Before this week’s game against the Browns, Mr. Positive, (me), was on life support after drowning all year on the incompetence that has become our Kansas City Chiefs. Yesterday’s game killed me.

As we thankfully begin the sunset of this season, I look back and dejectedly admit, that the 2009 Chiefs are not better than the 2008 Chiefs, despite the record. We are in trouble. There has been much more regression than improvement. We have invested heavily in our Defensive Line only to see it fall to pieces by a career back up (Jerome Harrison). I don’t know what to think, is Dorsey that good that we cannot play without him, or is Tyson Jackson that bad that our number three pick cannot hold the fort?

The defense and offense have regressed. There is no progress being made here. Albert has regressed, Waters has regressed, Mike Cox has regressed, and Dwayne Bowe has regressed. Only Charles remains the bright spot on offense. Our entire secondary has regressed, our linebackers are weak, and we still have no KR/PR. Our coaching is terrible. Haley certainly isn’t dropping the balls, over throwing the receivers, or missing tackles, but he is poorly managing the clock, calling bad plays, and benching players who should have been playing all along like Brad Cottam and Wade Smith for example.

So, I apologize to DD, Merlin, and other Addicts. I have no more energy to spin it anymore. I am spent. That is why you haven’t heard from me lately. It is going to be a long, long offseason. Pioli better reach deep into his bag of tricks.

I apologize to those of you who missed the Accuscore last week (Ah hem…Randy). The spread on this week’s game is 2 points with the over/under at 37 points. After 10,000 simulations, Accuscore has the average score as Browns 20.1 and Chiefs 20.4. Wow, that is close!

Here is what ESPN’s Insider had to say, (heads up, they absolutely trash Matt Cassel):

“AccuScore was one of the few sources that did not believe Matt Cassel was a legit starting QB. His 21 TD, 11 INT production in New England was actually pretty poor when you consider the overall talent of his team. His sub-55 percent completion percentage and 13 TD, 13 INT ratio to go along with 13 fumbles (3 lost) make him one of the 7 worst starters in the NFL. In simulations he has just a 72 passer rating against Cleveland and the Chiefs are slight 52 percent favorites. If Cassel throws 1+ TDs and no more than 1 INT the Chiefs chances increase to 63 percent. However, if the Browns sack Cassel 4+ times, pressure him all game and force at least 1 INT, Cleveland is a 69 percent favorite”.

Ouch! What do you think Addicts? Go Chiefs!

From KC Star:

“Chiefs coach Todd Haley said the team has studied center Rudy Niswanger’s bad snaps from last weekend’s 43-14 loss at San Diego, and Niswanger will spend this week trying to correct those mistakes.

Niswanger delivered two errant snaps to quarterback Matt Cassel, who was in the shotgun formation.

Haley indicated that there was a “common denominator” in Niswanger’s poor snaps, but he wouldn’t reveal the specific problem. Niswanger said he didn’t know what caused the problems, but both he and his coach said the episode was enough to elicit extra work to prevent future mistakes.

“You don’t let anything go,” Haley said. “We’re working on it. We worked on it today, and we’ll work on it throughout the week and make sure that there isn’t any kind of bigger issue, which I don’t think there will be.”

Niswanger said he thought it was a technique breakdown that “crept in” and became a noticeable problem.

“I think it was surprising to all of us,” he said. “It’s something that can’t happen and shouldn’t happen, and unfortunately it did.

“It’s like anything. You get back on the field and try to correct it and work on the things that cause that problem. You go back to doing the basics.”

I say the team should work on his run blocking, pass blocking, scheme protection, resume, med school application, unemployment benefits, ah hell you get the idea. What do you think?

Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles tried to tough it out in short sleeves during a cold and windy outdoor practice on Wednesday. He lasted about 15 minutes. “I had to come back in and put long sleeves on,” Charles said. “I’m from Port Arthur, Texas, and we don’t see weather like that.”

Despite temps in the 30s and windy conditions that made it feel like the low 20s, the Chiefs practiced outside for two hours in full pads on Wednesday. “We are trying to create a mentally tough group, that not much can bother them,” coach Todd Haley said. “You can only create that by doing some of these things, not taking the easy way out.”

The Chiefs listed only RB Dantrell Savage (ankle) and RB Kolby Smith (ankle) as limited during Wednesday’s practice.

Chiefs G Andy Alleman returned to practice Wednesday after missing two weeks with a sprained left knee. However, Alleman didn’t return to the starting right guard spot he held before the injury. It looks like Wade Smith is going to keep that spot with the No.1 offense.

Chiefs OLB Mike Vrabel was back on the practice field Wednesday morning for the first time since he injured his left knee on Nov. 15. Vrabel has missed the last two games because of the injury. He was working with the No. 1 defense.

The Chiefs have a decent shot at winning this week. The opening line on this game is 4.5 points. Denver is favored and the over/under is 38.5 points. This one is going to be close. After 10,000 game simulations Denver wins 69% of the time with an average score Broncos 22.5 and Chiefs 16.5.

