According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub will leave the team to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.

From the Sun-Times:

After a long and distinguished run with the Bears, special teams coordinator Dave Toub is expected to make a lateral move to the Kansas City Chiefs, two league sources said.

Toub oversaw special teams for all nine of Lovie Smith’s seasons with the Bears, and he consistently had among the strongest units in the NFL.

Toub is very highly regarded in league circles and some would even go as far as to call him the best special teams coach in the NFL.

This is a huge land for the Chiefs. The Bears have yet to hire a new head coach and while Toub likely would have had a chance to stay on under the new regime, the uncertainty in Chicago may have led to his deciding to bolt for KC. After all, when the league is paying musical chairs, you don’t want to be the one standing when the music stops.

Maybe the man who brought you Devin Hester can get some more excitement out of the KC return game.

All right, Addicts. What do you think of the hire?

Before you answer, remember that Toub is the man who came up with this:

The Kansas City Chiefs showed they haven’t given up on the 2011 season by going on the road and beating the Chicago Bears.

The Chiefs got key contributions from a number of players on both sides of the ball but the story of the game was a KC defense that stifled the Bears all game long. Chicago RB Matt Forte went down with an injury after Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson’s helmet crashed into his right knee on a tackle. Forte only logged five carries in the game and was replaced by Marion Barber. The Chiefs defense was able to hold Barber in check.

KC also managed some solid pass rush getting sacks from, and this isn’t a typo, Tyson Jackson and John McGraw.

More after the jump.

I brought this upon myself.

When I started dating my girlfriend five years ago, she wasn’t much of a football fan. Born and raised in Chicago, she had a special place in her heart for the Bears and the Illini but her interests were more in the realm of theater and fashion.

Once things turned serious and we moved in together, she noticed I started vanishing for hours at a time on Sunday afternoons in the fall. We live in New York City, you see, and the Kansas City Chiefs don’t get a lot of time on the airwaves out here. Thankfully I found myself a great Chiefs bar in Manhattan. Curious as to why I always came home slightly drunk and surly every Sunday night, she decided to join me for the second game of the 2007 season.

“Maybe I’ll come to the game this week,” she told me. “They’re playing the Bears.”

She didn’t stay long. The bar was overrun with a hoard of KC fans as well as a large group of the worst kind of annoying Jets fans. We were a bit late and there was nowhere to sit. It was not a comfortable situation and she just didn’t care enough to hang.

The Chiefs lost the game 20-10. Damon Huard played QB for the Chiefs and Cedric Benson ran for 101 yards for Chicago.

A lot can change in four years.

My girlfriend now owns at least two Kansas City Chiefs shirts. After years and years of brainwashing, I slowly turned her into a football fan. Just like any good boyfriend, I worked hard to get her on my side. The lovable Chiefs won her over and now she sits next to me on most Sundays to cheer on the boys in red and gold.

She even drafted her first fantasy football team this season. She’s in first place and will be going to the playoffs. I have three teams and two of them are already eliminated from the postseason.

Unfortunately, as her love of the game grows, so does her affection for her Chicago Bears. Sure, she roots for the Chiefs but she’s from Chicago. He dad is a Bears fan. I’m not so foolish as to try to challenge her father.

So today the enemy is on my couch. She’s eating my chips and drinking my beer. Inspired by our “Inside The Enemy Camp” series where we talk with a writer from the site of the team the Chiefs are playing, I decided to do a brief Q & A with my girlfriend the Bears fan this week.

McDaniels might have made a lot of terrible choices in Denver but he got trading Jay Cutler right.

December 14th, 2008 was a big day in the lives of Herm Edwards, Carl Peterson, Josh McDaniels, Matt Cassel, Scott Pioli, Mike Shannahan, Donnavan McNabb, Jay Cutler, Lovie Smith, Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow as well as for fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears.

Only none of them knew it.

It is crazy to think that one single football play could have such a drastic impact on the paths of so many but it happened. It happened on a cold, December day at Arrowhead Stadium.

On that day, Herm Edwards was taking his 2-11, self described “college team,” into a battle with the ever underachieving 5-8 San Diego Chargers. The Chiefs were 2-11 and had nothing much left to play for except for Edwards’ job and for the chance to play spoiler.

The Chargers were attempting to make their customary late season charge at the AFC West title. Unfortunately, they were still trailing Mike Shannahan and the Denver Broncos. Jay Cutler was Shanahans QB at the time and was in the midst of a Pro Bowl season.

