For all the bad news that is coming out of Kansas City this season, there are some positive things happening.

Mainly, second year OLB Justin Houston is budding into a star.

The Chiefs selected Houston in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. Houston was seen by many as a potential first round selection; however, a failed drug test at the scouting combine is often blamed for his slide into the third round.

The Chiefs snagged Houston up and it he is making good on their investment. Houston has not had any off-field troubles since coming to KC but more importantly, his on-field performance has been terrific.

Houston snagged the starting role out of the gate as a rookie, but the NFL lockout hurt rookies the most and Houston’s lack of experience showed. He quickly lost his starting role and was relegated to sub-package defense.

Then, suddenly, Houston began to improve. We chronicled Houston’s rise here at Arrowhead Addict, using his Pro Football Focus grades to back us up. He began the season with four poor games. Then, after moving to second string, he turned in four pretty average games. He wasn’t making a huge impact but he wasn’t playing nearly as badly as he had earlier in the season. We wondered aloud if Houston would make further progress over his next four games.

And he did.

Starting in Week 10 against the Broncos, Houston scored his highest PFF grade of the season with a +2.7 (+3.0 run defense). He started and struggled the next week against the Patriots but then it was off to the races with overall game grades of +4.3, +3.3, -0.9, +1.4, +1.4, +3.6 to finish the season. PFF credited him with six sacks and 13 QB hurries. He also was responsible for 32 stops on the season.

In 2012, Houston picked up where he left off in 2011. In fact, as of this moment, Houston is Pro Football Focus’s highest graded 3-4 OLB, with a mark of +18.0.

And get this: Houston’s worst game of the season was last week against the Denver Broncos (-1.5), a game in which he recorded two sacks and four stops.

What is really remarkable about Houston’s season is that he’s managed to do it despite the fact that the team around him is terrible. Kansas City’s offense is so bad that the team didn’t play with a lead until Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Houston had his best game of the season, raking up a grade of +6.0.

In fact, if not for Houston, the Chiefs would likely be 0-11. RB Jamaal Charles is often credited for fueling KC’s only win of the season vs. the New Orleans Saints. While the game certainly wouldn’t have been won if not for Charles, they wouldn’t have won without Houston either. The former Georgia Bulldog sacked Drew Brees three times, once in the endzone for a crucial safety. The Chiefs won the game in overtime, which means without the safety, KC likely wouldn’t have been able to complete its comeback.

There is a lot of work that still needs to be done in Kansas City, particularly on offense, but even during one of the worst seasons in franchise history, Justin Houston has shown he’ll be a force for years to come.

Go ahead, double team Tamba Hali. Double him all day long.

Justin Houston dares you.

The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be developing one of the most dynamic pass rushing duos in the NFL and Tamba Hali doesn’t even have a sack yet.

The Chiefs got out of the gate slow but their defense appeared to be coming together Sunday in a 27-24 OT victory over the New Orleans Saints. Hali, long the team’s only consistent pass rushing option, was suspended for the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. His absence showed as Falcons QB Matt Ryan torched the KC D. Then again, Ryan is doing a lot of torching these days.

This week, however, Hali and Houston really seemed to be hitting their stride. The Saints seemed well aware of how dangerous Hali can be and they double teamed him on multiple occasions. Houston, who is emerging as one of the league’s best young players, saw many a favorable matchup and he took advantage, finishing the day with three sacks (one for a crucial safety) and two pass defenses.

In fact, since a breakout game against the Denver Broncos in 2011, Houston has 46 tackles, five pass defenses and 9.5 sacks in an 11-game span.

KC fans may be concerned about Hali’s lack of sacks thus far but they shouldn’t be. KC’s defense struggled mightily in Hali’s first game of the season vs. the Buffalo Bills and the Saints paid so much attention to him Sunday that Houston was able to make a strong case for AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Hali is going to get his. He has been one of the most consistent pass rushers in the NFL over the last five years or so and he’s done it with little to no help on the other side. With Houston quickly becoming a force, the Chiefs now have a two-headed monster coming after a QB near you.

And if the KC secondary can stick to their men long enough, more sacks could be coming in bunches.

For both players.