Per Accuscore:
“For the Chiefs to upset Denver they need Matt Cassel to have at least 200+ yards, 1+ TD passes, no more than 1 INT and Jamaal Charles to average at least 5 ypc. When the Chiefs offense can execute this well they have a 50 percent chance. However, the Broncos defense righted the ship against the Giants and there is only a 15 percent chance that the Chiefs can achieve these levels of performance. The only other way the Chiefs can win is if Denver turns the ball over at a high rate. If the Chiefs are +2 in turnover margin they have a 60 percent chance of beating Denver.”

I wonder if the media is going to play upon the McDaniels/Cassel fiasco which occurred earlier in the year? So far, I have not heard much. Presumably, McDaniels should be very familiar with Cassel, specifically his weaknesses. Hopefully he cannot exploit the same. I say Jamal Charles needs to be the star of the game. Keep the game close in the first half and let it loose in the second. Seems like Haley’s way, correct?

So Addicts, how are we going to win this game?

Here is the report:
http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/intel?gameId=291206012

Ok Addicts, considering everything we know about Clancy Pendergast, if the season were to end now, what would become of him? Do we demote him, fire him, or let him be? Sound Off !

For what it is worth, I say we do not let him go; we demote him to a position coach, and hire Romeo Crennel. Can you imagine Romeo Crennel as our Defensive coordinator and Charlie Weis as our Offensive Coordinator? Weis was the OC the same time that Haley was the WRs Coach with the Jets. Weis and Crennel were on those fabled Patirots teams together. It could happen. All you Patriots West conspirators sound off!

(Crennel was almost hired months ago and for more on Weis’ inevitable return to the NFL read this: http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/13969/weis-says-he-will-work-next-year )

Go Chiefs! Have a great weekend!

So much for Accuscore, huh? That’s why they play the games, right? The KC Chiefs only had a 12 percent chance to beat the Steelers if Charles ran for over 5.0 ypc and held the Steelers to less than 300 yards. Neither happened and we stil won.

This week the Chargers are favored by 13.5 points with an over/under of 45.0. After 10,000 simulations the Steelers win 88 percent of the time with an average score of Chiefs 14.1 and Chargers 29.2.

Per Accuscore: “The Chiefs capitalized on 3 Pittsburgh turnovers to pull off that upset. If they force 3 or more turnovers this week the Chiefs double their chances, but still only win 26 percent of the time. This is because the Chargers defense is playing well and holding the Chiefs to just 14 points per simulation. For KC to pull off the upset they not only have to force 3+ Chargers turnovers, they also have to turn the ball over no more than once and Matt Cassell has to pass for 2+ TDs. If they do all these things KC is a the 51 percent favorite”.

What do you think? We have rattled Rivers before, can we do it again? Can we make it three in a row? Sure would be nice, wouldn’t it?

Here is another link detailing keys KC needs in order to beat the Chargers:

Enjoy everyone and have a good, safe and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

“kb_kcstar: Bernie Pollard makes another big play, not for the Chiefs.
November 23rd, 2009 @ 9:24 pm”

No surprise really since Mr. Pollard occassionally made some big plays for the Chiefs too. However, he seemed to make more bad plays than good. That coupled with his “Freelancing Out Of Position Diva Attitude” cost him his job. So before everyone starts crying about Pollard, please remember a few good plays does not a good player make. Pollard is gone, it is time to move on. Just my two cents.

F.Y.I. Mr. Pollard was the starting strong safety on a defense that let Chris Johnson and Vince Young run for 224 yards. Sound Familiar?

Losing hurts, losing consistently over and over again is painful. Our Pittsburgh game was in essence a little medication to help ease the pain of all this losing. Wins make it much easier to be a Chiefs fan. Wins make it much easier to deal with losing (especially against the Superbowl Defending Champs). A game like that is what brings us all back every day (every hour) to read, to write, to criticize and to admire your Kansas City Chiefs.

You want proof that Haley is our guy. Here it is: in his post game press conference he stated that he “lives and dies everyday” and every moment with this franchise. “Not just on game day, but Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday”, etc… Does that sound like a head coach, or does that sound like YOU!

Could this team be turning a corner? Only time will tell what we do with this win. If we can beat the Steelers, then we can beat the Chargers, the Broncos, the Bills, the Browns, and the Bengals. Right? We could have (should have) beaten the Ravens, Raiders, Cowboys, and Jacksonville. Maybe this team isn’t as bad as one would think? Improvement and progress is starting. Could our consistent pain be going away? This week was definitely a “shot in the arm”.

First and foremost: Tony Gonzalez was one of the best Chiefs in franchise history and will go down as the absolute greatest tight end in NFL history ever. Everything he has done for the Chiefs over the years is greatly appreciated. He brought us all so much joy and pride over the years. He always said he wanted to finish his whole career in KC.

