The retirement of Mike Vrabel sparked a thought in my mind. When you have a young, improving team, it’s easy to fall into a trap. That is, assuming that things are always on an upswing. The Chiefs really don’t have many key older players and a nice core of good, young talent. The future looks bright, but all is rarely well. I started to speculate. What positional grouping will take a step backwards this year? Yes, I know it’s not a comfortable question to ask. However, to be a fair and realistic fan, it needs to be asked. One positional group came to mind immediately. This group in particular is overrated due to the soft schedule of last year and the special talent of a particular player. What is that group? My thought is after the jump.

Veteran teams, without a lot of turnover are teams that will survive the lockout better than younger teams going through a transition. Teams that are bringing in a new head coach or changing offensive or defensive schemes are teams that are more affected by the lockout. How do the Chiefs rate on these measures?

Under the current 32 team, 2 conference, 8 division format which has been in place since 2002, exactly 37.5% of NFL teams make the playoffs each year. Statistically speaking, since 2002, roughly half of the teams that make the playoffs end up making a return trip to the playoffs the following season. In fact, this latter statistic has held up pretty well ever since the NFL went to the 12 team playoff system that started in1990. However, some teams have been a lot more consistent and successful than others at making these repeat performances; the Colts lead the pack in that category with 8 repeat appearances since 2002.

Another scenario with special relevance for the Chiefs that I thought it might be interesting to consider is how often teams that were last in their division one year, made it to the playoffs for at least two consecutive years thereafter? The answer, along with a few corollary thoughts right after the jump.

I sat breathlessley with my buds Patrick and Merlin as we waited for the 2011 Kansas CIty Chiefs schedule to be posted. For me, the player-owner disagreement was momentarily forgotten.

Three prime time games, Patrick announced! Two Monday night games! The league had confidence in the Kansas City Chiefs once again it would seem. As I breathlessly scrolled down the regular season schedule on NFL.com my mind wandered.

Only one September home game, hmmmm. The guaranteed warmth of the Chiefs vs Bills would be reserved for my girlfriend and I. The October Vikings matchup would go to the most loyal of buds who made the trek with me in the hard to be a fan months of 2008. (more…)

As our owner continues to wage battle to preserve our 2011 season, my third payment of six to the Kansas City Chiefs organization is on its way. It’s especially bad timing for my wallet, and for my outlook on the state of the NFL in general. Don’t get me wrong I love football, and love the Kansas City Chiefs. But it sure feels like the NFL and the players are biting the hand thats feeding them.

First of all the 18 game season seems to be no longer a possibility largely due to player opinion. Once again two of my ten season tickets are virtually worthless.

Second, the upward momentum of several seasons of rebuilding now appears to be in danger of flatlining once again amidst player and owner dissatisfaction.

So what am I doing about it? I’ll tell you. I called this morning and cancelled my order for a full season of red parking passes. I showed ‘em.

The effect was obvious as the sales rep yawned and told me she had removed the purchase from my account, and politely asked me if there was anything else she could help me with. “There damn sure is” I thought to myself. But its like complaining to the high school kid behind the counter at McDonalds about the prices.

Still, I can’t be the only loyal fan voting with my pocketbook can I?

I’d cancel my season tickets all together but like an Ozark Mountain meth head, I’m addicted to my second row seats at Amen Corner.

But what else can I do? What can you do? What can we all do?

Sound off Addicts! Let me hear your thoughts on the very real threat of no 2011 season!

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2010 season is over, and so our thoughts turn to making the Chiefs a better team in preparation for 2011. Usually in the offseason there are two main sources for NFL teams to gain players: Free Agency and the NFL Draft. If NFL labor negotiations stall, and a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is not reached, then there won’t be a free agency period. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, I think that this is a period which is necessary for their continued success.

The first reason I think it is necessary is that the Chiefs are still a team in recovery. Even though we made it to the playoffs this year, we are not so far removed from our losing ways that we couldn’t easily fall back into them. While there is no question that the Chiefs are a better team than two years ago, there are still some problems that exist with the Chiefs.
