The Kansas City Chiefs recently cut tackle Jared Gaither.

Gaither has since been picked up by the San Diego Chargers and is starting for them at LT.The Chargers have won two straight games since picking up Gaither and the tackle has played so well that he received the game ball from Norv Turner last week.

This week the Chargers are playing the Baltimore Ravens, another of Gaither’s former teams, and while talking to the media he was asked about being cut from Kansas City.

Jared Gaither on being cut by the Chiefs: ‘Now they fired their coach. So, they have some things they have to figure out obviously.’

Todd Haley and Bill Muir never gave Gaither a chance even with Barry Richardson sticking up the entire NFL at RT. I can’t blame him for being angry.

A couple of weeks ago Gaither was briefly unemployed, and Haley was an NFL head coach. Now Gaither is a starting LT, and Haley is joining Herm Edwards on an episode of Audibles on ESPN. Things change fast in the NFL.

Former Kansas City Chiefs T Jared Gaither, who the team surprisingly cut two weeks ago, turned in his second strong performance in a row Sunday for the San Diego Chargers.

“I did it more for what we have done offensively,” Chargers coach Norv Turner said. “Then, when you watch the tape, he was deserving of the game ball. I don’t know where we would be if we didn’t get Gaither.”

There are a lot of people who deserve to take some crap for the Gaither disaster. Todd Haley and Bill Muir were out there watching the guy play every day so they are at the top of the list. Right behind them is Scott Pioli who actually made the personnel move.

Kansas City Chiefs tackle Barry Richardson is, according to Pro Football Focus and the eyes of thousands of KC fans across the world, the absolute worst tackle playing football in the NFL today.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ coaching staff, however, seems to think Richardson is just fine.

In a move that will likely keep philosophers busy for decades, the Chiefs decided to up and cut Jared Gaither last week. Other than getting into the game for a couple of multiple tackle sets, goal-line plays and quick injury fill-ins, the Chiefs never put Gaither on the field to take significant snaps at either tackle position.

But more on Gaither later.

For now, it is time someone took the Chiefs to task on Barry Richardson.

The Kansas City Chiefs have promoted rookie T David Mims to the 53-man roster, the team announced today.

Mims replaces former Baltimore Raven Jared Gaither who, despite high expectations, never seemed to catch on with the coaching staff.

From KCChiefs.com:

Mims (6-8, 335) spent the first 11 games of the 2011 season on the Chiefs practice squad after entering the NFL as a rookie free agent with the club. He opened 42 games as a four-year starter at Virginia Union, earning All-America honors his final two seasons.

Unless there is an injury I doubt we will be seeing Mims in action any time soon. Steve Maneri is technically ahead of him in the pecking order so he might get the first crack at playing time should Branden Albert or Barry Richardson go down.

Now that we know it is official, we can continue obsessing about Gaither’s replacement. If I were a betting man, I’d put my money on Mims being promoted from the practice squad.

Even if the Chiefs really like Maneri, rolling with only three tackles is kind of risky, especially when one of those tackles is named Barry Richardson.

Then again, I know the Chiefs like versatility on their offensive line, and they may feel that Jon Asamoah could step in and play a little tackle in an emergency situation.

Update: The move has also now been announced on KCChiefs.com.

With the still unconfirmed news that the Kansas City Chiefs have released T Jared Gaither, our attention now turns to his replacement.

The fact that Gaither is gone leaves the Chiefs a little short on depth. They now have only Branden Albert, Barry Richardson and Steve Maneri as the remaining tackles on their roster.

It is possible the team could be prepared to promote former Virginia Union tackle David Mimms from the practice squad. Mimms is 23 and is listed at 6-8, 335. He has been on the practice squad all season.

More options, after the jump.

The Kansas City Chiefs have cut T Jared Gaither, according to Pro Football Talk.

This obviously comes as a huge shock considering mot KC fans have been screaming for the team to start Gaither instead of the revolving door that is Barry Richardson.

Gaither got in the game for a snap last week against the Steelers when Branden Albert came out with an injury. He promptly jumped offside and was promptly yanked on the next play when Albert came back in.

I’m guessing the Chiefs just haven’t been thrilled with Gaither’s progress and effort. They have absolutely no depth at the tackle position and for the team to cut him now is a major red flag that they are fed up with him for some reason.

If the report is true (the Chiefs haven’t confirmed it yet), then KC has an open roster spot. They might want to consider filling that spot with a tackle that can block someone.

Just a suggestion.

Looks like we’re stuck with B-Rich this week. This is another unfortunate setback for Gaither.

Chiefs fans, myself included, are always itching to see each year’s new defense. Under Vermeil we knew the offense would be good, under Herm bad. Not a lot of fluctuation there. The defense was bad throughout the decade, but every year we convinced ourselves they’d be better. We listed our reasons why. Even a modest improvement, such as Jared Allen brought, drove us wild. It was fun. The yearning for the 90s is palpable in Chiefs Nation. More than anything, we want our defense back.

Still, any time you take the #1 rushing offense in the league (“I’ll take a thunder and lightning, hold the thunder”) and add significant receiving talent, a fan base will lick its chops. This is the first time in five years I can remember going into a season with legitimate expectations for our offense. It’s all in place, right? Charles is still here, Cassel is coming into his own, <del>Terry Copper got inked to a new deal</del>, our receivers should be A LOT better, and we even have a new fullback. AA’s own Double D has been quoted as saying we’re one Thom Jones firing away from being unstoppable. With all of this coming together at the same time, what could go wrong?

the obvious answer after le jump:

Of course they did.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star is reporting via Twitter that Chiefs OT Jared Gaither is making a base salary of $685,000 this season. Teicher also reports that the team signed Gaither to a one-year deal.

Not bad for a player that could end up starting at one of the tackle positions.

As Teicher points out in his tweet, Gaither will be a huge bargain if he pans out. He also won’t suck the team dry of cap room if he doesn’t.

Scott Pioli continues to show he is a good bargain hunter. Let’s just hope his bargains bring in a big return in 2011.

Most of us around here at AA have been telling you for months that we don’t think the Chief need to draft a LT.

Still, I know there are a lot of you out there who do think the Chiefs should take a LT and move Albert to guard. It would be unfair for us to continue to ignore your cries in order to push our own agenda and thus, I am going to throw you a bone.

I still don’t think the Chiefs should draft a LT and I don’t think they will. I think they believe Branden Albert can be their LT for years to come, however, if I am wrong, and the Chiefs do want a new LT, I have a plan for how they can do it…after the jump.
