*Update: 5 minutes after I posted this story, Bob Fescoe tweeted that Mays and Belcher ran with the first team today at practice.

The last couple of weeks we have been bringing you the Chiefs depth chart, which has been released every Monday. The chart has mostly remained the same, though there have been some changes at MLB. The Chiefs released another depth chart today and once again, Williams and Mays are back at starting MLB.

For weeks, Todd Haley has been telling us not to pay too much attention to the Depth Chart. Yet we have, debating whether or not Jamaal Charles should be ahead of Thomas Jones and if it really mattered.

Well, it turns out, it doesn’t. We should have been listening to Haley.

Last week, Belcher and Johnson were listed as the “starting” middle linebackers and Thomas Jones was listed as the “starting” running back.

Fast forward to Friday’s game against the Eagles and Jamaal Charles takes the first snap at RB and Williams and Mays take the first series at MLB.

So much for following the depth chart.

In regards to the running back situation, Haley has said that the Chiefs are likely to go with the “hot hand.” If their linebackers continue to play well, they may do the same thing at that position. They very well may run a rotation of Williams, Mays, Belcher, DJ, Vrabel and Studebaker until one of them steps forward and says “You can’t take me off the field. I’m too important.”

Per NFL rules the Chiefs have to release a depth chart but there is no rule that says they need to follow it. For now, we shouldn’t get our facemasks in a knot over the depth chart.

Let’s see what happens on the field.

The Chiefs have released the depth chart for this week. Though Todd Haley has said not to pay too much attention to these early depth charts (the Chiefs have to release one weekly per NFL rules), I know many of you will be happy to see that Jovan Belcher and Derrick Johnson have surpassed Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays as the starting middle linebackers.

Despite Casey Weigmann starting at center on Sunday at practice, Rudy Niswanger is still listed as the starting center. There were no other major changes as far as I can see. Despite a poor performance against the Falcons, Ryan O’Callaghan remains the starting RT and John McGraw is holding steady at the FS spot.
And yes, Thomas Jones is listed ahead of Jamaal Charles.

The full depth chart is after the jump.

Now that the Chiefs have wrapped up their Rookie Mini Camp, they will turn their attention to the Organized Team Activities (OTA’s) which begin on May 17th.

Per NFL rules, the Chiefs can only have 14 of these “practices” before training camp, one of which can be mandatory. The Chiefs schedule is as follows:

May 17-19, May 24-25, May 27, June 1-3, June 5-7 (Mandatory Mini Camp) June 7-9, June 14-15

Now most of the veterans are already in Kansas City going through the offseason conditioning program. By all accounts, the program is brutal but should have the players in incredible shape come training camp.

The rookies, however, are not allowed to participate in anymore workouts with the team until May 16, per NCAA rules.

“It’s a very important weekend for us and for them,” said head coach Todd Haley in a press conference on April 30th. It’s just really critical that they get a lot out of this and go back home, which they have to go back home, that’s by NCAA rule, no matter what; whether they’re in school, out of school, graduated, not graduated, they’ve got to go back home until May 16. Right now, they are 18 workouts behind the guys (veterans) that have been here since the end of March, and by the time they get back, they’ll be 27 workouts behind. It was pretty obvious today during practice that they’re well behind (in terms of the conditioning program).”

The rookies are going to be on their own for the next couple of weeks and I am willing to bet the Chiefs strength and conditioning coaches gave them a strict workout to follow wile they are away.

Are you getting excited, Addicts? The rookies have gotten their feet wet, the team is working out together and come May 17th, the real work begins. We are only 3 months away from the August preseason schedule and just a little over 4 months away from Monday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium!

All seven of the Chiefs draft choices spoke to the media for a few moments during the rookie camp, and all of them repeatedly used words like compete, opportunity, willing to contribute, do anything I’m asked. It almost made you think they were scripted.

“There is a positive energy about this whole group,” Haley said. “I continually remind them that they don’t really know anything right now. They don’t know what they don’t know.

“We don’t care how you got here. Once you are here you are just another helmet with a piece of tape on it and we are going to try to figure out if you can help us win.”

All of the team’s draft choices and college free agents were on the field. The Chiefs do not release the names of their tryout players, but the lone quarterback was Bill Stull (above) out of Pittsburgh. During his five seasons with the Panthers, Stull threw for 5,252 yards, 32 touchdown passes and 18 interceptions.

The seven first-year players that took part were: RB Kestahn Moore, WR Chandler Williams, OT Jermail Porter, DE Bobby Greenwood, CB Jackie Bates, S Reshard Langford and S Ricky Price. All seven were with the Chiefs in ‘09 on the roster or practice squad. Only Price was active for any game day action last year.

“It’s a real benefit for those guys,” Haley said. “They haven’t played a lot. They’ve been around the team some, but they get the chance to have a head start.”

I recently asked our readers what they would like to see added to Arrowhead Addict. Porter Park was the first to respond and asked for an updated Depth Chart feature for the Chiefs during the offseason. So I started looking around the sites and couldn’t find an updated one that I liked. The Chiefs website only gave us one from last season and won’t have a new one until training camp. NFL.com even had Brodie Croyle listed as J. Croyle.

After looking at other sites and listening to our loyal readers, I decided what better to do with a snow day than to make an Arrowhead Addict Depth Chart. This will be mostly speculation since the Chiefs organization doesn’t let us have contact with them (talk to Carl and Clark about that). Well, enough about the <strike>Chiefs</strike> Cheaps’ front office, here is the newest feature at Arrowhead Addict:

(This is also a new page between the header and the blog posts)
