When I think of things that make American culture awesome and what sort of things will most likely be our lasting legacies to history, I don’t really think about Democracy, Full Faith and Credit, the 2nd Amendment, Capitalism, technological advances, the end of the Cold War, or anything like that. After NFL Football, I think our legacy to the ages is our music.

Whether we’re talking Blues, Bluegrass, Soul, Pop, Jazz, Tejana, Rock, Country, Rap, Hip Hop, Protest, Alternative, Americana, or Kenny G, you name it, our music is our highest artform. It is the ultimate expression of everything that embodies our greatness, our ideas, our feelings, and our experience. Deny it not.

I continue after the continue.

This story was originally posted on AA way back in September of 2008, long before I was working here. Back then, Adam and Zach Best (our blogfathers) were running the show here at Addict. I wanted to re-post this for a couple of different reasons.

First, I wanted to show you all that Arrowhead Addict has always been and always will be, about writers providing strong opinions whether they are popular or not. We go on the record here, even if we are seen as foolish. The Fansided Network is a place for the fans.

Lastly, we don’t forget here at AA and we wanted to give a big, fat I TOLD YOU SO to the folks at NFL Network. Adam doesn’t sound so crazy now, does he? Could you imagine how good the Eagles might be with Cowher as their coach as opposed the the always bumbling, one more doughnut away from his heart exploding, Andy Reid? Enjoy.

As you may have read, Arrowhead Addict was mentioned in some detail on the NFL Network‘s NFL GameDay Morning this morning. Before mentioning the Addict–along with the website GetBradyNow.com–Alex Flanagan called Chiefs fans desperate and delusional. Um, did you expect us to be comfortable and content right about now? Then she went on to discuss the Brady Quinn rumors before moving on to the following discussion…

AF: “This one even better now…another fan there is campaigning for (Bill) Cowher and Michael Vick in 2009. They want him in Kansas City. That on ArrowheadAddict.com. Michael Vick, of course, expected to get out of prison sometime in 2009, maybe between May and October. So, he could be ready.”

Marshall Faulk: “I’m happy to see that somebody wants Michael Vick. That’s good to know. Even if it’s Kansas City right now, knowing they can’t get him.”

Warren Sapp: “Does this person who wrote, does he now got a team or something, cause blah blah blah…”

(Sorry, 99, I honestly couldn’t understand that gibberish you mumbled at the end there.)

AF: “Cowher and Vick could be quite an interesting match-up, right?”

WS: “Cowher and Vick–oh yeah.”

Spero Dedes: “Is that how bad, though, it’s gotten in K.C.? I mean, they’re waiting for Mike Vick in 2009?”

MF: “It’s not good. It’s not good.”

WS: “It can’t be good.”

First off, it’s pretty to cool to have our site mentioned on the NFLN. Second, Flanny’s gotta be the hottest chick who’s ever read one of my pieces. Third, it’s not every day two Hall of Famers crack up over your post. Fourth, I wanted to get the fans and media (preferably mainstream) talking about how bad things are in K.C., and that we’re already ready to move on to a new coach and quarterback. Mission accomplished.

Thanks to our readers for helping us get noticed! If anyone can find this online or has it taped, shoot us an e-mail and you’ll instantly become our personal hero.

Whenever I get to Arrowhead I can always sense its mood. To me Arrowhead isn’t just a stadium it’s a living breathing thing. When it’s cold outside it’s quiet. When the sun is shining and it’s warm it’s loud and exciting and it comes alive.

I’ve always felt that there were two kinds of KC football fans. Chiefs fans and Arrowhead fans. Arrowhead fans are also Chiefs fans but many Chiefs fans have never set foot in the stadium. They are missing a lot.

How many football fans can name each NFL team and its stadium? Some can, some can’t. Everybody knows about Arrowhead.

Arrowhead is tough. Arrowhead is loud. Arrowhead has the best tailgating. Its never an easy win at Arrowhead.

