The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine is underway in Indianapolis and it seems everyone, from former Chiefs general managers Scott Pioli and Carl Peterson to former Colts GM Bill Polian, wants to weigh in on what Kansas City should or shouldn’t do with the No.1 pick n the 2013 NFL Draft.

Polian talked with Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star and told the Chiefs beat reporter that Kansas City general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid should be careful not to reach for a QB with the No.1 pick in the draft.

Like most other folks, Polian thinks going with the best available player, regardless of position, is the way to go.

What Polian did say was that the Chiefs have a great developer of QBs in head coach Any Reid.

Nobody develops quarterbacks better than Andy Reid. So rest assured you’ve got the right guy. Whatever decision he makes will be the right one. He’ll find a quarterback. It doesn’t need to be the first guy in the draft.

Now it all comes down to Andy Reid. A lot of Chiefs fans I’ve talked to really want KC to select QB Geno Smith No.1 overall. Yet most NFL folks we are covering seem to be indicating that the Chiefs should avoid taking a QB if he isn’t the best player on their board.

The good news, if you are in the “take a QB #1 camp” is that these same experts saying the Chiefs might want to avoid selecting a QB No.1, also seem to think the Chiefs will end up with productive QB play no matter what happens, thanks to Andy Reid.

I sure hope they’re right.

According to Pro Football Talk, Bill Polian will not be the next GM of the Kansas City Chiefs.

From PFT:

In recent weeks, former Bills, Panthers, and Colts G.M. Bill Polian has been linked in various rumors and speculation to the G.M. position in Kansas City, if/when it becomes open.

Of course, it’s not yet open. It possibly will be, if owner Clark Hunt decides to move on from Scott Pioli.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that, if Hunt hires a new G.M., it won’t be Polian.

From profootballtalk.nbcsports.com

I have to say I kind of buy this report. It appears as though Hunt is moving toward a situation in which his GM has less power. Polian, given all his success, strikes me as the kind of guy who is going to want to hire his own head coach. Hunt said yesterday that he will hire the new coach and that both the GM and coach will report to him.

There have been rumors flying around that Polian could replace Pioli. This is the first we’ve heard of a report saying that the move is unlikely.

It seems as though Hunt is going to make his move on a coach before making a final move on Pioli. Hunt said in an interview that he was beginning his search yesterday. We know he has at least one interview lined up for today.

Stay tuned.

As the end of the 2012 NFL season comes to a miserable end for the Kansas City Chiefs, the rumors of who could replace KC’s embattled GM Scott Pioli are beginning to heat up.

And that replacement could be former Colts executive Bill Polian.

We told you on December 8th that there was a rumor Polian could be heading to the Chiefs. That report came from the National Football Post.

Now we have another source.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is backing up the NFP report with one of his own.

As for those more well-known entities, several league sources expect Bill Polian to be a lead candidate in Kansas City if a regime change is made there, with he and his son Chris, the former Colts GM, able to run the franchise in a very hands-on manner, which is in line with how owner Clark Hunt traditionally delegates responsibility.

This would be a smart move for Clark Hunt. Polian has been involved in turning around three franchises during his time as an executive. As Gm of the Bills from 1986-1993, Polian took over a 2-14 team and took them to three straight Super Bowls. Buffalo lost all three of them and Polian was fired.

Polian emerged again as the GM of the new Carolina Panthers franchise. He took the team to the NFC Championship game in only its second year of existence.

Polian left the Panthers to become the President of the Indianapolis Colts in 1997. The Colts had the #1 overall pick in the draft that year and Polian selected none other than Peyton Manning.

Polian began grooming his son Chris in 1998 when he made him Director of Pro Personnel in Indy. Chris was later promoted to GM.

Hiring Polian would be a brilliant move by Hunt. He’d be getting an experienced executive and personnel man but at the same time, he’d be getting the younger Chris Polian as well. Polian senior was 69 when the Colts fired him in January. He likely won’t be with the Chiefs for long but he certainly could stick around long enough to get the franchise back on track.

The Chiefs make sense for Polian as well. The roster has plenty of talent, the team has ample cap space and more importantly, they will likely hold the #1 pick in the draft. It would be a great opportunity for Polian to take his already cemented legacy and dip it in gold.

The good news for the Chiefs is that if Clark Hunt is indeed interested in Polian that he will be able to hire him whenever he wants. Since Polian isn’t under contract with any other NFL teams, he’s a free agent so to speak. If the Chiefs want to move on from Pioli, they’ll need to move quickly to give their new GM the time he needs to have a solid offseason.

What do you think, Addicts? Will Clark Hunt hire Bill and Chris Polian?

Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli hasn’t even lost his job yet but that likely won’t stop rumors about his potential replacement from leaking out.

And we’ve got our first leak.

According to The National Football Post, former Colts Gm Bill Polian could be the frontrunner to land in KC:

Look for former Colts executive Bill Polian to get back into the league after the season. The grapevine says the Chiefs are the frontrunners for his services, should they part ways with Scott Pioli. Polian got his NFL start in Kansas City as a pro scout in 1978, so it would be fitting if he ended his career there.

I’d take this report with a grain of salt, mostly because there is no one person reporting it. There is no byline on the story. The column is called “Friday Buzz” and comes with the tag “Intel, Obeservations and Whispers from The NFP Insider Network.” I’m not sure what that means.

Still, NFP has a good reputation so we can’t totally discount this either. If Polian is interested in getting back into football, KC would be a logical choice, especially if the team is going to have a top draft pick.

What do you think, Addicts? Do you want Bill Polian to be the new GM?
