The King is back baby.

Our old friend Carl “The King” Peterson helped the Miami Dolphins interview former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, according to the Florida Sun Sentinel.

Carl Peterson, the former Kansas City football czar and long-time friend of Dolphins owner Steve Ross, is involved in the interviewing of the new Dolphins head coach, two sources said on Tuesday.

Peterson stepped off the helicopter that landed at Dolphins headquarters in Davie with Ross and candidate Jeff Fisher, the sources said.

King Carl is often linked to the Dolphins because of his relationship with Ross. It seems just about every year there is a report that The King is going to take over in South Beach as the team’s GM.

This incident could just be Carl helping out his boy in a consultant role, or it could be the beginning of another reign of terror.

What say ye, former subjects of The King?

Our old friend Carl Peterson’s name has been popping up as a possible replacement for Bill Parcels as “Football Czar” in Miami.

According to Phin Phanatic’s Brian Miller, this is unlikely:

According to Brian Biggane of the Palm Beach Post who I spoke with last night on Finsradio (you can listen to the archive of the show by clicking the link) Peterson will not likely be joining the Miami Dolphins in any official capacity.

From phinphanatic.com (share this quote)

Makes sense. Peterson is too busy haunting the dreams of Chiefs fans to take another job.

WARNING: This post ends with a bad rap parody.

It’s hard to believe, maybe, that this week marks the four-year anniversary of the debut of HBO’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. In fact, to celebrate,* the NFL Network broadcast a HK:TCWTKCC marathon yesterday. For one day, it was August 2007 all over again, and the whole gang was there: Herm Edwards, of course, and Gunther “%&#^@!” Cunningham, along with the stars of the show: Turk and Tank. Boomer Grigsby. The Croyles (mostly Kelli). And poor, poor Bobby Sippio.

*”To celebrate” is one way to put it. “To kill six dead hours in the middle of a Monday” is another.

It can also be hard to remember that, at the time, things didn’t look so bad. There was hope. We were coming off a 2006 season in which the Chiefs—though some of you, I’m sure, got “this thing twisted and think we backed into this deal”—were a playoff team, with an All-Pro running back that had just lead the league in carries and finished second in yards. Meanwhile, All-World tight end Tony Gonzalez had been signed to a five-year extension. And now, HBO was reviving its acclaimed NFL training-camp reality series and wanted to feature the Chiefs and only the Chiefs—and had been spending the whole summer hyping it.

No, we didn’t know at that moment just how hard we would all be knocked over the next three years. As late as that Halloween, it still seemed like we would continue to have something to root for. First, there were those 24 unanswered second-half points in San Diego to erase a double-digit halftime deficit. Then, in a very sloppy game in Oakland, the Chiefs outlasted the Raiders to prevail 12-10, securing a 4-3 record and, heading into their bye week, first place in the AFC West. That was October 21, 2007.

The Chiefs would not win again until September 28, 2008. They would lose 12 games in a row and 28 of their next 30, getting outscored 808-499 during that stretch—though the close, late-game losses would be the most pathetic and painful.

(You know, just in case you didn’t remember all that.)

But the point is that now, four years later, though we may whine and moan about our young Chiefs’ growing pains, we also have much to cheer. Which means it’s time for another parody.

So with all apologies* to Jaz-Z for hijacking his original (and to Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, who co-wrote the original original), please enjoy, if possible. Just don’t ask me to perform it for you.

Any Chiefs press conference used to be must-see TV for me. This all started after Marty left in ’99. At the time I thought it would just be business as usual. Great defense, bunch of wins, solid team. Then Gunther revealed his insanity. It was funny at first, but after a while it became easy to see the direct correlation between the team and the men in charge of it. For the first time in my fandom, this aspect of the game began to intrigue me.

Carl Peterson was looking to prove the 90s success was all about his roster-building and not Marty’s coaching. So he went cheap and promoted a coach from within he thought he could control. Said coach ended up being crazy and incompetent. Before long we had a team full of punchlines clowning their way through two seasons.

Bam Morris at running back. Elvis Grbac at QB wingin’ 37 passes per game* and throwing hissy-fits whenever someone dropped one of them. Chester McGlockton tossing the ball behind his head as he slowly waddled out of bounds (essentially fumbling on purpose). Marcus Spears bludgeoning an opponent with his helmet during a scrimmage. Cris Dishman scooping up random fumbles and being referred to as a playmaker. Carlton Gray‘s multi-million dollar contract. Gunther saying the quantity of runs was more important than the quality. The insanity was never-ending. We had the fat Tamarick Vanover, Rashaan Shehee, Frank “the Island of Dr.” Moreau, Lew Bush, Lonnie Johnson, Danny Pope (brother of Lenny?), Glenn Cadrez, Patrick “Denny” Dennis, Derrick Ransom (who me and my friends called “Stephen Thompson”). If you liked laughing at the Chiefs, these were the golden years.

*This was during the 2000 season, when Gunther abruptly decided we were now a pass-all-the-time team instead of a run-all-the-time team. The wheels were really coming off the bus at that point.

Quite the butterfly effect. And all because of a general manager’s insecurity. It first occurred to me then what seems obvious now: who these men are, on a personal level, determines how they do these jobs. And who they are is on display for all to see. It’s fascinating.

I think thats part of the reason Pioli’s media policy bothers me so much. He’s taken all the fun out of the press conferences. Most of the time nowadays there is simply very little to learn. That is by design. The entire staff is now adept at answering questions without saying anything. Nobody has a very good read yet on Pioli in particular. He’s been a tough nut to crack, as I’ve said many times. I may not like the way he operates or see the need for it, but I will admit, he’s quite good at it. This team has very nearly rendered the press conference obsolete. Another few years and they won’t even have to do them. No one will care.

Still, for a Pioli presser, I tune in. Got to. I will learn what I can about this man.

My reactions to Scott Pioli’s pre-draft presser after the jump:

Chiefs fans, as you may recall, I work in the retail industry. Right now we are in the midst of our physical inventory process where we prepare for one night where we count everything in the store. This process is very labor intensive and is the reason you were deprived of my Blitz last week. In a major corporation with dozens of different ways inventory can enter or leave the system, sometimes something as simple as counting an item to ensure that you have the correct amount can become a daunting task.

The same can be said of a football team. What I have realized in the several years I have spent regulating inventory is that everyone seems to take for granted that when they check the computer that everything is going to match up. What is perhaps a more astute observation is that no one cares about inventory until it is wrong. No one cares until they need something and it is not there when all of the tools at their disposal show that it should be. These deficiencies seem to erase the vast plethora of other times where everything has been right on, and the focus compacts into a singularity where the memories taken for granted are destroyed like matter in the center of a black hole.

