We all want to believe we know what we’re talking about. We want to trust our instincts, feel secure in our football intelligence, and know that our years of watching this team give us an insight into how it operates. That should be how it works, right? And to some extent, it does. There are definitely varying levels of Chiefs knowledge, and football knowledge in general. But no matter how much we think we know, or how smart we think we are, we’re still wrong all the time.

And it isn’t just us. Talking heads, announcers, journalists, nobody can predict game outcomes with any consistency. Experts’ preseason predictions are inevitably laughable. Even GMs, those few choice slimeballs at the absolute top level of the football hierarchy, make horrendous mistakes every year. The draft has been in existence for over 70 years and its still a total crapshoot. Check out the car Tyson Jackson is driving if you don’t believe me.

Everyone loves to shout it from the rooftops when they get something right. Understandable. But its important to acknowledge the other side too. I am wrong about many things every season. The IWW Awards is my annual acknowledgment of that. So without further ado, here are my biggest Chiefs gaffes from the year 2010:

There is a report out from Tampabay.com on the details of the Alex Magee trade:

We’ve learned the details of Tuesday’s trade that brought defensive end Alex Magee to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bucs gave the Kansas City Chiefs a fifth-round pick for Magee, a 2009 third-round choice. But the Bucs also received a sixth-round pick back, making the net cost of the trade very little.

Magee, who will wear No. 97, will be a little bit of a project for the Bucs who are desperately trying to increase their dormant pass rush.

It isn’t really much of anupgrade but it is still an upgrade. Scott Pioli seems to value 5th round draft picks. You may remember he made very good use of two 5th round picks during last year’s draft.

He used one in order to trade back into the 3rd round to draft Tony Moeaki and he used the other to draft Kendrick Lewis.

This trade may seem insignificant now but if Pioli can work his 5th round magic again next year, it could pay off big time. Then again, Magee was a 3rd round pick himself…but we;ll ignore that for now. =)

As Mr. Beames reported last night, my boy Alex Magee has been traded to the Bucs. Pioli’s secret police are going to do their best to keep the details from the public as long as possible (strategy!), but my guess is we didn’t get much for him. I mean, he isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire right now.

I actually did like Magee. I know it must’ve seemed like a joke at times, but I thought the kid had potential. Don’t forget, he had twice as many sacks as our entire starting line last season. In what, one thousandth the snaps? How is a pass rush starved team not interested in that? How were no fans interested in that? I started a Magee fan club, the Mageeks, and the only members were a commenter named Dusty who has since disappeared and a friend (AA commenter Sesame Cake) who I suspect joined out of pity.

I need to stop getting behind young defensive linemen, because it inevitably means the end for them in a Chiefs uniform. First Eddie Freeman, then Jimmy Wilkerson, Jared Allen, Turk McBride, and now Magee. It’s like all my boys went away to college and I stayed behind to work at Red Lobster. Sure, I might get 20% off select menu items, but at what cost?

When Scott Pioli drafted Alex Magee in the 3rd round of the 2009 NFL Draft, I was pretty sure it meant the end of Glenn Dorsey in Kansas City. The Chiefs were switching to a 3-4 defense and at the time, most thought Dorsey would not be the best fit to play DE in that scheme. Rumors swirled all through training camp that Dorsey was on the trading block. This may very well have been true. From what I understand, the Chiefs were not initially sure of how well Dorsey would handle the transition from tackle to end.

The start of the season came and Dorsey was still a Chief. As the season went on, his play seemed to improve and coach Todd Haley mentioned on a couple of occasions how happy the Chiefs were with his progress. When Dorsey was injured and missed the Cleveland game, KC got torched on the ground, leading many Chiefs fans to the conclusion that Dorsey was more important to the Chiefs ability to stop the run than he may have seemed.

Now the Chiefs are about to embark on a new season and yet, the Dorsey rumors remain. Some think he will be staying at end. Others think he should still be traded. Then there are a few, including former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards who think he play nose tackle.

“He can do that,” said Edwards taking with Steven St. John of 810 Sports back on April 27th. “There’s no question. Yeah, he can do that. He can hold up on the double team. There’s no doubt.”

At a press conference in March, Nick Wright of 610 Sports asked Pioli point blank if Dorsey might move to the nose tackle position.

Pioli’s response and more, after the jump.

Thanks to a timely tweet by Chiefs first round draft pick, Eric Berry, I was reminded that KC’s rookies will be arriving at Arrowhead today and will start Rookie Mini Camp tomorrow. This is a time for the coaches to get a look at their new guys, on their own terms. It is also an opportunity for the coaching staff to mine their undrafted free agents for a potential diamond in the rough.

What can we expect from Mini Camp? I took a look at some reports from last year’s camp to get an idea of what the new meat can expect when they hit the field tomorrow.

Day 1 will serve as sort of a mini combine. The players will get measured, weighed and put through the paces. They’ll do some bench presses, vertical jumps, raw jumps and 40-yard dashes.

Haley and company will also likely test the rookies by throwing a lot of information at them and watching how well they respond. Last year, after day 1, Haley was quoted as saying that the rookie’s heads were “spinning.”

It makes sense that the Chiefs want see how quickly the rookies can pick things up and get to work. Day 1 is important for the new guys as day 2 is structured sort of like a training camp practice.

More on day 2 after the jump.
