Alrighty Chiefs fans, it’s time to play…. “The Chiefs 2013 Re-Mockable Mock Game.”

Take the following picks I’ve made, highlight them, copy them and paste them into your comments window… then you can replace the prospects with your own choices… even if it’s just one or two. However, you have to justify your selection in that round and say why it was better. To do that, just link a video or a review of that player or heck… just give us a sentence with your analysis: that works too.

Copy/Paste the following to play The Re-Mockable Mock Game

Round 1: QB Geno Smith West Virginia
Round 2: ILB Manti Te’o, 6-2, 255
Round 3a: C Travis Frederick, Wisconsin, 6-4, 338
Round 3b: CB, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Connecticut, 6-1, 192
Round 4: QB, E.J. Manuel, Florida State, 6-4, 237
Round 5: RB, Le’Veon Bell, Michigan State, 6-2, 227
Round 6: TE, Nick Kasa, Colorado, 6-6, 271
Round 7: DE, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Notre Dame, 6-4, 300

First, read my 7 round selections, breakdown and reasoning:

As has become customary for Chiefs fans over the years, we begin fantasizing about what could be, and so, many of us have already mentally calendar hopped to the 2013 draft with hopes full bore.

My fantasy is drafting an elite quarterback –Geno Smith, specifically — but, it will likely take a blockbuster trade to get that accomplished.

For the Chiefs to climb that volcano and drop the ring of power — the power that losing has held over this organization — into the lava of Mordor, they’ll need someone young to lead them — a franchise-caliber QB — one who will guide them for a decade or more.

To do that the Chiefs will need to take a big risk. It won’t be easy. Risks never are. In this case the risk will be to trade key players and/or high round picks to gain control of the first pick in the draft.

Gaining the first pick is no guarantee that the Chiefs will end up with a franchise QB. However, it is now a move the Chiefs must make.

I wanted to put this draft together while simulating the draft day process as much as possible, except, no trades. To do that I created a few rules, 1) focus on team needs, 2) rank the available players the way that team’s coach and GM might rank them, 3) once the pick is made there’s no going back later and switching it out and 4) I ignored any future personal desires to place a prospect with a team.
A little discovery surfaced during this process: as players came off the board, the position that a player plays, becomes a greater need, making one less player at a time unavailable at that position. This is not about a “run on position players.” In this draft, the tenth best OT is ranked #117 while the tenth best CB is ranked #74 (according to CBS Sports). This varies in different draft years of course but, if you’re a team who needs CBs and OTs (and who doesn’t), if you have taken a CB with an earlier pick… finding a good OT will be much tougher later because there are going to be fewer good ones available, say, within the space of 100 picks. So, the drafting of one position, creates a greater need for those players, especially if there are fewer of those players available and more teams needing them. Particularly the good ones.
So, because teams need OTs they may be willing to reach to take one earlier than they’re ranked, creating an even greater need for a position player than the pool of OTs has available. Consequently, as a drafter, you find yourself in the position (as I believe many teams will be in, during this draft) of reaching to take a player who is ranked much lower than the spot they’re drafting. Having now reviewed all 32 team’s needs… there will most certainly be drama centered around OTs in this draft because most teams need at least one.

An truss me, dere aint enuf ta gose aroun.

There’s a reason for that: although many teams avow to not, “draft for need”… as much as they say they draft the “best player available”… the reality is that those teams who draft excellent players to positions that are already filled on their roster aren’t creating a “competition” so much as they are “double-paying” at that position (something I’m sure GMs and owners are more aware of and less likely to do, than coaches). However, see it from a coach’s point of view too: why draft another good player to play the same position you already have a solid starter at when you could draft someone to play another position where there is not even one good enough to play that position? Especially if you’re team is in the building process.

Enjoy mocks? So do I. Making and reading. However, many mockers muck it up by including a number of, what seems like, typical mistakes: mock moves that don’t work, or make sense.

So, you’re thinking, “Gee, I’d sure like it if my team could draft ____________ (so-and-so).” And, you begin to write it all down but, somewhere, something doesn’t fit.

To begin with, there is no one set of right answers when making a mock.

I never have seen anyone make a mock that was completely right for even the whole first round, much less seven rounds. The odds are beyond astronomical. So, these mocks are mostly meant to be entertaining. Besides, the so-called experts on NFL Network, ESPN or CBS Sports change their own mocks as often as I change lanes on the way to work each morning.

I’ve seen and read many a mock that doesn’t make sense for one reason or another. Please don’t take it personally. I’ve gone back and reread some of my own mocks and they didn’t make sense either.

Here are the top 8 mistakes I’ve seen when fans go assigning prospects to teams.

8. Copycatting
That’s a nice word for plagiarism. Not that anyone is going to track you down for agreeing with a particular talking head or NFL guru. We all do it: identifying with one expert more than another. But, when it comes to creating your own mock it will mean more to you if you actually watch some game tape on a prospect and form your own opinions. Rate a prospect by comparing them to other prospects playing the same position. Compare the prospect to other players already in the league. Then, your mock will become, too legit to forget. It may be a copycat league but that’s not an invitation to go ditto heads on us.

Bottom line: do your own homework (should have listened to your teachers in school).