I get to how this relates to the Kansas City Chiefs after the jump.

And three weeks after the Super Bowl and seven weeks after the Chiefs’ last game,* it’s at least a mild comfort to once again have an over-hyped contest to watch on TV come Sunday, perfect for side bets and drinking games.

*It was an honor just being nominated. Oh, bullshit.

But I can understand if red-carpet cocktails and Oscar pools aren’t exactly any kind of substitute for pre-game tailgating and fantasy team-tracking. So in an attempt to bridge the divide, I went ahead and devised this quick quiz for your amusement.*

*What, you’d rather read more about the CBA?

I know what you’re thinking. The Chiefs need to cut Barry Richardson and sign Black immediately. In fact, they might as well cut Ryan O’Callaghan while they’re at it. They won’t need him.

Jordan Black is solid.

Jordan Black = Championship.

In all seriousness, I’m surprised Black has lasted this long in the league. He was just one of a long line of crappy late round picks by Carl Peterson that failed to develop. Peterson’s offensive line picks were so bad that not a single one remains on the Chiefs. Peterson left the Chiefs offensive line in a hole so deep that Scott Pioli is to this day trying to dig them out.

Oh, Chris Bober, Brett Williams, Jordan Black, Kevin Sampson…where have ye gone?

Hey, who knows? Maybe Black will finally develop. He is 31 now. I bet he’ll finally get it.

Come home Jordan and go turkey hunting with Will Shields again.

Unfortunately, that is all they got going for the Chiefs.

I will admit it. When the Chiefs brought in HC Todd Haley, and he had his first press conference, my first thought was, “Wow, where did they find this guy?” Seriously, while watching that press conference I rolled all of the high caliber coaches around in my head that were out there that the media had brought up (Bill Cower being at the top of that list) and wondered, “With all of that talent out there, why the !@#$ did we hire this nobody?”

It only got worse. After watching Thigpen and company win two games the previous season under Herman Munster Edwards, then start out under the new management with a record of 1-5, I saw the Broncos go 6-0 after bringing in the offensive coordinator from the Patriots. I can only liken my disdain at that period to watching someone you start a job with get promoted to management while you’re still stuck cleaning the bathrooms. The fact that it was the Broncos only made it worse. I felt like they had found the superstar coach of the future while we were stuck with some hard-nosed idiot that was a wet towel in the media and sat our best players. I was starting to expect to lose. I was starting to get angry with the team. I was starting to become a hater. What an idiot I was.

If you’re like me, you might have a little trouble believing that Thanksgiving is only two days away. There are several obvious reasons for this: Daylight Saving Time just ended. The weather (at least in Kansas City) has been feeling like late September. And, oh yeah—the Chiefs are still relevant.

Many of you might be flying home in the next day or two, either to be closer to family or just because you enjoy a good holiday rub-down from your local TSA agent. Either way, wherever you are, I assume you’re going to be watching (or streaming, or listening to, or tweeting, or live-blogging, or somehow following) the game on Sunday with intense concentration and a little bit of anxiety. It’s Thanksgiving weekend, and the Chiefs game matters, and not just as a distraction from four days of aunts and uncles or a brief respite from a tryptofan-induced trance. If the season were a single game, then we’re halfway through the third quarter, and the Chiefs are still in it. In fact, they have a one-touchdown lead—and the ball.

And for that alone, I feel like giving thanks.

After the jump, I’ll list a few specific thank-yous (and I’ll start now by saying thanks for lists, which make putting together a post like this so much easier and more amusing).

“Around the year 2000 Carl Peterson inexplicably forgot how to draft. I can’t really say why, but for whatever reason Peterson became one of the worst drafters in the NFL practically overnight.”

That was me, two years ago after Carl Peterson “Stepped down”. There were many reasons to dislike the guy, and he made a lot of mistakes. But it always seemed like drafting was his most obvious Achilles heel. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it might be time to re-think that.

Who are the best players on our team? I suppose answers to that question could vary, but there are a few obvious choices. Brandon Flowers, Tamba Hali, and Jamaal Charles would have to be first ballot for anyone who’s been paying attention. After that the waters muddy somewhat, but Dwayne Bowe and Derrick Johnson have certainly made strong cases for themselves this season. Branden Albert and Glenngary Glenn Dorsey are arguably our best linemen. Dustin Colquitt is a great punter. Brandon Carri s a good number two corner. What do these guys have in common? They were all drafted by Carl Peterson.

Look, I’m glad Carl’s gone. He deserved to be fired for a variety of reasons. And this isn’t meant to be a backhanded slap at Pioli, either. The 2010 draft class looks great. I’m just saying, all our best players were drafted by Carl. Todd Haley is winning games because of the talent Carl Peterson left behind.

The case can actually be made stronger. Even Eric berry, who had his coming out party yesterday, was essentially drafted to replace Bernard Pollard, another standout defender drafted by Carl. Javier Arenas came from the pick we received for Tony Gonzalez, another Peterson draftee. Brian Waters and Sweet Ron, our second-best linemen, were both brought in by the leather-wearing smug smile.

Look, Carl made some MASSIVE blunders on draft day. When he picked Junior Siavii my jaw dropped, and stayed dropped for two years. But Carl put together a great defense in the 90s, drafting Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith and Dale Carter and signing James Hasty. It appears he may have done it again right before he left. Flowers, Carr, Pollard, Hali, DJ and Dorsey (if you like). That amount of talent on one side of the ball is nothing to sneeze at. Turns out all those guys needed was some good coaching. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised our players got better when we upgraded from Herm, Gunther and Krumrie to Romeo Crennel. All hail Romeo Crennel. And his pants. God, I love those pants.

my thoughts on the game after the jump

Here is the 2nd part of my interview with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Kyle Turley. This is probably the juiciest of the 3 part interview.

Kyle was with the Chiefs at an interesting time. He was there for the team’s last playoff appearance as well as for the 4-12 season that followed. Kyle has some interesting things to say about Herm Edwards and Carl Peterson and he provides a insight in to what got the Chiefs in to their current state of suckdom.

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

You had some trouble with injuries over your 2 years in KC but overall, how was your experience playing for the Chiefs?

“It was cool man. You know, it wasn’t what I wanted to be. I was supposed to come back and have the opportunity to play TE. That is what I initially signed on for and they were going to give me that opportunity and then, all of the sudden, Willie Roaf went down and they were put in sort of a pickle offensive line-wise cause he retired. And it just turned in to this thing, you know, they knew me, they knew my passion and where I stood and that being back on the field meant more to me than pretty much anything and so they offered me the job and I just took it. I felt good at the time, my body was in good shape. I should have stayed at TE, you know, it would brought my snaps down to maybe 20 a game, instead of having to run every play of every game. My body after the back injury and after the weight loss, it really wasn’t conducive to playing that offensive line position.

