It looks as though one of the biggest questions concerning the Kansas City Chiefs heading in to the season opener has finally been answered.

Derrick Johnson will start at ILB.

Adam Teicher has the story in his latest entry for the Kansas City Star.

Teicher nabbed a couple of quotes from Demorrio Williams, who understandably is not pleased with the news.

“They said Derrick is going to start out the first game,” he said. “I’m just going to come to work every day and do my job.”

While a majority of fans seemed to want Johnson to start over Williams most of the off season, Demorrio’s productive preseason is likely to cast some doubts about which player is the best option.

More from Teicher:

Williams led the Chiefs in sacks in the preseason with three. Asked if he played well enough in the preseason to win the job, Williams said, “I don’t have to answer that question. You already know the answer to that question. What do you think?”

Check out Adam’s entire article here.

What do you think, Addicts? Is DJ the right choice to start at MLB? Should Haley change his thinking and start both Williams and Johnson? Or should he stick with the Belcher/Johnson combo?

Strap in, Addicts. I am going to give you my blue print for fixing the Chiefs defense in one season. I believe if the Chiefs follow my blue print for success, along with Romeo Crennel’s coaching, the Chiefs can have a top 10 defense as
early as next season. Let’s get started.

Fist let’s take a look at KC’s ascending players. These are players who are still young and who should improve with Crennel’s coaching and their furthered experience playing in the NFL. These are players who should hold on to their starting position and who do not need replacing.

DE Glenn Dorsey

DE Tyson Jackson

Dorsey and Jackson are going to be just fine. Mark my words. Dorsey is already fine, racking up over 50 tackles in his 2nd season in the league and his 1st season playing a new position. Before the dissenters start throwing out his sack totals, know that Glenn Dorsey was never a big sack guy, not even in college. Even when the Chiefs drafted him for the 4-3 they never expected him to put up big sack numbers. They wanted him to stuff the run and cause some pressure in the backfield. Dorsey did a good job of both last season. Does he need to improve his pass rush? Yes. The same goes for Jackson. However, it is important to remember that defensive lineman almost always take about 3 or 4 years to fully develop. Neither Dorsey, nor Jackson will ever be expected to put up huge sack totals playing in a 3-4. If they can work their way up to 4 or 5 a season and continue to improve vs. the run, they could be Pro Bowlers. The tools are there. Folks clamoring for the Chiefs to trade Dorsey are delusional.

I have been thinking it over and I believe the best move the Chiefs could make in FA is to sign Julius Peppers to a 3 or 4 year contract. It will be expensive but the Chiefs have the money to spend.

Why sign a DE when the Chiefs have two young, top 5 draft picks playing end already? Why indeed. I don’t want Peppers to play DE for the Chiefs. PEPPERS doesn’t want to play DE for the Chiefs, nor any other team for that matter.

He wants to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.

See ya, Mike Vrabel.

Look, Mike Vrabel is great and everything but he is 34 and probably just had his last productive season. Even if he can manage to stay fairly productive, he is likely to get bitten by the injury bug ala Donnie Edwards.

Andy Studebaker or “Mike Vrabel Jr.” as I like to call him, is great. He has been a surprise and I would love to see what he could do, but he is still very young and may not be ready to bare the starting load just yet. Vrabel’s contract is up. I say let him go. He will be fairly expensive to resign and won’t be half as valuable as Peppers.

The Chiefs Defense is terrible. It has been terrible for so long that the Chiefs Offense has gone from terrible to great and back to terrible again in the same span. They were bad when Jarred Allen was here. They were bad for Greg Robinson. Bad for Gunther Cunningham.

This year was no different, right? The Chiefs gave up big days on the ground some weeks and other weeks, big games through the air. Sometimes, they combined them for a truly horrific day. It seemed there was no end in site to the defensive ineptness.

I’m here today to say that I think, as long as a couple calculated moves are made this offseason, that the Chiefs defensive troubles may soon be over.