7. Predicting Trades
There are a high percentage of trades made involving actual draft picks each year but, doing so in a mock adds too many elements of change that can get quickly out of control making a mock unrealistic. I read a mock recently that showed how the Colts could re-sign Peyton Manning and the Chiefs would trade for him. That’s just crazy talk because everyone knows that if the Chiefs are going to trade for an elite QB it will be Tom Brady. Besides the Patriots would probably love to have Cassel back.

Bottom line: keep the element of trades out of your mocks.

6. Taking a Whiz
No. Not that kind of “taking a whiz.” I mean… falling for a combine whiz. Every year a handful of prospects show up at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis and they “wow” the crowds. NFL Network repeatedly highlights those best performers and suddenly, those prospects, who had mediocre seasons, are transformed into the next best solution to your team’s problems. The challenge here is sorting out the actual phenoms who fly up the draft board and deserve to be taken high in the draft from the rest of the sodas who are all fizz and no taste. Players like the Giants’ Jason Pierre-Paul or the Cowboys’ DeMarcus Ware turned out to be excellent. They deserved to be taken seriously.

This year Dontari Poe would like that honor but, I’m not a believer. I liked him for one week during the combine. However, I appreciate good game tape too and his is not good. Not good at all. Even if he was playing division-I ball, but, he didn’t.

Bottom line: remember that your first round pick is always “franchise defining.” So, try to control your impulse to take someone chancy.

5. Getting Man Crushed
Ever get a Man Crush? Sometimes a mocker gets too locked in on their wish-list prospect and abandons all reason in the process. Most of us has a player we’d just love to see the Chiefs pick up. Sometimes we hold on to that player for the length of a whole draft season and never give up hope of the Chiefs taking them. Sometimes even longer. I still hear fans calling for Aaron Curry. Remember how Chiefs fans clamored for LB Ray Maualuga? I heard a fan still talking him up just last month, saying, “We should have taken him.” I can recall falling in love with Taylor Mays myself and not letting go until shortly before the draft. I’ve read a number of bloggers who still believe in Vontaze Burfict even though some NFL analysts are now saying he may not even be drafted at all.

When I was a kid, there was this 3 year old who lived down the street. He’d come toddling past our house and stop… hug a car… or a tree… and each time he’d say, MINE! … MINE! Same problem here. I know we can get attached to people, places and things but, you’re going to have to tell yourself, “It’s alright… if I let go… I won’t die. It’s all right… if I let go… I won’t die.” Please repeat that eleven times before bedtime while, listening to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”… and your mock should turn out just lovely. No emotional damage. My guarantee.

Bottom line: I have no real advice to give here because I’m afraid those who have this specific attachment disorder will grow too fixated upon this advice… and never let it go… and I just can’t make that kind of commitment.

4. Schlepping Replacements
It happens all the time. I decide to take a chunk of time reading a long list of mock drafts and there it is: the pick that makes no sense and appears to be a filler. A pick that has no rhyme or reason. The mocker is filling in their mock slot with an unknown prospect just so they can get to the part of the mock they truly care about.

I understand. It’s a difficult task keeping up with the Joneses… knowing what your division rivals are doing each day of the week. The larger stories of course make their way to PFT, Yahoo and other sports outlets. However, attempting to really understand what’s going on with another team’s roster… is a bit tougher.

When most mock bloggers reach this point in their mock, they tend to take the next player listed on some web site’s prospect ranking list. Often these, quick-way-out selections, don’t even take into account the GM or HC’s past patterns or previous picks.

Bottom line: try to resist “filling in the blanks” when making a mock.

3. TN and BPA… Gone Wild
Plenty of mock drafts focus on the best player available (bpa) but, ignore team needs (tn). Other mocks often focus on team needs and neglect the best player available. Perhaps they take care of a team need in one round but, then neglect them altogether with the rest of their picks.

Many GMs and HC tout the drafting of the bpa when the situation often prevails for the drafting because of need. General managers often trade up, or down, the draft board to get into the perfect position to take the best player available, at the correct ranking for a player who happens to be their highest team need.

Many team executives claim to be selecting players only from a best player available (bpa) philosophy but, I’ve yet to see a team really do that. Great drafting is a combination of both.

Bottom line: balance your draft selections based on team needs and the best player available.

2. Strange, Bad Partners
Some fans try to make a round peg fit in a square hole by forgetting to match a player’s size, strength and abilities with the position a prospect will be asked to play for a specific team. Mockers often ignore the offensive philosophy or defensive scheme that a particular prospect performs well in… and neglects to consider those same elements in the team he’s matching the prospect with.

It’s often thought that certain famous football players would never have been very good had they played for a different team in a different system. I’ve even hear that about Joe Montana, one of my favorites. Would he have done as well if he played for the Chicago Bears or the Houston Oilers?

Bottom line: matching player talent and team systems help make a great mock… and draft!.

And now… the number one mistake mockers make…

1. Reaching, Reaching, Reaching
It’s easy to spot a mock like this. The mocker reaches for players not even meant to go in that round and the mocker’s team just so happens to get every pick they wish they could get. No, I’m not talking about the “Raiders” but, it’s a tribute to Al that I mention them here.