I did the best I could and I was proud of that. I was proud of the way I came back from that injury and I was able to get a few more years out of my NFL career.

Were they the best years? Not by far but I have a lot to be proud of. The first game back after coming back from such a serious back injury was as emotional to me and important to me as any game. I could have gotten my knee blown out that game and retired that day and I would have been completely satisfied just because it was such an ordeal for me to return to the game of football after that back injury. It was a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears man.

So my experience in Kansas City was what it was. We didn’t have much success team-wise, they were rebuilding a lot and we didn’t put many wins together. We lucked into the playoffs that first year.

There was a lot of game playing going on, you know? They were trying to figure out their team and then how they could win. They were just kind of grasping at straws it seemed a lot of times. I think the right people got eliminated and some of the right people got brought in to replace them. That being the case, I think that this year they’ve got great talent to give them a lot of potential to win some games.

If I was a part of that in any way, that’s great man. Just like the Saints winning the Super Bowl, I take great pride that I was a part of that organization to help build whatever it may have been, to help them get where they were going because this game rides on its history, it doesn’t ride on its future and it will always earn its money based on the things that the veterans have come and done. It’s reputation and lure, just the whole thing and what the team believes all comes from the guys who played there. They don’t remember all the wins and losses sometimes but they remember those people that played.”

Not long ago we gave you the heads up that our old friend “King” Carl Peterson was spotted at the NFL league meetings in Orlando. I suggested at the time that the “King” might be looking for a job, possibly with the Miami Dolphins, as he has been linked as a possible successor to Bill Parcells.

Well it looks like more fuel is being thrown on that fire, at least according to Pro Football Talk:

Per a league source, Peterson and Ross were seen together on numerous occasions, with Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano rarely in sight. It has long been believed that Ross will hire Peterson once current V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells leaves.

The source believes that Ireland and/or Sparano could be in trouble if Peterson is hired, given that Peterson would become the G.M. — and the possibility that he would want to hire his own coach.

It may still be possible that Peterson is simply friendly with Ross and is at the meetings because of his duties as the Chairman of USA Football. Still, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Carl Peterson back in the NFL sooner rather than later. After all, it took him 20 years to leave KC. One doesn’t usually stay in a job that long unless he likes it. I bet Peterson’s time away has given him the itch again.

Well, well, well. It looks like the “King” might be looking for another court.
There is a chance Peterson is looking for work. There have also been reports over the last few months, linking Peterson as the successor of Dolphins V.P. of football operations and Todd Haley mentor, Bill Parcells.

We’ll keep an eye on this. What do you think, Addicts? Would you like to see King Carl back in the NFL?

I’m a statistics man, Addicts. They fascinate me. They can tell a hidden story, they can alter reality. Some stats I enjoy are the ones from the Herm Edwards era, in my opinion one of the worst in KC history.

Yours truly making the trek to a preseason win at Chicago's Soldier Field in 2008.

Why?

I’m a firm believer that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

So without further delay, here are a couple I think we need to remember.

1. Of the 53 players on the Chiefs kickoff roster in 2008, only seven joined the team prior to Herm Edwards arrival in 2006.

2. Six rookies were in the Chiefs starting lineup on kickoff weekend in 2008. Thats the most for any KC team since the Chiefs became the Chiefs.

What do I take from that?

Herm and Carl thought they had time. Lots of time. All the time they needed to blow up the KC highrise from the basement up and start building from the ground up.

They thought the KC fans that Carl Peterson brought to Arrowhead (yours truly being one of them), would keep coming. No matter what. No matter how many losses. No matter how embarrassing those losses might be.

And they thought the Hunt family would keep them in their cozy offices at Arrowhead for as long as the view pleased them.

Well as we all know they were wrong. Dead wrong. Out of the NFL wrong.

But was Herm given a chance?

Afternoon Addicts. Now that the Super Bowl is over we will be getting in to fill on offseason mode around here. We’ll be bringing you all the Chiefs news and views we can in the coming weeks as we approach the combine and the draft.

Today, however, is the 10 year anniversery of the death of Chiefs great Derrick Thomas. It would be great if we could all take the time to remember Derrick and his family today. I’ve put a post together in honor of Derrick. Feel free to use the comments to remember him and his incredible play in your own way. Go Chiefs!

Derrick Thomas, a 6-foot-4-inch outside linebacker who has 22 sacks this season, received 2 more points in the voting by a 12-member selection panel of the Downtown Athletic Club in Orlando, Fla., than Broderick Thomas, who is not related.

I was reading over Double D’s excellent feature “Mark it a Double” and something occurred to me. Now that Weiss and Crennel have been hired, the Chiefs have their first united front since the Dick Vermeil era. When Dick was hired he started putting the pieces in place and although it took him a couple of years, the Chiefs got competitive and eventually, they hit the jackpot of a 13-3 season. It was Dick Vermiels team. It was a united front.

When Dick decided to retire, his team was at the end of the line. They had one more playoff run in them and Carl Peterson knew it. Rather than let new his head coach, Herm Edwards, run things as he saw fit from day 1, Peterson forced Herm to roll with Vermiels old crew.

Thus began the era of dysfunction.

“The Chiefs were no better in 2009 than they were in 2008.”

It is the Chiefs fans 2010 January lament. Who can blame them?

It is hard to argue against the idea that the Chiefs did not improve in 2009. Their defense gave up only 16 fewer points than the 08’ squad. The offense scored a whopping 3 points more than Tyler Thigpen and the “Arrowspread” offense. The variance in the numbers between 08’ and 09’ are so minuscule that is it hard to find any real difference between the season that got Herman Edwards fired and the season Todd Haley lead the team, disappointing so many. To most long suffering Chiefs fans, it was just different faces getting the same results.

I’m not here to tell you not to be angry about all the losing. I am here to try to give you an objective look at why the Chiefs 09’ season was not a lateral move. I actually think Haley did a remarkable job, given the circumstances he inherited.

Following the 2008 draft, many of the experts were giving Herm Edwards and Carl Peterson top grades. There was a lot of excitement around the new class and the Chiefs rebuilding project was underway.

By the end of the 2008 season, Carl Peterson had resigned and Herm Edwards was on his way out of town. Some of the players from the 08’ class had had decent seasons, including Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr and Brandon Albert. However, with the old regime on it’s way out, the rookies futures were up in the air.

