They may have Peyton Manning but they are covered in bird droppings.

The fans at Sports Authority Field or Mile High or whatever the hell they call that place now are not having a very pleasant game-day experience.

According to a recent article by Todd Walker of KUSA TV in Denver, Broncos fans have been getting crapped on for years.

“I found out a pigeon had pooped on the back of my shirt,” Broncos fan Allison Harden told Walker. “These are $250 seats. (We’re) sitting there trapped in this kind of a situation. Any moment a pigeon (will) poop on you.”

Andy Gorchov, General Manager of Stadium Management Company, wanted fans to know that they were doing everything they can to rectify the problem, releasing the below statement:

“We strive to ensure that all fans have a positive experience during Broncos games, and their safety and comfort is our No. 1 priority. Unfortunately, outdoor stadiums do sometimes have issues with birds.”

“When these circumstances occur, our stadium staff is instructed to respond immediately and resolve the situation in the most timely and appropriate manner possible. We encourage all guests to contact us if they have an unpleasant experience at our stadium to allow us to provide the absolute highest level of service to them.”

Apparently responding to the situation in the most appropriate manner possible involves plastic owls.

“There’s actually a plastic owl,” Allison’s husband Jeff said. “I’m sure they set that up there at one point to deter the pigeons. It’s obviously not working. It’s a health issue. There’s people with drinks. There’s open food containers.”

I think I can speak for all Chiefs fans when I say, this is hilarious.

The first week of the 2012 NFL season is in the books and the AFC West race is now starting to take shape.

The West is a very different division than it was in 2011. Tim Tebow is gone. Carson Palmer will have his first full year at QB for the Raiders. The Chiefs have a multitude of new faces, as do the Chargers.

Let’s take a quick look at the standings and see how each team fared in Week 1.

Denver Broncos 1-0
San Diego Chargers 1-0
Kansas City Chiefs 0-1
Oakland Raiders 0-1

The Broncos and Chargers jump out to an early lead. The Raiders took the biggest blow of opening week because their loss came against a division rival, which could come back to haunt them in a tie-breaker later.

The Chiefs got walloped by injuries and the Atlanta offense. The only good thing to come out of the weekend for KC was that their first loss was to an NFC team.

The Broncos looked pretty good on both sides of the ball. Peyton Manning looked more than capable of running the offense and Dennver’s defense did a nice job of closing the deal, though their secondary struggled to stop the Steelers on third and long.

The Chargers handled the Raiders on Monday Night Football, 22-14. The SD offense had some trouble finding the endzone but kicker Nate Kaeding kept them ahead by nailing all five of his field goal attempts.

The Raiders struggled to get things going on offense. Oakland fumbled the ball four times, losing only one.

Next week in the AFC West:

-The Chiefs will travel to Buffalo to take on the 0-1 Bills.

-The Chargers will host the 0-1 Titans.

-The Broncos will travel to Atlanta to take on the 1-0 Falcons on Monday Night Football.

-The Raiders will travel to Miami to take on the 0-1 Dolphins.

How do you think this week will shake out in the AFC West?

As fans of the NFL look ahead to the 2012 NFL season, two teams have emerged as the early favorites in the AFC West; the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. It’s not hard to figure out why Denver is seen as a favorite. They are the defending division champs and they added one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in free agency. So naturally, they’ll win the division, right? Well, not so fast my friends.

Many “experts” are starting to realize that the Kansas City Chiefs were a blocked FG away from winning the division, despite the fact that Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry, and Tony Moeaki were out for the year, they fired their coach mid-season, and started Tyler Freaking Palko for four games. The only thing holding people back from loving the Chiefs is that people don’t have a lot of faith in Matt Cassel.

It makes for an interesting test of how teams can best win games in the NFL. KC is seen as a team with a stacked overall roster, but without the caliber of a QB that one usually needs to go far in the playoffs. Denver is seen as a team with some holes in their roster, but has one of the best QBs to ever play the game.

In fact, I can make a case that if you look at all the other areas of these teams, there might not be a single other position group that Denver has an edge over KC in other then QB. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look.

Running Backs:
Denver – Willis McGahee, Ronnie Hilman, Knowshon Moreno
KC – Jamaal Charles, Peyton Hillis, Cyrus Gray

If Jamaal Charles is 100 percent back, then this is a hands down win for KC. If Charles is only say 80 percent of what he was, then it is closer, but I still like the idea of Peyton Hillis running to prove last year was a fluke and he’s still a premier NFL RB.

Wide Receivers:
Denver – Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Andre Caldwell, Brandon Stokely, Matt Willis
KC – Dwayne Bowe, Jonathan Baldwin, Steve Breaston, Dexter McCluster, Devon Wylie

Now, if we’re talking which group will end up with better numbers this coming season, the safe bet is the Denver crew, but that has more to do with who will be throwing them the ball and how much the offenses throw the ball in general. If you’re just talking about the ability of the WRs themselves, I think you have to give the edge to KC, mainly because they have the only proven elite level WR in Bowe. The Denver WR core is solid, but with an elite QB, the KC group would be scary.

Tight Ends:
Denver – Jacob Tamme, Joel Dreessen, Virgil Green
KC – Tony Moeaki, Kevin Boss, Jake O’Connell

In the pass catching department, this one is pretty much even. Tamme had a 60+ catch year with Manning in Indy and Dreesen caught six TDs last season in Houston. However, Moeaki and Boss are both much better blockers then Tamme and Dreesen so that puts the edge, once again, in KC’s favor.

Offensive Line:
Denver – Ryan Clady, Chris Kuper, JD Walton, Zane Beadles, Orlando Franklin
KC – Branden Albert, Ryan Lilja, Rodney Hudson, Jon Asamoah, Eric Winston

This is a hard one for me. Clady looked like the best up and coming tackle in the NFL as a rookie but has slipped a little since, while Albert continues to be a solid and more consistent player. Winston is better than Franklin, period. Kuper, assuming he comes back healthy, is probably the best guard between the teams but Asamoah isn’t far behind him. Beadles has some upside, but Lilja is much more experienced. Walton has playing experience, but didn’t look that good while Hudson has yet to play a snap at center in the NFL. I think Denver fans may argue it’s a tie, but I think the clear gap between Winston and Franklin gives KC the edge.