Things weren’t looking good for the Chargers that day at Arrowhead. They allowed three sacks to a Chiefs team that managed only 10 on the entire season, setting an all-time NFL record for futility. On top of allowing the Chiefs to get 25% of their season’s sacks in one game, the Chargers were also allowing Herm’s “College All-Star Squad” to beat them.

Late in the 4th quarter, the Chiefs were leading 21-10 and looked to have the game in the bag. Yet, as fans in Kansas City know all too well, when Herm Edwards is on your sideline no lead is safe. The Chiefs used all three of their second half timeouts despite their 18 point lead and the Chargers mounted a furious comeback. Gunther Cunningham’s defense allowed 11 points in the final 79 seconds of the contest to lose 22 to 21.

The key play came when the Chargers attempted an onside kick with just over a minute to go. The ball bounced right into the waiting arms of Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe, who allowed the ball to bounce off of his chest and into the hands of Kassim Osgood.

If Dwayne Bowe holds on to that football, the game is over. The Chiefs would have gone on to win, moving their record to a much shinier 3-11 and the Chargers would have fallen to 5-9, eliminating themselves from playoff contention. The Broncos would have gone to the playoffs, Mike Shannah and wouldn’t have gotten fired, Donnavan McNabb wouldn’t have got traded to the Redskins, Josh McDaniels would never have been hired in Denver, Tim Tebow wouldn’t have been drafted by Denver and most frighteningly, there is a chance, albeit a slim one, that Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards would have been given one more year to finish destroying the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears today at Soldier Field and will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl!

It was a game with plenty of ups and downs, especially for the Bears. Chicago couldn’t get anything done on offense with Jay Cutler on the field but their defense managed to keep them in the game, holding the Packers to just 14 points for most of the game.

The Packers D got to jay Cutler and after just one series into the second half, Cutler was done for the day and Todd Collins took over. Collins was terrible and was benched just before the end of the 3rd quarter. He gave way to 3rd string QB Caleb Haine who nearly lead the Bears to an improbable comeback.

In the end, however, the Packers held on and will enjoy some champagne as they watch the AFC Championship game to see who they will face in the Super Bowl.

Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers.

Thanks to our good friends at TGI Friday’s, we are going to have a series of sponsored posts on the weekend’s best games. We’ll start with the obvious choice first.

Kansas City Chiefs (8-4) @ San Diego Chargers (6-6)

The Kansas City Chiefs will travel to San Diego this weekend to take on the Chargers in a key AFC West matchup. For the Chiefs, a victory would almost ensure their place in the AFC playoffs while a loss would all but eliminate the Chargers. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, QB Matt Cassel had an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday, putting his status for Sunday’s game in serious doubt.

Starting in place of Cassel would be backup QB Brodie Croyle, who is 0-9 as an NFL starter.

The Chargers have been battling through injuries and have ridden the arm of QB Philip Rivers to 6-6 after a 2-5 start. A loss would mean the end of San Diego’s reign atop the AFC West and they are expected to come out firing.

The national media probably won’t give this game much attention but it is perhaps the most important AFC West game in years.

More after the jump.

Kansas City Chiefs (6-4) @ Seattle Seahawks (5-5)

The Kansas City Chiefs got their season back on track with a win over the hapless Arizona Cardinals last week and Sunday they will look to rectify their road woes when they travel to Seattle to take on a former division rival in the Seahawks.

Seattle will be looking to climb back above .500 after suffering an embarrassing loss to the New Orleans Saints.

If Seattle hopes to stop the Chiefs they will have to muster up some defense. They currently rank 30th in the league against that pass giving up 283.2 yards per game.

The Chiefs have struggled on the road so if Seattle can get their passing game going against a Chiefs secondary that is susceptible to the big play, the Seahawks might be able to pull out a victory. This could be a close one.

More after the jump.

Earlier today, we brought you the news that the Bears and Mike Martz were trying to coax former Chiefs QB Trent Green out of retirement.

The story got be to thinking about Trent and all he did for KC while he played for the Chiefs. Trent was a fantastic leader and he was one hell of a QB. Aside from the great Lenny Dawson, Trent Green was far and away the best QB the Chiefs have had in their rich history.

A lot of people still aren’t sure if Matt Cassel can be the guy in KC and rightfully so. Still, remember that Trent Green didn’t have a great first season in Kansas City either despite having arguably more weapons at his disposal than Cassel had in 2009.