However, my all time favorite player Tony Gonzalez “bitched” (yeah, I said it) his way out of KC and indicated that he wanted to go to a Superbowl contender. I was surprised to hear that he OK’d the trade to Atlanta, since I believed at the time, and believe now, that Atlanta was never a serious contender for the Superbowl. Once in Atlanta, Tony immediately began gushing about how the Falcons were one of the best teams he has ever played on, and in fact said that Matt Ryan (who is currently playing lousy) was the best QB he ever played with (cue Trent Green sigh).

Atlanta started off hot and is now faltering. They are currently sitting at number two in their division with a 5-4 record behind New Orleans and their 9-0 record. I am sure that Atlanta will not win the Superbowl. (Do you think Atlanta is going to beat the Vikings, New Orleans, New England, Indianapolis or even Cincy?)

The more Atlanta loses the better second round pick we will receive. So is it wrong to root against the Falcons and Tony? Aren’t you all secretly hoping for an Atlanta collapse? Don’t you want them to miss the playoffs? I am and I do.

It is obvious to me that even if we had Tony Gonzalez on our team this year, we would still suck. I was heartbroken but ok with the trade when it happened, and now even more so. Thus, in hindsight, the trade of Tony for Atlanta’s second round pick was a very, (although bittersweet) smart move for the Chiefs, and it gets better every loss they tally. Am I Right? Who among you are looking at the box score every week hoping for that Atlanta loss? Am I the only one? Is it wrong?

Here you go Randy. According to Vegas, the Steelers are favored to win by 10 (only ten?). The over/under is 40. After 10,000 simulations the average score is Steelers 27.2 vs. Chiefs 13.7, with the Steelers winning 84 percent of those simulations.

Per Accuscore: “The Steelers offense only had 256 yards in their loss to the Bengals. However, the Chiefs are in the bottom 8 in run defense and in the bottom 10 in passing defense. There is only a 12 percent chance that the Chiefs can hold the Steelers offense to under 300 yards. If they can do this the Chiefs have a 35 percent chance (+20 percentage point improvement), but to pull off the upset the Chiefs will also need Jamal Charles to have at least 3 explosive runs and a 5.0 ypc average. If he can do this and the Chiefs allow under 300 yards Kansas City is a 53 percent favorite.”

So Charles just has to average 5.0 ypc and the Chiefs hold the Steelers to under 300 yards?!? No problem? Right?

Here is the Accuscore report:

Well, we won and I feel so warm and fuzzy inside. Hardly! Man we are a bad team. The Chiefs are just plain bad all around. We need a serious influx of serious skill.

If you have been a fan of this site, you know that the whole entire offseason we will be talking about the draft. Since I don’t follow college football, I can add no real insight. (Seriously if I followed college football and the NFL, I would get absolutely nothing done, that is why I only obsess over the Chiefs and the NFL). So I am not going to talk about the upcoming draft projections and talent. But what I do want to talk about, (yes halfway through the season), is Free Agency: Specifically upcoming free agents at the following positions: OL, TE, DT, LB, FS/SS.

The Chiefs are in bad need of talent at these positions and have little patience to wait for a “draft gem” to develop. Caveat: I know it is early, and some of these guys will never hit the free agent market (tags), but I am including everyone in a contract year.

Here are the upcoming free agents at the OL position:
Jahri Evans, New Orleans Saints (26)
Logan Mankins, New England Patriots (27)
Marcus McNeill, San Diego Chargers (25)
Daryn Colledge, Green Bay Packers (27)
Jared Gaither, Baltimore Ravens (23) – Restricted FA
Winston Justice, Philadelphia Eagles (24)
Kevin Mawae, Tennessee Titans (38)
Chad Clifton, Green Bay Packers (33)
Mike Gandy, Arizona Cardinals (30)
Eugene Amano, Tennessee Titans (27)
David Baas, San Francisco 49ers (27)
Khalif Barnes, Oakland Raiders (27)
Alex Barron, St. Louis Rams (26)
Mike Brisiel, Houston Texans (26)
Jeromey Clary, San Diego Chargers (25) – Restricted FA
Nick Cole, Philadelphia Eagles (25)
Willie Colon, Pittsburgh Steelers (26)
Ryan Cook, Minnesota Vikings (26)
Tyson Clabo, Atlanta Falcons (28)
Harvey Dahl, Atlanta Falcons (28)
Cornell Green, Oakland Raiders (33)
Rex Hadnot, Cleveland Browns (27)
Ben Hamilton, Denver Broncos (32)
Justin Hartwig, Pittsburgh Steelers (30)
Stephon Heyer, Washington Redskins (25) – Restricted FA
Richie Incognito, St. Louis Rams (26)
Jon Jansen, Washington Redskins (33)
Charlie Johnson, Indianapolis Colts (25)
Nick Kaczur, New England Patriots (30)
Chris Kuper, Denver Broncos (26)
Deuce Lutui, Arizona Cardinals (26)
Stephen Neal, New England Patriots (32)
Rudy Niswanger, Kansas City Chiefs (26)
Donald Penn, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26)
Chester Pitts, Houston Texans (30)
Manuel Ramirez, Detroit Lions (26) – Restricted FA
Rob Sims, Seattle Seahawks (25)
Chris Spencer, Seattle Seahawks (27)
Jason Spitz, Green Bay Packers (26)
Adam Terry, Baltimore Ravens (27)
Jeremy Trueblood, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26)
Bobbie Williams, Cincinnati Bengals (32)
Marshal Yanda, Baltimore Ravens (24)
Outlook: Good. As you can see, there may be a lot of good free agents at the O-line positions. Any names pop out at you? I see a bunch. I really doubt that Niswanger stays, unless he is content on being a back up Center. Here are a few of the names that I like: Jahri Evans, Logan Mankins, Daryn Colledge, Willie Colon, Deuce Lutui, Jeremy Trueblood, Rob Sims, Chris Spencer, and Jason Spitz. I think all of these players are “gettable”. (Scott Pioli Please Save This List!) What do you think? Can we save a draft pick here?