Arrowhead’s mood Sunday when we pulled in was like the weather — cold and quiet. Lots of tailgating, not much music, good smells from the grills. Lots of fun still to be had at Arrowhead but it doesn’t have that much to do with football anymore.

Most of the people that show up this late in the year of a horrible season are what we call “transients”. The beneficiaries of season ticket holders who have had enough, or folks that can’t pass up the ten dollar tickets that were selling for a hundred or more at the beginning of last year. Some can talk football, quite a few can’t. I must say that they do seemed very excited to be there.

My buddy Rick and I finally got parked after we were directed around the stadium to where we sit. That hasn’t happened in awhile because of the construction so we were excited. The walk around the stadium with the construction is miserable and the 40 degree weather would have only made it worse.

As we sat and collected our thoughts a red POS Cavalier with four guys in it came screeching up next to us. I heard a yell and the door came crashing open into our van., One of the guys jumped out and promptly threw up by my door then they all jumped out and disappeared.

This one was of those situations that you can ignore if it happens in somebody else’s backyard but if it happens in yours you have to deal with it. This was definitely in our back yard.

One Sunday I hit the snooze two or three times then finally crawl out of bed and pour coffee down my throat.

The next one I’m awake before the buzz checking Addict before I head to KC.

Some days are just brighter than others. Especially when the Chiefs seem to be putting things together.

This one was one of the good ones, and I headed out to my buddies car. I’ve known him since about the sixth grade, the Chiefs games are an opportunity for us to see each other and catch up once a year. I know a lot of season ticket holders do that as well.

Nearly every car we passed on the way had a Chiefs flag or a Chiefs magnet on the door and we waved and laughed with every one. Some were elaborately decorated with Chiefs schemes. My favorite Chiefs themed van is one that has a Delaney and Thomas memorial on the rear doors. That guy works at the post office down the street from my house. I’ve never talked to him but we wave and smile like we are best friends. I had not seen this many cars bound for Arrowhead in a long time and it made me and my buddy laugh with excitement.

When we made our way through the parking lot I talked to quite a few fans standing outside on the ramps and then headed into my section for some more dialog. I don’t believe it had been announced but we had a Stealth flyover before the game. If you haven’t experienced that yet, well that alone is worth the price of admission. It’s simply incredible to see.

The Arrowhead Opinion:

Mark Bradley is looking like a great deal right now. Larry Johnson is oddly kind of neutral as far as his contributions and what we should do with him. By games end it was felt that Larry didn’t seem motivated. Dwayne Bowe went from zero to hero in my section faster than Tony made his rebound with the fans. He is thought of as one of the best players we have right now and an all around great guy. We can use all of that we can get. And of course Tony is a team hero again, not hard to find someone who feels he is the bright spot on the team. We talked about how outrageous it is that a team’s general manager is afraid to show his face on the field. Before the game, Clark Hunt was down on the field shaking some boy scouts hands. None of us saw Carl Peterson anywhere. Everybody I talked to is ready to see him go. Thiggy is such a welcome addition but nobody seems to agree on if it will last or if the spread will hold up.

Opinions of Herm varied dramatically, some are still ready for him to go while others thought he was the one we needed at the helm next year. Chan Gailey is still kind of neutral as well, nobody seemed to want to see him go at this point though I knew that could change as quickly as the wind in the upper decks. We tried to decide if any teams in the NFL currently operated without a GM but nobody really knew. Gunther Cunningham didn’t come up today. The crowd yelled the loudest when the tight ends took the field.

Right before the start, a group of seven or eight Saints fans claimed the empty center of the section next to us and began to loudly taunt all of us. By the end of the first quarter it really began to start heating up to the point where I thought we might see it go past words, and even I was starting to get riled.

A guy in a Chiefs jacket, a very big guy, slowly worked his was down the stairs, pointing at the group and working his way towards them.