While many of Herm Edwards’ picks were purged by the new regime, many of the top dogs from the 08’ draft class have survived. Looking over the names, these remaining players have an excellent chance to either lift the team up or cause it to sink, as they enter their 3rd year as pros.

Let’s take a look at who is left and discuss their future roles, after the jump.

When the Chiefs nabbed Brandon Flowers in the 2nd round with the 35th pick of the 2008 NFL draft many experts considered him a steal that low.

Much later in the draft, Herman Edwards and Carl Peterson chose lesser known Brandon Carr, a division II player out of Grand Valley state in the 5th round with the 140th pick. Carr was thought to be talented but a bit of an unknown quantity, being that he did not play at a division I school. It was believed he would be a bit of a project and he began the year as a backup.

The fans may not have realized it at the time, but it was the start of something special.

Carl Peterson has landed his next career in football after being the Chiefs general manager for 20 years. The AP is reporting that Peterson will be the new chairman of USA Football.

Former Kansas City Chiefs executive Carl Peterson is the new chairman of USA Football. He replaces the late Jack Kemp.

USA Football is the national governing body of youth football. Peterson, who spent 20 years with the Chiefs, will serve as chairman of the independent nonprofit.

The group was endowed by the NFL and NFL Players Association in 2002. It hosts more than 100 football events annually, instructing coaches, players and game officials and providing resources for youth football league commissioners.

My old man’s a cardiologist. My mom is a therapist. I’ve been covering the Chiefs for two-and-a-half years. Hell, I figured with all the epidemics floating around Chiefs Nation nowadays, who better to diagnose them than yours truly. Enjoy the first installment of the Addict’s Afflictionary, and brace yourselves for many, many more…

Post-Blackledge Stress Disorder – A condition that has tormented Chiefs fans ever since the Chiefs selected quarterback Todd Blackledge out of Penn State seventh overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. Blackledge became a monumental bust, and most Chiefs fans never recovered. The condition is typically defined as chronic paranoia when it comes to drafting a first-round quarterback, a voyage which almost every NFL team must eventually take.

The severity of this condition has worsened over the years. After former Chiefs GM Carl Peterson (1989-2009) refused to select a first-round quarterback during his 20-year tenure, Chiefs Nation has become much more resistant to the idea of their beloved team doing just that. Medical experts compare it to when a person becomes so obese they’d rather just accept their current state, instead of having the courage to step on a scale, accept the problem and take the proper measures to correct it. One of the surefire signs of PBSD is denial.

In recent years, PBSD has become so severe within the Chiefs Nation community that many fans openly stated that they preferred Brodie “Brokie” Croyle to Chad Pennington, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, and more recently Tyler Thigpen to Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel and Matt Leinart.

Another recent turn in this chronic state of mental illness is delusional thinking. For instance, many fans currently think that new Chiefs GM Scott Pioli finding another Tom Brady or Matt Cassel in the final rounds of the draft is a mortal lock.

PBSD is a very serious condition. There is no current known cure for this ailment, although experts hope the Chiefs actually drafting or trading for a legitimate young franchise quarterback will eliminate all symptoms.

King Carl could never find a young franchise quarterback for the Chiefs during his 20-year tenure. Maybe he should have used Google Earth?

If Swiss Police can find a field full of Mary Jane on GE, maybe it’s the way to go. Do you think the Swiss Police could use it to find us a pass-rushing right defensive end? That’s it; I’m getting on the phone with the folks in Zurich right now. If that fails, I’m setting up my own reality show called, We’ve Got No Sacks. Michael Irvin ain’t got Jack on AA.

By the way, if you haven’t checked out Arrowhead Stadium on Google Earth, check it out. Here’s a good example. And, yes, I am a huge dork. And, no, I don’t care. Hey, we needed something to lighten up the mood following the Chandemonium that broke out earlier!

The Kansas City Star will have live audio for those of you outside the area if you want to tune in.

Will Carl be a Dolphin soon? Rumors have been circulating after his apearance on the sidelines last week of the Dolphin game that he could be in line to replace Parcells or work in some other capacity. Maybe we will get some insight into these issues. Either way its another page being turned in Chiefs history despite mixed feelings about the formerly longest-tenured GM in pro sports.

Say what you will about Carl Peterson, there is no denying that his tenure provided this city and the fans of this team everywhere with some pretty exciting football and that he, more than anyone, was responsible for creating the “Arrowhead Experience.” For that and a host of other reasons, on behalf of appreciative Chiefs fans everywhere, I salute and thank you Mr. Peterson for your many contributions and years of dedicated service to this fantastic organization. I am sure similar success will continue to follow you in Detroit or wherever you happen to land and I wish you only the best on that account.

On that note, I feel I must now move on to the accompanying mob frenzy calling for the head of Herm Edwards and presumably any and all other decision makers. Pretty much everyone I know, have read or listened to fundamentally agreed on what needed to be done with this team after last season. Blow it up and rebuild. Herm and the organization, for the most part, did what we asked of him on that account and there was negligible dissent about the fact that he and the Chiefs, in acing the draft, mastered the essential first step.

Yet, in spite of such universal acclaim and optimism, the dominant consensus about what should be reasonable in terms of a win-loss record for this season remained reservedly low. I believe 4-12 was the most favored prediction. At this point, I would guess the Chiefs stand about a 50-50 chance of going 4-12. But then, so what if they don’t?

Still, if we indeed hit or come close to that mark, I have to admit I will be particularly eager to see how people respond. Why? Because I can hardly wait to see how many people will continue to carry on in shrill fashion, making like this season ended up being some catastrophic disappointment for them. Based on what I see people writing and hear most people saying I totally see that happening. Results meeting expectations be damned apparently, the fevered mob will not be satisfied until it sees the head of Herm Edwards and his entourage roll.

Here’s his take in the KC Star on the firing resignation of “King” Carl Peterson.

The piece was surprisingly short considering Whitlock has been leading the “Fire King Carl” parade float every year for about the last decade. Jabba must have been out drinking some Courvoisier, reveling in Clark Hunt‘s latest move. I’m wondering if he is going to be able to set aside the race card (yeah right) and keep the band playing for Herm’s firing as well?

Here’s an excerpt:

Of course, Hunt stated that Sunday’s 73-second collapse and surrender of a double-digit lead had nothing to do with Carl Peterson’s “resignation.” Yeah, and my affinity for Gates barbecue has nothing to do with the belt of flab wrapped around my waist.

At least he is honest.

