The Kansas City Chiefs have some business to attend to today at Arrowhead Stadium but to get to the playoffs they are going to needs some help elsewhere.

The fact that we are sitting here just the day before Christmas talking about KC getting into the playoffs is remarkable. With the injuries to Matt Cassel, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry, plus the firing of Todd Haley, the Chiefs are pretty fortunate to still be in the playoff discussion.

There are a few simple things that need to happen for KC to win the AFC West for the second straight season. I’ll break it down and tell you who you are rooting for today (other than the Chiefs) after the jump.

If you read my post last week, I posed the question whether it was time to abandon hope of the Chiefs amounting to anything this season. Ultimately, despite the pitiful showing at their home opener against Buffalo, I concluded that it was still too early to tell. Well, it turns out with RB Jamaal Charles out for the season (along with two of our star rookies from last year), it is time to admit that the wheels have come off of this team. As always I have turned to humor in this time of depression, and there are some funny thoughts that have helped get me through this troubled time.

= D Maybe Matt Cassel should add “Intercept Me Bro” to his line of K-Swiss ads.

= D Hey we re-signed Mike Cox! Now at least we get to giggle for the rest of the season when announcers say, “Mike Cox going up the middle!” or “Mike Cox had great penetration all day long!”*

= D I wonder if our replacement players will be guys that Pioli and Hunt find off the street holding signs claiming they “Will Work For Food” because that seems to best fit their team spending strategy.

*Thanks go to my brother for pointing that one out.

Fellow Kurt Vonnegut fans will appreciate this need for humor because when all hope seems to be lost in humanity, really what else is there left to do but laugh? Really it seems that we have regressed to the point that this is our only option. It is hard to believe that this post is coming just after Week Two of the regular season, but as Chiefs fans, we are used to it. The true team mantra has been and appears to remain Next Year as opposed to Chiefs Will.

What? Is there something wrong with that headline? It’s true, or at least factual. And so are these:

Chiefs Only Two Back In Race For AFC’s Top Seed

Chiefs Will Need To Settle For 14-2 Season

Chiefs Unbeaten Against Division In 2011

Clark Hunt Celebrates Another Year Of Record Profits

No, this is not going to be another Pollyanna-ish pep talk. To quote the guy who was proofreading the alphabet and noticed something missing between E and G: “F that.”

The point (if there’s a point) is that there really is no way to put a positive spin on what’s happening. The sad fact is that essentially all of us will admit there’s no way we’ll see any of those headlines a month or even a week from now (except, of course, for that last one). And there’s really no way to make sense,* or for that matter, fun, of all this, either.

*Be warned, this post will have a lot of asterisks and even double asterisks,** if only to fill space where there is no coherent line of reasoning.

**See?

There is no comedy here, unless it’s a Divine Comedy: The lockout was the first level of hell* and it has descended from there to the preseason and down with each regular-season game, and each new torn ACL. To paraphrase Mel Brooks, “Tragedy is when Jamaal Charles cuts his finger; comedy is when the Detroit Lions walk into an open sewer and die.” (Not exactly sure how or whether that applies, but I gotta fill this post with words, people.)

*Or if you insist on being an I-told-you-so realist, it probably started with the final regular-season game last year against the Raiders, followed by the Wild Card blowout…

Like all of you, I’ve got my computer desktop set with the official, AA-endorsed wallpaper. What a brilliant, visual reminder that the season hasn’t even really begun. And yet, it still feels all but over. (more…)

The Kansas City Chiefs defense improved greatly in 2010.

The additions of Eric Berry, Javier Arenas, Shaun Smith and the insertion of Derrick Johnson and Jovan Belcher into the starting lineup helped a unit that gave up 424 points in 2009 relinquish only 326. While the influx of players certainly helped, there was another addition to the defensive unit that also likely had a huge impact on the team’s performance.

Romeo Crennel.