We weren’t sure what was up, when he worked his way into the middle of the group and began shaking all of their hands and knuckle punching. They were soon joined by several others Chiefs and Saints fans who good naturedly went back and forth in their celebration for the rest of the game. It was a fun thing to see and says so much about what Arrowhead is all about and I had to make my way over there for awhile.

On the way home I got to thinking about how much more a trip to Arrowhead is than just watching the game, so I thought Id give you some idea of what the fans do to get the most out of the day. Not crazy about making the trip during a losing season? Here is what your missing, lets call them…

“Things to do at Arrowhead, when they’re dead”

Tough loss, huh? Would have loved to see the Arrowhead faithful get a W, but at the same time our Chiefs now have the inside track at the No. 2 overall pick with that Bengals tie. Tyler Thigpen looked good as well, which, really, is the most important thing. And how about that Dwayne Bowe? For those of you who took my advice and went with the over on the total (49), I got it for you by one point. Sorry to make you sweat all the way to the bank!

Anyway, I just think the Saints needed this one more than we did. At times, we lacked an overall sense of urgency and it showed.

Yes, the Chiefs deserve a pink donut for the pathetic donut they put up today against the Panthers. You know it’s bad when I feel stupid for being overly optimistic about the game. There’s offensive ineptitude and then there’s whatever the hell that was by Damon Huard and Co. This is why I don’t believe in Herm Edwards. Not scoring first for Harm is almost like a 48-0 hole for most coaches, because there’s no coming back. Again, this needs to be his last season and we need to get another legitimate young quarterback on the roster immediately. Huard gets a vote of no confidence after this performance. I’m going to go puke…

Adam Best – As much as I’d like to predict a victory after being wrong about the Chiefs last week, I simply can’t. Julius Peppers is going to make it a long day for Herb Taylor, and the Brandons will have their hands full with Moose and Smitty. I see the Panthers getting up early and pulling away late. At the same time, a win wouldn’t absolutely shock me, but last week’s offensive playcalling (especially in the redzone) won’t get us there. Panthers 27, Chiefs 10

Eric Crane – Last week the Chiefs made me eat my words. If this game was at Arrowhead I would take KC, unfortunately for Harm and crew its not. I do expect a close game and a KC cover. Panthers 20, Chiefs 14

Merlin – Close, but no cigar for our young team. The running games and defenses dominate as we spend the next week talking about a conservative offense. Panthers 17, Chiefs 13

Double D – The Chiefs defense revisits to the same strategy it found success with against the Broncos by limiting the run, allowing the underneath stuff but denying Carolina the end zone. Kansas City will be keen to take advantage of the Panthers injury problems at offensive tackle. With Wharton sliding over to left tackle and Otah either out or hampered at the RT, KC will bring multiple blitzes coming off the right edge and inside left. Delhomme will get rattled and throw critical picks in a match where turnovers and time of possession decide the day.

As expected, the Chiefs will struggle to make offensive headway against a very stout Panther defense but by sticking with a conservative, move-the-chains approach they achieve limited success primarily due to effective pass blocking in the first half. Kansas City will key on keeping J Peps tied up while Huard and company come out firing with the play action in the first half and then put the game away in the second half with the run. Heady defense, good field position, and some savvy veteran play by Huard and the four-pronged onslaught of LJ, Charles, Gonz, and D-Bowe prove to be just enough for the Chiefs to outlast the Panthers and squeak by with a very punishing, very ugly, very Hermesque win. Chiefs 13, Panthers 9

John White, Cat Crave – The Panthers offensive line is hurting. Left tackle Jordan Gross is out with a concussion and rookie right tackle Jeff Otah is questionable with a bum ankle. Lucky for Carolina they’re playing the Chiefs – a franchise that hasn’t won back to back games since Watergate. Damon Huard is back for the Chiefs and Larry Johnson started running like he had removed his Dick Vermeil Autographed Diaper last week. I expect the Panthers defense to set the tone, shut down the run and force Huard to beat them through the air – something he will have a hard time doing with his lack of serious offensive weapons. Jake Delhomme will probably hand off more than he throws. He has to hope that Jeremy Bridges and the other likely replacement tackle, Travelle Wharton can do the job. It should be enough as Carolina ought to win this one by at least 10. Carolina 27, Kansas City 13

Addicts, let’s hear your gameday predictions…

Great point, Rando. The Vikings spent a bajillion bucks on Jared Allen, yet they have the same crippling weakness the Chiefs have–shaky quarterback play. Honestly, the One Man Gang hasn’t really been any better than Turk McBride so far this season. 11 tackles and two sacks to 16 tackles and one forced fumble. I’m starting to think we made the right long-term choice for our football team.