If you are looking for one NFL player that is capable of a breakout season in 2012 then look no farther than Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston.

The Chiefs drafted Houston in the third round out of Georgia and getting him there was a steal. Houston was projecting as a mid-first round pick before he tested positive for marijuana use at the NFL Combine. Teams backed away from a player stupid enough to smoke weed so close to such an important event but the Chiefs felt that Houston’s value was too great to pass on in round three. They also felt that, after talking with Houston, that there wouldn’t be any future trouble.

So far, KC’s investment is paying off big time.

Houston got off to a slow start last season (what Chiefs player didn’t), but by the end of the year he had forced his way into the starting lineup and soon he became an every-down player. In fact, Houston’s numbers and grades from Pro Football Focus indicated that he could be a monster in 2012. First, take a look at Houston’s overall grades from 2011.

Houston’s first four weeks were crap. After that he didn’t play as much and when he did he was average. Then, from Week 10 on, save a slip-up against the eventual AFC Champions Patriots, Houston was a beast. He finished the season with an overall grade of +6.8.

Yet there was a clear moment when Houston “got it” and it appeared to come around Week 10. We were tracking Houston’s progress here on AA and we had already noticed he had gone from bad to average and correctly predicted that he was about to turn the corner.*

*This is just one of the many reasons you should subscribe to premium stats at Pro Football Focus.

So what kind of season might Houston have in 2012? Chances are he could be even better than he was from Week 10 on of last season. But what if he was just equally as good? What would his numbers look like?

In 2011,Houston finished the year with six sacks, three QB hits, 13 QB hurries, three batted passes, 45 tackles and 32 stops.*

*The official NFL numbers credit Houston for a few more tackles. They also credit him with -.5 a sack. We’re using PFF numbers here because we believe them to be more accurate. PFF doesn’t give out 1/2 sacks. If two players get there at the same time, they both get credit for a sack.

His grades from PFF were as follows:

Overall: +6.8, Run D: +7.4, Pass Coverage: -7.6

If we take his numbers from Week 10 on, average them out and project them for an entire season, they look like this.

12 sacks

4 QB hits

22 QB hurries

58 tackles

50 stops

+33.4 overall grade

How does that +33.4 overall grade stack up against all 3-4 OLB from 2011?

It would be good for #3 in the entire NFL behind only Cameron Wake (+43.5) and Aldon Smith (+36.4) and ahead of players like Demarcus Ware (+32.6) and even Tamba Hali (+31.4).

The 50 stops?

Yeah, that’d be the best in the NFL.

The stops are really important because those are plays basically blown up by Houston. Add to that 12 sacks and you’ve got yourself an absolute force at OLB opposite Tamba Hali.

2012 will be Houston’s second season in Romeo Crennel’s defense. He’ll likely benefit from a full offseason of work and a more structured preseason plan from Romeo Crennel rather than Todd Haley’s “we’ll take it slow approach.” Houston should be ready right out of the gate this season and if he can string together 17 weeks of play comparable to his last eight weeks of football in 2011, the Kansas City Chiefs defense is going to be very, very good.

And Justin Houston could be heading to the Pro Bowl.

We always want to believe we’re right, but we ain’t none of us perfect. My yearly IWWAs are a recognition of that. For this, the fourth annual IWWAs, I got a little help from my friends. This way those of you who don’t believe I could ever be wrong about anything can skip my section and move on to the rest of the staff. Or, for those of you who Internet-hate one of us, take delight in watching the object of your hatred participate in the ceremonial eating of crow.

We’d also like to hear your biggest IWWAs in the comments. This is a healthy process. We will emerge stronger, and smarter. Much like Barry Richardson will, after one more year of development. B-Rich in ’12!

Big Matt

1) I thought the insanity would stop with Thom Jones. I was wrong. Sometimes coaches just like bad players. If following KC sports has taught me anything, its that. Vrabel, Yuni, Willie Bloomquist, Dexter McCleon, Ross Gload, Kyle Davies, Larry Johnson, Mike Brown (QB of the defense!), there really is no point in continuing this list. It’s a mile long. Bad veterans who the people of Kansas City have been told are good. Why? That bizarre combination of age, intangibles, and affordability that this city’s sports leaders have always loved so well.