Crennel did a fantastic join in 2010 of maximizing the talent he had available to him. The KC running game, combined with Cennel’s bend-but-don’t-break style of defense, allowed the Chiefs to extend games and allow their play-makers on defense to make plays.

The loss of Berry hurts, but the Chiefs still have loads of talent on defense with Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali.

The Lions figure to challenge KC’s weakened secondary now that Berry is done for the year. If the Chiefs want to have any chance of succeeding today, Crennel will need to have a scheme ready that will allow his defense to make up for the loss of one of their best players.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to get their season back on track when they travel to Detroit today to take on the Lions.

Here are five ways the Chiefs can escape the Motor City with a victory.

1. Show Up

This normally would go without saying and thus wouldn’t need to be mentioned here but unfortunately, we have to. The Chiefs have yet to show up to play football this season. They didn’t show up for the preseason, and they most certainly didn’t show up for the season opener. The Chiefs need to start this game taking care of the football, making smart decisions and playing as a team. If they don’t, none of the rest of the items on this list will be relevant.

2. Chiefs Running Backs

Jamaal Charles emerged last season as the Chiefs’ biggest playmaker on offense but touched the ball just 15 times last week. He was an effective on the ground against the Bills but had just ten carries as the Chiefs went away from their running game. Will they commit to keeping the ball in his hands this week, even if the Lions start to build a lead? The Lions will also have to look out for speedster Dexter McCluster, especially in the passing game. The Lions did a nice job of covering screen passes last week and need to continue their swarming style of tackling. Containing Charles and McCluster early will be a good sign.

Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft pick Jon Baldwin is unlikely to see action Sunday when the team takes on the Detroit Lions.

Baldwin has been out since the preseason when he reportedly got into a “scuffle” with Thomas Jones. The said scuffle resulted in Baldwin having a cast on his thumb and wrist ever since.

That is still the case this week. Baldwin has been seen by various media members going through footwork drills on the sidelines at practice but he has been extremely limited. He obviously isn’t catching any balls.

Baldwin was supposed to be a big target for Matt Cassel on the outside. It was expected that the rookie would pair with Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston to create a formidable passing attack for the Chiefs. Instead, Cassel is stuck with Jerheme Urban, a thus far underachieving Bowe and a slot receiver in Breaston who has yet to make any real impact.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to bounce back against the Detroit Lions Sunday, following their embarrassing 41-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills last week. It won’t be easy as the Lions appear to be a team on the rise, playing at home.

To get a better idea of what the Chiefs are up against, I sat down with Zac Snyder from FanSided’s Lions blog, SideLion Report. SLR is truly one of the finest blogs on the entire network and I strongly encourage you to make frequent trips over that way to get the scoop on all things Lions.

Now, let’s go Inside the Enemy Camp with SideLion Report!

How did the interior of that nasty Lions D-line perform in Week One?

Their play didn’t turn into a pile of sacks but they were active enough to keep Josh Freeman from getting comfortable. We have come to expect the heavy pass rush but their ability to stifle the Bucs’ running game was a great sign.

Here is a preview:

Zac Snyder: The Chiefs blowout loss to the Bills was one of the most surprising results in week one. What went so wrong for the Chiefs and is it possible to correct those issues for week two against the Lions?Patrick Allen: What didn’t go wrong?

I’ve spent three days analyzing what went wrong and it was a total team meltdown. Poor tackling, poor blocking, poor route running and poor QB play.

The Chiefs just aren’t ready for the season yet. I don’t think they’ll have their issues corrected by this weekend. They might not show signs of life for a few weeks. That is if their confidence isn’t crushed by then.

As of the time of this post, the kick off of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2011 season is a mere 120 hours away. It had been my intention, in a final effort at unbridled optimism before the first game starts, to put together the ultimate Season-Opening Pep Talk. Instead, since we’re all in this together, from the highs of last season to the lows of the lockout to whatever the hell you might call this preseason, I decided it would be better if we all write our own.