This is akin to “location, location, location” in real estate, and location is everything in the draft as well. Pick a player too late or too early and your mock takes on the feel of a ten year old throwing darts.

That’s not a mock… that’s a mockery. Basically because at that point your mock becomes a total fantasy. I have a friend whose mother told them that you have babies by ”wishing and hoping and praying.”

A mock that is frequently “reaching”… falls in that same category of thinking.

Bottom line: make not a mockery of thy mock.

____________

My 2012 First Round Mock

1. Colts- QB Andrew Luck

Big surprise.

2. Redskins- QB Robert Griffin III

Bigger surprise.

3. Vikings- OT Matt Kalil

Kalil will become the NFL prototype.

4. Browns- QB Ryan Tannehill

It’s a QB-copia… and did the Browns really over reach? That would be a no.

5. Bucs- CB Morris Claiborne

Perfect case of matching wits.

6. Rams- WR Justin Blackmon

Fisher is feeling smug.

7. Jags- DE Quinton Coples

Can’t pass on the next Julius Peppers.

8. Dolphins- OT Riley Reiff

Best way to get players to “want” to play in Miami: draft them.

9. Panthers- Anywhere in the front 7/Melvin Ingram

Can’t pass on the next… Melvin Ingram. He’s a phenom.

10. Bills- DL Michael Brockers

Bills make defense, priority one.

11. Chiefs- OG David DeCastro

Pioli said he would fix the OL this off season. Consider it fixed.

12. Seahawks- ILB Luke Kuechly

Kuechly is going to look goood in the new Hawk uni.

13. Cards- WR Kendall Wright

Fitz and Wright will wreak havoc and have fun doing it.

14. Cowboys- S Mark Baron

Jerry is feeling that good about his new defensive backfield.

15. Eagles- OT Jonathan Martin

Reid knows how to find that “just right player.” Hey JoMar… have fun blocking for the Vick.

16. Jets- RB Trent Richardson

Another Bama falling star. Rex can’t pass.

17. Bengals- CB Stephon Gilmore

They’ll love the 4.4 dread head for his mental and physical presence.

18. Chargers- NT Dontari Poe

A.J. Smith gets his man amongst boys.

19. Bears- Cordy Glenn

Some guys just seem like they were born to be Bears.

20. Titans- LB Courtney Upshaw

Helping those who need help.

21. Bengals- CB Janoris Jenkins

Bengals are set for years to come, to conquer the NFL’s “passing fancy.”

22. Browns- WR Stephon Hill

Now one of their young guns has someone to shoot for.

23. Lions- CB Dre Kirkpatrick

Gunther sells snow to Eskimos… and defensive prospects to GMs… easily.

24. Steelers- OT Mike Adams

Haley will whip Adam’s apple into shape!

25. Broncos- DL Fletcher Cox

Breaks my heart (and Lyle’s) to see him go there. Maybe Pioli reads this… and history changes.

26. Texans- C Peter Konz

Good out. Good in.

27. Pats- WR Michael Floyd

Hoodie say, “It a gift for U, my Tommy.”

28. Packers- ILB Dont’a Hightower

Hoping to jump from one champion to another. Packers go bpa.

29. Ravens- OLB Whitney Mercilus

The new savior of their front seven. Wish they’d stop that.

30. 49ers- OLB LaVonte David

49ers looking to move LB core from Pro Bowl to HOF.

31. Pats- OLB/DE Nick Perry

Now that Bill is done letting Tom have his fun, he gets his pass rusher.

32. Giants- SS Harrison Smith

Giants don’t play D until January but, it’s nice to have the pieces when the time comes.

The 2012 NFL Draft is now less then a month away. Now that the Combine and initial wave of free agency are behind us I thought it was time to get another mock draft out there. You can see my first mock HERE. Like my first mock, I decided to take this mock up to the Chiefs’ second round pick. So I guess you could call it about one and a half rounds. This time around I didn’t add any new trades. I did change things up quite a bit from the first go round. As always, feel free to tell me where I’m off base.

Also, for more great mock drafts, be sure to visit DC Pro Sports Report (home of the original mock draft database), Walter Football and Hail Redskins.

1. Indianapolis Colts
Andrew Luck
QB – Stanford

There may be some buzz out there about RG3 challenging Andrew Luck for the top spot, but I just don’t see that happening. I think Luck’s experience in a pro style offense and a greater injury concern with Griffin make Luck the smart pick here. The question is, will there be enough of a team left in Indy to help him succeed right away?

2. Washington Redskins (from St. Louis)
Robert Griffin III
QB – Baylor

No one can ever accuse Dan Snyder of being afraid to pull the trigger. I still can’t decide if the small fortune of picks they coughed up to get RG3 was another example of Snyder overpaying to the point that it will cripple his team or the best investment he’s ever made. I think RG3 will be an absolute star. The problem is I see him having injury issues similar to what Mike Vick has dealt with throughout his NFL career.

3. Minnesota Vikings
Matt Kalil
OT – USC

The Vikings choose to protect Ponder’s blind side instead of getting him a #1 WR in Justin Blackmon. I actually think they may try to convince a team to trade up to get Tannehill if the hype on him continues to grow, but I don’t think they’ll get any offers that would be worth it. In the end, their need for a LT and the fact that Kalil is a near can’t miss makes him the pick.