There’s also a funny anecdote in the column about Carl not eating Whitlock’s mother’s cooking at her annual Christmas party that is good for a laugh. Aside from that, a disappointing, short and frankly, lazy piece from J-Dub considering how much ink he has used trying to get the events of yesterday to actually happen. I expected more meat from Whitlock about Carl waving the white flag than a Gates BBQ shout out.

What do you think of Whitlock’s send up of King Carl, Addicts?

“Chiefs heading in the right direction.”

“Chiefs are making strides under Edwards.”

Thanks to the two bumbling blobs over at The Kansas City Star, we now have this…

Jason Whitlock, stick to what earns you your paycheck — blaming Carl Peterson for global warming, the economy’s collapse, the latest season of Entourage starting off slowly and all the world’s other problems.

Jos Posnanski, stick to baseball — you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about when it comes to the gridiron.

Just because you can write well — and credit where credit is due, you both can do just that — doesn’t mean you can write well about the Chiefs.

Here’s the biggest thing; if Herm Edwards had of made some decent adjustments and not tightened up down the stretch like a nun’s holiest of holies, then the Chiefs would have never even been put in that position in the first place. Yet they were. Harm’s three consecutive three-and-outs gave the game away. For the third time in as many weeks, Harm snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Either this guy is tanking it or he is criminally mishandling leads. There’s no way he’s tanking games either, so you do the math.

Another thing I hated about Harm going for two is that he basically put Tyler Thigpen in a position where he lost the game for the Chiefs, or at least I’m pretty damn sure that’s how he felt after he threw that near pick to end the game. Why not take it into overtime, where you can give Thiggy Smalls more pressure-situation experience and a better chance at being a hero. We all know that most young quarterbacks really struggle inside the redzone, especially inside the 10-yard line. Tony Gonzalez‘s second touchdown was tipped by two Chargers, and it took every bit of Tony’s Hall of Fame skills to make that snag, so don’t give Tyler too much credit there. If we won the toss, there is no way the Chargers would have stopped our offense, as long as Herm allowed Chan Gailey to play call aggressively, which never seems to be the case late in tight contests. In that scenario, Thigpen leads us down the field, we kick a short field goal and Thiggy is the talk of the league. Now that would have been terrible for his confidence. Just terrible, I tell you!

If we lost the toss and, as a result, the game, we could have just blamed the loss on the defense being depleted by injuries. That way Thigpen’s psyche doesn’t get damaged. After all, developing a quarterback is the most crucial part of this rebuilding process. This year, it’s even more important than the final score.

I’m just sick and tired of fans and high-profile journalists alike patting Herm Edwards on the back. I expect that from “yes man” Bob Gretz, but the rest of you are better than that.

The NFL ruled today that Larry Johnson will serve a one game suspension for his recent off-the-field incident. Larry already has been deactivated for two weeks and will be deactivated once again this Sunday. The NFL has decided to suspend him for Week 10 when the Chiefs will face the San Diego Chargers.

Chiefs running back Larry Johnson was suspended for Week 10 of the NFL season by commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Johnson is not permitted on the team’s premises until Nov. 10. The suspension will cost him about $147,000, or one game check.

Carl Peterson felt that the suspension was fair and hopes that LJ can rebuild his life.

“We respect the decision of commissioner Goodell,” said Carl Peterson, president of the Kansas City Chiefs. “The NFL player conduct policy sets forth a set of standards that all NFL players, coaches and staff members must abide by. Upon the completion of his suspension we sincerely hope that Larry will be ready to return to the field for the Chiefs determined to make a positive contribution to our team and, with the assistance of the people around him, turn his life around.”

I think the Chiefs have done the right thing by sitting LJ for the last two weeks and this Sunday. I think LJ might have gotten a longer suspension if the Chiefs had taken no action. Let’s all hope that LJ will come back the new-and-improved LJ that we all know he can be for this team.

I recently had the opportunity to drive down I-70 late one night. As I passed Arrowhead, I noticed the dramatic changes brought on by construction. Changes such as spotlights, heavy-duty equipment and chain link fences. The more I reflected on the changes and this horrendous season, the more I began to realize that Arrowhead had become transformed into a prison for the Chiefs players and the fans.

Our first example of this is Tony Gonzalez. An all-time great and a lock for the Hall of Fame, Tony had the audacity to ask the warden (Carl Peterson) for parole. His lawyers and fans begged the warden to consider the facts; he had been a leader, a very productive inmate, and deserved parole on excellent behavior. Besides, it would open up prison space for a new inmate (a third-round pick). After getting everybody’s hopes up, the warden ultimately said no at the last minute. He said it would disturb the chemistry of the prison. So, there Tony sits, playing out his sentence until he becomes eligible for parole this spring.

Our second inmate is a curious example of imitation. Larry Johnson‘s running style has always been compared to the great Jim Brown. Unfortunately, LJ has chosen to emulate the great one’s relationship with the fairer sex off the field as well. He is soon to face head of the penile system (Roger Goodell) and a likely suspension. It is just a matter of time, unless he gets help, before he goes to a real prison.

Our third inmate resides about 30 miles from Arrowhead. Some people, including the Chief scribe of this site, have suggested he is the savior for the Chiefs franchise. What a ridiculous suggestion. Let’s take a young struggling franchise with issues on and off the field, and add the most controversial athlete of this generation–Micheal Vick. Adding Vick might set the franchise back another 5-10 years. Do the memories of the Falcons of the last two years have any meaning?

Our fourth and final inmate is an escapee–Kawika Mitchell. Deemed rehabilitated and no potential threat to society (the rest of the league), he was released. Since leaving Al-Carl-traz, he has won a Super Bowl and now is an integral component of the revamped Buffalo Bills. His replacement, Napoleon Harris, is now in a minimum security prison in Minnesota alongside Jared Allen, another former prisoner of the warden’s Rock.

What a dysfunctional prison!!! Is it the inmate’s fault? Not entirely. Ultimately, you have to blame the warden. As a famous man from Independence used to say–THE BUCK STOPS THERE! Time to bring in a new warden who can turn 1 Arrowhead Drive back into a respectable facility in time for it’s reopening in 2010.

During the open date and coming off the horrendous effort two Sundays ago, I have had a week to contemplate many issues regarding our beloved Chiefs. One of these is the approach this franchise has had regarding the most important NFL position hands down–quarterback.

