a Pro Bowl-caliber player, it kills the salary cap. Then consider that trading up to that spot would likely cost a team its own first and a plethora of other important picks. In a year where the back of the first round is nearly as good as the front, don’t expect many teams to be willing to take on that gamble.

I know this won’t be a popular post, but I’m just trying to help my fellow Chiefs fans be a bit more realistic about this upcoming draft. Plus, Jake Long and McFadden will almost certainly be gone, and if Ryan makes it to five we might even take him. Basically, unless Run DMC miraculously slips to five and Jerry Jones calls, don’t expect us to trade down. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it will be easier for us to face it now than in April.
