The Kansas City Chiefs have extended LB Brandon Siler’s contract by one year, according to Siler’s agent, David Canter.

The Chiefs picked up Siler in free agency last offseason from the San Diego Chargers. Siler was thought to be brought in to compete with Jovan Belcher for the starting MLB spot opposite Derrick Johnson. The Chiefs were also likely hoping that he could help bolster their goal line defense as that was an area he excelled in while in San Diego.

Siler never really got going for the Chiefs. He tore his Achilles in late August and was placed on IR.

With Siler set to come back, the Chiefs are pretty well set at the linebacker position. They have Pro Bowlers in Johnson and Hali, a solid player in Belcher and a potential starter in rookie Justin Houston. KC has Siler for depth, along with Andy Studebaker, Cameron Sheffield and Demorrio Williams. I wouldn’t expect Scott Pioli to tinker with this position group much, if at all, this offseason.

He has bigger fish to fry.

Bad news for linebacker depth for the Chiefs. Fortunately, the Chiefs have other players that can step up. Siler was still behind Jovan Belcher on the depth chart and there was no indication that he would be an upgrade over last year’s starter. He certainly added to the team’s depth though.

It looks as though one of the other young linebackers on the roster now have a chance to step up in make the team. We’ll keep you updated as this story develops.

In the history of the hated—from Al Davis to John Elway to Philip Rivers and everyone in between—the name Brandon Siler doesn’t exactly make the blood boil. Still, when it was announced that the linebacker, who had spent his entire four-year career with the San Diego Chargers, would be the newest Brandon on Kansas City’s defense, it was another small victory, and not only because Siler will hopefully fill a real need for the Chiefs. Our gain is a little sweeter when it’s also a rival’s loss.

Brandon Siler, being interviewed while changing out of his Chargers rags and into his new Chiefs uniform.

And that got me thinking about those times in recent Chiefs history when we’ve had the chance to see an old rival reborn in red and gold—and even wash away his sins with a game-changing or dominating performance against his old team. Even something as relatively mundane as a well-executed third-down conversion or defensive stop for short gain has an added ounce of gratification. There’s that feeling of “Yeah, that’s right—he’s with us now.”

So, in no particular order, here are a few of the notable former AFC West adversaries who saw the light (or were traded, or discarded by the forces of darkness and picked up as a steal in free agency, etc.) and used their football force for good.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Tribune is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed former San Diego Chargers linebacker Brandon Siler.

The Chiefs have not yet confirmed the move.

Siler is 6’2″, 239 and has been with the Chargers since 2007 when they drafted him in the 7th round of the NFL Draft. He played his college ball at Florida.

It appears as though Siler was a backup at ILB for the Chargers last year. He was also a key special teams contributor.

Here is some info from Rotoworld:

Just 25 years old, Siler made 12 starts over the past two seasons in San Diego, racking up 111 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions. Per Pro Football Focus’ ratings, Siler graded out positively as both an inside pass rusher and cover ‘backer last year. He also had seven special teams tackles in 2010 and should push for snaps immediately next to Derrick Johnson.

From rotoworld.com (share this quote)

I quickly spoke to Ernie Padon, editor of FanSided’s Chargers blog Bolt Beat. Here is what Ernie had to say on Siler:

Quick report. Celebrates with a gator chomp. Especially good against the run.. Especially in short and goal line situations. Clutch. Good against the run and just wanted to find a spot as a starter. Physical and tough player

Sounds like there is some pretty good value here. He can push Jovan Belcher for the starting role and help provide depth at the ILB position. Not a flashy move by Pioli but a solid one. At least this pickup isn’t over the hill.