Defensive Line:
Denver – Elvis Dumervil, Robert Ayers, Justin Bannan, Derek Wolfe, Ty Warren
KC – Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, Dontari Poe, Allen Bailey, Amon Gordon

This is another one that is so hard to judge because of the different schemes that the two teams run. I think it’s clear that the Denver group is far better at rushing the passer and the KC group is far better at stopping the run. Dumervil is the best player on this list, but it’s hard for me to say the Denver DL is better when I have serious questions on their ability to stop the run. If Dontari Poe comes in and impresses from day one he could tip the scales in KC’s favor, but for now I’ll call it a tie.

Linebackers:
Denver – Von Miller, Joe Mays, Wesley Woodyard, Nate Irving, (DJ Williams suspended)
KC – Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Justin Houston, Jovan Belcher

Chiefs and Broncos fans could argue all day about who is better between Miller and Hali, but what isn’t debatable is that with DJ Williams already suspended six games for an illegal substance and more games likely being added to it for a second DUI arrest, the Broncos don’t have anybody else at LB that stacks up with Derrick Johnson. Furthermore, I would say that Justin Houston has shown more upside than any of the other LBs on Denver’s roster as well. Despite Denver having the amazing Von Miller, KC takes this one as well.

Cornerbacks:
Denver – Champ Bailey, Drayton Florence, Tracy Porter, Syd’Quan Thompson, Omar Bolden
KC – Brandon Flowers, Stanford Routt, Javier Arenas, Travis Daniels, Jalil Brown

Well, between Bailey and Florence the Broncos have about 150 years of NFL experience. The question is whether or not their old man bodies hold up. If Denver has a hidden fountain of youth in their locker room, then this could actually be a win for Denver. However, I think if you asked the other 30 NFL GMs which of these CBs they would like at this point of their careers, they would all pick Brandon Flowers. I’ll give Denver the edge in experience but KC the edge in athleticism and call it a tie, but with an asterisk that if Bailey falls off drastically, it swings to the Chiefs.

Safeties:
Denver – Mike Adams, Quinton Carter, David Burton, Rahim Moore
KC – Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis, Abram Elam, DeQuan Menzie

Eric Berry. Chiefs win.

Special Teams:
Denver – Matt Prater, Britton Colquitt
KC – Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt

This is probably the one area where Denver is the clear winner. They were better in both kick return and punt return averages and Britton out-punted his brother last season. Prater and Succop put up pretty similar numbers last year. This one belongs to Denver.

So in summery, Denver has a much better quarterback and better special teams. Everywhere else KC is either better or it’s too close to call. Although I should also probably give credit to Denver for having a better all-around pass rush. The wide spread belief is that today’s NFL is all about the quarterback. This year in the AFC West, the Broncos and Chiefs will put that theory to the test. I for one can’t wait to see how it turns out.

As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason La Canfora of NFL.com is reporting that Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy could be a potential target to land the likely soon to be open offensive coordinator position in Kansas City.

From NFL.com:

The Kansas City Chiefs could pinpoint Denver Broncos Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy as a possible coordinator/coach-in-waiting should they be unable to land Josh McDaniels from St. Louis, sources said. (According to league sources, the Rams would like to retain McDaniels as offensive coordinator to stay with Bradford.) McDaniels would be a candidate in Kansas City if Romeo Crennel is promoted as many expect, and New England coach Bill Belichick also would welcome him back if Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien departs for Penn State or the Kansas City opening himself.

I can buy this. McDaniels might be tough to get. Even if the Rams let him go, the Pats might swipe him away. Then again, if he thinks Scott Pioli plans to make him a head coach once Romeo Crennel retires, if Crennel is named head coach, then KC might be an attractive sport for McDaniels to land.

All of this is interesting but nothing can happen until the Chiefs decide for sure that Crennel is going to be their permanent head coach. I wouldn’t be shocked if we found something out by the end of this week.

Despite losing three in a row to end the season, Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos are the new AFC West Champions.

The Chiefs beat the Broncos 7-3 today but the Chargers beat the Raiders out in Oakland so Denver won the West based on a tie-breaker decided by record against common opponents.

The Broncos may be thrilled to have won the division but they are simply limping into the playoffs. The rest of the NFL has seemed to figure out what the Broncos are doing on offense and Tebow has struggled for the third week in a row. Unless the Denver QB can get the team’s passing game going, it could be a short playoff trip for the Broncos.

Still, the Donkeys won the division fair and square, so congratulations to them.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Kyle Orton beat the Denver Broncos and Tim Tebow 7-3 Sunday.

The Chiefs will likely find themselves wondering what could have been as a win last week against the Oakland Raiders would have meant today’s win delivered the AFC West Championship to Kansas City.

But the Chiefs lost that game to the Raiders in overtime and now the attention of the league turns to Oakland where the Raiders are fighting for their playoff lives against the San Diego Chargers.

The scenario is simple. If the Raiders win, they are the AFC West Champions. If the Raiders lose, Denver wins the AFC West.

But the story today was one of revenge for Kyle Orton and of Romeo Crennel’s 2-1 mark as the Chiefs’ head coach.

The Kansas City Chiefs will try to knock the Denver Broncos out of the playoffs Sunday when they travel to Mile High.

There is plenty to talk about in regards to this game so I sat down with Kim Constantinesco of Predominately Orange, FanSided’s Denver Broncos site. Kim has been running PO for a while now and it is the best Broncos site out there.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Let’s go Inside the Enemy Camp with Predominately Orange.