4. Cleveland Browns
Ryan Tannehill
QB – Texas A&M

I don’t think Tannehill has any business being drafted this high. That having been said, we know the Browns wanted RG3, so they’re on the market for a QB. In the end I think they’ll reach for him here. If for no other reason then I think the Dolphins would really like to draft him and since it’s clear that Stephen Ross is destined to miss out on every single major acquisition he sets his sights on Tannehill has to be off the board before pick number 8.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Trent Richardson
RB – Alabama

If I was in charge of the Bucs I would take Morris Claiborne, but I don’t think that’s what the Bucs will do. Greg Schiano was a solid college football coach, but the only reason he was a big enough name to get an NFL gig is because his one great 11-2 season back in 2006 put him in the national spotlight. Why was that team so successful? He had a special talent at running back named Ray Rice that carried them on his back. I’m betting he tries to do the same thing in TB with Richardson.

6. St. Louis Rams (from Washington)
Justin Blackmon
WR – Oklahoma State

The rise of RG3 in this draft was the best thing the ever happened to the St. Louis Rams. Not only did they score a slew of future draft picks, but one of the two players that they would have taken had they stayed put is still on the board at #6 (the other being Matt Kalil). Blackmon will give Sam Bradford the #1 WR he desperately needed last season.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars
Melvin Ingram
DE – South Carolina

The Jags have been looking for someone to rush the passer for what feels like forever. Many people have Quinton Coples going to Jax in this spot, but I think his work ethic issues combined with strong workout performances by Ingram may have knocked Coples off his perch as the top pass rushing DE. If St. Louis were to pass on Blackmon to take Morris Claiborne the Jags would jump at the chance to take the top WR in the draft.

8. Miami Dolphins
Quinton Coples
DE – North Carolina

I think the Dolphins would like to take Tannehill here, but like I said before it appears the Dolphins may never get their first choice of anything ever again. For some strange reason they’ve also decided that they want to run some 4-3 looks now on defense. That will mean they need another pass rushing DE. Coples has all the talent to pair with Cameron Wake to make an elite pass rushing duo. The question is if he will live up to his talent.

9. Carolina Panthers
Morris Claiborne
CB – LSU

In the surprise of the draft so far the Panthers are ecstatic to find that one of the five most talented players in the draft is still available at pick #9. Claiborne is a true #1 CB and with how awful the Panthers pass defense was last year there is no way they let him slide any further. The Panthers were probably planning to draft a DT here, but that will have to wait for now.

10. Buffalo Bills
Riley Reiff
OT – Iowa

The Bills OL last year was really bad and to date they have yet to resign Demetrius Bell their best OT. If Chan Gailey’s offense has any chance to succeed they have to go with the best tackle on the board and that is Reiff. I’m actually not that high on Reiff as a LT, but he would still be an improvement over any tackle on Buffalo’s roster assuming they don’t bring Bell back.

11. Kansas City Chiefs
Fletcher Cox
DT – Mississippi

The draft has set itself up perfectly for Chiefs fans thus far. Dontari Poe, David DeCastro, and Luke Kuechly are all still available……and the Chiefs pass on them all and draft a non-NT defensive lineman. Thousands of Chiefs fans will curse Scott Pioli, throw their remote controls at the TV, and swear that they are never watching a Chiefs game ever again. The pick makes ZERO sense, right?

Well as I described HERE, I think it makes perfect sense. Scott Pioli isn’t drafting someone who is 6’4″ with short arms, plays too tall, and has unimpressive game tape to be his 2-gapping NT. It just isn’t happening, I don’t care how good his combine was. And although DeCastro and Kuechly are Pioli-esqe type of players, I think the positions that they play have good value picks available in the mid rounds. Plus they already have starting caliber players (although not spectacular) on their roster at those positions. What they don’t have is someone who can apply pressure up the middle and Pioli has a track record of drafting defensive line in the first round. So most Chiefs fans will HATE this move right up until they watch Cox push Manning, Rivers and Palmer out of the pocket and into the waiting arms of Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

To give everyone a slight break from the frenzied first 48 hours of free agency (with which I too am trying to keep up), I’m venturing into the hallowed, funny haired ranks of NFL draft prognosticators. Let’s begin with a little conversation about which positions teams around the league seem to be looking for and suggest that that is likely to play a major factor in dictating what the first round of the draft will look like. In just a couple of instances, I’ve deviated from the “pure need” approach and selected a player for value or long term strategic reasons.

Over the last few years, most teams have shied away from taking wide receivers in the first round for a variety of reasons: cost, bust factor, position depth… you get the picture. I believe this is the draft where the pendulum starts swinging the other way.

Cliche or not, through its rule-making, the NFL is emphasizing the passing game more and more. This is brought to fore in the 2012 draft by noting that somewhere in the neighborhood 17 receivers are considered high on the list of offseason needs throughout the NFL. Right up there with WRs, the next most in demand positions are, not surprisingly, cornerback and safety, with about 15 needed for each. Think of it as a co-dependent, abusive relationship.