Jones, though, is the worst. He averaged 3 yards per carry this year and led our team in carries. There is no excuse for that. I knew he’d get his touches this year, Jones ALWAYS gets his touches no matter how bad he is. This is not his first season averaging under 4 per carry. It’s his seventh. In fact, his career average is a tick under 4.

Still, I assumed after last season that nobody would be crazy enough to feature him. I was wrong twice, because both our head coaches did just that. Thomas Jones is this century’s Rasputin. Discuss.

2) I thought Wallace Gilberry would have a breakout year. I was wrong.- I love pass rushers and loathe block eaters. So naturally, Wally Gilby is my boy. His production dipped this year, which was disappointing. But then again, his PT seems to have dipped as well. Gotta stop that run though, right? After all, if a team can run on you, you’re toast! Oh, wait…..

Personal misgivings about the D-line aside, this was not the year I’d envisioned from Gilberry. So yes, I was wrong about him. I still expect him to sign with a 4-3 team and do very well. But who will nosh the blocks for that team while Gilberry is showing off with the sacks and the forced fumbles? Luckily we’re too smart to ever encounter that problem. LSU Block Skwad: FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!

3) I thought Haley would insist on starting Studebaker over Justin Houston. I was wrong. What an awesome surprise Justin Houston was. Turns out marijuana users can function in society! Still, it is illegal. Better to drink a dozen beers and get yourself out in public, I say. Smoking this plant at your house is simply too destructive.

In all seriousness, I assumed Haley would give Studebaker the Vrabel treatment and Houston the Studebaker treatment this year. Since we found out The Student Baker is bad, it was time for him to become the Teacher Baker. That’s just how Haley rolls, right?

Happy to be wrong here. Houston was maybe the biggest bright spot of this entire season.

4) I thought Pioli would pick up more locker room leaders in the draft. I was wrong. We like to give Scott Pioli a hard time around here, and rightly so. His excruciating pace and sloth-like level of activity are deserving of ridicule. As are “the right 53″, “substance over sizzle”, and any other junk catch-phrases he and his cronies come up with to justify basement payrolls.

However, his draft this year was downright interesting. I didn’t think he had that in him. 2010 was a good class, but the focus on the locker room seemed to be par for the course. The 2011 draft was anything but. I’m sure this class will take its lumps; the learning curve was already shown to be pretty steep for a lot of them. Still, I was extremely happy, and surprised, to see Pioli going for talent rather than team captain status. Turns out he can make exciting picks……if Bill Belichick tells him to.

5) I thought Romeo Crennel’s press conferences would be pretty similar to Todd Haley’s. Thankfully, I was wrong. Is it possible those non-answers were Haley’s idea all along? Surely Pioli encouraged that, right? Did he wise up and instruct Crennel to provide real answers? So many questions. I know some of you don’t care about this stuff, but I want answers! My attempts to spy on the Chiefs in the past haven’t gone well. Time for a new disguise. Do you guys think I could pass as Bill Muir?

6) I thought Todd Haley’s preseason strategy was ridiculous. Way off on that one, clearly. Did you guys see how much fresher we were after Crennel took over? We have Haley to thank for that!

The rest of the staff after le jump:

Kansas City Chiefs rookie Justin Houston has been coming on strong in recent weeks and now he has been nominated for the Rookie of the Week award.

Houston had a break-out game against the Chicago Bears and was a big part of the reason the Chiefs were able to get the win. Houston was second on the team in tackles with seven while adding three sacks, a forced fumble and a batted pass.

Houston has some stiff competition with potential Rookie of the Year candidate Cam Newton. Newton ran for three TDs and threw for another Sunday in Carolina’s victory over the Bucs.

Also up for the hardware are Colin McCarthy (Titans), Christian Ponder (Vikings) and T.J. Yates (Texans).

Vote for Houston at NFL.com.

Some weeks I start planning my “Armchair Addict” column several days in advance. I like to dig around and do some research and maybe see if anyone else in the blogosphere has written anything similar to what I’m brainstorming. Sometimes I’ll even write the complete column a day or so in advance and then go back and “tweak” it leading up to it hitting the site if I have a new idea or come up with a better way to get my point accross.