Obviously Tebow is a great leader and winner and all that. He’s a difference maker. But do you think he can develop into a strong enough passing QB to lead the Broncos to a Super Bowl?

The lockout hurt Tebow as much if not more than anyone last off season. It’s clear that his mechanics (from throwing motion to going through his reads quicker) need work and that’s where the OTA’s really come into play. After the season is over, John Elway has promised that he will turn his cap backwards so to speak and hit the practice field with Tebow.

As far as leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl, it doesn’t have to happen with just his arm. In the last 20 years, 76 passers have thrown for 4,000+ yards, yet only 3 have won Super Bowls the same season (Kurt Warner – ’99, Peyton Manning – ’06, and Drew Brees – ’09). That goes to show that balance is key. Once his arm can catch up with his legs and the Broncos can maintain a good rushing attack and a solid defense, I can see the Broncos reaching the Super Bowl with Tebow as their QB.

How awesome is it watching Von Miller? It is such a good pick by the Broncos it makes me sick. Should be fun watching him and Tamba Hali go after the QBs Sunday. Who gets more sacks?

Miller was a phenomenal pick by the Broncos. Unfortunately he will be playing his fourth straight game with a giant cast on his right hand (torn thumb ligaments). He’s been limited in the Broncos last two games with just 2 tackles and zero sacks. Since returning from his injury, he has just 1 sack and 7 tackles. Through his first 11 games he had 10.5 sacks.

I would expect Hali to beat out Miller in Sunday’s sack race. Miller can’t fully grab offensive linemen right now so they are playing him differently. He can’t get under lineman and push them back to win in the leverage game.

Elway is a pretty forthcoming guy where a lot of GMs (particularly Scott Pioli) are pretty tight lipped. Do you like his style?

There isn’t much that Elway can’t get away with in Denver. He led the Broncos to two Super Bowl wins, he runs a great restaurant business, he’s successful in other business ventures, and he keeps a clean image. That’s why he feels like he can fire his words from the hip.

I do like his style. He lets John Fox and Co. do their job and keeps a lower profile than you would expect. There’s a nice balance in the Broncos front office now whereas when Josh McDaniels was in there, he ran the circus, errr, show. GM Brian Xanders didn’t have much say and it was his way or the highway. Elway respects Xanders and Fox so I think it’s a nice working relationship. The drama (if there has been any) has been kept in house which is exactly how it should be.

What would you say Denver’s biggest weakness is that the Chiefs may try to expose?

Denver’s biggest weakness is the pass offense. They’ve struggled mightily with turnovers (7 in the last two weeks) and that’s when they fall dead in the water. Whenever the Broncos don’t turn the ball over, they keep themselves in the game. The Chiefs secondary probably smells blood in the water in that department.

What would you say is Denver’s #1 need heading into the NFL Draft?

Defensive lineman. The Broncos picked up Ty Warren in free agency but he hit the IR before the season started. It seems like the line has been a constant head scratcher after underperforming draft picks, and the team being forced to use backups due to injury.

Your prediction for Sunday?

It’s win and you’re in for the Broncos so I think they will bring their ‘A’ game. They’re at home and fired up for a win after two straight losses.

Broncos – 24

Chiefs – 17

Kyle Orton

This list has to begin with Kyle Orton. The former Broncos QB who got ran out of town by the Tebow-maniacs in Denver will surely be looking to get revenge. Orton will be unlikely to receive a warm welcome Sunday but for once the fans at Mile High will be booing him for being on the other team.

Will Orton crack under the pressure or will he make the entire city of Denver pay? His contract is up after the season so Orton is also auditioning for the rest of the league.

It was a painful Christmas weekend for the Chiefs and their fans. Hope was high when the day began and even later, the best outcome seemed highly possible: everything was falling into place—if only Kansas City could pull out a win at home. But a failed field-goal attempt at the end of regulation meant overtime and ultimately, one big play and a relatively short field goal—and the Chiefs were officially out of the playoffs.

Hard to believe it was 40 years ago.

Wait. What? Which game were you watching?

Yes, one day after the Raiders defeated the Chiefs in overtime, for their fifth straight win at Arrowhead*, I found myself masochistically sitting through another heartbreaking Chiefs loss in overtime. Double overtime.

*The last time that had happened at Arrowhead? It hadn’t.

I’ve written before about my joy in reliving past Chiefs glory that I was not living to enjoy in the first place. On Sunday, I almost too eagerly took the chance to experience some of the pain I wasn’t yet born* to appreciate, either: The NFL Network had cobbled together some never-before-rebroadcast archival footage for an hour-long special commemorating “The Longest Game Ever,” Kansas City’s 1971 division playoff against the Miami Dolphins, which was—spoiler alert!—the longest game ever, lasting well into its second overtime before—double spoiler alert—Kansas City succumbed 27-24 on a Garo Yepremian field goal.

*Though, as I indirectly explained to my daughter, the game plays a role in my being born:

[There is] a story I like to repeat, though I most definitely was not there: On December 25, 1971, [your grandmother] was watching the historic Chiefs-Dolphins divisional playoff, which I’m sure you know is still the longest game in NFL history (that’s why it’s historic!). When the game went into a second overtime, she had to choose whether or not to leave to go on a scheduled date with your grandfather. She went. This started a process—one that, I hope, your own mother will be the one to explain to you in several years—that eventually resulted in me.

In fact, when my father came to pick up my mom, it was the first time he had ever met his future in-laws, who were visiting—and at that moment glued to the TV. They would claim, jokingly—though we were never sure how much so—that they couldn’t remember meeting him that day.

Though it is part of my own family’s lore, I had never known all the little details and dramas of that day—an unseasonably 63-degree Christmas Day, which was seen as an ominous sign against a team from south Florida. The players were somewhat bummed to be playing on Christmas, an NFL first, though Len Dawson reminds viewers that many were just happy to be playing for an extra paycheck in an era when football salaries didn’t always make ends meet (Bobby Bell was working full time for General Motors—being an all-Pro linebacker for the Chiefs was merely his second job).