Let me clue you into something: there are not even 10 WRs in this year’s draft class that warrant first round consideration. I’m gonna tell you one thing more — first round quality or not, there will be a lot of teams grabbing up WRs in the first round for fear that they miss out on filling that need in the 2nd or later rounds.

Here’s how I have primary team needs breaking down by position:

17 Wide Receivers

15 Cornerbacks

15 Safeties

14 Guards

11 Right Tackles

10 Pass Rushers

10 4-3 Linebackers (SAM, MIKE, WILL)/ 3-4 ILBs

6 Left Tackles

6 Quarterbacks

6 Centers

4 Nose Tackles

3 Running Backs

2 3-4 Defensive Ends

1 4-3 Defensive Tackle

I’m making no assumptions about draft trades at this point but I am going to assume that the Free Agent market will take some pressure off of teams looking to draft a franchise QB in the first round. I figure about 3 or 4 QBs with starter potential will be in the mix and likely acquired prior to the draft through FA. The short list of names of who I either know or feel will be in play for starting roles on new teams – Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn, plus perhaps Josh Johnson and Dennis Dixon. The way I see it, that sort of narrows down the list of teams desperately seeking a franchise QB through the draft, now doesn’t it?

Anyway, those are my initial thoughts on this year’s draft. After the dust of free agency has had settled a bit, I plan to revisit these picks and perhaps tweak them for a post free agency mock.

Enjoy, debate, and by all means participate if you agree or disagree with any of these selections.

This time of the year in the NFL is like eating Halloween candy all day long every day for months on end. Not that I’d know how that feels but, I’m guessing this could be what it feels like.

More than anything, it’s a scary good time for Chiefs fans to find out the answers to some questions that’ve been looming for what seems like an age..

Which is the best player for the Chiefs to take in free agency?

Which is the best player for the Chiefs to take in the draft?

You could call it the “which is” magic because everyone has an opinion about which is the prospect that would instantaneously transform the team into a champion. So, this is truly, the season of the which.

Following is the “Three Which-Is Draft.”

The Chiefs could make a myriad of moves with their picks, and between now and the draft we’ll all be wondering which is the best pick in each round.

While such speculation is the jumping off point for many a mock, instead you’ll be given three prospects which I’d be happy with, should the Chiefs select them, at several different possible points that the Chiefs could be picking in the draft.

This will cover four rounds, seven possible drafting positions and 21 preferable prospects. While free agency is just getting under way, we’ll take a break from that to focus on draft prospects.

Here’s the Three Which-Is Draft

Wake up and smell the mockery, Addicts! Before the Combine, or Danica, careen into the fast lane, let’s get some forecasting up and running. So, here’s a great way to start the day, with a mockery of the offseason starring your favorite news headliners, Peyton Manning, and the Chiefs of course!

I attempted to make this offseason mock as achievable as possible. Meaning… these moves could actually be done. No stretching, strangling or back breaking moves are needed to get this accomplished. Especially if you’re Clark Hunt and you have an extra $38 mil laying around. I’ll begin with free agency. However, if there’s anything free agency is not, it’s free.

Free Agency

Sign QB Peyton Manning

Sign OT Demetrius Bell

The Chiefs will then have the 6th best and the 9th best pass protectors in the NFL at their offensive tackle positions. They will also have the best quarterback in the history of quarterbacks (purely an opinion).

NFL Draft

Trade- Chiefs trade back in the first round and pick up an extra third rounder

Chiefs trade the 11th pick with Chicago for… the 19th pick plus the 10th pick of the third round (which Chicago originally received from Carolina).

My first 2012 NFL Mock Draft is now complete. I decided to take this mock up to the Chiefs’ second round pick. So I guess you could call it about one and a half rounds. I did include a couple of trades and some justifications for each pick. Feel free to tell me where I’m off base.

Also, for more great mock drafts, be sure to visit DC Pro Sports Report (home of the original mock draft database), Walter Football and Hail Redskins.

1. Indianapolis Colts
Andrew Luck
QB – Stanford

I may miss every other pick in this mock, but I feel pretty good about my chances with this one. Andrew Luck is the most hyped prospect that I can remember in my lifetime. Between the hype and all the drama involving Peyton Manning, anything short of multiple Super Bowls for the kid would be a let down.

2. Cleveland Browns (from St. Louis)
Robert Griffin III
QB – Baylor

Okay, in this mock the QB situation shakes out like this. Peyton Manning isn’t healthy and hasn’t signed with anyone and no one knows if he will ever play again. Matt Flynn signed with the Dolphins. That leaves Cleveland and Washington in a bidding war to get Griffin. In the end, Cleveland has to give up its other first round pick (#22) to get their man.

3. Minnesota Vikings
Matt Kalil
OT – USC

The Vikings choose to protect Ponder’s blind side instead of getting him a #1 WR in Blackmon. I actually think they will take a good look at Morris Claiborne as well. In the end, their need for a LT and the fact that Kalil is a near can’t miss makes him the pick.