During Carl Peterson‘s reign we have had a revolving door of rental quarterbacks. I have for convenience listed these starting QB’s in order of appearance and their order in the draft:

1989-1991 – Steve DeBerg (drafted by Dallas out of San Jose State, 10th round)
1992 – Dave Kreig (free agent out of Milton College, signed with Seattle)
1993-94 – Joe Montana (drafted by S.F out of N.D.in 1978, 93rd overall)
1995-1996 – Steve Bono (drafted by Minnesota out of UCLA, 6th round)
1997-2000 – Elvis Grbac (drafted by S.F. out of Michigan, 8th round)
1998 – Rich Gannon (drafted by New England out of Delaware, 4th round)
2001-2006 -Trent Green (drafted by San Diego, 8th round)
2007 - Damon Huard (free agent out of Washington)
2008 – Brodie Croyle (drafted out of Alabam, 3rd round)

Carl’s impatience with the QB position is only supplanted by his futility in drafting the position. In the 20 years he has been GM his drafted QB’s have thrown 23 interceptions and only 10 TD passes. Furthermore, none of his draftees have ever lead the Chiefs to a regular season victory. Here is Carl’s record:

1989 – Mike Elkins (2nd round out of Wake Forest)
1992 – Matt Blundin (2nd round out of Virginia)
1994 – Steve Mathews (7th round out of Memphis)
1995 – Steve Stenstrom (4th round out of Stanford)
1997 – Pat Barnes (4th out of California)
2005 - James Killian (7th out of Tulsa)
2006 – Brodie Croyle (3rd round out of Alabama)

What a legacy. Now you know why he wouldn’t trade up for Brady Quinn or Matt Ryan. He has a mental block when it comes to picking QB’s. Either that or he simply does not have the patience until now to suffer through a major rebuilding effort. Carl likes old, seasoned QB’s who can manage a game and allow the Chiefs to always be competitive. Great strategy if your goal is to avoid losing seasons and fill Arrowhead. Bad strategy if you want to win Super Bowls.

I want to leave you with one thought. The Chiefs have had one franchise QB, Lenny Dawson, and he lead them to their only Super Bowl appearance. Do you honestly think the Chiefs will make it with RENT-A-QB?

Yes, that’s him. The Glenn Dorsey. Swamp Thing. The Bayou Bruiser. Glenn Dorsey Glenn Hoss. The Chiefs‘ new $5 1 Million Dollar Man. Looking as big as that SUV he climbed out of, ready to put the franchise on his broad shoulders.

He already has more nicknames and more pressure than any of his fellow teammates, but he handles it all very well, doesn’t he? If Jared Allen was the One Man Gang, here’s to Dorsey becoming the One Man Army. That’s what he was down in Baton Rouge, where he helped bring home the Sears Trophy for the Bayou Bengals. If he is indeed the next Warren Sapp, today is the first day of something very special.

Kudos to Carl Peterson. He get’s his crown and seat on the throne back as far as we’re concerned, at least for the day. For those of you saying, gosh, $51 mil is a lot of change, consider a few things. First, Dorsey was arguably the best player on both a lot of experts’ and a lot of teams’ big boards. Second, quarterback Matt Ryan, a player many expected to be selected after Dorsey. signed for $20 mil more, despite being picked only two spots earlier. Peterson did an extremely commendable job, and it looks like Dorsey wasn’t greedy either. We are extremely lucky to have Dorsey, especially at this price tag. Defensive end Mario Williams got $60 mil a few years back, and Dorsey could have easily commended that had he been selected where he was projected to go.

I don’t know about all the other Addicts out there, but I’m about the happiest guy on the planet right now. Well, other than Gunther Cunningham and Tim Krumrie (and, damn, it’s great to finally read their quotes again). They may have lost a heat-seeking Allen missile, but they’ve replaced it with a hell-raising daisy Dorsey cutter and its “large lethal radius.” What a day!

I’m bumping a little classic rock–Canned Heat’s “On the Road Again,” The Who’s “Emminence Front,” Z.Z. Top’s “La Grange,” etc…hell, I’d get along with some of you old-timers–because I’m going into tailgate mode. For all intents and purposes, the Chiefs are one Glenn Dorsey signature away form having all their rooks signed and in camp on time. All three Brandons/ens are signed; Brandon got a new Carr, the other Brandon came off smelling like Flowers, and Branden Albert and his funny spelling got a fat contract. Sorry, Michael Merritt fans–not real concerned about the seventh-round tight end.

I am concerned about Dorsey, though. Check out what Double D wrote about Swamp Thing in the comments:

Well, if true, that’s great news about Albert but as I mentioned in another post we probably shouldn’t hold our breaths when it comes having Glenn Dorsey signed and in camp anytime soon. Joel Segal, (whose clientele includes no less than 2 holdouts last year – i.e., J. Russell & Levi Brown) is apparently choosing to “hold off” on talks with the Chiefs until he sees how much the other top 10 draft picks get. As somebody with a lot of years’ contract negotiation experience under my belt, I find that logic not only unappealing but completely unpersuasive. It feels like a stall tactic and in my opinion does not portend well. From where I sit, “hold off” sounds a little too much like “hold out.”

Long-time reader Jason had a similar report after listening to 610:

Also said that they offered a contract to GD in June and on Monday were told that numbers 6, 7 and 8 ALL HAVE to sign before ANY negotiations would take place (from Carl, of course taken with a grain of salt).

Add Joel Segal‘s tactics to King Carl‘s history and the fact that we had a first-round pick from LSU hold out for 10 days last year, and, yeah, it ain’t looking too good.

I think the key signing actually could be DT Sedrick Ellis. The Saints have been throwing some money around lately, and are serious about winning this year, so I expect him to sign soon. With Chris Long and Ellis signed, Dorsey’s value will pretty much be set. The Jets inking Vernon Gholsten wouldn’t hurt either. Then again, those two could be waiting on Dorsey to see if he’ll get a bigger deal than the fifth pick typically does, giving them a bargaining chip in the process. This could take a while.

Let’s hear it Addicts: how long will it take for Dorsey and Peterson to reach an agreement and get the Bayou Bruiser into camp?

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Thursday that the club has agreed to terms of a five-year contract with T Branden Albert. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.

The Chiefs have now agreed to terms with 10 of their 12 draft picks from the 2008 draft class.

Albert (6-5, 316) joined the Chiefs as the club’s second of two first-round selections (15th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft. He started all 37 games he appeared in at Virginia. He registered 94 knockdowns and 21 key blocks in touchdown resulting drives in his final two seasons. Albert became the fourth freshman offensive lineman in school history to start a bowl game, earning third-team freshman All-American honors.

Albert started all 13 contests for the Cavaliers in 2007, logging 54 knockdowns and key blocks on twelve touchdown resulting drives. During his junior campaign, he graded out at 83.54 blocking consistency, while serving as a team captain. He earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and was named third-team All-America by The NFL Draft Report and Associated Press.