In the end, it would come down to the kickers. Miami’s Garo Yepremian, who looks not unlike Wallace Shawn as Vizzini in The Princess Bride, was “the smallest man in professional football,” and had spent the previous two years selling his own line of neckties. Jan Stenerud, meanwhile, was “not just a kicker, but also an athlete”—no offense, kickers—who revolutionized the position as the first dominant soccer-style kicker,* and is still the only “pure kicker” voted into the Pro-Football Hall of Fame. In fact, this game featured 15 future Hall-of-Famers (12 on the field, both head coaches, and one beloved owner). Statistically, though, the game belonged to the unlikely Ed Podolak, whose 350 all-purpose yards set an NFL playoff record that still stands.

*Have you seen the straight-ahead style kickers used to use? It’s amazing they ever made a field goal from more than 10 yards away.

However, the game would be most remembered for how the foremost kicker in the league turned into the Lin Elliot of his day, if only for one day. Stenerud missed two field goals, including a potential game-winner near the end of regulation, and had another attempt blocked in overtime. Yepremian also missed, but not twice. Eighty-two minutes and 40 seconds after the game began (according to the game clock), the short, bald former tie-maker unmade this tie with a 37-yard field goal, and the favored Chiefs were out. Inconceivable!

The Kansas City Chiefs and interim coach Romeo Crennel will do everything they can to beat the Denver Broncos Sunday and that means playing their most experienced players.

“Probably, I’m going to go the way it has been because we feel like the guys that we have been playing with basically have given us the best chance to win,” Crennel told reporters yesterday at his weekly press conference. “I don’t know that making a change now will change that.”

Crennel is likely right. With one game to go, while it might be nice to get a look at some of KC’s younger players on the field, they aren’t likely to be the team’s best option if they want to win.

That being said, Crennel isn’t ruling out the possibility that some players might not force their way on to the field based on their performance against the Oakland Raiders.

I would like to open today’s post with a brief statement. This will just take a moment…

I TOLD YOU SO.

Sure, I’m not usually the type of person to say, “I told you so,” precisely because when I make a rare prediction, it usually turns out not to be so. But six weeks ago today, I posted the following:

The Kansas City Chiefs will beat the Green Bay Packers.

That’s right. You read it here first…

The Chiefs will beat the Packers. How do I know this? The same way I am able to evaluate every other question raised during this up-and-down Chiefs season: I have no idea. But they will. And the Packers may very well be 13-0 by the time they visit Arrowhead on December 18… They may even be resting some starters. In any event, I don’t expect the Chiefs will be playing the spoiler in terms of Green Bay’s cruise back to the playoffs. But at least [the Packers] will leave here feeling rotten.

Perhaps you infer from my giddiness that I did not have the most confidence in my own prediction. Like I said, I don’t often get these things right. Clearly, the Kyle Orton Era in Kansas City has indeed lasted more than one minute, and now the discussion is whether it should and/or will last more than one season.

I won’t say I expected Sunday’s shocker, but I felt it was really possible, a gut feeling loosely supported by historical data. I had been thinking back to the Chiefs’ triumph over the then-reigning-champion Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009—a year in which KC only won three other games—which led me to do a little research. I found that, since 1979, the Chiefs had been 6-2 (now 7-2) at home against defending Super Bowl champs. So there.

But I certainly didn’t predict that by the time this game arrived the Chiefs would have lost their starting quarterback and then ditched their head coach—the two major developments that made the difference in this upset. This changes everything. Or, rather, everything has changed. From the first drive forward on Sunday, this felt like a new team (with the same, but improved defense).

I’ll let others continue the discussion about what these new circumstances on the sidelines and behind center might mean for the Chiefs into 2012 and beyond. For now, I just care about next week and the week after that. That’s right. I’m feeling overly optimistic again.*

*It’s sorta, like, my thing.

So I will double down and offer one more “bold” prediction: The Chiefs will win the AFC West.

The Denver Broncos have chosen to officially move on from Kyle Orton and have released the veteran QB earlier today.

Hours after the news broke, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that he is hearing both the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears could be interestied in putting in a claim on Orton.

Glazer’s “report” came in the form of a tweet. While he may actually have a source on this, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is mere guess-work. It doesn’t take a genius, or a source for that matter, to figure out that the two teams who most recently lost their starting QB might be interested in picking up the best QB currently available.

Regardless of where the information comes from, if it is true and the Chiefs and Bears both put in a waiver claim on Orton, the Chiefs would be awarded his services because they have a worse record than Chicago.

Do I think the Chiefs should do it? Find out, after the jump.

“I wish I could say something classy and inspirational, but that just wouldn’t be our style.”

—Shane Falco, The Replacements (2000)

Yes, it’s hard to know what to say right now. It’s been hard to know what to say about these Kansas City Chiefs pretty much since this season or even the preseason started. Last week, we saw the team’s four-game winning streak come to an end and now, apparently, the streak of games-without-season-ending-injuries-to-marquee-players has been halted at six. Of course, it is easy to say how bummed* we all feel on a personal level for quarterback Matt Cassel, who likely will be unable to play football or jazz piano or do needlepoint for the rest of 2011. But how we feel about the prospects of this team with his replacement, Tyler Falco Palko, is harder to articulate.

*”I feel rather bummed for Matt Cassel, on a personal level.” Okay, now you go.

Palko will be making his first NFL start, and it’s a doozy: on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots. No one is really sure what to expect, not even Palko’s own high-school coach, who also happens to be his father: “What are you going to do? I just hope I don’t lose my dinner,” Bob Palko told the Pittsburgh Tribue-Review, when asked about watching his son lead the charge into Foxborough.

So a big part of the storyline—”Cassel Returns to New England”—that likely helped land the Chiefs on national TV for this game in the first place is now gone, but it is being replaced with an equally compelling narrative: The Chance.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their inactives while I was out frantically finishing my grocery shopping so I could spend the rest of the day drinking beer, watching football and recording live radio shows.

