So this is how my glorious NFL opening weekend ends: Sitting here in the waning moments of Monday, rooting for the Raiders to beat the Broncos so that I can finish near the top of my pick ‘em pool—but hoping they do so without too much help from Darren McFadden, lest my fantasy-league opponent come from behind in the final game. The Chiefs? Oh, right, that’s what this weekend was originally supposed to be about…

What is there to say, really? What occurred Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead was worse than the lockout, worse than the horrible preseason—unless, as I daydreamed at times during the game, this still was the preseason. How else to explain the lack of competition and emotion, the stadium that emptied in the third quarter, and all those Chiefs on the field who probably don’t deserve to make the team? All we could hope for was that none of our top starters would get hurt.

Well sir….I’m sure I am not the only Chiefs fan who felt stinging disappointment on the ride home from Arrowhead Sunday night. Lyle Graverson filled us in on his disappointments. Hindsight is perfect, they say. Well hindsight should have told me some things that didn’t occur to me until we started getting our junk kicked during the third quarter.

1. Chan Gailey was our offensive coordinator less than two years ago. We didn’t burn our playbook last season, I am relatively certain we didn’t burn it this year either.

2. Chan Gailey and the Bills almost kicked our tails in a game last year at home during a season that we won the AFC West title.  They were only going to get tougher.

3. Matt Cassel was playing hurt.

4. Our very promising new tight end  Tony Moeaki is out for the year. Pope is trying to fill those  shoes and runs like Bigfoot.

I am not an eternal optimist when it comes to the Chiefs. But I’m not rambling Lyle Graverson either.