This my friends, is not one of those weeks. I’ll spare you all the personal details and just say I’ve been under the weather. So this week, for better or worse, you’re just getting my unfiltered random thoughts coming off the Chiefs 10-3 win over the Bears.

* First off, am I the only one that found this game hillarious to watch? I mean from the absolutely inept offenses, to the injury to Orton on his FIRST SNAP, to the Chiefs finally needing a deflected Hail Mary pass to break their TD drought, to the debilitating penalties by both teams at the worst possible times, the Bears’ missed FG, Hanie throwing a pick in the end zone and overthrowing a wide open WR for an easy score, or my favorite the wide open Barber TD pass that was called back by a penalty, I just felt like the entire game needed the Looney Tunes theme playing in the background. Anybody else find this game funny or has the combination of lack of sleep and medication just made me slap happy?

* Even though I found it humorous that the Chiefs needed a deflected Hail Mary to break their TD drought doesn’t mean I think the play was complete luck. To my eye, McCluster was clearly assigned the job of standing in front of the “jump mob” to watch for deflections. His back is to the QB and he’s watching the jumping players. This makes since given that McCluster is so short that he’s not out jumping anyone for a ball in the air. That’s good coaching.

* Thomas Jones had 36 yards on 16 carries. That’s 2.3 yards per carry. The sad part is that we can’t scream that those carries should have gone to Battle because he still averaged almost a yard less per carry then Jones did. If we can’t find a QB that can throw more than short crossing routes and screens, our RBs have no chance. Dex was the only one that was effective at all on a couple of delays and draws.

More after the jump:

It has been a while since I’ve done an “Earning Their Arrowheads” column because, quite frankly, I didn’t feel enough players were earning them to warrant a post.

Yesterday was a different story. Here are the players that earned their Arrowheads on Sunday!

Justin Houston

Houston is at the top of the list. He was sensational yesterday. If the rookie can continue that level of play for the rest of the season, then the Chiefs defense is going to continue to perform well. Houston looks like he could a difference-maker for the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs may not make the playoffs this season thanks to inconsistent play and devastating injuries, but if rookie Justin Houston is any indication of the future, KC fans should be excited.

Houston was taken by the Chiefs in the third round of last year’s NFL Draft. Projected to be selected in the first round, Houston’s draft stock slid thanks to a failed drug test at the NFL Combine. In the third round, however, Houston was worth the risk.

Like many rookies often do, Houston struggled early as he adjusted to the NFL. His lot wasn’t made any easier by the NFL lockout, but Houston’s talent was quickly on display during the preseason. It seemed only a matter of time before Houston turned his athletic talents into production on the field.

The Kansas City Chiefs put up a heck of a fight Sunday Night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While the end result was yet another loss, there were some good things that happened in this game that should give Chiefs fans confidence for the rest of the season and for 2012.

I will get into more of a breakdown of the game once the Pro Football Focus grades come out but for now, here are some good things I saw in last night’s game.

-Justin Houston

By my eye, Justin Houston is leaps and bounds better than he was early on in the season. At the beginning of the year, Houston was really struggling to set the edge and was often getting blown backwards by blockers. He was eventually yanked in favor of Andy Studebaker.

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have a lot to feel good about right now but one bright spot amidst a season of injuries and disappointing losses is the development of OLB Justin Houston.

A third-round pick with first round talent, Houston slipped in the draft after reportedly failing a drug test at NFL Scouting Combine. Since being drafted there have been no signs of trouble with Houston. In fact, the rookie seems to be very silently going about his business in his rookie season.

After a promising preseason, Houston began the year in a timeshare with Cameron Sheffield. Houston was playing most running downs and them coming out in favor of Sheffield in passing situations. The rookie struggled mightily early. Pro Football Focus gave Houston an overall grade of -8.6 through his first four games.

Since then, however, Houston has been slowly showing improvement. His Pro Football Focus grades in each game have been trading much closer to average than poor.

Matt Cassel

The entire team is playing like garbage and that isn’t putting Matt Cassel in a very good position to succeed. That being said, the dude has to step up. The line play may be inconsistent and the running game non-existent but he has enough weapons at his disposal now, Moeaki or no Moeaki, that he should be getting the job done. He’s missing wide-open receivers in favor of check-downs and passes to the flat.