But to help, I composed this quick-n-easy Mad Lib. For anyone who doesn’t remember how this works, it’s pretty simple: Just fill in the first word that comes to mind after each prompt on the list, and then match it to the corresponding space(s) in the form that follows. If it all works out, you should have yourself a perfectly uplifting speech* to rally your spirits for Sunday!

*Special thanks to The Sports Cliché List for help in structuring a more authentically stereotypical pep talk.

PA: Once you get to the playoffs the expectations go up big time. Anything short of another AFC West title and a playoff win will probably be considered a disappointment.

I don’t see it that way. The Chiefs are still a very young team with a lot of developing players. A lot of young, upstart teams take a big step forward and then a step back before they move forward again. I think this is usually because that initial step forward came because of an easier schedule. Sometimes Cinderella arrives a little bit early to the ball, so to speak.

I could see the Chiefs going 9-7 or even 8-8 this season and then coming back in 2012 and making it to the AFC Championship game. It just depends. The Saints missed the playoffs one year and won the Super Bowl the next. Welcome to the NFL.

A couple of weeks ago I had a chance to sit down and talk with Zac Snyder from over at SideLion Report about the Kansas City Chiefs. Zach is interviewing the editor of each team the Lions will face in 2011. What he is doing is very similar to our “Inside The Enemy Camp” series that we do during the season.

Head over to SideLion Report to check out the entire interview. SLR is one of FanSided’s best blogs and is definitely the place to go if you are looking for any info on the Lions.

If you haven’t heard yet, teams other than the Kansas City Chiefs are picking in the 2011 NFL Draft. In fact, those teams play a very important role in the Chiefs’ draft since the Chiefs don’t pick in the top 5 this year. Who the 20 teams before us pick can have a significant impact on who we draft. So, for those wondering why I don’t think AJ Green or Julio Jones will be there for us at 21, take a look at one way I see the first round of the Draft going.

You may remember a couple of weeks ago we told you that the NFL ruled in favor of the Chiefs when the team filed a tampering charge against the Detroit Lions. While the details of what exactly the Lions did never were revealed, the NFL levied a minor punishment against Detroit. The Lions had to swap 5th round draft picks with the Chiefs, moving KC up and Detroit down, as well as forfeit their 2011 seventh round pick.

Now ESPN.com is reporting that the NFL has given those tampering Lions back their 2011 seventh rounder and will instead strip them of their 2012 seventh rounder.

The Lions appealed the ruling, and in what I guess we should call a semi-victory, the NFL instead will take away their No. 7 pick in 2012. Some of you will ask what difference that makes. In theory, a future draft pick is less valuable than a current one because the team gets the potential benefit of an additional player for the upcoming season.

The previously-enforced swap in the fifth round, which left the Lions picking at No. 154 overall instead of No. 140, remains intact.

Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have won a tampering charge against the Detroit Lions. As a result of the ruling by the NFL, the Chiefs and Lions will switch 5th round picks and Detroit will be stripped of it’s 7th round pick.

It is not clear exactly what the charge entailed, however it likely stems from some comments made by former KC defensive coordinator and head coach Gunther Cunningham.

As the Chiefs continued to cut many dead weight players picked up during the Herm Edwards/Gunther Cunningham era, Gun, who had landed in Detroit mentioned that he wouldn’t mind picking up some of his former players if the Chiefs should continue to cut them.

“[Kansas City] keeps wanting to dump their players,” Cunningham said in February 2010. “I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys.”

Guuuuuuntheeeeeeeer!!!

This has to do with Gunther Cunningham, who said last year that he’d like to catch some of KC’s players if the team were to keep dumping them.

That comment isn’t necessarily tampering because Gun didn’t single out any player by name but it could allude that some shady business went on behind the scenes and that Don Pioli found out about it and now had a hit out on the Lions.

What is tampering? Basically if a player is under contract with the Chiefs, until he is no longer in the Chiefs’ employ, he cannot be contacted in any way, shape or form by any representative from another team about possible employment.