Here are the upcoming free agents at the TE position:
Owen Daniels, Houston Texans (26)
Tony Scheffler, Denver Broncos (26)
Alge Crumpler, Tennessee Titans (31)
Anthony Fasano, Miami Dolphins (25)
Daniel Fells, St. Louis Rams (25)
Jeff King, Carolina Panthers (26)
David Martin, Miami Dolphins (30)
Randy McMichael, St. Louis Rams (30)
Billy Miller, New Orleans Saints (32)
Leonard Pope, Arizona Cardinals (25)
Bo Scaife, Tennessee Titans (28)
Derek Schouman, Buffalo Bills (24)
Alex Smith, New England Patriots (27)
L.J. Smith, Baltimore Ravens (29)
Matt Spaeth, Pittsburgh Steelers (24)
Ben Watson, New England Patriots (28)

Outlook: Bad. As you can see, we are going to have to draft our TE talent. The free agency pool is limited, and the top names of Owens, Fasano and Scheffler will not be allowed to hit free agency. Matt Spaeth may be worth a look see. Round two to four, maybe?

Here are the upcoming free agents at the DT position:
Vince Wilfork, New England Patriots (27)
Richard Seymour, Oakland Raiders (29)
Casey Hampton, Pittsburgh Steelers (31)
Ryan Pickett, Green Bay Packers (29)
Johnny Jolly, Green Bay Packers (26)
Tony Brown, Tennessee Titans (28)
Kendrick Clancy, New Orleans Saints (31)
Barry Cofield, New York Giants (25)
Jason Ferguson, Miami Dolphins (34)
Aubrayo Franklin, San Francisco 49ers (29)
Kedric Golston, Washington Redskins (26)
Tank Johnson, Cincinnati Bengals (27)
Travis Johnson, San Diego Chargers (27)
Fred Robbins, New York Giants (32)
Clifton Ryan, St. Louis Rams (25)
Tank Tyler, Carolina Panthers (24) – Restricted FA
Outlook: So-so to Bad. Remember, we need a 3-4 nose tackle. Unfortunately Vince Wilfork will be tagged, he is going nowhere. Hampton could be a possibility, but it looks like we are going to have to draft a big strong fast fat guy. Rounds one through three, maybe?

Here are the upcoming free agents at the LB position:
Barrett Ruud, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26)
Shawne Merriman, San Diego Chargers (25)
Karlos Dansby, Arizona Cardinals (28)
DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans (25)
Thomas Davis, Carolina Panthers (26)
Kirk Morrison, Oakland Raiders (27)
Thomas Howard, Oakland Raiders (26)
D’Qwell Jackson, Cleveland Browns (25)
Antwan Barnes, Baltimore Ravens (24) – Restricted FA
Bertrand Berry, Arizona Cardinals (34)
Chase Blackburn, New York Giants (26)
Gary Brackett, Indianapolis Colts (29)
Tedy Bruschi, New England Patriots (36)
Keith Bulluck, Tennessee Titans (32)
Brandon Chillar, Green Bay Packers (26)
Danny Clark, New York Giants (32)
Angelo Crowell, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (28)
Keith Ellison, Buffalo Bills (25)
Larry Foote, Detroit Lions (29)
Scott Fujita, New Orleans Saints (30)
Omar Gaither, Philadelphia Eagles (25)
Chris Gocong, Philadelphia Eagles (25)
Clint Ingram, Jacksonville Jaguars (26)
Rashad Jeanty, Cincinnati Bengals (26)
Derrick Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs (26)
Akeem Jordan, Philadelphia Eagles (24) – Restricted FA
Cato June, Houston Texans (29)
Rocky McIntosh, Washington Redskins (26)
Matt Roth, Miami Dolphins (26)
Jason Taylor, Miami Dolphins (35)
Zach Thomas, Kansas City Chiefs (36)
Pisa Tinoisamoa, Chicago Bears (28)
Stephen Tulloch, Tennessee Titans (24)
Mike Vrabel, Kansas City Chiefs (34)
Outlook: Good. There are a couple of good linebackers we may want to bring in from the above list. Merriman anyone? Wouldn’t he love to stick it to AJ Smith twice a year for not extending him? He is a 3-4 linebacker. It takes more than one year to get back to full strength with knee injuries, right? Karlos Dansby, Demarco Ryans (unlikely), Barret Ruud, Thomas Howard, Larry Foote, Omar Gaither, and Rocky McIntosh; we could strike gold here couldn’t we? Can we save a draft pick here?

