On Day Three of the 2011 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs had five picks. Anyone chosen on this day should, generally, be considered a developmental prospect. So let’s take a look at what talent the Chiefs have to develop.

The Chiefs’ fourth round pick of defensive back Jalil Brown may not have been an exciting pick, but is a move that could show instant rewards in the coming season. The NFL is a passing league and a team can never have enough quality DBs. Brown adds depth not only at cornerback but also at the safety position. This versatility is quite possibly one of the reasons the Chiefs drafted him since it is a Scott Pioli Draft buzzword.

One of the biggest influences on the NFL Draft is Free Agency. In that free agency period a need in the draft can disappear with a single signing. A weakness on a team can become a strength. Some teams do hardly anything during that period while others throw money around like a monkey flings its poop.

My policy on Free Agency is to look for deals to be had while adding depth unless you are a playoff contender. It joys me to say that the Kansas City Chiefs are playoff contenders. That does not mean I think the Chiefs should start spending money left and right. However, I am in favor of a bit of a splurge.

Of course all of this is moot unless the owners and the NFLPA can find common ground in time for there to be a free agency period. I’ve written before how I believe Free Agency is important to the Chiefs in order for them to continue to be a playoff contender. My opinion hasn’t changed. To that end, here are a few players that I have my eye on as we (possibly) approach Free Agency.

Now that the 2010 NFL Season has concluded, it is time to focus on the offseason. Unfortunately, this offseason will be marred by concern over NFL Labor negotiations. However, since I can’t go up to each negotiator, slap their face, and tell them to get the deal done; I’ll have to find something else to keep myself busy. Since the draft is a sure thing with or without a new CBA, I figured I would focus on that.

Before reading this I need you to understand three things. The first is that I am doing this based on the idea of no free agency. Second, I am pretending that I’m sitting in the General Manager’s seat. I am not pretending that I am Scott Pioli. However, it should be known that he and I share our like for smart, high character guys. Third is that these choices will change many times before the actual draft occurs. One of the biggest events leading up to the Draft, the NFL Combine, has not yet occurred and so these players will move up and down the board depending on their performance there. With that being said, here is my Chiefs’ mock draft.

Are Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers ready to start together at cornerback? I say, yes, because if the Chiefs are going to get slaughtered regardless, then we’ve gotta at least play our young guys. Flowers has looked pretty damn good, and Carr has been hit and miss. Still, you can see how much potential he has on almost every play. Meanwhile, Pat Surtain is just as saavy and smart as he is slow, which means he’s better suited to play nickelback at this point in his career. Also, rookie Matt Ryan and the Falcons will be a much easier first-start match-up for Carr than Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal would be. I’m down with the decision all the way.

Will the Brandons get the job done as rookie starting CBs?

The New Orleans Saints have made a splash in free agency with cornerback Randall Gay. The Saints have added another corner two years in a row from a top-tier team to try and improve their secondary. The move will help the Saints have more freedom in the first round of the draft. Gay made the Saints his top priority and got paid for it.

The Times Picayune is reporting that the deal is worth about $6.7 million in salary and bonuses over the first two years, with a chance to go up to $9 million, based on playing time.

Gay, who played at LSU, made the Saints his first visit and his first priority in free agency according to the Times Picayune.

Former Pats CB Gay reportedly agrees to contract with Saints – ESPN

The former New England Patriots backup (did have three starts last year) was intriguing to the Chiefs, but I am sure we had a visit scheduled with him after about four teams did. We figure if they can make it to Kansas City then they don’t have any real offers. So King Carl can bring them in and play hardball.

The Saints also resigned WR Devery Henderson.

Kelly has had a string of injuries that has limited his playing time, but he at least adds to the cornerback group that is left in free agency.

At one point, Kelly was the only solid man to man coverage CB this team had. The last few seasons though, fans and coaches have gotten used to not seeing much of Kelly, as injuries (including the dreaded foot injury for corners) have kept him out of the lineup more often that he has been in it.

Kelly might not be our answer at corner, but I would at least like to take a look at him. Matter of fact, if you’re a free agent corner I would love for the Chiefs to take a look at you. Since most of the corners got tagged and left the group rather bare, Kelly made a wise decision to test the free agent market.