Here’s what I wrote in the comments yesterday:

I wonder if a seventh rounder WILL even be signed if he hasn’t been inked by this point. I don’t see why the Chiefs wouldn’t sign him for the chump change he is due, but I also can’t figure out why it is taking so long. I doubt a seventh-rounder is going to hold out. I think things are stalling on the King’s end.

Ryan Brown from Home of the Chiefs was equally baffled:

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Carl Peterson and company just totally forgot they drafted Merritt? Isn’t that the only plausible explanation a 7th-round pick hasn’t signed yet?

So, what’s holding things up? A leg injury, apparently. From the Kansas City Star:

A fourth Chiefs pick, seventh-round tight end Michael Merritt, was also unsigned. Merritt has a leg injury that won’t allow him to practice when camp begins. The Chiefs won’t sign Merritt until he’s ready to practice.

Maybe Adam Teicher should play Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming movie of the same name instead of Robert Downey Jr. Hey, the hat would hide his bald dome perfectly! As for Merritt, one has to wonder if this leg injury will keep him from making the Chiefs’ 2008 roster. I suppose we’ll find out pretty soon.

Brace yourselves, Chiefs fans, you’re not going to like this. From ESPN:

Jeffri Chadiha: Last year, No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell staged a lengthy holdout and never was a factor during the season. Which rookie is most likely to fill that role in 2008?

Kansas City defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. This one is a no-brainer for two reasons. One is that Dorsey was arguably the best prospect in this year’s draft — a player capable of going No. 1 overall — until he slipped to the Chiefs at pick No. 5. The other factor is Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson. He is known for being a hard-line negotiator and I doubt that will change in the next few weeks.

Before we hit the panic button and worry about Ryan Sims part deux, let’s remember who we are talking about here. I’m paraphrasing, but before the draft one anonymous GM said that you’d have to sever one of Glenn Dorsey‘s limbs to keep him from playing. He’s tough and he’s got a great work ethic. Plus, Sims was widely considered a reach at six, and Dorsey is widely considered a steal at five. Also, Dwayne Bowe missed 10 days of camp last year, and we all know how he turned out. Deeeeeep breaths, everyone…

In other words, don’t expect Dorsey to be signed when training camp kicks off this Friday, but don’t expect the camp he misses to hold him back. I think as long as he doesn’t miss more than a week or so, we’ll be fine. This is why you penny pinched in free agency, Carl Peterson. Get him signed!

As many of our long-time readers know, I’m a huge Batman fan. After all, my name is only one letter off from being the exact same as TV’s Batman, Adam West. Coincidence? I think not. Anyway, The Dark Knight drops today, and fans are salivating over it like ESPN does Brett Favre. If you’re a Batman fan, be sure to check out my latest piece over at the Fan-Sided Blogs main site, where I cast the NFL’s wrong-doers, wackjobs and weirdos as Batman’s rogues gallery of supervillains.

That leads us to our Batman-inspired daily question: Is Chiefs GM Carl Peterson a misunderstood hometown hero or a public enemy who needs to have his free pass revoked? Is he the Crown Prince of Cheap? Or the Chiefs Crusader? I say a little bit of each, so maybe Two-Face is the best comparison? I’d hate to think that King Carl does a coin flip to decide his draft picks, but earlier this decade it couldn’t have been any worse even if he did.

You make the call on Carl–Dark Knight or Joker?

I hate to do it, because I feel it’s a non-issue, but I have to address the Chiefs‘ “Fan Code of Conduct”. Everyone from Mike Florio to MJD–don’t get me wrong, I like and read both–has chimed in on this topic. The popular interpretation of this code of conduct is that Carl Peterson, Mr. Consecutive Sellouts Streak himself, has suddenly decided that he needs to alter his winning two-decade fan formula. Really?

I love MJD’s convenient quotation of the actual rule:

“Standing and/or obstructing the view of other fans.”

Um, actually, MJD, here is the rule verbatim:

“Continual standing and/or obstructing the view of other fans.”

Is it just me, or does one word make all the difference in the world?

Zach, my old man and I have been going to Chiefs games at Arrowhead since the two of us were little boys. And, yes, we are the type of Chiefs fans who wouldn’t be caught dead sitting on 3rd and 4 late in the fourth quarter when our defense desperately needs a stop. Have we heard some grumbling about standing up or crowd noise? Once in a blue moon, maybe. But we’ve never, ever been asked to sit down or shut up when cheering. I have never even seen such a request at Arrowhead, even from staff.

The only times I’ve ever seen any intervention: A.) Someone is ridiculously intoxicated or rude, usually both; B.) An opposing fan or fan group is getting lynched or is about to. I will be the first to say that intervention is sometimes needed. I’ve seen Chiefs fans remove a Broncos fan’s hat and light it on fire. I’ve seen Philly fans nearly get murdered by a blood-thirsty Red mob. It gets a little too crazy up there in the stands sometimes.

At the same time, Chiefs fans are generally just as knowledgable and considerate as they are passionate. 99 times out of 100 they will stand at the appropriate times and consider the viewing experience of those around them, even fans of opposing teams. Chiefs fans know how to keep the NFL’s loudest stadium’s reputation intact without destroying the live experience for other fans.

I realize that the “Fan Code of Conduct” makes for good, humorous watercooler talk around the blogosphere, but it’s a non-issue. Trust me, neither Cheifs fans nor the front office want to change the atmosphere of Arrowhead. The Chiefs organization is actually just trying to protect that atmosphere.

Scoff, blow this off, call me a rumor whore. Whatever…

And let me first state that the likelihood of this happening is extremely slim, if not non-existent, but…

If the Brett Favre wants to come back and if the Green Bay Packers don’t want him, I do. I’m pretty sure Carl “Consecutive Sellout Streak” Peterson would be interested, too. After all, this is the same guy who once orchestrated a trade for an aging Joe Montana. This is the same guy who before this year never, ever invested a single season in a homegrown quarterback project. Can you, with a straight face, honestly say that you’d be upset if King Carl and the Chiefs delayed the Brodie Croyle project in favor of Favre?

This isn’t completely baseless speculation either. Check out what Adam Schefter said about our interest:

NFL Network’s Adam Schefter suggest the Jets, Chiefs, and Ravens as possible landing spots if the Packers decide to trade Brett Favre.

Some people are obviously sick of Brett’s comeback carosel, and others are simply chalking the buzz up to stupid ESPN wanting its boy back. And then, of course, Brett is denying this, even though rumor has it that he’s demanded his release. Personally, I kind of feel like Brett was pushed out by the Pack. I think the guy can still play, and if that is his desire then the Pack owes it to him to find a spot for him on an NFL field, either in Green Bay or elsewhere. After all, did any player ever give more to an NFL franchise? Still, all of this is contingent on the validity of the rumor that Favre is seriously interested in making a comeback. All of this could just be a result of ESPN’s rampant rumor mongering.

