The Kansas City Chiefs need to fire GM Scott Pioli and hire Bill Cowher.

The sooner, the better.

I know, I know. We go through this every time the Chiefs need a need a new coach.

But this time, it’s different.

If Cowher does indeed want to coach again, there isn’t a more attractive option than the Kansas City Chiefs.

There is just one problem: Scott Pioli

We’ve already seen evidence that the environment Pioli has created at Arrowhead has frightened away qualified coaching candidates and free agents. Why did Jeff Fisher only briefly meet with the Chiefs before leaving the meeting early? Why wouldn’t Peyton Manning even visit Kansas City?

It is well know that Manning chose Denver because of his comfort level with John Elway. He chose the Broncos over more talented teams. One could argue that Manning would have been much better off with the Chiefs or even the Cardinals. Fit was clearly more important to Manning than talent and it is obvious that he never even considered Kansas City as a possible destination.

Guys like Bill Cowher and John Gruden likely feel the same way. If and when these gentleman return to coaching, they’re likely going to want a lot of control. That is something they’d never get working for Pioli.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was in a tough spot last offseason. He allowed Pioli to convince him that the problem in Kansas City was Todd Haley. While that may be partially true, it takes two to tango and Pioli and the environment he’s created was thoroughly exposed in Kent Babb’s Arrowhead Anxiety story. After that, should we really be surprised that Manning and Fisher wanted no part of the Chiefs?

It is clear now that Hunt’s best path forward is to cut ties with Pioli, not just because the Chiefs are losing so much but because of why they are losing so much. Hunt is smart enough to realize he has a team full of talent that is under-performing on the field because of a lack of leadership.

That’s on Romeo Crennel and it’s on Scott Pioli.

Cutting ties with Pioli will send a message to the Bill Cowhers and John Grudens of the world that Hunt is ready to turn over control of the organization to someone new.

Bill Cowher has been talking about the Chiefs an awful lot lately. Two weeks ago on the CBS pre-game show, Cowher gave a bold prediction that the Chiefs would end up going 10-6 and would make the playoffs. After the Chiefs lost on Sunday, Cowher again mentioned how much talent he thinks the Chiefs have.

I’m not saying Cowher is giving a wink-wink to Clark Hunt but I am saying his professional opinion is that the Chiefs shouldn’t be nearly as bad as they are this season.

If a smart and experienced coach like Cowher can see that then he should be able to see the opportunity that will be presented should Hunt decide to give Pioli his walking papers this season. The Chiefs look well on their way to a top 10 pick. With a number of excellent QB prospects expected to be available in this draft, the Chiefs should be able to snag one of them. Cowher would be walking into a familiar environment (he is a former Chiefs defensive coordinator) with a young and talented roster and a high draft pick.

Remember, Cowher had plenty of success in Pittsburgh but he didn’t get his Super Bowl ring until he got his franchise QB in Ben Roethlisberger.

Cowher is the perfect fit for Kansas City. He brings the leadership the Chiefs are sorely missing, he has the experience to take over the Chiefs’ 3-4 defense and make it great and he’ll likely have the draft pick he needs to get KC its first franchise QB since Len Dawson.

To those worried about the dreaded “rebuilding” word, you need not worry. The KC roster doesn’t need rebuilding.

The KC front office and coaching staff, does.

Whether it is Cowher, Gruden or someone else, Clark Hunt needs new a new sheriff in town.

According to Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Bill Cowher has already interviewed with high-ranking officials in San Diego to become the next head coach of the Chargers.

I was told this week by an in-the-know source with intimate knowledge of the San Diego sports scene that Cowher already had “an interview’’ with high-ranking people inside the Chargers organization who were gauging his interest and that he expressed his interest in the job should Norv Turner be fired.

There have been conflicting reports about Cowher’s plans now for some time. He has said publicly that he enjoys working in TV and that he has no plans to return to coaching at this time. However, potential coaches often say things like that to avoid creating a media frenzy.

Some have Cowher pegged as a candidate to land in New York should a vacancy open up with the Giants.

As for the Chiefs, Cowher has a past in KC but most believe that he will want power over personnel decisions, something Scott Pioli is unlikely to give him.

One thing is for sure, I’d rather Cowher not land in the AFC West, or the AFC for that matter. The Giants sound like a good fit to me.

Here goes:

Source: Yardbarker.com

#10:

Al Davis has actually been dead for 12 years but is being kept alive using a secret formula he developed in the 70′s.

It consists of the tears of a baby, the ground up bones of a kitten and a lock of John Madden’s hair. Al puts all this in a blender, adds ice and goats milk and drinks it every morning. For some reason, this concoction keeps his heart beating but it doesn’t keep him from decomposing before our very eyes. As long as John Madden keeps drinking whatever the hell it is he is taking to ward off death, Al will be ok.

