A couple of weeks ago the New England Patriots unexpectedly cut CB Leigh Bodden. As is custom, one of the natural places ex-Patriots end up working out is Kansas City. Indeed Bodden did work out for the Chiefs, however the team did not sign him.

We are now hearing, via Bodden himself, that he had to tell the Chiefs he was injured.

Here is the interesting bit from the Boston Herald:

Beginning in Week 1, Bodden dealt with back pain, leg pain and weakness, knee pain, and groin pain, and no one could figure out why. That explains his performance that dipped. He actually was about to sign with the Chiefs, who didn’t even need to work him out before Bodden decided to tell Kansas City exactly why he felt like he did. He was injured and in pain.

From www.bostonherald.com (share this quote)

It turned out Bodden had a herniated disk and required surgery.

It is a shame because Bodden really could have helped the Chiefs, especially last week with both Javier Arenas and Jon McGraw injured.

Then again, had Bodden not been injured, his play might not have slipped and New England probably would cut him.

Perhaps the Chiefs will take a look in the offseason.

Earlier this week we told you that New England Patriots CB Leigh Bodden was unexpectedly released by the New England Patriots. Bodden had to pass through waivers, however no team attempted to claim him and thus he became a free agent.

Now we are hearing from Charlie Casserly of CBS Sports that Bodden visited with the Chiefs this week.

Whether they sign him or not, I am glad to hear that the Chiefs at least took a look. KC has two very talented corners in Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr, but after that there are a lot of question marks. I’m not really sure what the Chiefs have in Javier Arenas, and Jalil Brown likely won’t contribute any time soon. Bodden could be a nice veteran pick-up that would likely come at a low price.

Earlier we told you that former New England Patriots CB Leigh Bodden could potentially be claimed off waivers today and that the Kansas City Chiefs were one of the teams rumored to have possible interest.

Well the deadline for teams to submit a claim has come and gone and according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, no NFL team took the bait.

That means Bodden is now an unrestricted free agent and that he is free to sign with any team that wants him.

That means the Patriots are on the hook for the rest of Bodden’s contact which could be good news for whomever decides to sign him. The CB will likely be apt to sign a more team-friendly deal since he will be collecting from New England.

We all know Scott Pioli loves a bargain so we’ll keep an eye on where Bodden signs. He might not be a bad one-year rental for a team looking to boost their CB play.

On Friday the New England Patriots unexpectedly released veteran CB Leigh Bodden. Since the trade deadline is passed, Bodden must pass through waivers before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Teams have until 4 p.m. Eastern today to put in a claim.

According to SI.com’s Peter King in his weekly Monday Morning QB column, the 49ers, Bengals, Bucs, Chiefs, Bills, and Jets could make a claim on Bodden. If more than one team puts a claim in on the CB, the team with the worst record would be awarded his services. Of the teams King mentioned, the Chiefs currently have the worst record at 3-3.

That isn’t to say a team with a worse record that King didn’t mention might not put in a claim.

So does Bodden make sense for the Chiefs? In my opinion, yes.

More after the jump.