Here are the upcoming free agents at the FS/SS position:
O.J. Atogwe, St. Louis Rams (28)
Nick Collins, Green Bay Packers (26)
Antoine Bethea, Indianapolis Colts (25)
Darren Sharper, New Orleans Saints (33)
Will Allen, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27)
Atari Bigby, Green Bay Packers (27)
Tyvon Branch, Oakland Raiders (22)
C.C. Brown, New York Giants (26)
Daniel Bullocks, Detroit Lions (26)
Josh Bullocks, Chicago Bears (26)
Tyrone Carter, Pittsburgh Steelers (33)
Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh Steelers (29)
Hiram Eugene, Oakland Raiders (28)
Roman Harper, New Orleans Saints (26)
Sean Jones, Philadelphia Eagles (27)
Dawan Landry, Baltimore Ravens (26)
Danieal Manning, Chicago Bears (27)
Jarrad Page, Kansas City Chiefs (25)
Brodney Pool, Cleveland Browns (25)
Mark Roman, San Francisco 49ers (32)
Gerald Sensabaugh, Dallas Cowboys (26)
Roy Williams, Cincinnati Bengals (29)
Outlook: So-so. Atogwe, Collins, Bethea, Branch, Landry, could all be possibilities. However, it looks like we will have to dip into the draft. Safeties take a long time to develop (awareness) so we could be in some trouble.

In sum, we will not need to use our top three draft picks on O-lineman if we can pluck a one or two of the free agent offensive lineman that come available. We need to draft the best player available with our “soon to be” top five pick, then a big fat NT, then a good TE, then safety. Two Free agent O-lineman and Two Free agent LBs named above will help save that day in April. What do you think?

It is Raiders week. I always love Raiders week, usually because we are always favored to win. Not this year. Currently, Vegas odds have the Chiefs as 1.5 to 2.5 point underdogs. The over under is 36.5 to 37.5 points. They are again predicting a close game. Accuscore, after 10,000 simulations, is predicting an even closer game with the Chiefs winning by .2 points!!! (Chiefs 17.0 vs. Raiders 16.8).

Per Accuscore: “The Chiefs statistically dominated the earlier match-up vs the Raiders but lost because of costly turnovers. This is expected to be a close game with the Raiders just 53 percent favorites winning by less than an average of 1 point. In games this close turnover margin is the key. If Matt Cassell throws no more than 1 INT the Chiefs are the 52 percent favorite, but if he throws 2 or more the Raiders are the heavy 75 percent favorite. The Chiefs defense is dead-last in INTs at just 3 in 8 games. Even the INT prone JaMarcus Russell only has a 50 percent chance of throwing an INT. This has a lot to do with the Raiders offense looking to stick with the run. If the Raiders average over 4.5 ypc they are 68 percent favorites, but if they are held under 4 ypc the Chiefs are the 56 percent favorite.”

Take a look:

What do you think? How are we going to win this game?

With regards to the KC Chiefs, the media use the word “rebuilding” quite often. However, lets be honest, we are not in a rebuilding mode. We are absolutely still in a demolition mode. How can you say you are rebuilding when there is so much more to be torn down?

Let me give you an analogy: I recently underwent a remodeling project (true story). I started with one contractor (Herm Edwards; he wasn’t actually the contractor for my project but you get the drift) who did some demolition and some rebuilding but encountered some major problems, and I ultimately had to let him go (end of 2008 season). I hired a new contractor (Haley/Pioli) who indicated that the old contractor had made quite a few mistakes, but the new contractor could change a few things and work with what the earlier contractor had done so that the earlier work wasn’t a total loss (beginning of 2009 season). The new contractor started the new project and realized after some considerable work (1-7), that he could not just change a few things, and actually could not work with what the other contractor did (totally wasted 2009 season). He had to demo everything and start over (upcoming 2010 season). Catch my drift?

Want further evidence? Here it is:

Needs Demolition
LT: Blow this position up! Branden Albert is struggling. Maybe he should be moved to Left Guard next year. The position he played so well in college it got him drafted in the first round. A True LT should be drafted with our top pick.
LG:	Blow this position up! Waters skills are eroding. He should be moved to Center and let Albert take his spot.
C: Blow this position up! Move Waters here or get completely new personnel
RG:	Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel. Nothing worth salvaging.
RT:	Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel.
TE:	Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel. Nothing worth salvaging.
WR:	Partial Tear Down: Bowe Stays, Long for depth, Wade for depth, let everyone else go, including soon to be 32 year old Chambers.
FB:	Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel.
NT: Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel. Nothing worth salvaging
LB:	Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel. Yes, all the LBs must go. Even Tamba; who is playing his heart out, but still not getting it done.
S:	Blow this position up! Need completely new personnel. Our safety’s suck, Do I need I say more?

