Kevin Acee of the San Diego Tribune reported tonight that Jon Gruden plans to return to coaching in 2012.

Almost immediately, our old friend Jason Whitlock began lobbying on Twitter for Gruden’s Monday Night Football job.

I coveted 2 jobs as a kid: 1. columnist at Chicago Tribune replacing Royko; 2. Loud-mouth on MNF replacing Cosell. (I’m going 0-fer-2)

Is Whitlock just joking? Who knows. I do know he is a pretty calculating guy and if he is saying on Twitter that he wants the job, there is probably some small kernel of truth to it.

They’ll never hire him of course but it is fun to think about. How would you like to hear Whitlock yucking it up on ESPN? He would probably work in “the refs are racist” as much as Gruden does “I like that guy.”

]]> Still got my NFLN IV drip going. Jon Gruden just nailed it. He said two things that really struck a chord with me, and I’m paraphrasing here:

1. If you’re drafting in the top five, it’s because you have a problem at quarterback.

2. New coaches almost always address the quarterback position.

I think his analysis is spot on.  Our Chiefs and the Lions have long had quarterback issues. Derek Anderson flopped for the Browns, and Brady Quinn is still a question mark. As for the Rams and Seahawks, their vet QBs couldn’t stay on the field. Besides, Mark Bulger and Matt Hasselbeck might both be washed up at this point.

Every team in the draft’s top five has serious QB issues. There’s no denying that. Looks like Chucky might have a future in front of the camera without getting offered any more Child’s Play sequels.