More and Trent Green highlights, after the jump.

Mike Mulligan of the Chicago Sun Times is reporting that Bears GM, Mike Martz, contacted former Chiefs QB, Trent Green about coming back to football to serve as a backup to Jay Cutler.

The report states that Green declined the offer but that “The situation might be fluid.”

We all remember the horrifying hit Trent took in the 2006 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Trent was never the same and dealt with concussion issues for what remained of his career.

Trent is looking to get in to broadcasting and recently signed on to do the Chiefs preseason games.

Trent Green is one of my favorite Chiefs of all time. I was very concerned about his health when he continued to play after sustaining a couple of concussions and I was relieved when he finally retried. As much as I would love to see Trent make a Bret Favre like comeback (even though Favre never really left) I hope he stays retired. His best days are behind him and I would hate to see any serious harm come to him.

Filed to ESPN: Chester Taylor reaches agreement with Bears on a four-year, $12.5 million deal that includes $7 million gtd in year one.

The Chiefs were at one time rumored to be interested in Taylor though it looks like the BEars snatched him up.

On the Chris Chambers front, Bengals.com is reporting that the team could be interesting in plucking up Chris Chambers:

Owens is just part of a list that includes Antonio Bryant, Kevin Walter, Chris Chambers, and Josh Reed. The way head coach Marvin Lewis talked last week at the NFL scouting combine, the Bengals aren’t looking to make a quick, lucrative deal. But in the past they have put out feelers on the first day and then waited for the market to settle.

Still no word on any Chiefs interests from any of my sources.

What a way to kick off the Chiefs‘ 2008 season, huh? Here are my thoughts…

The star of the first half was undoubtedly Brodie Croyle. People have it twisted about Croyle; we like him and are pulling for him, but we just didn’t possess the blind faith in him that some Chiefs fans do. Tonight, he definitely made us believe a little bit more than we did yesterday. His opening drive was the perfect way for him to start this season, not to mention put last season behind him. The drive was 16 plays, but that wasn’t what impressed me the most. What impressed me the most was that he was 5-5 on third down conversions. I also liked that broken play he turned into a scramble for a first down. A sharp performance overall.

The star of the second half was Arrowhead Addict favorite Bobby Sippio. Say what you will about his speed, but the guy could catch a bullet blindfolded with chopsticks. He’s also one helluva load to bring down in the open field, every bit as hard to drag down as Dwayne Bowe or Tony Gonzalez. He led the team in receiving with three catches for 57 yards and a TD, and simply took over the game during the game-winning drive. It was good to see Sippio given a chance, as I have always felt he’s a better player than either Jeff Webb or Sammie Parker. All the guy needs is an actual shot. Hopefully, Herm will look at what he did and get him some burn with the first and second strings next game. Regardless, he took a huge step towards making the team tonight.

Go Chiefs!

Ten Reasons Why the Chiefs are Cooler Than Da Bears:

10. Our players don’t go all Alec Baldwin on people in text messages. Brian Urlacher, I’m looking at you.

9. Who pays Devin Hester a bajillion dollars to be their No. 1 WR? A desperate, desperate Jerry Angelo, that’s who.

8. The failed Cedric Benson project was more recent than the failed Ryan Sims one.

7. Lance Briggs getting his “drive” back isn’t a good thing.

6. Greg Olsen. Looks like He-Man, plays like She-Ra. He’s no Tony Gonzalez.

5. Brandon Lloyd and Kevin Jones were the big offseason additions? I wouldn’t have those guys on my fantasy team if I were in a 20-team league.

4. Will Ricky Manning Jr. have more arrests or picks this year? Tough call. Very tough.

3. Rex Grossman.

2. Kyle “Neckbeard” Orton is their starting quarterback? No wonder Rex is still on the roster.

1. Bears fans can’t even tailgate? So much for being Superfans.

I just saw that Moose Knuckle selected Martin Rucker in the first round and just about spit up my drink. I don’t know if it was Mizzou homerism, or if the Carolina Panthers wanted to keep it in the fam (Mike Rucker), but it was the worst pick of the draft so far. Rucker is a fine player, but he’s not even rated as the best tight end out of a mediocre class of tight ends. He’s probably a third-round pick. Your pick, though, not mine. Maybe he’ll make me eat my words.

Next up are the Chicago Bears and a poll since we waited far too long.. Will the Bears go QB here, or do Jerry and Lovie still love them some denial?