If the Lions are given cement shows and dropped in the East River by Don Pioli found guilty by the NFL, they could lose some draft picks.

Let that be a lesson to the rest of the NFL. Never. Mess. With. The. Family.

Then the NFL rule book got involved.

Calvin Johnson grasped a 25-yard pass in the end zone from Shaun Hill, got both feet down, went down to the ground with the ball in one hand, landed on his side, got another hand down on the ground and finally released the ball from his other hand as the ball hit the ground. Apparently “the process” wasn’t completed; incomplete pass.

From SideLion Report, Fansided’s Lions blog.

I know this isn’t Chiefs related but I am sure you, like me, saw the ridiculous call in the Lions/Bears game. The Lions were robbed of a victory because of a technicality. It was an awful call. What do you guys think?

The Detroit Lions have been given the honor of selecting this years Mr. Irrelevant. Each year, the final pick of the Draft is bestowed the honor of being Mr. Irrelevant. Here is more from Wiki:

The name arose in 1976, when former Southern California and NFL receiver Paul Salata founded “Irrelevant Week” in Newport Beach, California. Salata announces the final draft pick during the NFL draft. During the summer after the NFL draft, the new Mr. Irrelevant and his family are invited to spend a week in Newport, where they enjoy a golf tournament, a regatta, a roast giving advice to the new draftee, and a ceremony awarding him the Lowsman Trophy. The trophy mimics the Heisman, but depicts a player fumbling a football.

The first Mr. Irrelevant was Kelvin Kirk, picked number 487 of the 1976 draft. The current Mr. Irrelevant is kicker Ryan Succop of the University of South Carolina, pick number 256 of the 2009 draft. He was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last year, Kansas City Chiefs kicker, Ryan Succop was the final pick in the draft. Succop quickly went from Irrelevant to relevant by having an excellent rookie season. He made 25 of 29 FG tries and went 29 of 29 in PAT attempts to chip in 104 points to the Chiefs side of the scoreboard.

The Lions only need to look to the Chiefs and their success with Succop to be reminded that every pick in the NFL Draft can be relevant.

Sure enough, that is who they took. Could the Chiefs pick be leaked again this year?

With just 11 days and a few hours until the Draft, the Chiefs intentions still remain unclear. The same can not be said for the 4 teams picking in front of them. While anything can happen, it seems very likely the Rams will take Bradford, the Lions draft Suh, the Bucs get McCoy and Washington will pick Okung.

This scenario would leave the Eric Berry, safety out of Tennessee there for the Chiefs to snatch. While Betty is a favorite choice for many around AA and Chiefs Nation in general, there has been much speculation that Scott Pioli will avoid taking a safety as high as #5. If he does indeed pass on Berry, pundits are speculating that KC wil go the “safe route” by taking one of the top offensive tackles.

While OT is a possible pick for the Chiefs in the first round, I keep thinking back to something Scott Pioli said at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Q: Will offensive line be a priority for you in the draft this year as you try and help Cassel?

PIOLI: “I don’t know if it’s a priority but it’s certainly something we need to get better at, there’s no doubt. Everyone saw us play. When you win four games, it’s offensive line and there are some other positions. We’ve got some good players on the offensive line and we need to get more good players on the offensive line – just like we need to get more good players on the defensive line and at linebacker. This is an easy question to answer because unfortunately, when you win four games you’ve got to do a lot of things better. Like I said, I have to do a better job, the coaches have to do a better job and the players have to do a better job.”

After Pioli said this, he added Casey Weigmann to compete at C and Ryan Lilja at G. Lilja will almost certainly be a starter. Taking another lineman in the first round, whether it be a LT or a RT, would in my opinion, be making the offensive line a priority. I think that the Chiefs were encouraged by Branden Albet’s improved play last season in the 2nd half of the year. I also think they were pleased how Ryan O’Callahan settled in as a starter at RT. With Lilja taking a starting G spot and Brian Waters still being Brian Waters, center remains the only serious weakness on the team.

You don’t take a center in the first round.