The really, REALLY good news is that Quick Draw Jon McGraw and Javier Arenas will play today! That means less Shabby Piscitelli, less Donald Washington and more crying Tim Tebow!

The inactives are the usual suspects with the exception of Williams, who is injured.

Inactives: 13 Stanzi, 53 Williams, 68 Maneri, 83 Urban, 88 Becht, 90 Bair, 95 Powe

Demorrio isn’t really a loss because he generally only plays on special teams. Actually, come to think of it, him being out might be a plus considering all he usually does on special teams is get called for stupid penalties.

Powe and Stanzi are evidently not as valuable as Shabby and Donnie Washington. Cause you know, if something happens to Matt Cassel and Tyler Palko, Shabby can definitely step in and play QB.

See ya at the live game chat in about 45 minutes. I gotta set my fantasy team.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to join the Oakland Raiders in first place in the AFC West today when the Denver Broncos come to Arrowhead Stadium.

The Arrowhead Addict staff is going on the record with our predictions for today’s game. Let’s do it.

Patrick Allen

I am still so disgusted with KC’s performance vs. the Dolphins that I am almost tempted to pick the Broncos in this game. I feel wronged, you see? I picked the Chiefs to win by a lot on Sunday and instead they lost by a lot. To the Dolphins.

Still, the Chiefs have been dead and buried before and have been able to come back from it. It may not be pretty but I’ll be damned if I’ll pick Tim Tebow to win at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs 16, Broncos 14

These lovely ladies above have some advice for you about today’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos.

I think they do anyway. When the one on the left was talking I was distracted and I couldn’t understand a damn word the one on the right said.

Anyway, if you are looking for some fantasy football advice about the players in today’s game you’ve come to the wrong place. Last week I tried to give some advice for the Chiefs, Dolphins game and it all turned out to be awful. I suggested starting the Chiefs defense and I think I might have even suggested using Matt Cassel if you were in a tight spot.

Actually, maybe I am really good at this. Just do the OPPOSITE of whatever I say. After the jump.

The Denver Broncos will be coming to Arrowhead Stadium Sunday to face the Kansas City Chiefs in a crucial divisional matchup. Arrowhead is traditionally a difficult place for opposing QBs to play* so Tim Tebow could have his hands full on Sunday.

*Unless of course you are Matt Moore and a winless Dolphins team. Still. Bitter.

Then again, as Kim Constantinesco from Predominately Orange, FanSided’s Denver Broncos site tells us in a recent article, Tebow has been solid on the road.

The Broncos’ offense is the hot topic of conversation lately. Something that isn’t quite at the forefront is Tebow’s ability to thrive on the road.

We all know that Tebow picks up the pace and his game as the clock winds down. He plays best with his back up against the wall. The fear and the hatred of losing trumps all in his book.

Perhaps that’s why Tebow plays so well in somebody else’s stadium. He has 7 career touchdowns and 0 turnovers in his 128 touches on the road.

From predominantlyorange.com (share this quote)

Hopefully the Arrowhead crowd will be able to capture a little bit of their Halloween night swagger this weekend to make things more difficult on Tebow. The KC faithful appear to be up to the task when the team is playing in prime time but the Sunday to Sunday wall of sound seems to be a bit lacking.

What do you think, Addicts? Will the Chiefs snap Tebow’s streak of impressive road performances? Or will he stick a dagger into the heart of the Chiefs’ playoff hopes?

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to get their season back on track this Sunday when Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos come to town. As much as the Broncos have struggled this season they have, like the Chiefs, pulled themselves back into the division race.

Kansas City got carved up a week ago by Matt Moore so they shouldn’t be taking any NFL offense lightly these days, particularly one as unpredictable as Denver’s. Chiefs coach Todd Haley told reporters today that KC’s defense always starts with a focus on stopping the run.

“Our defensive philosophy regardless of who we are playing, is we’ve got to stop the run first. If we don’t stop the run then we’ll probably have a problem against anybody we play and Denver’s no different, and they happen to be running the ball really well right now so defensively we must do a good job against the run. They’ve got a number of guys including the quarter back that run it well, and at the same time we’ve got to be able to defend that pass but that doesn’t change week in and week out.”

More after the jump.

The Sporting News conducted a poll of 111 players from 31 teams and a whopping 22 of those 111 players answered “Tim Tebow” when they were asked who the most overrated player in the league was.

Tony Romo came in a close second. Mark Sanchez was third.

In a recent and unofficial Arrowhead Addict poll that never happened but probably should have, Tim Tebow was voted “Biggest Tool.”

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to rebound from their third humiliating loss of the NFL season at the hands of the Miami Dolphins when Tim Tebow and the Broncos come to town.

The 2011 Chiefs have shown to be extremely resilient but also prone to horrendous meltdowns.

Here are five players that can help KC get back on track Sunday vs. the Broncos.

Tamba Hali

Hali got shut down by the Dolphins last week and for the Chiefs to be successful on defense that simply can’t happen. Hali is getting double-teamed constantly and he isn’t getting any help from the team’s other pass rushers. While that may not be fair, Hali is a franchise guy and his job is to be great no matter what.

Hali must return to form Sunday or the Chiefs will continue to get carved up by opposing QB’s…even Tim Tebow.

Apparently, the Chiefs don’t do so well against AFC East opponents at home in 2011. That is one thing we did learn this weekend. Not only did the winless Miami Dolphins’ streak of, you know, being winless come to an emphatic end with a 31-3 exorcism at Arrowhead, but a couple of other streaks fizzled out on Sunday, too, starting with K.C.’s own recent undefeated stretch. So it looks like there will be no unprecedented 13-3 season after an 0-3 start, no 16-game run to a Super Bowl title. Oh well.

