Not this is breaking news or anything because most of us knew this, but the Chiefs and Governor Jay Nixon will announce today that they will move training camp to Missouri Western.

Governor Jay Nixon will announce on Thursday that a deal has been made with Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph as the location for the Kansas City Chief’s training camp.

Under the agreement, the Chiefs will remain at the location for at least 10 years and will contribute $10 million from sales tax incentives to help the college construct a new athletic facility on the campus. If the Chiefs don’t follow through, they would owe penalties to the state.

This will be the last year the Chiefs will be in River Falls, Wisconsin. Adam and I went up there last year to experience River Falls for the first time. We had a blast and suggest to any Chiefs fan to go up there if you can. This will be the last chance you have to get out of the miserable Missouri heat and enjoy Wisconsin in the summer. Just make sure to get a hotel room well in advance because Adam and I went through two states and couldn’t find one. Here is the Chiefs training camp schedule for this year and a link to River Falls site:

2009 CHIEFS TRAINING CAMP AND PRESEASON SCHEDULE
Thursday, July 30 Depart for Training Camp – River Falls, WI
Friday, July 31 Begin Training Camp – River Falls, WI
Saturday, Aug. 1 First Day of Practice – River Falls, WI
Saturday, Aug. 8 Family Fun Day – River Falls, WI
Saturday, Aug. 15 Kansas City vs. Houston – Arrowhead Stadium (7 PM CT)
Thursday, Aug. 20 Break Training Camp – River Falls, WI

Carl Peterson has landed his next career in football after being the Chiefs general manager for 20 years. The AP is reporting that Peterson will be the new chairman of USA Football.

Former Kansas City Chiefs executive Carl Peterson is the new chairman of USA Football. He replaces the late Jack Kemp.

USA Football is the national governing body of youth football. Peterson, who spent 20 years with the Chiefs, will serve as chairman of the independent nonprofit.

The group was endowed by the NFL and NFL Players Association in 2002. It hosts more than 100 football events annually, instructing coaches, players and game officials and providing resources for youth football league commissioners.

If you previously believed Gunther Cunningham hadn’t yet lost his marbles, then this piece of news might make change your mind. The Detroit Lions have signed defensive end Eric Hicks. Yeah, that Eric Hicks. You know, the one who’s been out of football since 2007 when he played sparingly for the Jets. You know, the guy who stunk it up in the Vermeil era. Yeah, that Eric Hicks is going to the worst defense in the NFL.

From Detroit Free Press:

The Lions also released two wide receivers: Travis Taylor and Steve Sanders. They signed defensive end Eric Hicks, who played under Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham in Kansas City.

Hicks made the Chiefs’ roster as an undrafted rookie out of Maryland in 1998, when Cunningham was the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator. He spent nine years in Kansas City. Cunningham was the Chiefs’ head coach in 1999-2000 and their defensive coordinator from 2004-07. Hicks spent 2007 with the New York Jets and didn’t play in the NFL last year.

What else can we really say about this one? It’s not often that an over-the-hill defensive coordinator goes to the league’s worst defense and imports one of his old hasbeen defenders who’s been out of the game for a year. Anyone doubt the decision to let ol’ Gun walk now?

This might even be better news than getting both of these players. There is no way we could have drafted a quarterback with Matt Cassel’s experience and caliber in the second round. There is also no way we could get a linebacker with Mike Vrabel’s leadership and poise at the No. 34 spot. Here is more from Peter King:

The New England Patriots have traded quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for the Chiefs’ second-round pick in the 2009 draft, SI.com has learned.

The trade is expected to be announced this weekend.

The Patriots originally dealt Cassel to the Chiefs — now run by former New England vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli — on Friday for an undisclosed draft pick. Now it has been learned that the Chiefs will get both Vrabel and Cassel in exchange for the 34th overall pick in April’s draft.

Here’s Mike Florio’s take, from PFT:

Wow.

A second-round pick, for a guy who merited a $14.65 million, one-year contract based on his play in 2008.

Let’s consider that for a second. Daunte Culpepper with blown-out knee was traded for a second-round pick. A.J. Feeley was traded for a second-round pick.

So, with all due apologies to the Patriots, the current score is Pioli 1, Pats 0.

Adam Schefter and our own Chris Kolb from NFL News and Rumors are reporting that Bart Scott has agreed to a contract with the New York Jets. This will reunite Scott with his former defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.

According to Adam Schefter (NFL.com), the Jets are expected to reach an agreement with LB Bart Scott on a deal that would pay him $8 million a season.