Nonetheless, I think we should definitely be interested in the unlikely event that Favre comes back and the Packers decide to trade him. I think he’s the one guy who could deal with our offensive line woes and make us a playoff contender, giving us at least a shot at winning eight, nine, maybe even 10 games.

What does everybody else think about the longshot proposition of the Chiefs trading for Brett Favre?

Can’t you hear Flava Flav blabbing on and on as the track hits? That was a Public Enemy reference, for those of you either too old or young to know Flav as anything but a full-time reality TV goon. Anyway, it’s no secret that most Kansas Citians dislike, to put it nicely, both “King” Carl Peterson and Jason “Jabba the” Whitlock. I think most K.C. sports fans, especially Chiefs fans, believe both have worn out their welcome. Also, the only thing bigger than both of their egos is Jabba’s waistline, and it’s hard to root for guys like that. The big question: if the two squared off in a WWE-style loser-leaves-town wrestling match, who would you want to lose and get the boot?

(By the way, visualizing the actual wrestling match is a trip. Can’t you see Carl wooing and strutting like Flair, then pleading his way out of a beating like a little bitch. Can’t you see Jabba doing some kind of Yokozuna/Earthquake I’m-too-fat-to-do-anything-remotely-athletic-so-I’ll-just-drop-my-fat-ass on you finisher? Pretty funny to actually play out in your head if you ask me.)

Jared Allen’s days with the Chiefs appear to be numbered.

Allen, the NFL’s reigning sack leader, told FOXSports.com that the Vikings and Buccaneers have held trade talks with the Chiefs and he anticipates a deal will get done prior to next week’s draft.

“It’s a situation that works out best for both sides,” Allen told FOXSports.com. “I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable draft picks to rebuild with.”

Allen said he is flying to Minnesota and has a visit set up with the Vikings by this weekend. He is tentatively scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay next week. The Jacksonville Jaguars had previously inquired with Allen’s camp as well.

The Pro Bowl defensive end is the Chiefs’ franchise player, but re-signing in Kansas City will be a problem as the team is looking to stockpile draft picks.

Allen said the two sticking points are working out terms of a deal with a new team and the Chiefs agreeing to compensation for a trade. A package of first- and second-round picks or one of first- and third-round picks in the upcoming draft have been discussed as possible terms. It’s unclear at this point what it will take to get the deal done.

This tells me that Carl Peterson is impossible to work with. He has failed all offseason to have guys he targeted to even visit Kansas City. Agents and players are sick of dealing with a man that has been in power for 20 years. Trading a guy like Jared Allen makes zero sense to me, but Adam I know feels a bit different about the situation. I just feel that tells me that no one in the NFL wants to work with this egomaniac and it is time for him to go (too bad this probably won’t happen until he steps down, which is basically like pulling an Al Davis)!

Eric will be doing a weekly feature called “Crane Damage,” and chipping in with his comments as always. Enjoy… (- Adam)

From Herm Edwards‘ press conference when he was hired with the Chiefs…he promised he wouldn’t change the offense.

“Q: You’ve been labeled a conservative coach. How do you approach this offense?”

Edwards: “Like I said before, it sounds like I’m conservative but as I keep saying it’s the players you play with. It might look conservative at times but I’m going to play to players’ strengths. I’m going to do that. These players on offense obviously have the ability to score. I’m not going to all of a sudden say you’re only allowed to score seven points a quarter. I’m not going to do that. I’m a football coach. I can coach anything that you give me: good players, great players, that’s what your job is as a coach.”

“Obviously, this offense has been prolific in the last three or four seasons. They can score points. I am not dumb. You don’t change things just to change. You don’t have to change. I think sometimes people would expect when a new coach comes in well he’s going to change this, he is going to change that. No, I am going to evaluate everything. Keep scoring 30 points I like that. That is a good thing.”

From the 2000, 2001, and 2002 drafts, only one player COMBINED is still on the team and he is on the way out…Greg Wesley

2004 – Jared Allen

2003 – Larry Johnson and Dustin Colquitt

5 drafts…4 players still on the team. Completely unacceptable.

I wasn’t a total Carl Peterson basher until now that I look back in time and really think about what’s wrong here and I gotta say it’s management. King Carl’s reign of terror is a moneygrab and needs to go. Take Herm with ya, Carl.

How do you think Carl Peterson feels about trading ex-Chiefs and current New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes now? Not only was he the unlikely hero — even though he was nearly the goat — of the NFC Championship, dude just went on The David Letterman Show. I mean, typically people like famous actors and presidential candidates appear on the show. King Carl, that is something that even you will never, ever do. When you have an ego as big as Carl’s, that has to hurt.

This shows that Peterson seems to be making the decisions rather than Clark Hunt. Do we really want the GM speaking for the owner? I am waiting to hear from Clark and it should becoming anytime soon.

Pretty interesting stuff here. If the Chiefs (basically Clark Hunt) do fire Carl Peterson, would Bill Kuharich be first in line to replace him? He was mentioned by Peter King as one of the top potential GM candidates out there (hat tip to reader Adam #2):

1. Scott Pioli, 42, New England. Smart. Ready, if he ever chooses to leave his good friend Belichick’s side, which he’ll likely have to do if he ever wants to have his football acumen recognized.

2. Chris Polian, 35, Indianapolis. Working under his prominent dad, Bill, Polian has risen to vice president of football operations and tried to learn lessons from top baseball execs. Tough and precocious.

3. Jeff Ireland, 38, Dallas. Thorough and ultra-prepared, with a reasoned opinion about every player he scouts. Unemotional and methodical.

Close: Philadelphia GM Tom Heckert, 40 (who might be available because Andy Reid has final authority with the Eagles); Baltimore director of pro personnel George Kokinis, 40; Green Bay personnel analyst John Schneider, 36.

Teams looking for more veteran guys could look at former Saints GM Bill Kuharich, 54, now the Chiefs’ VP for player personnel, or Chris Mara, 50, the Giants’ VP for player evaluation.

(Don’t even mention Pioli — we have no chance.)

Now, not only does Kuharich have experience as a GM, but he also has experience working with Hunt and head coach Herm Edwards. He’s also still relatively young for the position, and really cannot be blamed for Peterson’s follies since he’s only been with the Chiefs since 2000, and only been vice president of player personnel since February 2006.