Perhaps, too, this marks the conclusion of Head Coach Todd Haley’s days as a bedraggled, unwashed sideline hobo. “I want to take my hat off to Miami,” he said after the game, effectively announcing an end to the streak in which he has worn the same streaked cap since the autumnal equinox.

But what’s weird, or not so weird, is that—other than dropping the Chiefs back to 4-4 for the first half of the season (and, hey, who saw even that as a strong possibility back in mid-September?)—the unfortunate events of November 6, 2011, tell us almost nothing about what is coming next for this team in the second half of the season.

Will these Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos at home this Sunday? I have no idea. Probably? Maybe not?

Will these Chiefs win the AFC West? I have no idea. Maybe? Probably not? It is possible. Of course it’s possible. They are currently in a three-way tie for first, and as rough as their second half looks, the road facing each of their divisional compatriots looks just as tough. This team could still end up 6-10 or 8-8 or even 9-7, but which nine? Which seven?

So, at the midway point, I might as well make one semi-bold prediction:

The Kansas City Chiefs will beat the Green Bay Packers.

That’s right. You read it here first. Unless, of course, you’d already read it somewhere else, and that’s okay, too.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have got their backsides handed to them by the winless Miami Dolphins today but the Tim Tebow led Broncos beat Carson Palmer and the Raiders and the Packers defeated the Chargers.

And that means the Chiefs are still in first place in the AFC West.

If you were looking for a silver lining, there it is.

The Raiders, Chiefs and Chargers now all stand at 4-4, while the Broncos move to 3-5.

Sure, the Chiefs missed a golden opportunity to seize sole control of first place but important thing is that the AFC West race is still wide open. Eventually, one team is going to step up and take it. After everything I’ve seen so fat this season from the AFC West teams, I’d say the Chiefs have just as good a shot at it as anyone else.

Today sucked but this thing ain’t over Addicts. Not by a long shot.

If you have been following my writing for the last couple of weeks, here and here, you probably started to notice a trend. Both of those articles were about Todd Haley in some form or fashion. I guess you could say I have developed a man crush on the non-shaving, sweaty hat wearing, Chiefs head coach. However, after four straight wins, which established a tie for first place in the AFC West, these next two games could be the biggest of the season for Haley and the Chiefs.

This weekend, the Miami Dolphins pay a visit to Arrowhead Stadium. The following weekend is divisional game against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead. While Denver does not appear to be a threat, divisional rivalries rarely play out the way they are supposed to. These next two home games will go a long way in determining the Chiefs success in 2011, and will truly show how well Todd Haley is at motivating his players.

The St. Louis Rams acquired pro bowl WR Brandon Lloyd from the Denver Broncos for a 6th round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortenson.

I have to say, John Elway is a genius. If only he’d hire Josh McDaniels back as head coach he might just drive the Broncos straight into the ground.

Seriously though, I guess if that was the only offer the Broncos were going to get for Lloyd and they really had no intention of re-signing him, it is better to get something than nothing.

According to Mort, the pick could become a 5th rounder depending on how Lloyd performs with his new team.

Damn, what a great move for the Rams. The Chiefs don’t even really need a receiver and I still would have been ok with it if they got Lloyd for a 6th/conditional 5th. Hell, I’d even throw in Shabby Piscitelli free of charge.=)

What do you guys think? Is Elway a genius or an idiot?

The details of the trade are not yet known.

Lloyd will now be reunited with Josh McDaniels, who was the head coach of the Broncos when Lloyd had his breakout season in 2010.

This puts new starter Tim Tebow in an interesting position as he will now roll with a talented but young group of wide receivers in his first start this weekend. Should be interesting.

We’ll update you on the trade details if and when we get them.

Update: La Canfora is reporting the trade has been agreed to but the two sides are hammering out the last details. It should be completed soon he reports.

The Denver Broncos have placed Pro Bowl WR Brandon Llyod on trading block, according to ESPN.com. The Broncos are apparently asking for a third, fourth or fifth round pick for Llyod.

I guess the Broncos are in full rebuild mode. Obviously, they would need to start that process by getting rid of all their good players.

Tim Tebow is set to make his first start after the bye week. The trade deadline is Tuesday so if Lloyd is dealt, the chosen one will begin his career as the Broncos starter without the team’s top target.

Maybe the Donkeys are trying to Suck for Luck?

I know some of you are wondering if the Chiefs would make a play for Lloyd. I doubt it. For one, trades between division rivals, while they do happen, are pretty rare. For two, the Chiefs don’t really need Lloyd that badly. They already have Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin. Although Baldwin hasn’t played yet, he is still a first round pick. Don’t see the Chiefs making a play here.

I’m not much of an NBA fan*, so upon hearing the latest news of that league’s lockout—Commissioner David Stern has cancelled the first two weeks of the NBA season—all I could think was this: Ah, if only those first two weeks of the NFL season had never happened! The Chiefs would now be 2-1, the only blemish a loss at San Diego (expected) by the score of 20-17 (quite closer than expected). The team would still have a healthy Eric Berry and Jamaal Charles (assuming they wouldn’t have been injured in Weeks Three, Four, or Five). And Todd Haley would probably not be desperate enough to pledge to go unshaven (and to continue wearing velour hoodies and dirty sweat pants) so long as the Chiefs keep winning.

*I don’t know—watching monster-sized millionaires smash into each other on a football field doesn’t seem nearly as ridiculous as watching full-grown multi-millionaires scurry around in shorts on a squeaky court.

It’s so hard to analyze this team right now. The Chiefs seem both better and worse than their 2-3 record. Over the course of five weeks, they have laid down and died, and then fought back when it made no sense for them to have any fight left. And hindsight, as it does, has changed the context, too. While there’s no excuse for the embarrassments of the first two weeks, the two L’s on the schedule—against the only team New England hasn’t been able to beat this year and a team no one has been able to beat—aren’t looking as bad. The two wins, meanwhile, came against teams that were winless at the time, but both were real victories, requiring comebacks and last stands.