Offensive Coordinator: Need one
Defensive Coordinator: Need new one

The only positions worth keeping and building on are: QB (Cassel); DE (Dorsey, Jackson); CB (Flowers, Carr); K (Succop); and P (Colquitt). Our Special Teams Coach can stay.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm. The team is struggling at 1-7, and yet the pro shop has decided to charge the full $80 price for replica jerseys (They probably pay $less than $10 for them). I assume that the pro shop does NOT have merchandise flying off the shelves at this point in time. When the team does well I am sure there is a direct correlation to high sales; since their are so many bandwagoners. The law of supply and demand would dictate that they should lower their prices to move Chiefs product. Not only that, but in order to drum up some team pride and spirit, give the real Chief fans a break and let them buy some merchandise at a lower price especially when the chips are down.

Any thoughts, or am I just a cheap bastard?

Born on November 11, 1968 in Euless, Texas was K Lin Elliott. He joined the Chiefs as a free agent in 1994 after two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, including a trip to the Super Bowl. Elliott kicked for two seasons with the Chiefs (1994-95), hitting 49 of 60 FG attempts and 64 of 67 PAT kicks. But it was his missed FGs against Indianapolis in the ‘95 playoffs that ended his NFL career. Elliott was wide right on a 35-yard attempt, and wide left on kicks from 30 and 42 yards in the Chiefs 10-7 defeat. (Hat tip to Bob Gretz)

Remembering those missed kicks still makes me sick to my stomach. Marty too, I am sure.

I got back from my Caribbean vacation a couple of hours before the Chiefs game started. I was in total isolation without any Chiefs’ news for over a week. The vacation and bye week helped recharge my Chiefs battery. (It was running extremely low). I figured it would also help the Chiefs to victory as they had an extra week to prepare for one downtrodden opponent. Uhhhh, not so much, huh?

This team is just plain perplexing on many levels. So I will address my biggest gripe: It’s time to let it all out. Screw the conservative; keep it tight offensive play calling B.S. We need to throw and throw some more. Since we are only converting 20% of our third downs, and have so many three and outs it only makes since, right? We are not a run team. We don’t have the personnel. Is this that difficult to understand?

We need an offense like the Eagles. Use Kolby Smith, Jamal Charles, and Dantrel Savage just like Andy Reid does with Brian Westbroook. Just like the Eagles, we should make every play a pass, including our run plays. I am not kidding. Have you seen an Eagles game? What do we have to lose? We are freaking 1-7!

You have to go with your play makers. Just compare Bowe, Chambers, Long, Wade, and Bradley at WR and then compare Smith, Charles, and Savage at RB. We have better play makers at WR than RB. Don’t give me this crap about our O-line, I know our O-line sucks, they can’t run or pass protect. Here is my game plan for the rest of the year: throw to Bowe, throw to Chambers, throw to Long, and repeat. Are seeing my point?

P.S. Get rid of “I cannot block and I cannot catch” Sean Ryan. He is pissing me off. He cannot be that better than Brad Cottom. So much for my vacation. I have to get back to work. Ugh!

Being a devout Chiefs fan lately has been very painful for all of us. It has even harkened some to question their fandom and quit. However, just remember, this pain is only temporary, it will obviously last the rest of this season, and maybe into the next, but the pain will go away, and in its stead will be great pride, as it once was. If you abandon your fanaticism of the Chiefs now, your disappointment will last forever. Just think about how wonderful it is going to be to say that you have always been a Chiefs fan even through its darkest days, as I believe we currently are. Keep the faith and fanaticism.

In case you were wondering, this is what the players where thinking Sunday during and after the game:

Jamaal Charles: “If I don’t block this special team guy in front of me, I can get down the field faster to miss my tackle of the punt returner”. (Missed block leads to blocked punt)

Sean Ryan: “Why should I use my hands to make a catch, the chest works just as good”. (Another pass bounces off his chest and into the arms of a defender)

Dwayne Bowe: “It is much better to drop a few passes, that way no one can expect me to make every catch; it also add suspense”. (After another dropped pass)

Rudy Niswanger: “Yes! You’re not going to have Rudy Niswanger to push around any more”. (After serious knee injury)

Todd Haley: “I should have never made that comment about ‘any 22 guys off the street’ could do better than 2-14”. (After another humiliating loss)

Dustin Colquitt: “I am going to have to file a work comp claim for repetitive injury” (After punting more than he should)

Kenny Smith: “Now I know why this team signed me up after not playing a snap in 6 years” (After perusing his new cohorts on the D-line).