We’ve seen Cassel play well. His game against the Titans last season was fantastic. The Chiefs need that Matt Cassel to show up and pull them out of this funk. He’s the only one that can do it. Jamaal Charles, remarkable as he is, isn’t going to be able to get much going if teams don’t fear Cassel. If Matt can’t step up and make defenses pay by making accurate passes and smart reads over the middle of the field, the Chiefs are in for a long season.

And they’ll be in the market for a new QB.

Jim Zorn, I’m looking at you.

Before I delve into the title subject matter, I want to first say a few words about our remaining rookie holdout. There are now only 4 unsigned rookies in the league, 3 of them of 1st rounders. Guess which one of those 4 was not a 1st round pick?

Justin, dude, are you freaking high? Probably shouldn’t answer that, huh? You were a 3rd round pick for reasons that nobody but yourself are to blame. Own up to it, live with it, move on; you are, without question, not making life any better for yourself by following the course you are on.

At this point, there is no acceptable explanation for Justin Houston’s hold out unless he’s not ready, physically, mentally, and/or emotionally, to play football in the NFL. If that is the problem, then I really have to start questioning whether this is a guy I still want on my team. If that’s not the problem, then he is just hurting himself as a result of some very flawed reasoning. Rookie salaries are now more slotted than ever and given where he was taken in the 3rd round, there can be no financial aspect to this deal that is worth quibbling over.

Honestly, I’m beginning to feel both sorry and embarrassed for Scott Pioli about this pick.

Kelly “Queequeg” Gregg after the bounce.

Why isn’t Justin Houston in training camp with the rest of his draft class?

There hasn’t been a lot of talk about Houston since football has returned. After all, we’ve been too busy worrying about free agency to worry about contract negotiations. Now however, with the days ticking by, I’m growing concerned.

Houston is one of the 2011 draft picks that I am most excited about. By now you should no Houston’s story but if you don’t, I’ll give you a quick recap. Houston was projected as a late first, early second round pick at OLB. He was particularly valuable because in his last year at Georgia, the team switched to a 3-4 defense. Houston went from being an undersized DE to a prototypical 3-4 OLB. He racked up a ridiculous 18.5 tackles for a loss that year and threw in 10 sacks for good measure. At the combine, a 270 pound Houston showed his speed by turning in a 4.68 40. He was a lock to be a top 50 draft pick.

Then he reportedly failed his drug test.

First let me apologize for not posting in over a month. In the last month I got married in Hawaii and flew off to Europe for a three week honeymoon. I came back to a boatload of work. (It’s been a really hard month; your sympathy would be appreciated). During that time, I refused any internet access, and as such, I am not up on our current beloved Chiefs’ news. The good thing is there really hasn’t been any, (other than here at AA of course). But I digress.

The word on the street is that the Owners and Players have 85% of an agreement in place and the lockout will be over soon enough. As I have said on previous occasions, the lockout to me has been, well, kind of trivial. They were always going to play football. The decision is simple: gripe about how you do not make enough money and then in fact not make any money at all, or gripe about how you do not make any money, work out a better deal (even if it is not exactly what you want), and then make money. It is common sense. But I digress again.

Everyone knows that I have been clamoring for a true NT for the last couple of years. In the 2010 draft, I wanted the Chiefs to select Cam Thomas, in fact during AA’s 2010 draft chat, Merlin, myself and everyone chatting that year wanted the Chiefs to draft a true NT, especially Cam Thomas. That did not happen. (Cam Thomas was then selected by our rivals the Chargers in the 6th round. He played in 6 games, had 7 tackles and two sacks). I thought the Chiefs must know what they are doing; they must have done their homework and not liked what they saw out of any of the true NT prospects in the 2010 Draft. I knew the 2011 draft would be different. They had to get their true big bodied NT in order to shore up our run defense, and they had to make it priority number one. However, they did not.

More after the jump…

The Kansas City Chiefs 2011 NFL Draft was a success as far as filling positions of need on the roster. The Chiefs addressed their needs at wide receiver, center, and even nose tackle. However, one of the needs the Chiefs did not fill, and many expected them too was at offensive tackle.