Wow.

Harm Edwards has turned losing into an art form. For loss-aficionados, today was a thing of beauty. I wonder if Harm can take up painting because at this point, he might be able to make serious bank at Lloyd’s of London if he can paint as well as he can lose.

21-10 with 1:13 to go. Final Score 22-21, Chargers. Its been a while since I have seen a team that looked so sure to win, dominating for three quarters, only to collapse and get shut out in the 4th. We led 21-3 in the third quarter!

Will the Connor Barth believers please raise your hand? Thanks, now show yourself out.

D-Bowe! You’re my man, and you took a big shot- but you gotta hang onto the ball son.

Harm, what can I say. If we were trying to lose, that was a thing of beauty. It really was. I told my old man with 6 minutes left that I could see us losing this one. He agreed, and we couldn’t stop laughing as it went down. I mean really, at this point that’s all you can do is have a hearty Christmas chuckle at Herm and Company’s ineptitude.

All excuses go out the window at this point. Rookies, young team etc. Yeah we missed a few kicks, a few drops, a pick — whatever…that’s football. At some point blowing big leads has to fall on the coaching staff. That’s where the buck stops. Its not Tony’s fault, or LJ or Thiggy or D-Bowe – (well, maybe D-Bowe)…or Carl or Clark or the fans. It’s the coaching.

I want to take a win anytime, but at this point…why get upset over the loss? — outside of wanting to get rid of this cancerous loser Herm Edwards that is. Even when he is winning he loses! Tampa, 21 point lead, this debacle today…all we can do is laugh and hope Clunt comes to his senses.

I wanted to get this up and let people vent on the comments before we get some post up tomorrow trying to look at the bright side. There is no bright side to this loss, aside from keeping and bettering our draft position. My God, what is it going to take before we can get you homers to call for Herm’s head?

My advice to Clark, next week, take a good look at the empty seats and repeat “HARM” in your head 50 times because that’s how they will continue to look next season. Even when “the plan” takes effect, how is this coach going to maintain a lead? He can’t won’t and don’t. Please spend some of that jack you saved this year at our expense and hire Bill Cowher. I’m begging you, the fans are begging you and we are the ones paying the tab. Be like Nike and “JUST DO IT”

WIN WITH THE CHIN ’09

Either Jason Whitlock reads the Addict, watches the NFL Network or this is just a helluva coincidence. From FOX Sports:

5. The wrestling match for Bill Cowher better include the Kansas City Chiefs.

There are already rumors that the Browns have interest in the former Pittsburgh head coach who now works on CBS’s studio show.

This is the second year of Cowher’s “retirement.” I don’t see it lasting a third season. Kansas City is the ideal location for Cowher to return. The Chiefs have a general manager/president, Carl Peterson, who needs to be removed and a head coach, Herm Edwards, who foolishly jumped on Peterson’s sinking ship and decided to build a lifeboat (rebuilding) three years after taking the captain’s chair.

Cowher worked in Kansas City under Marty Schottenheimer. The Chiefs are renovating their stadium and are losing season-ticket holders as you read this. Cowher would inject some life into the franchise and fill the new stadium while the team recovers from Peterson’s incompetence.

Cowher is a perfect fit for Kansas City.

Glad to have you on board, Big Sexy, even if you did piggyback onto our idea (minus the Vick). Getting this out there in the MSM certainly can’t hurt its chances of coming into fruition.

I loved this morning’s “The Fanatic Focus,” but for me the only step in the right direction is to end the Herm Edwards-Brodie Croyle era at the end of this season. I’d prefer to do it now, but keeping Herm-Brodie as the lame duck ticket for the rest of the season might make the Chiefs the favorites to pick first in the 2009 draft.
Rash decision? Not hardly. I’ve been wanting to come out and publicly denounce, reject, whatever the Herm-Brodie combo since last year, but buckled under reader pressure until I had more ammo. I now have that ammo. In relationships, we always have that “it’s over” moment. That moment that we desperately avoid when we want things to work out, but eventually can’t. While watching game film today (I had to stop because the pain was so agonizing), I realized that I’ve already had those moments with both Brodie and Herm, despite the season still being in its infancy. I’ve known all along that both were longshots, but deep down I convinced myself that there was still a shot. I can no longer do that after what I’ve seen.

George Costanza always said “it’s not you, it’s me.” Well, Herm, Brodie, it’s not me, it’s you. I’ve tried to convince myself over the past two-plus years that you guys are the duo who will take the Red and Gold back to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, I’m not a very good liar. I now know unequivocally that this project is doomed, and here’s how I know…