4. St. Louis Rams (from Cleveland)
Justin Blackmon
WR – Oklahoma State

The Rams would probably have preferred Kalil, but since they now have an additional first-round pick to address the offensive line they get Sam Bradford, an elite WR, and hope he does for him what Megatron did for Matt Stafford.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Morris Claiborne
CB – LSU

After the way Ray Rice carried Schiano’s Rutgers team to national recognition, he may very well decide to try the same thing in the NFL and draft Richardson here. However, I think Claiborne is the best player available and Schiano is a defensive minded coach. Also, Ronde Barber is no spring chicken and Aqib Talib looks like the next Pacman Jones (in a “going to jail and kicked off the team” kind of way).

6. New York Jets (from Washington)
Trent Richardson
RB – Alabama

After losing out on the RG3 bidding war, the Redskins are left with little choice but to go after Ryan Tannehill, but the sixth pick is too high for him. So they trade down and allow the Jets to move in to take Richardson. Rex Ryan is hoping that a super star RB will take some of the heat off Mark Sanchez.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars
Riley Reiff
OT – Iowa

Jacksonville’s RT Guy Whimper may have been the only starting tackle capable of giving Barry Richardson a run for his money for the “worst starting tackle in the NFL” award. Reiff will be an immediate upgrade at RT and could even eventually unseat Eugene Monroe at LT.

8. Carolina Panthers
Devon Still
DT – Penn State

Carolina got its offense going last season but their defense was horrible. They were equally bad against the run and pass. Still helps in both areas with the ability to stuff the run but also push the pocket and get pressure on the QB on passing downs.

9. Miami Dolphins
Quinton Coples
DE – North Carolina

The word is that the Dolphins may be switching to a 4-3 defense next year. Even though Coples has some work ethic questions, he’s the best pass rusher in this draft and pairing him with Cameron Wake will give the Dolphins a scary pass rush for years to come.

10. Buffalo Bills
Courtney Upshaw
OLB – Alabama

Like Carolina, the Bills defense was also really bad. They didn’t have a single consistent pass rush threat on the roster. With Coples off the board, Upshaw is probably the number two pass rusher in the draft and OLB is definitely a need.

11. Kansas City Chiefs
Jonathon Martin
OT – Stanford

Martin will be a HUGE upgrade over Barry Richardson in pass protection. Martin’s athleticism will also make him an ideal fit in the Chiefs’ zone-blocking scheme. Martin’s teammate David DeCastro is also an option here (and may even be the better player), but ultimately Richardson needs upgraded much more then Ryan Lilja and I think the guards still available later on in the draft will be of better value then the tackles.

In so doing, I am following the same rules that Merlin and Adam have adhered to with their respective mocks, namely, using DraftTek’s Big Board and going no higher than 5 slots above my pick order to take a player. Without further ado, I present, after the jump, the players that I fully expect Roger Goodell (or Willie Lanier as the case may be) to announce the Chiefs have selected in each given round.

There are a lot of mock drafts flying around these days so we here at Arrowhead Addict decided to try to bring you a different and interactive mock draft experience.

We’ve teamed up with FanSided’s draft Site NFL Mocks to bring you the first ever Kansas City Chiefs Ultimate Mock Draft!

Basically, we have a panel of four mockers presenting four unique picks for every round of the Chiefs 2011 draft. The mockers are picking in a snaking order and once one mocker takes a player, he can no longer be selected by the others. The result is four realistic and unique options in each round. After the mockers present their picks, AA readers are voting on their favorite selection. Whichever players the readers pick will be the official Chiefs Nation selection in the Chiefs Ultimate Mock Draft. The mockers will abide by the picks of Chiefs Nation as they continue on in the full seven round mock. When it is all over, we will have hopefully constructed the most fan friendly mock draft possible.

Let’s get to it. Below are the results so far and the picks for Round 3.

Official Reader Picks:

Round 1: Phil Taylor, Nose Tackle, Baylor (Andrew)

Round 2: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA (Andrew)

Chiefs Ultimate Mock Draft, Round 3, Pick #86

Andrew: (1A)

Pick: Edmund Gates, Wide Receiver, Abilene Christian

Explanation: Speed is the ultimate weapon. In every sport. There is no single physical characteristic that requires defenses in every league there is to adjust more radically than pure, unrestrained speed. NFL defenses are generously scared of it. NFL defenses largely scheme every offense they face by trying to mitigate any potential problem they could face. And few problems are tougher to solve than speed. Jamaal Charles could vouch for that. With the rules skewed in this league to facilitate high-flying offenses, it is time to bring the Kansas City Chiefs into the new era of football.

We’ve got the running back, we’ve got the tight end, we’ve got the Pro Bowl receiver. What we sorely lack is a one-dimensional speed demon to push opposing coverages deep. You think Bowe & Charles put up good numbers with stacked boxes against them? Wait until they have to face defenses that Edmund Gates keeps honest. Gates blasted the roof off the Combine with his 4.37 40 and measured in at just a quarter inch below 6′ tall. Gates has unbelievable hands — he can make the circus catches (imagine those in Chiefs highlight reels, along with Bowe and Moeaki!). His biggest weakness is his immaturity and his lack of polish. Under Todd Haley, those concerns won’t last long. This is a third round selection that could change this team’s future.