Eric Crane - Get your bags out. Without Surtain to lend a hand, big trouble against Shanahan. Make it stop. Broncos 34, Chiefs 6

Merlin – I’ll go out on a shaky limb here and predict a closer game than it should be. It should be a 17 point loss. Broncos 28, Chiefs 17

Kim, Predominantly Orange – The Chiefs are one of the few teams in the league that the Broncos can hold defensively. That doesn’t say much. Cutler will have a subpar game but that is still double the output of any Chiefs QB. While the Broncos have not had the best record at Arrowhead, they will come away with the win. Broncos 34, Chiefs 14

While they were flipping, we were at home flipping out.

Good. We called the Browns about Brady Quinn. The news–good or bad, depending on your POV on Quinn–is that they didn’t bite. But the good news for all Chiefs fans is that the Chiefs’ brass seems to finally have realized that our quarterbacks do and always will utterly blow. The scary thing is that I really think that they approached this season believing that Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen had legitimate franchise QB potential. I’d be less scared if I thought they were just being cheap.

Tyler Thigpen is bad. Elvis Grbac was bad, but an Elvis impersonator is even worse. I’m all shook up. Since he runs so well (and that’s all he does well), let’s run him out of Kansas City. That pick six was a disgrace.

Paging Derrick Johnson. Paging Derrick Johnson. If we wanted someone to pay some one millions to run around fast and whiff on tackles, we’d play Napoleon Harris.

Good thing Jamaal Charles didn’t stay in track and go to the Olympics. He definitely would have dropped the baton. On the other hand, he is fast.

Iron Man haters, step back. Larry Johnson played extremely well today despite having only two lineman who were worth a damn (Branden Albert and Brian Waters) and no complimentary passing game to speak of. Give him 20-25 carries (24), this is what you’ll get. Twice the carries as last week, about 10 times the production. You gotta feed him the rock, Cherm.

I hate to say I told you so, but on Matt Ryan, yeah, I told you so. Homeboy is a player. A little Peyton, a dash of Roethlisberger, etc…he could be something special.

Ow, that hurt like hell. What you say? I just jumped off the Rudy Niswanger train.

I love Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page, but on obvious passing downs they both can’t be left alone as the last line of defense back there–too slow. Either take Pollard out altogether and move Page to SS and DaJaun Morgan to FS, or do the same except play Pollard at nickel or dime backer. Hell, he tackles better than our linebackers do anyway.

Glenn Dorsey, Tank Tyler and Turk McBride, I saw some good signs. While I was impressed with both Swamp Thing and TNT, I wasn’t impressed with Brian Johnston and Tamba Hali. Both got pushed around too much it seemed.

Tony Gonzalez, again, we’re sorry for this. Not fair. Not at all. On your Hall of Fame bust it should say that you made it despite the play of your QBs, not because of them. I’m going to actually request that.

Pat Buchanan could do what Pat Thomas has done out there thus far.

Depressing. Just depressing. On the flip side, and this must be mentioned, we are one step closer to the No. 1 overall pick and firing Harm Edwards.