So the team may not be hopeless, but still doesn’t inspire much hope. Plus, even the “Suck for Luck” dream is dead, as the Chiefs are now in line behind or alongside 10 other teams—including the Eagles and Falcons!—for that first draft pick. As Lyle put it plainly in his post yesterday, “the odds of the Chiefs getting the #1 overall pick are about as likely as the Chiefs winning the division at this point.” And that, frankly, is depressing. This team seems destined for mediocrity of the mediocre kind: Four wins? Five wins? Maybe six? The Chiefs still don’t have an identity and it’s hard to imagine exactly what identity will emerge. I can see this team losing to Denver and then beating the Patriots or Packers. I really can.

So…it’s probably just as well that we are heading into the bye week, that curious once-a-year (per team) phenomenon that the NFL introduced in 1990 (according to Wikipedia), in order to extend the season by a week and “provide time for teams to rest” (according to nflbyeweek.com*). Perhaps we should all take a rest, too, some time to clear our heads and clear the slate.

*Yes, that’s real: there is an entire web site—one page—dedicated solely to a listing of NFL teams’ byes by week. It is brought to you by the same people who created whatdayoftheweekisitwhereyoulive.org and clickheretoseeawebpage.net.

What? Is there something wrong with that headline? It’s true, or at least factual. And so are these:

Chiefs Only Two Back In Race For AFC’s Top Seed

Chiefs Will Need To Settle For 14-2 Season

Chiefs Unbeaten Against Division In 2011

Clark Hunt Celebrates Another Year Of Record Profits

No, this is not going to be another Pollyanna-ish pep talk. To quote the guy who was proofreading the alphabet and noticed something missing between E and G: “F that.”

The point (if there’s a point) is that there really is no way to put a positive spin on what’s happening. The sad fact is that essentially all of us will admit there’s no way we’ll see any of those headlines a month or even a week from now (except, of course, for that last one). And there’s really no way to make sense,* or for that matter, fun, of all this, either.

*Be warned, this post will have a lot of asterisks and even double asterisks,** if only to fill space where there is no coherent line of reasoning.

**See?

There is no comedy here, unless it’s a Divine Comedy: The lockout was the first level of hell* and it has descended from there to the preseason and down with each regular-season game, and each new torn ACL. To paraphrase Mel Brooks, “Tragedy is when Jamaal Charles cuts his finger; comedy is when the Detroit Lions walk into an open sewer and die.” (Not exactly sure how or whether that applies, but I gotta fill this post with words, people.)

*Or if you insist on being an I-told-you-so realist, it probably started with the final regular-season game last year against the Raiders, followed by the Wild Card blowout…

Like all of you, I’ve got my computer desktop set with the official, AA-endorsed wallpaper. What a brilliant, visual reminder that the season hasn’t even really begun. And yet, it still feels all but over. (more…)

WARNING: This post ends with a bad rap parody.

It’s hard to believe, maybe, that this week marks the four-year anniversary of the debut of HBO’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. In fact, to celebrate,* the NFL Network broadcast a HK:TCWTKCC marathon yesterday. For one day, it was August 2007 all over again, and the whole gang was there: Herm Edwards, of course, and Gunther “%&#^@!” Cunningham, along with the stars of the show: Turk and Tank. Boomer Grigsby. The Croyles (mostly Kelli). And poor, poor Bobby Sippio.

*”To celebrate” is one way to put it. “To kill six dead hours in the middle of a Monday” is another.

It can also be hard to remember that, at the time, things didn’t look so bad. There was hope. We were coming off a 2006 season in which the Chiefs—though some of you, I’m sure, got “this thing twisted and think we backed into this deal”—were a playoff team, with an All-Pro running back that had just lead the league in carries and finished second in yards. Meanwhile, All-World tight end Tony Gonzalez had been signed to a five-year extension. And now, HBO was reviving its acclaimed NFL training-camp reality series and wanted to feature the Chiefs and only the Chiefs—and had been spending the whole summer hyping it.

No, we didn’t know at that moment just how hard we would all be knocked over the next three years. As late as that Halloween, it still seemed like we would continue to have something to root for. First, there were those 24 unanswered second-half points in San Diego to erase a double-digit halftime deficit. Then, in a very sloppy game in Oakland, the Chiefs outlasted the Raiders to prevail 12-10, securing a 4-3 record and, heading into their bye week, first place in the AFC West. That was October 21, 2007.

The Chiefs would not win again until September 28, 2008. They would lose 12 games in a row and 28 of their next 30, getting outscored 808-499 during that stretch—though the close, late-game losses would be the most pathetic and painful.

(You know, just in case you didn’t remember all that.)

But the point is that now, four years later, though we may whine and moan about our young Chiefs’ growing pains, we also have much to cheer. Which means it’s time for another parody.

So with all apologies* to Jaz-Z for hijacking his original (and to Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, who co-wrote the original original), please enjoy, if possible. Just don’t ask me to perform it for you.

Yesterday I was talking to a fellow Chiefs fan who asked me whether or not our Kansas City Chiefs had the best offense in the AFC West. We both quickly came to the same conclusion: yes.

Looking at the other teams in the AFC West it is clear that the Chiefs offense is more “well rounded” than the other teams for the following reasons:

First, it is absolutely undeniable that we have the best running back and running game in the AFC West. Both the Chargers and the Broncos are reportedly having difficulty with their recent number one picks: Ryan Matthews, and Knowshown Moreno. While the Raiders certainly have the potential to be great at RB, Darren McFadden and Michael Bush have battled injuries and yet to put up consistently good numbers. The Raiders clearly have the second best running game in the AFC West.

So all in all it appears that unfortunately I was right about free agency up to this point. No big splashes (unless you count picking up the Cardinals #2 receiver) and a few decent players picked up at bargain prices. According to Scott Pioli he has no set cap for spending from the Hunt family, and basically has free reign to pay for and pick up whoever he wants for the team. Evidently Pioli never saw the movie “Blank Check.”