The compensatory picks have been announced. The Kansas City Chiefs gained a 6th round pick for losing Wade Smith. This is the first time Adam and I have mocked the Chiefs using the finalized draft order. Also, we get to extend a warm re-welcome to Andrew (off my rocker) Crocker. Andrew joins the draft nuts on draft Thursday. This is his first shot at a mock draft using the rules Adam and I have been following. So, let’s review the rules. The big board on Draft Tek is the official board to make picks from. You can go up five positions from your draft position. For example, The Chiefs first round pick is #21. So, players from #16 and down are eligible to be selected. You are free to go down as far as you want to select a player. Feel free to reach down to #30 (as an example) for pick #21. We are going to assume reports are true that we traded our sixth round pick and Alex Magee for Tampa Bay’s fifth round selection (#132). Also, the Chiefs swapped fifth round picks with the Lions as a result of the tampering decision. The Chiefs, in effect, traded pick #151 for pick #136. Now on to the selections.

This week on Draft Thursday, Adam and I are going to mock the Chiefs picks in a full seven round mock. I did this last year and had a lot of fun doing it. This year, readers can compare Adam’s choices and mine. In the comments, feel free to respond and post your own mock of Chiefs picks. To make this a fair exercise, we all need to follow some rules. The big board on Draft Tek is the official board to make picks from. The rules are as follows. You can go up five positions from your draft position. For example, The Chiefs first round pick is #21. So, players from #16 and down are eligible to be selected. You are free to go down as far as you want to select a player. Feel free to reach down to #30 (as an example) for pick #21. Since we don’t know the compensation, if any for the Jared Page trade, that trade will not be factored in. We are going to assume reports are true that we traded our sixth round pick and Alex Magee for Tampa Bay’s fifth round selection (#148). Now on to the selections.

We are on the cusp of one of my favorite times of the year, the NFL draft. Now is the time for me to lay out where I think the Chiefs will go in the draft. Pioli plays his cards close to the vest, so this is based on reading tea leaves and my assessment of his track record. In round one, I suspect Pioli’s first preference is to trade down. If I were Pioli, I would be trying to leverage Cleveland and Buffalo’s quarterback needs to get one of them to trade up to grab Jimmy Clausen, assuming his is on the board at #5. I would be very much in favor of trading with Buffalo or Cleveland. It would net us either a second or third round pick. We probably can get the player we want at #7 or #9. Now the big question, just who is Pioli’s main target?

My best guess is that the choice will come down to three names, Brian Bulaga, Dan Williams and Rolando McClain. Oh, I can here the clamor already. What about Eric Berry? Now Berry is a fine prospect, however I don’t think Pioli will take him at #5. Pioli is a very conservative drafter high in round one. He is going to go for the steak, not the sizzle. Do any of you believe Pioli is prepared to make Berry the highest paid safety in the game? I don’t think he will. Bulaga would be a solid pro and a viable choice. I am concerned that he might end up playing right tackle and it’s not good positional value to take a right tackle at #5. I could almost flip a coin between Dan Williams and Rolando McClain. With Williams, you get the best NT prospect in the draft. He would make Jackson and Dorsey so much better. Plus, he would allow the ILB’s to roam more. Last year, our ILB’s had to work through too much trash to get to the ball. Dan Williams would be a major step in solving that problem. On the other hand, McClain is the best ILB prospect and would be the QB of the defense. Both are very good choices and either would make the defense better. If you put a gun to my head, Dan Williams is my prediction. If this off-season showed us anything about NT’s it showed us that that teams value them very highly. At any point in the draft, we will be reaching for a NT. It’s Williams at #5 or a reach for Cam Thomas, Torrell Troup or Linval Joseph in round two. Teams will be reaching for NT’s all draft long. I expect Cody to go in round one. NT is a gaping hole and a position with huge positional value. I know it’s a reach, but I would draft Dan Williams in round one and build from there.

In many ways, they do a very good job in commenting on football teams and the draft class. They have been accused of an anti-Chiefs bias. I think that is overblown and unfair. However, what is fair is that they don’t like Matt Cassel and don’t like the direction the Chiefs are going in. While it does not rise to the level of a bias, I believe it does affect their evaluation of the Chiefs.

Recently, Matt McGuire from Walter Football expanded his mock draft to three rounds. For the Chiefs, that gives us four players. It also gives us a chance to see Matt’s strategy in action. When I comment on mocks, I am not looking at it from the perspective of what I would do. I look at it from the point of view of reasonableness. Do the individual picks make sense? Do the sum total of picks represent a solid strategy for the Chiefs? If both answers are yes, then I give the mock a thumbs up. If not, a thumbs down. Let’s go through Matt’s mock. It highlights some of the problems with some Chief mocks.

People love to construct mocks. It’s a fun exercise, but often they look perfect (from their perspective). Usually, this involves players that person covets falling conveniently into their laps. I am not a big one for doing mocks, but I thought I would give it my best shot. I am going to try to emulate a real draft, but I don’t have enough expertise about the other teams to be accurate. So, I am going to mock only the Chiefs’ picks. Let’s set some ground rules to try to make this a fair exercise. 1] No trades. All picks will be picked at their spots. 2] I will use the big board from DraftTek.com as the official big board. The big board does change frequently, but the slot mentioned in this article is accurate as of it’s writing. 3] Reaches will be confined to five spots above the draft slot with only a two spot reach permitted for round one. Reaches down have no limit but I will try not to reach too far, keeping with a best player available at a position of need approach. 4] No assuming free agent signings to patch holes.