Adam Best – The ugliest thing in Atlanta since the John Rocker controversy. Tyler Thigpen throws two picks and gets pulled for Damon Huard. Michael “The Burner” Turner indeed burns the Chiefs, but it’s not quite Detroit revisited. Matt Ryan bounces back from a mediocre Week Two performance and plays like he did in Week One, managing the game effectively. If both our defensive ends sit, then we’re really in deep you know what. Bernard Pollard blocks a punt. Honestly, I think where the Falcons beat us is at the top. I’d trade Carl Peterson, Clark Hunt and Herm Edwards for Arthur Blank, Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff without hesitation, and I’d even throw in $100 gift certificate to Jack Stack. Falcons 24, Chiefs 9

Zach Best - Thiggy Smalls is not an NFL QB. Oh, and Michael Bush tore us up after McFadden scorched us. I think Michael Turner might have a big day, while Chiefs fans continue to call for Carl’s and Herm’s firing. 24-10 Falcons.

Merlin - Turner runs wild, Thiggy gets hurt and Herm goes to press box to see if Lenny can suit up. Jabba the Witless writes another Jeff George article. Matty Ice looks OK, and we have to hear about it for the next couple of days on AA. The fire CP and Herm call grows and grows. Falcons 28, Chiefs 13.

Double D - Scenario 1: The Falcons start with the pass, get 2 or 3 quick scores, pound it out the rest of the way behind Turner and Norwood. Falcons 35 Chiefs 20

Scenario 2: The Falcons start with the run, get stuffed, Pollard apologizes to Ryan, Chiefs rush for 227, pass for 206. Hali gets 3 sacks. Chiefs 34 Falcons 9

While Scenario 1 is most likely, Scenario 2 would not surprise considering the teams involved. I’ll assume the former and expect the latter.

Adam Best - Gotta love the Chiefs today. The Raiders are a mess; while we are going to be a team that possibly overachieves, they are a bunch of underachievers. The Silver and Black even has infighting going on between its coaches. I think JaMarcus Russell struggles mightily in his first trip into the Sea of Red. His ex-college teammate, Dwayne Bowe, won’t struggle mightily, like he did last week. The Show will be back. If we can keep Damon Huard upright and Ronald Curry under wraps, we should be good. Chiefs 20, Raiders 10.

Zach Best – Raider defense is so atrocious they can even make Damon Huard look good. This will be much like last season when we beat the Vikings at our first home game. Arrowhead is too pumped up after 8 or so months without football at the stadium. Chiefs 21, Raiders 17.

Merlin – If we get the running game going, this should be the score: Chiefs 21, Raiders 17.

Damon Huard will start in Week 2 against the Raiders. Oakland’s secondary is fantastic, but his insertion is good news for Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe (assuming Bowe remembers how to catch the ball next week). Since shoulder separations can recur, don’t expect Croyle to be back too soon.

I don’t know what to say here, except…

Carl Peterson, bark an order at your executive assistant to get on the horn with Chris Simms‘ agent. Fly Simms in, get him signed and get him integrated. Damon Huard is a monumental waste of time for a rebuilding team. Regardless, it looks like Brokie will be out for some time. Either Huard, someone new or Tyler Thigpen–GULP!–will start in his absence.

Your move, Chiefs. Please wake up and finally bring in a signal caller with a future. Puh-lease! We’re begging you. Well, at least I am.

Well, we already had one insane, angry outburst by a commenter. He’s probably shooting up a Wendy’s right now. Issues. By the way, going on a Michael “Kramer” Richardsesque rant on the site and the Addicts–its staff and commenters–will get you banned. I know a lot of you are upset about our Chiefs, but you can vent and still be respectful of your fellow fans (and almost all of you do–thanks!)

Was my score prediction wrong? Absolutely. I have no problem admitting that. I mean, how was I supposed to predict that Tom Brady would finally get hurt after 128 consecutive starts? Especially when I misplaced my magic crystal ball recently? Regardless, the Chiefs damn near took the defending AFC Champs down.