Some people, analysts and fans alike, did not like the direction the Chiefs took in the draft. One of the concerns is that the Chiefs traded out of the 21st pick when offensive tackles Anthony Castonzo and Gabe Carimi were both available. The Chiefs eventually took Jonathan Baldwin, who has character concerns of his own, at the 26th pick in the first round.

There could be arguments made all day about whether the Chiefs selected the right players in the 2011 NFL Draft. The truth of the matter is the draft is over and the players that were selected are the players the Chiefs are stuck with. Each of these players brings something different and unique to the Chiefs roster, so without further ado lets dive into each draft picks role and expectations entering the 2011 NFL season.

When I was looking at the way the big boards seemed to be shaking out leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft, I realized that the best day for the Chiefs would probably be Day Two. The reason for this is that there were multiple players at multiple need positions that seemed to be a good fit for Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs looked to have their pick of players in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. So, let’s take a look at their picks and what they bring to the Chiefs.

(First, let me get this out of the way: If you are anything like me you don’t even care about the lockout anymore. The last couple of months I try to ignore it. I act like it is not even going on. Why? Because I know it is just a sham. There will be football this year because the same greed that is causing the players and owners to fight over money will compel them to play when the time comes so that they do not lose any money. It is simple math. It is impossible for you to disagree. I dare you. )

In any event…

I was perplexed when the Kansas City Chiefs took Miami DE Allen Bailey in the third round of the 2011 draft. Don’t we already have depth at DE? We have a stud in Glen Dorsey, a serviceable (and expensive) DE in Tyson Jackson, a stud in Shaun Smith, and a developing stud in Wallace Gilberry. Do we even have room for the 285 pound 6’3 Bailey? Sure, you can never have enough depth, right? But to use a third round on a possible third stringer seems high, doesn’t it? Unless….

More after the jump…

The Chiefs had Houston in for a visit and we did a write up on him on our Chiefs Draft Interests page. You can check out the entire writeup here but below is a bit on Houston from that article:

If the Chiefs are looking for a pass rusher opposite Tamba Hali then Houston could be a pretty good option, especially if Akeem Ayers is off the board at #21. Still, what Larry says about Houston’s instincts against the pass concern me a bit. KC’s linebackers are woefully bad defending the pass and I think I’d rather have a guy who is more of a complete player. The fact of the matter is that Tamba Hali is never going to be a guy the Chiefs want dropping back in coverage. If Houston can’t develop better coverage skills the Chiefs would be stuck with two one trick ponies on the outside.

Houston was projected to go in the first round but he saw his stock plummet when word broke that he failed a drug test for weed at the NFL Combine.

Houston has serious skills and if the Chiefs believe he will get his act together he could be an absolute steal for KC in the third round.

What do you think Addicts? Was Houston the right pick for should the Chiefs have gone for a player that was a “better citizen?”

The National Football Post is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to meet with LB Justin Houston out of Georgia.

I thought this was a perfect chance to review another potential Chiefs draft prospect.

Houston played his ball at Georgia and is listed as the 3rd best OLB in the draft by NFL Draft Scout. He is listed at 6-3, 270 and ran a 4.62 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine. His Pro Day is scheduled for March 22nd. He is projected to go somewhere in the first round and should at the very least, be a top 40 pick.

Let’s take a look at Houston’s scouting report from With the First Pick. Larry McDaniel did the analysis:

The National Football Post is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to meet with LB Justin Houston out of Georgia.

Houston, a potential first round draft pick, will also meet with the Bills and Vikings according to NFP.

We’ll post a breakdown of Houston in just a bit but this news gives us a little bit more of a glimpse inside Scott Pioli’s first round thinking. While not every visit is an indicator that the Chiefs are going to take the player, it is an decent indicator of what they feel their team needs are. Last year they looked at a number of safeties and cornerbacks and then drafted Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis and Javier Arenas.

News has already broken that the Chiefs looked at QB Dalton, which could mean that Brodie Croyle’s status as backup QB in Kansas City could be over soon.

Check back in just a bit for a breakdown of Houston.