He will miss the final two preseason games and play with a cast when the season starts. Wes Dacus will start in his place.

Who in the hell is Wes Dacus, you ask? Well, when you search him on Wikipedia you get nothing. That always scares me about a player. When you search him on Google, you find a 1960′s Canadian instrumental band called Wes Dakus & the Rebels. You have to search Weston Dacus exactly to really find anything on him at all. Scary.

Anyway, Dacus is an undrafted rookie out of Arkansas. The Chiefs obviously like him, and apparently he can play all three linebacker positions. All I know is that if this trend continues, Derrick Johnson is going to be in the defensive huddle come opening day saying who the hell are these guys? Pat Thomas? Wes Dacus? Huh? What? Unless D.J. also…not going there. Knock on wood.

By now you’ve likely heard of the sexy new 3-3-5 scheme Gunther Cunningham has concocted. Apparently, it uses Tank Tyler at defensive tackle, Brian Johnston and Jason Parker at defensive end, and Derrick Johnson and Pat Thomas at linebacker. What about Demorrio Williams, you ask? Ol’ Gun is essentially lining him up at Derrick Thomas‘ old falcon position, a hybrid DE/LB who’s sole purpose is to blitz off the edge and wreak havoc in the backfield.

Personally, I’m loving it. Our defensive ends struggled to rush the passer against the Bears’ weak O-line, and Demorrio has blazing speed. Maybe this is why he was inked in the first place? I also think we now have the defensive backs to do this after adding the Brandons (Carr and Flowers) and DaJuan Morgan.

What does everybody else think of Gunther’s new 3-3-5 defense?

I still can’t believe we signed a linebacker, though. Then again, Demorrio Williams is young, can straight fly and we signed him on the cheap (an average of $3.2 million a year). Plus, Donnie Edwards is old and was banged up late last season, while Napoleon Harris didn’t play up to his contract. Will Harris get cut? That’s the big question coming out of this signing, because Williams will definitely start next season.

Zach and I are thinking that the Chiefs have just decided to go out and sign the best young, cheap, under-the-radar talent available, reason being that we have more holes talent wise than Swiss cheese. I think we’ll continue to see this strategy utilized, but at a slow pace. The Chiefs want to have leverage, and they currently have none in a players’ market. We also think that they want to have money when the well dries up for a lot of the other teams with cap room. That way they can scoop up some of the unsigned talent out there, and at a reasonable rate.

Let’s wait and see what the Chiefs do next.

These are the Chiefs‘ scheduled visits that have been reported widely enough that we feel comfortable confirming them:

K Josh Brown, Seattle – Today/Saturday (unless he signs with St. Louis today)

OLB Demorrio Williams, Atlanta – Today

CB Jacques Reeves, Dallas – Tuesday

That’s all we have right now, besides rumors that we are interested in Donte’ Stallworth, Drew Carter and Randall Gay, though nothing is confirmed.

One other idea I want to point out before I sign off is this: Dwayne Robertson. The Jets are going to likely cut him after not receiving any trade offers of value, the NFLN’s Adam Schefter is reporting. Most of the other teams who needed DTs have traded for one, so we might not have a ton of competition. He still has to be cut, though. That would free us up to draft something else besides DT in the upcoming draft.

Oh, one more thing–the Dolphins signed Josh McCown. That probably means that they aren’t going to pick Matt Ryan.

Out…for now…

Ex-Falcon Demorrio Williams will visit the Chiefs it appears first, before the Bears and Bucs. Does this mean that Donnie Edwards will be cut? Napoleon Harris? Edwards moved inside? That one of them will lose their starting position? Who knows, but Williams is only 27, and was a full-time starter a year ago. Like Josh Brown, he also went to Nebraska (boooooo!), a school we’ve had some luck with over the years.

We don’t really need him, but maybe he fits into our long-term plans. I have no problem with this move, really, if it happens. Any Big 12 fans who have the 411 on Williams? Atlanta residents?