Clancy Pendergast: “On critical third downs at pivotal points in the game, I always blitz everyone without any regard to leaving an open receiver in the flat. I know that my players will never get to the opposing QB on time, but they other team doesn”t. (After Darren Sproles’ 48 yard TD pass).

Brandon Carr: “There really is no need to locate the ball until it is in the receivers hands, that is when you know when to tackle him” (after another big receiver catch right over his back).

John McGraw: “There really is no need to locate the ball until it is in the receivers hands, that is when you know when to chase them” (after another big receiver catch right over his back too).

Matt Cassel: “It’s okay, interceptions happen in threes.” (After throwing his third interception)

Matt Guiterrez: “Oh God no!” (After being inserted late in the game).

Larry Johnson: “I wonder if Todd Haley wants to go golfing later” (After getting off the phone with his father).

How about yours? Addicts, you got any? We need something to CHEER US UP!!!! Go Chiefs. Next year here we come.

Sorry guys about the lag. It has been hard to get posts up lately. It is difficult when running a full time law practice to get away sometimes. In any event, here is what Accuscore has to say about this week’s game:

Chargers 25 Chiefs 18

“The Chargers defense is once again struggling on 3rd down and in simulations the Chiefs are converting a higher percentage of third downs than the Chargers are. Neither is very good at Kansas City 39 percent San Diego 36 percent. Despite this the Chargers are favored because Philip Rivers will not face the type of pressure that he dealt with vs Denver. Kansas City has just 9 sacks this year and if Rivers does not get sacked more than twice and the Chargers do not turn the ball over more than once the Chargers win over 69 percent of simulations. The Chiefs need the offense to have a big game vs the struggling Chargers defense. If KC gets Larry Johnson to have at least 4.5 ypc and Matt Cassel passes for 250+ yards the Chiefs are favored winning 51 percent. ”

I figure DT Marlon Favorite would have been signed to the active roster and Kenny Smith to the practice squad since Marlon is younger, presumably in better shape, weighs 11 pounds more, and would cost much less than a veteran. What are your thoughts?

Tamba Hali is playing his ass off. Unfortunately for him, he has been missing the QB by a matter of milliseconds. This season he has 14 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. So far he has faced some good teams with some good tackles and they have been just good enough to keep him a breath away from their QBs.

Here is a look at what Tamba has faced:
Ravens: J. Gaither, LT, M Oher, RT
Raiders: M Hendersen LT, E Pears, RT
Eagles: J Peters, LT, W. Justice, RT
Giants: D Diehl, LT, K McKenzie, RT
Cowboys: F Adams, LT, M Columbo, RT

This week he is facing an O-line missing its number one left tackle, Chris Samuels. He will be facing three year back up: Stephon Heyer at LT, and out of shape and out of football since 2006: Mike Williams at RT.

Tamba Hali has to be “chompin’ at the bit” for this weekend’s game. Tamba will create problems for RT Mike Williams, due to Mike’s slowness, recent inactivity and well documented weight problems. Let’s face it; Mike Williams was released from Buffalo and Jacksonville because he was not that good. Even though he has lost some weight, do you believe he has gotten better since 2006 while eating donuts and Twinkies?

Even if he is lined up against LT Heyer, Tamba should still fare well. The Washington Times wrote two articles in the offseason (June) stating that Heyer barely won the RT spot (during OTAs) beating out Mike Williams and Jeremy Bridges (who they released). That does not speak volumes about his ability, does it? Heyer has struggled at times playing left tackle. He yielded 3.5 sacks in four starts last year and was beaten for a safety in last Sunday’s loss to Carolina.

The Redskins O-line is in shambles and Tamba and the Chiefs should capitalize. What do you think?

Well, here I go again. Accuscore predicted last week, if LJ could get over 70 yards rushing the Chiefs would have a 66% chance of winning the game against the Cowboys. He did not. Accuscore also indicated that If Matt Cassel was sacked 4 or more times then the Chiefs had a 21% chance of wining. He was sacked 4 times.

For those of you who are interested, this week Accuscore predicts that after 10,000 simulations that if Clinton Portis averages over 4 yards per carry the Redskins will have a 77% chance to win. If Larry Johnson runs for 75+ yards and 1 touchdown, then the Chiefs have a 59% chance of winning. Matt Cassel has a 43% chance of throwing an interception, and Jason Campbell just has a 39% chance of throwing an interception. Accuscore also has the Chiefs losing the game by an average of 7 points.

To me, seven points means a close game. I say the Chiefs take it, go figure, huh? How about you?

From Profootballtalk.com:

“The Chiefs have fired demoted wide receivers coach Dedric Ward.

The move comes six weeks after Kansas City handed offensive coordinator Chan Gailey a pink slip.

Ward’s replacement will be Richie Anderson, a former running back for the Jets. Ward remains on staff, but in what capacity is unclear.

Head coach Todd Haley refused to comment on the maneuver Wednesday, but had expressed discontent with the Chiefs’ wideouts throughout training camp. No. 1 receiver Dwayne Bowe was even benched at one point.