Why didn’t they? The same reason I said the Chiefs would get blown out, and the same reason I still think they will go 4-12 again. That reason: quarterback play. Brodie Croyle has a good arm and he’s a good kid. But I’m not sure he could make it through a 16-minute season, let alone a 16-game season. He’s never going to be a dependable starting QB. This isn’t even about talent, it’s about durability. Like Samuel L. Jackson, the kids call Brodie Croyle “Mr. Glass.” He’s just brittle. I’m not trying to be mean, but there’s no other way to put it. Maybe it should be Brokie (KCMizzou!)?

Meanwhile, Damon Huard is a waste of time. He may give us a better chance to win right now than Croyle or Thigpen, but not by much. I have never seen a more timid, flat-footed QB in my life. He simply does not like to get hit and does not get rid of the ball. It’s “two Mississippi” and tuck with that guy. His progressions are non-existent as well. Way to totally telegraph that pass to Dwayne Bowe, who was smothered by tight double coverage.

I’m being hard on Huard, but here’s the point: we are wasting our time with these two quarterbacks. Damon Huard is a 35-year-old back-up who’s made it painfully clear that he would rather hold a clipboard and get paid than get hit. As for Brodie Croyle, like Woody Allen said, “80 percent of success is showing up.” He is never going to hold up to the physical pounding an NFL QB is subjected to. He is officially an injury-prone QB. Besides, he hasn’t been worth a damn when he’s healthy.

This is exactly why I was preaching that we should add another developmental QB this summer. Don’t even try to bring up Tyler Thigpen–you know better than to go Thiggy Smalls on me. Now we have to bring in another guy, preferably Chris Simms. If we don’t bring someone in at this point and hedge what, at best, is a risky bet on Brodie, we are ginormous morons.

Our quarterbacks cost us this game. They will continue to cost us and hold back our progress until we find a long-term solution. King Carl and the Preacher better get their asses looking for Option B, and do it like yesterday.

More on the game to come…

KCMizzou:

Let’s talk about some good stuff. Ten bright spots.

1. Pollard and Page tackled well. That’s nice to see.

2. Albert looked pretty damn good.

3. Tony still has it.

4. Charles is going to be a lot of fun to watch for a while.

5. Turk managed to get some pressure and made some quality stops.

6. Dorsey is a big, big man on the inside.

7. Flowers and Carr played well for two rookies in the secondary.

8. Surtain looked much better than he did all year last year.

9. We’ve got some pretty nice depth on the d line.

10. Colquitt is still Colquitt.

This No. 25 doesn’t whiff–he makes tacklers do that!

What a night, huh? My post-game report was a bit delayed by a big fantasy draft and this itsy, bitsy speech you might have heard about. But that’s not all bad news. Why? Because I just got my NFL Direct Ticket and DVR hooked up, so now I can go back through each Chiefs game and report back with the most thorough, in-depth analysis you’ll find anywhere on these here interwebs.

I enjoyed CurtMerzFan’s post a lot, and think he’s indeed on the right track. But he wants to move the wrong player. There’s an old adage that goes “sell high, buy low.” We’d be selling Larry Johnson low right now (he’s also my second favorite Chief, and arguably the best hard-nosed RB in the NFL). Same with Jamaal Charles. That leaves Kolby Smith. I think Kolby could net us a third-round pick. I honestly do. If that’s the case, I say let’s move him.

I was wrong about Kolby (I told you guys Bizarro Adam was coming out). Actually, I was one of his first backers when he was drafted, but I kind of went to the other side after Chiefs fans got a little carried away about his play late last season. The Kolby-is-better-than-L.J. talk was just preposterous. But Kolby can be an every-down back. He is more Priest Holmes than Larry Johnson, but that still works. There are plenty of teams (Houston is one) who desperately need a running back.

Meanwhile, I foresee Jamaal Charles becoming our Maurice Jones-Drew. He is definitely not an every-down back, but his electrifying speed makes him the perfect change-of-pace back to compliment Iron Man. As much as I like Smith, he’s not what this offense needs. This offense needs an explosive playmaker, a gamebreaker. Charles can be that guy. We have to find a way to get this kid 10 touches a game.

By the way, isn’t it nice to see a No. 25 with dreds who isn’t utterly worthless?