So was Scott Pioli bluffing? Does he not consider adding 2 to 3 starters along the offensive line making it a priority? Pioli may want to take a safe pick but is he willing to reach for a position he feels is safe, like ILB?

We likely won’t find out until April 22nd. So stay tuned because AA will be there when it happens.

You may remember yesterday we posted a link quoting former Chiefs defensive coordinator, Gunther Cunningham. In the quote, Gun mentioned that there were several players on the Chiefs defense that may be cut and that he would like to pick them up if that happened. The quote has raised some eyebrows around the net and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is crying foul.

On cue, Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has dipped a toe into the tampering pool.

As Rosenthal pointed out, the former Chiefs defensive coordinator recently said, “[Kansas City] keeps wanting to dump their players. I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys.”

Though Cunningham mentioned no specific players, we believe that he has committed a textbook violation of the tampering rules by expressing general interest in multiple players under contract with another team.

Florio goes on to say that agents of Chiefs players who are going to become free agents will be able to use Gun’s comments as leverage to get their players bigger contracts.

“We’ll just go to Detroit,” an agent might say. “Cunningham has said he wants some of his old guys.”

What do you think, Addicts? Is “Don Pioli” going to have to have Gunther whacked?

“They keep wanting to dump players,” defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said late last season. “I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys.”

Cunningham was the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator in 2004-08. Toward the end of his tenure, he bemoaned coaching so many young players as the Chiefs struggled.

But now some of those young players are older, and they might be available because they don’t fit the new defensive system the Chiefs introduced.

“Some of those young kids I coached, I really believed they were going to be good players, and I know I’m right about that,” Cunningham said. “Now what’s happened there is the same thing in any organization. A new guy comes in, and they decide to go to the 3-4 defense when the structure of the personnel was built for the 4-3.”

If you previously believed Gunther Cunningham hadn’t yet lost his marbles, then this piece of news might make change your mind. The Detroit Lions have signed defensive end Eric Hicks. Yeah, that Eric Hicks. You know, the one who’s been out of football since 2007 when he played sparingly for the Jets. You know, the guy who stunk it up in the Vermeil era. Yeah, that Eric Hicks is going to the worst defense in the NFL.

From Detroit Free Press:

The Lions also released two wide receivers: Travis Taylor and Steve Sanders. They signed defensive end Eric Hicks, who played under Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham in Kansas City.

Hicks made the Chiefs’ roster as an undrafted rookie out of Maryland in 1998, when Cunningham was the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator. He spent nine years in Kansas City. Cunningham was the Chiefs’ head coach in 1999-2000 and their defensive coordinator from 2004-07. Hicks spent 2007 with the New York Jets and didn’t play in the NFL last year.

What else can we really say about this one? It’s not often that an over-the-hill defensive coordinator goes to the league’s worst defense and imports one of his old hasbeen defenders who’s been out of the game for a year. Anyone doubt the decision to let ol’ Gun walk now?

Today we take you back to the Plaza where notable psychiatrist Sigmund Fraud is about to have his exit session with one of favorite patients — the one and only Gunther Cunningham.

Fraud: “Good morning, Gunther. How have you been? I have not seen you since the debacle in the Queen City!”

Gunther: “Its been tough. Real damn tough. The players. The f***ing players. They just quit on our trip to Cincy. Then they fired the King. Then Herm. I knew my ass was the next to go.”

Fraud: “I see. Please, please continue”

Gunther: “You see, dammit, I thought I had lost my touch. Like I said during our last session, I just didn’t know what to do to motivate these players. After all our draft picks on defense and we finished 29th in f***ing defense. Sh**, I was depressed.”

Fraud: “Tell me more.”

Gunther: “Well, one night I had this dream. I was coaching a team of silver and blue and, believe it or not, we were in the Super Bowl. I had gotten the old gang together for one last run. Donnie on the outside and Marvcus Patton in the middle. Dale Carter and James Hasty at the corners. Neil Smith even slimmed his fat f***ing ass down to play end for me. All we were missing was D.T. We were awesome. I woke up from that dream and got a call from the Lions owner, Mr. Ford. He asked me to move to Detroit and become their defensive coordinator.”