So either Pioli is lying (or how I’m sure he would justify it telling a “half-truth”) or he really doesn’t see any big free agents that are worth the asking price. At least here the Chiefs are consistent, applying the same mode of thinking that brought the Chiefs Mike Vrabel: Bring in veterans that can play a couple of years to help mentor draft picks until they are ready to take over. I don’t mind that line of thought other than the fact that it makes for a dull free agent market.

Another interesting piece of information from this press conference was that Haley and Pioli had a so called “comprehensive plan” for dealing with free agency. I think we can all agree that nothing that they have done so far appears to be all that comprehensive. During the FA threads it was mentioned that weighing all of the gains and losses that the Chiefs were a worse team this year than last year. Granted that may be true, but the more I think about it the more I think that is not the question we should ask. I think the real question that should be at the forefront of our Addict brain is: Are the Chiefs better than the other AFC West teams?

In the history of the hated—from Al Davis to John Elway to Philip Rivers and everyone in between—the name Brandon Siler doesn’t exactly make the blood boil. Still, when it was announced that the linebacker, who had spent his entire four-year career with the San Diego Chargers, would be the newest Brandon on Kansas City’s defense, it was another small victory, and not only because Siler will hopefully fill a real need for the Chiefs. Our gain is a little sweeter when it’s also a rival’s loss.

Brandon Siler, being interviewed while changing out of his Chargers rags and into his new Chiefs uniform.

And that got me thinking about those times in recent Chiefs history when we’ve had the chance to see an old rival reborn in red and gold—and even wash away his sins with a game-changing or dominating performance against his old team. Even something as relatively mundane as a well-executed third-down conversion or defensive stop for short gain has an added ounce of gratification. There’s that feeling of “Yeah, that’s right—he’s with us now.”

So, in no particular order, here are a few of the notable former AFC West adversaries who saw the light (or were traded, or discarded by the forces of darkness and picked up as a steal in free agency, etc.) and used their football force for good.

Is anybody else sick and tired of talking about the NFL lockout and new CBA agreement? Me too, that’s why I am promising not to use the words “lockout” or “CBA” for the rest of this piece. If I absolutely feel the need to reference them I will simply refer to them as the “situation”. Otherwise this post will stick to some good old-fashioned NFL offseason talk. With free agency about to begin most of us have a pretty good grasp of where the Chiefs stand. If you feel behind, I’ll catch you up. We have a ton of money to spend, we need to resign Tamba Hali, and we still need a nose tackle (and depending on who you talk to, maybe a RT or WR too). There, you’re good to go.

The rest of this post will give you a look at where our AFC West rivals stand. I’ll show you how much cap space they have to work with, what players they have that are free agents, and what their top needs currently are. The goal of every team is to win the Super Bowl. The first step to meeting that goal is making the playoffs and the only way you can insure that you do that is to win your division. Last year the Chiefs were able to do that despite the fact that the Chargers were seen as the “better” team and the Raiders went undefeated in the division. Then there were the Broncos (insert Tebow/Elway/McDaniels joke of your choice here). So will the Chiefs be able to maintain their hold on the division now that the other teams will be gunning for them? Obviously there will be many factors that determine the answer to that question, but how each team handles the upcoming free agent frenzy will have a major impact for sure.

A look at each of the Chiefs’ rivals after the break.

It is well known in league circles that McDaniels drafted using the scouting function on Madden.

According to Woody Paige of the Denver Post, former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels almost immediately regretted drafting RB Knowshon Moreno.

According to Paige, McDaniels and his staff quickly decided Moreno was a bust:

What I do know — from someone who worked closely with Josh and is someone I trust to tell me the truth — is that after the draft, McDaniels and the staff believed privately they made a big mistake on Moreno. He was not what they thought. He hasn’t been tough, smart, motivated, if that’s what you’re asking. He has been a bust. I’ve said it before. He’s not a great clubhouse guy. Interpret that how you want, and he’s been a wimp on the field.

From www.denverpost.com (share this quote)

Kind of hilarious. Looks like Moreno is just one in a long line of stupid personnel decisions made by McDaniels. Then again, since McDaniels was usually wrong about everything, perhaps his belief that Moreno is a bust means he is actually a hall of famer in the making. But still, McDaniels drafted him in the first place so going by the logic that McDaniels is always wrong, if he drafted him thinking he was good then he is probably not…but then again, if McDaniels later believed…

I’ve gone cross-eyed.

The point is, Moreno sucks. And so does McDaniels.

Go Chiefs!

If you haven’t heard yet, teams other than the Kansas City Chiefs are picking in the 2011 NFL Draft. In fact, those teams play a very important role in the Chiefs’ draft since the Chiefs don’t pick in the top 5 this year. Who the 20 teams before us pick can have a significant impact on who we draft. So, for those wondering why I don’t think AJ Green or Julio Jones will be there for us at 21, take a look at one way I see the first round of the Draft going.

EA Sports is doing a NCAA style bracket tournament to decide on the new cover athlete for it’s popular football franchise Madden NFL Football.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is one of the finalists and drew popular Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow in the first round of the tournament.

When the news broke, I commented that it was a big unfair that Tebow was a finalist, given that he has accomplished very little in the NFL. I argued that Champ Bailey would be a much better candidate for the Broncos. I also gave warning to Chiefs fans that a Charles victory could mean the dreaded Madden Curse could, for the first time, come to Kansas City.

As of now, it looks like Charles is going to advance. ESPN.com just released an article to give an update on the first round Madden voting. According to the article, Charles is kicking Tebow’s rear.

Another shocker is the fact that Tim Tebow, the man who was leading the NFL in jersey sales as a rookie, is losing to Jamaal Charles of the Chiefs, 64.9% to 35%. What happened to all of those Tebow fans out there? Are we seeing a fan backlash against the quarterback? Should EA Sports have went with Brandon Lloyd for the cover instead?

More after the jump.