Scott has stated all along that if he was going to leave Baltimore, he would prefer to head north to play for the Jets, as he would be reunited with former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who is now the head coach in New York.

Scott getting paid $8 million a season is a great deal for him, and at the begining of free agency you have to overpay to get talent. The Chiefs will still make moves, but obviously we are going to take the same approach Carl Peterson had and wait until the outrageous contracts settle down. I don’t mind this approach as long as the Chiefs still bring in young talented players instead of the Bells and McLeons of the world.

After having posted the second worst defense in the league (second overall in most yards per game and fourth most points allowed) the Chiefs are holding Gunther hostage. My question to the Chiefs is, WHY?

Why would we not want Gunther to move onto greener pastures, like Detroit. The best thing about him taking another job is that we wouldn’t have to fire him. I thought the Lions would be doing us a favor to steal the “Gun” Show away from us. I know Scott Pioli is evaluating his entire staff and taking his time, but I think he needs to revaluate this decision.

The Minnesota Vikings are still trying to sell the remainder of their playoff tickets for this weekend’s game and they have resorted to begging. They have not hosted a game since 2000 and are still finding it hard to fill up the seats. So they have brought in Jared Allen to beg Vikings fans to spend their Christmas money to come watch the Vikes. I find it somewhat amusing that a multi-millionaire is asking people to spend their Christmas money. You can watch Jared beg here.

The long, dark night of dank despair is over. OTA’s are a dim memory, and UW-River Falls only a warm fuzzy in the heart. Training camp is done, and the over-priced and nearly meaningless faux games they charge full price for are also done. 35 or 40 rookie dreams have been dashed with the cold water of reality, and the final roster is set. The dust is clearing, and now it’s time… GAME time boys… and we’re all watching with bated breath.

Some rookies are walking around a little dazed and glassy-eyed with the prospect of lining up this week against one of the most talented teams in the NFL – the Patriots. They should be a bit in awe of all this. They’re really here, and they’re really going to wear the Red and Gold and the Arrowhead. And they’re going to be accountable for the way they play in ways they never have been before. This is the NFL boys, and those initials can mean anything your play makes them mean; New Found Life, or Not For Long. You’ll each write your own definition on the fields of play from one week to the next.

Be prepared guys – the first time you run into Arrowhead in that uniform for a regular season game is going to be a memory you carry for the rest of your days.

Along the way, you will be scrutinized and cheered for by the greatest fans in the history of the NFL. We don’t just love the Chiefs. We bleed red and gold. We don’t kick the dog when you lose – but we want to. A win – especially a gritty, well-played game that forces the players to rise above our expectations in order to win – is a one-of-a-kind sort of balm us fans can only get from you. And we lust for it like a virgin teenage boy with aching loins. We cannot wait to see what you have become as a team, and we will gnash our teeth at every mis-step, cheer ourselves hoarse at every success, and you will become one of us forever along the way.

I had a dream last week about this week’s game… I dreamed our defense was able to keep one of the best QB’s in the league off balance for the entire game with cunningly devised blitz schemes percolated in the wee hours of the offseason in Gunner’s mind. I dreamed we were down four points late in the fourth quarter and got the ball back with less than four minutes to play… that we ate the clock up with a large serving of Iron Man grits while the Patriots were forced to save time by killing their timeouts… and that after it was all said and done… on the last play of the game with 7 seconds to go… a Tuscaloosa gunslinger hit a rookie WR formerly of Vashon High in St. Louis for a 40-yard TD… and the kid was so stoked he did a victory lap around the field. Of course, this is just one example of the delusional expectations we’ll have for you guys this year… and next year… and for the next thirty years… because we’re Chiefs fans… and we dream in technicolor baby. Yes Chiefs fans, hope springs eternal. And we’re ready for some FOOTBALL!

(Fresh off of adding a weekly dose of Chris Kolb of K.C. Chiefs Fanatic, we’re adding another member to our staff. Yes, we are hellbent on being the best NFL team blog on the Net…and global domination. CurtMerzFan is a longtime commenter and fan of the Chiefs who offers a unique opinion on the Chiefs, one which views the franchise through the prism of their history. CMF is also a musician, and I think his unique talents will be a great fit. Let’s welcome him to A.A. along with Chris! – Adam)

Well if the Chiefs‘ pre-season has taught us anything it’s we are inundated with at least three above average running backs – one already a superstar (LJ), and two others (Kolby and Charles) beating down the door. We also have two more that will most certainly not clear the waiver wire to make it onto the practice squad. What to do… what to do?