Fraud: “I see. And how did that make you feel?”

Gunther:”Hell, speechless at first. I accepted knowing I couldn’t do any worse of a job in Detroit than Matt Millen’s crew and the Big 3 had done during the last several years. Later, I came to my senses and realized that DETROIT WAS DEAD F***ING LAST IN THE F***ING LEAGUE IN F***ING DEFENSE! Behind even the Chiefs. I went to Mr. Ford’s office ready to turn in my resignation papers. His response: ‘Gunther, don’t worry so much. You can only go one way — up. Besides, there is talk of a bailout with additional draft picks being allocated to Detroit.’ I was pretty upset when I went in there, but that meeting calmed me down. I mean, those dumb bastards went 0-16 last year. I had to coach with Herm f***ing Edwards and still managed to get two wins.”

Fraud: “Yes, Yes Tell me more.”

Gunther:”I got excited. Burned those damn Cover 2 playbooks of Herm’s — that sh** isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on…I told him…you gotta f***ing blitz — then I began calling all the old gang. First, I asked Donnie to play for me for a fourth time. He’s about as damn old as me, but I truly do love that son of a bitch. He said yes. Then Marvcus, Dale, James and Neil. They were all in. Hell, I even got Andre Rison to play for me again. I figured even he could afford a house in Detroit. If it gets burned down that’s his own damn — ”

Fraud: “But, Gunther, wait…what are you going to do if you run in to trouble in Detroit? After all, their winningest coach was WAYNE FONTES!!”

Gunther: “I thought about that, too. But then I remembered something that brought me piece of mind. I can always get a job replacing GREG ROBINSON somewhere.”

Fraud: “Ah-ha! An old patient of mine. Funny. I could never quite fix that one.”

Update 11:45 PM: PFT doesn’t think this is a done deal at all.

Our good friends over at Arrowhead Pride are reporting, via KFFL, that the Lions will select Jason Smith first overall in next month’s NFL Draft. From KFFL:

Lions | To take J. Smith with first pick?
Sun, 22 Mar 2009 18:38:30 -0700

KFFL has learned the Detroit Lions will take Baylor OT Jason Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

If this is true, my guess is that the Lions are going the cheap route. After all, the Ford family can’t exactly throw around the cash it used to. Meanwhile, Smith probably settled on a much smaller deal than either Aaron Curry or Matt Stafford would have in order to be the No. 1 overall pick. And why not? After all, houses in Detroit are going for a used waffle maker and a bagful of Camel points.

What does this mean for the Chiefs? Curry? Maybe. It could also increase the likelihood of a trade down, as teams more than likely are going to be interested in trading up for Matt Stafford. Remember, the first quarterback went at No. 3 last year. It does look almost for certain that both Curry and Michael Crabtree will be on the board when our Chiefs pick, not to mention Brian Orakpo and Everette Brown as well. So, let the debate rage on…

If the first two picks are indeed Smith and Eugene Monroe, who should the Chiefs select third?

According to Tom Kowalski of MLive.com (via TWFE.com), the Detroit Lions are already negotiating a contract with the soon-to-be No. 1 pick.

The talks are only preliminary and the real target has yet to be identified, but the Detroit Lions are already in the process of negotiating a contract with their first-round draft pick. Lions president Tom Lewand said the team could move very quickly in getting a deal done, adding that “By the rules, we could agree to terms with somebody tomorrow if we wanted to.”