The Sippio Cup. It’s an A.A. joke from last season, which I believe was started by commenter xxxlp. I’ll have more on the game later (after I re-watch the game…it’s on a 2 AM CT on the NFLN), but this is the Bobby Sippio I know. When Sippio has both his confidence and the opportunity, these are the kind of plays he is capable of. Just his presence in the red zone alone is enough to warrant keeping him around. How could a team possibly defend Dwayne Bowe, Sipp and Tony Gonzalez with their size, hands and leaping ability? Impossible. I think he did enough to make the Chiefs‘ final roster, especially given Dantrell Savage‘s latest gaffe and Will Franklin‘s injury. Only time will tell…

(FYI, if he does make the final cut, I will stay true to my promise, order my No. 83 jersey and wear it for every game this year.)

Update: Rain has delayed the game. The new kickoff time is 7:05 PM CT.

To make a long story short, Zach is unavailable tonight (he will still be at work like lots of other people) and I’m the commish of a fantasy league that’s drafting. Because of that, we’re going to do an open thread for tonight’s Chiefs game instead of a live chat. Live chat will be back to kick off the regular season for the Patriots game. We’ll do live chats for every game we don’t attend as well. Out-of-towners can stream the game via this link, or listen to the Chiefs Radio Network.

Addicts, leave your thoughts during the game…

The barber may be the same, but not their game.

Speaking of drilled, if Herm Edwards was a drill instructor–and he might have it in him, because his pops served in WWII–here’s what he’d be saying right now :

“24-zilch? You call that football, you pond-sucking scum?! You gang-greenified maggot f***ers! You little girls don’t even deserve to be in the pink panty club! We’re going to have to make you purple panties with little pink flowers on on them, you pansies! I have seen bigger sets of testicles hanging from those Powder Puff bimbos! At least they pop somebody every now and then! You know what?! If a bomb hit this sorry-ass locker room right now, it would be a waste of a bomb! Do the world a favor and choke yourself to death with your chinstraps, you germ-infested puss pockets!”

OK, now that I’ve had my Full Metal Jacket glory, I’m going to cut myself off before I go too overboard, if that hasn’t already happened (um, pretty sure it has, but OK, Adam). At least I feel better after that rant. Hopefully, we all feel better.

Now on to a rapid-fire freestyle about our beloved Chiefs (it hurts to claim them tonight, folks):

Even Brian Waters played like complete ass tonight. Not only was he tippy-toeing around on L.J.’s near-TD plunge (hit somebody, B!), but he was making excuses for the Chiefs’ offense in an interview. Now that’s leadership, 5-4!

Dwayne Bowe may call himself Mr. Awesome now, but tonight he was Mr. Craptastic. His cousin Bobby Sippio was Booby Droppio. His confidence is completely busted after choking against Arizona (thanks for the assist, Thiggy Smalls). Thanks for making me look bad, Sipp. Appreciate it! The catching cousins were the dropping dunces tonight. Their hometown fans want their money back. Now.

I may have been wrong on Sippio. He still has the tools, but I’m man enough to admit I was wrong and that he doesn’t deserve to be on the team. But I definitely wasn’t all wrong. I was right about our QB situation and need for more beef on the line (remember the Where’s the Beef campaign), among other things…

(Scott from Raising Zona was nice enough to put this together for us. Go check out his site to get caught up on the Cards. Thanks, Scott!)

Arizona Cardinals (0-1) take the field this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) on Saturday evening.

What to Watch For: Cardinals QB’s. Coach Ken Whisenhunt still has not announced what the QB rotation will be. I’d look for Kurt Warner to get some playing time this week though after sitting out the New Orleans game last Thursday. As of Thursday, although nothing is official, it is looking like coach Whisenhunt is leaning towards Warner getting the start.

