What a crazy couple of weeks.

If you’re like me, you’re still struggling to put together everything that happened. Granted, the Chiefs were fairly quiet, but I can’t disagree with a single move they made. Still, obviously, the question of how they are going to do this year depends on much more than how they themselves improved. This year’s schedule will be much harder and all of our upcoming opponents have been busy.

Thus, to see how our upcoming adversaries stack up, I bring you my second Opponent Power Ranking of the year.

Disclaimer: I did my best to put in the latest and most complete FA info on each team, but I only counted FA’s that have been definitively signed or resigned. By the time you read this, there could be a whole swath of new developments.

See what we got coming after the jump: (more…)

Lions beat writer Dave Birkett is reporting that the Lions will pick quarterback Matt Stafford with the No. 1 overall pick. From Birk’s Eye View:

The Lions are close to agreeing on a deal with Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford to be the No. 1 overall pick.

Lions president Tom Lewand met with owner William Clay Ford for final approval earlier today, and the two sides could finalize a contract as soon as today. One source said a “catastrophe” would have to happen for the Lions not to draft Stafford at this point.

Can’t say this thrills me, but it does make the No. 3 pick a more valuable trade commodity. Hopefully, someone will trade up with us to leapfrog the Seahawks and draft Mark Sanchez. Otherwise, I think we could pick Aaron Curry. But here’s another name I’ll throw out there — Tyson Jackson.

Everyone loves to yap about how Scott Pioli selected a Curryesque linebacker 10th overall just a year ago. But what about when he picked 3-4 defensive end Richard Seymour sixth overall? Some people thought that was a reach, well, at least before all the Pro Bowl trips they did. Maybe Jackson — the best 3-4 DE in this draft, probably hands down — is not a reach at No. 3. Especially if he is willing to give us a discount in order to become the third pick.

Addicts, what does Stafford to the Lions mean for the Chiefs?

Alright, we’re going to switch it up on these first three to encourage involvement and discussion. What I want everybody to do for the first three picks (Lions, Rams, Chiefs) is to comment on who they would select with the pick and why. Be convincing — you could sway some votes. We’ll let these three run for a day each to round out the week, and then we’ll start with the polls once we move past the Chiefs this weekend. Hell, I might let us hash out the Chiefs all weekend. I will hand tally the results for the first three picks. The polls will list the 10 top options according to a composite mock I’ll put together, using the mocks of top experts and sites. Got it? Let’s get started…

Adam is calling for Larry Johnson to be traded? His beloved Iron Man? No, I have not been abducted and bodysnatched by aliens. I’m honestly starting to think about it.

Why? Because it’s clear that neither the Chiefs nor most Chiefs fans like L.J., let alone love him like we do here at the Addict. The Chiefs also have no clue how to use him, and are now taking away his goalline carries. Yes, the top goalline back over a recent two-season period has been replaced.

Herm Edwards is a dumb sonofabitch. There. I said it and feel better.

In a 48-hour period the Preacher has stated that he will not sit Damion McIntsoh for Herb Taylor, proclaimed Tyler Thigpen his starting quarterback and given L.J.’s goalline carries to Kimble Anders Part Deaux and a poor man’s Reggie Bush. Then again, this is the guy who thought he could turn Marques Hagans into the pro version of Eric Crouch circa Nebraska only hours after giving him a playboook. Can’t you just see Borat pointing at him and saying, “is retard?”

Hey, look, I like Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith, and I think they could be a solid platoon. But we are talking about THE Larry Johnson, the running back who started his career off in Adrian Peterson-like fashion. If we’re not going to use him and use him properly–meaning 20-plus carries per game and goalline carries–then we might as well move him. But for whom?

Roy Williams, the disgruntled Detroit Lions receiver and free agent to be.

Williams was the other star NFL player who complained following last weekend’s action, and with Calvin Johnson, Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald they don’t need him. They do, however, need a running back. They recently signed Rudi “Poo” Johnson and worked out Cedric “The Non-Entertainer” Benson and Shauna Alexander. That right there shows they are not comfortable at all with Kevin Smith as their feature back. Smith is no Iron Man.

The Lions haven’t been able to run the ball since losing Barry Sanders. You’d have to think that they’d pull the trigger on this trade, especially with Roy Williams’ complaining and impending free agency. And if there’s ever been a sucker GM, it’s Matt Millen.

I say let’s do Larry and the fans (who obviously loathe him) a favor and move him for Roy Williams. Roy is only 26, and with his 4.37 speed he’d give us the homerun hitter we desperately need. At 6’3″ he’d also provide us with another big target, and Optimus Prime does play big. As you all know, there is a difference between being being and playing big.

(Plus, since I’m a ginormous freakin’ Kingpin fan, I’d love saying, “my little Roy toy” over and over again.)

I say why not for both teams. I see this being a deal like the Champ-Portis one from earlier this decade, which I think has been a win-win for both teams involved.

What are your thoughts on my hypothetical L.J.-Roy trade?

Craphonso Thorpe was signed by the Jaguars to compete for a roster spot. He’ll most likely have to make his mark returning punts or kicks, because it looks like the Jaguars aren’t gonna let MJD carry that load any longer.