If we get the news that Aaron Curry or Matt Stafford will be the Lions’ pick this far out, that will really change the speculation game quite a bit as far as the Chiefs are concerned. I think it’s one of those two guys, but don’t rule out Jason Smith either. Maybe they like several guys and the actual pick will depend on who is willing to sign the cheapest deal? Stay tuned, as this could be huge news…

After all the reports that the Chiefs were blocking the Lions yesterday, Gunther Cunningham is now the Lions defensive coordinator. I guess coaching for an 0-16 team beats getting fired by a 2-14 one, albeit by the slimmest of margins. I’m not sure what Jim Schwartz and Co. saw in Gun’s 2008 coaching performance to bring him on, but that’s their problem.

Gunther was great during his first run as D.C., but never quite recaptured the magic during his second stint. In fact, we might as well have kept Greg Robinson on board. Old Gun’s defense became a National punchline this year after losing star defensive end Jared Allen, registering an all-time NFL low 10 sacks. Thanks for all the good times, Gunther, but like Herman Edwards you’ve more than worn out your welcome.

Speaking of Harm, when your D.C. jumps ship without getting fired that is never a good sign.

From The Kansas City Star:

Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham took the same job today with the Detroit Lions.

He is the third Chiefs assistant coach to flee since the end of the season, joining secondary coach David Gibbs and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer. Gibbs went to Houston, Priefer to Denver.

Detroit’s new head coach, Jim Schwartz, and Cunningham worked together with the Tennessee Titans during the three seasons between the time Cunningham was fired as Chiefs head coach and rehired as their defensive coordinator.

Addicts, sound of on Gunther Cunningham’s departure…

After having posted the second worst defense in the league (second overall in most yards per game and fourth most points allowed) the Chiefs are holding Gunther hostage. My question to the Chiefs is, WHY?

Why would we not want Gunther to move onto greener pastures, like Detroit. The best thing about him taking another job is that we wouldn’t have to fire him. I thought the Lions would be doing us a favor to steal the “Gun” Show away from us. I know Scott Pioli is evaluating his entire staff and taking his time, but I think he needs to revaluate this decision.

10 Reasons Why the Lions are More Pathetic Than We are:

10. 10 wins? 50 TDs? Jon Kitna isn’t exactly Nostradamus, is he?

9. Our coach may be goofy, too, but at least his name doesn’t sound like pasta sauce.

8. You know, as highly touted as Mike Martz is, his results haven’t been any better than Mike Solari‘s.

7. I thought our secondary was prone to getting burned. Damn. Even washed-up Donovan McNabb looked like a pro bowler against the Lions this season. (and even in those god awful dandelion and baby blue unis)

6. Kevin Jones isn’t exactly Barry Sanders, is he. His back up, T.J. Duckett, actually looks like he’s spent more time trying to be like Sanders. Colonel Sanders, that is.

5. No matter how bad Dick Curl and Mike Prifer have been, at least they don’t drive through fast food joints butt-ass naked.

4. Charles Rogers. Mike Williams. Man, I thought we were bad at this draft thing.

3. As much as Chiefs fans loathe King Carl right now, not one of them would trade him for Mat Millen.

2. Shaun Rogers looks like the black Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

1. God’s Team? More like Fraud Team. Might want to make sure that relationship is reciprocal next time, Kitna. I think the Big Fella is actually more fond of guys like Peyton and Tom than you and Kurt.

Tony Moss of the Detroit Free Press predicts that the Lions will “crush” the Chiefs this weekend…

The Lions are very much in free fall, though if you go back and look at their last five losses, it’s hard to find anything truly shameful. Three of those defeats came to division winners Green Bay, Dallas, and San Diego, and the other two were to probable playoff participants the Giants and Minnesota. Detroit isn’t quite there yet in terms of being a contender, but it does have some talent and is capable of knocking out an inferior opponent like the Chiefs. Kansas City has been far less competitive than Detroit over the past two months, and there’s no logical reason to expect them to suddenly put forth an inspired effort this week.

Unfortunately, I think I agree with him. Actually, if Brodie Croyle plays well in a shootout loss it will be more like fortunately. The Chiefs’ eyes might be on finally nabbing an elusive win, but the fans are looking to improve the team’s draft status.

(hat tip: Tony’s Kansas City)