Every Monday, I will be posting a hypothetical scenario involving the Chiefs’ eight draft picks in the 2010 Draft.

1st round: S Eric Berry, Tennessee
I will be going through many mocks over the upcoming offseason, but let it be no surprise that I believe Eric Berry is the best game-changer this team can acquire with its 5th overall selection. This year is simply not the year to trade down; there are a handful of players available at the top of this draft that could serve to be elite regulars on the annual All Pro list. Of those players, Eric Berry helps the Chiefs in the place where they need it most: pass defense.

Our safeties were our Achilles heel all season simply because their coverage was poor, their speed was awful, and their playmaking ability was precisely zero. I like Jon McGraw and Mike Brown as much as the next guy, but starting safeties, they aren’t. Their lack of speed translated to the corners being forced to play their receivers soft, and allowed even the woeful Kyle Orton without his three best receivers to rack up 400 yards in a game we won.

Berry changes all that. His tangibles are great (speed, ball skills, coverage, run support) but what makes him great are the intangibles. He is a quarterback of a defense, a true Ed Reed in waiting. He can lead a defense, force offenses to be less ambitious, and punish them when they aren’t.

2nd round: OLB Von Miller, Texas A&M
Expect a ton of 3-4 OLBs to go in the first round this year. Jerry Hughes, Eric Norwood, Sergio Kindle. Pass-rushing is becoming a lost art for many of the teams in this league and pass rushers will go high and often. The most likely edge-rushing demon to fall to the Chiefs will be Von Miller, most likely due to his size. But it’s the size of the fight in the dog, my friends. Miller beat top-prospect left tackle Russell Okung more than his fair share of times.

Von Miller is a pass-rushing specialist. That’s essentially all he does; he’s not going to swallow up blockers in run defense. But I’d spend a high 2nd on Elvis Dumervil, and I think that’s who Von Miller shapes up to be.

2nd round: WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame
The acquisition of Monster Head Weis as offensive coordinator means two things for the Draft: (1.) a ton of Notre Dame talent will be declaring (Tate already has), and (2.) we are far more likely to target them. Weis knows exactly what to do with Golden Tate, and this offense desperately needs the kid’s hands. Tate is a smaller receiver who could nicely compliment the abilities of Dwayne Bowe. With Chambers on board, Tate may be a decent slot receiver, finally laying the ax on Bobby Wade or Lance Long.

3rd round: OT Kyle Calloway, Iowa
This offensive line has a few holes, but one of them is the limited upside of right tackle O’Callaghan. O’Callaghan performed admirably in the final parts of the season, but he’s going to be a liability in pass protection as long as we keep him out there. Calloway provides better pass protection, and he’s a good deal better in the run game as well. Calloway is unlikely to be a potential left tackle fill-in, however, and that may be what this team needs the most.

4th round: C Eric Olson, Notre Dame
I honestly don’t mean to continue harping on the idea of importing Notre Dame’s offense to Kansas City, but with this franchise’s current track record of nepotism, who’d be surprised? Olson is nevertheless good midround talent, a smart player to man the middle and make blocking assignments, as well as able in the run game. More important than bringing Olson in, I believe, is kicking Rudy Niswanger out, who was our team’s biggest liability in the starting lineup all season.

5th round: CB Alterraun Verner, UCLA
I’ve discussed how unusual Pioli’s first draft for the Chiefs, in that he selected almost an entire class of project players with potential upside rather than players who could be immediately ready to contribute. This year, I would imagine Pioli would be focused on more NFL-ready players, and Verner fits the bill while Donald Washington continues to slowly progress.

5th round: NT Kade Weston, Georgia
In my opinion, this is a reach for Weston, but this is the three-down NT that Pioli and Haley want (not the two-down NT that many fans assume Terrance Cody could be for the Chiefs–my guess is that Pioli couldn’t be less interested). In addition to the stout nose Weston could provide this team, he also has the ability to get into the backfield, which of course could be a welcome development for this defense. Pressure up the middle is a must.

5th round: ILB Ryan D’Imperio, Rutgers
D’Imperio is a project as Rutgers didn’t ask him to drop into coverage as much as the Chiefs will, but he has been a solid MLB for Rutgers due to his block-shedding ability. This ability, not his subpar speed, is why I believe that D’Imperio might the much-needed ability to get into the backfield, something the Chiefs’ inside linebackers were lackluster at all season.

Potential depth chart after the jump.

This is my first mock draft of the Chiefs off-season and I hope you enjoy (or at least try not to slam me too bad). Of course, things will change once free-agents are signed and teams make organizational decisions, but for now I see the Chiefs trying to replace Jared Allen with the best Defensive End in the draft. This, of course, could all change if we land a free-agent like Suggs or Peppers. I could also see the Chiefs selecting another Offensive Tackle, one of the QBs (depending on who is available), or trading down with the 3rd overall pick.