I say we can keep four of the five on the active roster if we give the return job to Savage. So, how do we do that without exposing Julian Battle to the waiver wire?

I really think we should explore the possibility of trading Larry Johnson.

Now, before all of you fall over dead from apoplexy, listen closely to my reasons. We absolutely will lose Julian Battle if we try to slip him through to the practice squad. LJ is the oldest of the five, and he costs us the most against the salary cap. Also, while KC gave him a pretty fat deal last year… in terms of today’s contracts, it’s fairly reasonably priced. In spite of his large load two of the last three years, he’s a low mileage guy for the time he’s been in the league, and he’s proven he can carry a team on his back if they have a decent offensive line. He is signed through the end of the current CBA, so there will not be a problem with him if the CBA expires and the league goes into a uncapped year. All of this makes LJ an attractive addition on several levels.

If we could get a decent young offensive lineman, a 2009 1st round pick, as well as a 4th or a 5th round pick for Larry Johnson, I think we should seriously consider pulling the trigger on that deal. There are certainly teams around the league who believe they’re ready to contend for a Super Bowl this year, but do not have a back as talented as LJ. I believe we might be able to find a taker.

Trading LJ would open up a ton of dollars under the cap, and would allow us to start Kolby and bring Charles in for the change of pace. It will relieve the pressure of getting all three of them enough touches, and it will give us the opportunity to better develop Battle and Savage in real time game situations. It’s not a deal I would make without a lot of thought, but it solves the problem of losing one of our fine young backs to a numbers game.

What does everyone else think?

The Chiefs have around $39 million in cap room, almost $10 M more than any other team. I don’t think the Chiefs have ever held this honor, and quite frankly I hate looking like the Arizona Cardinals, but I believe the Chiefs have a plan (hopefully). I think that they are saving money to add players through free agency next year to add to their young players.

The Green Bay Packers are in great shape financially.

The team is $30.5 million below its adjusted salary cap of $126 million.

That puts the Packers second in the NFL, behind only the Kansas City Chiefs, which have $39 million in room.

I also think with the Hunts putting in over $100 million in stadium renovation money, they realize they might need to save a few dollars. It’s smart business for them.

Looks like another former Chief wants to run his mouth about taking it to the Chiefs this season. This time it comes from Casey Wiegmann, who will be playing second fiddle to Tom Nalen.

“It’s strange, and it isn’t. When I first signed here, the first thing I thought of was Neil Smith,” Wiegmann said Tuesday, referring to perhaps the most successful Kansas City-Denver convert. “Hopefully I can duplicate what he did and win a couple Super Bowls. That would be nice. But it’s a job and you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.”

“I think it was that way back in the day. . . . But I’ve got a few friends who left the Chiefs and went elsewhere and ended up coming back and beating them. That’s kind of what I’ve got in mind, too,” Wiegmann said. “(Ex-Chiefs safety) Greg Wesley went to the Raiders. It’s just what happens.”

Thanks for the locker room material, Casey! I guess he thinks he will beat the Chiefs from the sidelines.

This is big news for Chiefs fans, and it shows that the front office is serious about the youth movement.

KCStar.com

The Chiefs and top draft pick Glenn Dorsey have agreed to contract terms, and the team expects him to arrive at training camp today.

Contract terms were unavailable.

Dorsey, the fifth pick in the draft, will immediately step in as a starting defensive tackle.

ArrowheadPride.com

Everyone criticizing Carl Peterson for the perceived media fall-out between the two sides might be eating their words today.

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with Glenn Dorsey. Per Chiefs policy, no terms of the deal were disclosed.

Bob Gretz, among others, believes the contract to be in the neighborhood of $50 million with approximately $22 million in guaranteed money. I haven’t heard any confirmation on the length of the contract, I would imagine 5 years, if it’s that type of money considering last year’s #5 overall, Levi Brown, averaged just over $10 million per year (6 year, $62 million).

What does this mean for the Chiefs’ training camp? Does Carl get some redemption? What do you think about Dorsey getting paid that much?

According to the NFL Network’s Adam Schefter, the Oakland Raiders signed safety Greg Wesley to a one-year contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs let Wesley go last week after losing his back-up job to rookie DaJuan Morgan during spring practices. Wesley reportedly visited the Silver & Black on Sunday prior to landing the deal.

In Oakland he will compete for a back-up job with the likes of Jarrod Cooper, Tyvon Branch, John Bowie, Rashad Baker, Darrick Brown and Michael Waddell.