Key Offensive Match-Up: The third receiver spot (fight between Steve Breaston, Lance Long, Jereme Urban, and Early Doucet) vs. the Kansas City secondary. The Cardinals have a good competition going for the third receiver spot, which was vacated by Bryant Johnson, who bolted for less money to play in San Francisco. Breaston and Long have impressed, while Doucet has been hurt during the early weeks of camp.

Key Defensive Match-Up: Cardinals’ secondary vs. Brodie Croyle. This will go one of two ways. Either Croyle will continue to expose a poor pass defense, or the Cardinals will have found a way to keep Croyle and his back-ups in check. Whatever happens, it should be an improvement of the almost 300 yards the Cardinals gave up in the opener against the Saints.

What a way to kick off the Chiefs‘ 2008 season, huh? Here are my thoughts…

The star of the first half was undoubtedly Brodie Croyle. People have it twisted about Croyle; we like him and are pulling for him, but we just didn’t possess the blind faith in him that some Chiefs fans do. Tonight, he definitely made us believe a little bit more than we did yesterday. His opening drive was the perfect way for him to start this season, not to mention put last season behind him. The drive was 16 plays, but that wasn’t what impressed me the most. What impressed me the most was that he was 5-5 on third down conversions. I also liked that broken play he turned into a scramble for a first down. A sharp performance overall.

The star of the second half was Arrowhead Addict favorite Bobby Sippio. Say what you will about his speed, but the guy could catch a bullet blindfolded with chopsticks. He’s also one helluva load to bring down in the open field, every bit as hard to drag down as Dwayne Bowe or Tony Gonzalez. He led the team in receiving with three catches for 57 yards and a TD, and simply took over the game during the game-winning drive. It was good to see Sippio given a chance, as I have always felt he’s a better player than either Jeff Webb or Sammie Parker. All the guy needs is an actual shot. Hopefully, Herm will look at what he did and get him some burn with the first and second strings next game. Regardless, he took a huge step towards making the team tonight.

Tell that smartass, stuntbrain salesman in the office, today is not when the sun is closest to the Earth..(that’s December 23rd) but rather, when the Sun is the furthest north.

So, with all that time between the sunrise and sunset, what better way to fill some of that time than to catch up on the events of the week here at ArrowheadAddict and the rest of the sports world.
Friday, July 25: Begin training camp

Thursday, July 31: Practice with Minnesota, River Falls

Saturday, Aug. 2: Family Fun Night

Thursday, Aug. 7: Chiefs at Chicago, 7 p.m.

(Meet Glenn Dorsey and Branden Albert)

Friday, Aug. 15: Break training camp

(Hopefully, the Chiefs will be arrest free at this point in the offseason)

Saturday, Aug. 16: Chiefs vs. Arizona, 7 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 23: Chiefs at Miami, 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 28: Chiefs vs. St. Louis, 7 p.m.

(Trent Green getting his last shot at Arrowhead)

I am more excited about this preseason than the last few. Most of the time, we are trying to see who will win a few starting spots or who will be a good back-up. This season we will get to see a bunch of young guys fighting for almost every spot on the team, and that excites me! There will be around seven spots on offense potentially up for grabs, and about the same number on the defensive side of the ball. I love competition and I think it will help build a young team. Continue the discussion at our forums…

Goin’ Gonzo: TE Tony Gonzalez extended his franchise-record streak of consecutive games with a reception to 111 contests, the second-longest streak compiled by a TE in NFL history and the sixth-longest active streak by a player in the league.

Herm Edwards on the game:

“The defense put our offense in a bad way,” Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. “Right now our strength, if we have a strength, is our defense. And you can’t give up 14 points early in the first quarter of a football game and expect your offense to come out and start moving the ball. We’ve struggled all year scoring points.”

“Whenever you play KC, you are going to get a physical game. I’m a little sore, but it’s football and that’s what it’s supposed to be.

I was surprised they called it a prop,” Marshall added. “You’ve got to have fun sometimes. That’s what it’s all about. It’s like I always said: This is like playing Pop Warner football and drinking Kool-Aid and eating Pop Tarts. That’s what you have to do in the NFL.”