Haley, a former receivers coach himself, has played musical chairs at the position into the season. Mark Bradley and Bobby Wade, who signed off the street on the Monday after Week One, have been shuttled in and out of the starting lineup. According to the Chiefs’ website depth chart, Bobby Engram is a third-stringer.”

Haley is again lighting fires, (or maybe putting them out). Sound Off Addicts!

Hello Brad? Are you there? Where are you? “It’s me, opportunity knocking”. (Mr. Cottam has failed to answer).

Some of you may remember back on June 5, 2009, I posted an article about Brad Cottam. I normally do not re-hash things, but I have to admit that I was wrong about Brad. Here is an excerpt of what I wrote back in June:

“As a rookie, this third round pick played in all sixteen (16) games last year starting seven (7) of them. He spent most of the year honing his blocking skills and playing second string to Tony. He had no passing plays until week eight (8) against the Jets when Chan Gailey finally split him out like the Chiefs did with Tony. Per Cottam “splitting him out was only to last for one series but they did it on four (4) series since it worked so well”. He had four catches for thirty four (34) yards that game. Of course those aren’t Tony numbers, but those are pretty good. He averaged 9.0 yards a catch for the year.

Additionally, Brad Cottam is bigger than any linebacker or cornerback in the league. His size will create serious mismatches. This size disparity will allow him to outreach defenders for all footballs thrown his way. Can you imagine a six (6) foot corner (which is big by NFL standards) or a six foot two inch (6’2) LB on him? That’s a five (5) to seven (7) inch height difference, and at 269 pounds he will be able to “post up” like Tony used to. (Brad Cottam will make an excellent red zone threat with Bowe probably receiving double coverage). Best of all, Brad is also very fast for his size. He can run a 4.65 forty (per rivals.com). That is faster than some linebackers in the league.

What is Brad’s only negative? He has battled the injury bug. During his career, he has had five surgeries, including one upon his wrist in 2007, and another injury as a result of a car accident. If Brad can escape the bug, I predict that he will have forty five (45) catches, five hundred yards (500) receiving and six (6) touchdowns in 2009, only to do better in 2010.”

Unfortunately, Brad has squandered, in all likelihood, his only opportunity to make a name and living for himself. The Chiefs’ starting TE position was gift wrapped for him, and he failed to make anything of it. He has played in two of the five games to date, and has one catch for eleven yards. He is has been a huge disappointment for the Chiefs.

What do you think happened to Brad Cottam?

To The Critics of Matt Cassel:

Matt Cassel looks really good so far considering the crap he has to deal with. Sure he has a few overthrows, but overall he looks good. He is cool under pressure. He is a competitor. For better or worse, he does not want to give up on a play. He wants to keep fighting. I like his style.

It appears to me that Matt Cassel has the tangibles and intangibles to be a great QB. His foundation is there. However, this Cassel needs fortifications. It is obvious that those fortifications are not present on the team this year. He needs another quality receiver opposite Dwayne Bowe. He needs at least three (3) new linemen, (a center, right guard and right tackle), he needs an upgrade at tight end, and he also needs, and I hate to say it, a better running back. (Sure LJ is getting older, but for God’s sake did you see good old Ricky Williams on Monday night running with speed, power and without hesitation. LJ does not run like that anymore.)

By my count, that is six out of eleven offensive players needed to “build this Cassel”. Matt Cassel’s win column and even stats are not going to be pretty in this first year. But I can tell they will improve when the help arrives. Some of you may recall TrINT Green’s first season (71.1 rating; 56.6% completion rating; 17 TD to 24 Ints). He looked terrible, and I could not tell if he would improve. I can with Cassel. Can you?

Just think about the abovementioned when you begin to criticize or doubt Matt Cassel. Ask yourself: would Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or even Drew Brees fair that much better with the Chiefs’ surrounding talent?

Guess who needs a LB and is flirting with 67 year old Junior Seau? That’s right; the Patriots. Do they make a move for Derrick Johnson?

What about the Buffalo Bills? Didn’ they just lose former Chief Kawika Mitchell for the year? What about the Jaguars? The Eagles; they brought back good old Trotter? The Rams? The Panthers? Can the Bengals use another LB?

We traded away our 7th round pick for TE Jake O-Connell, and probably our sixth round pick for Indukwe and Alleman, so we need more picks. Plus, we need a roster spot should we decide to keep Kolby Smith. The whole league knows DJ is available, so don’t be surprised to see him go.

Talk it up Addicts.

Alright, that is it, these guys have had five games to prove they’re worth. They have been less than stellar. As I alluded to in my earlier post, here are the offensive line personnel tweaking and adjustments that I believe Todd Haley needs to do:

Replace RG Goff with Alleman or Indukwe

Goff has lost it. He doesn’t even seem to have the hunger anymore. KC seems to be his last paycheck, if you know what I mean. Alleman looked good, what do we have to lose. Do you really think Goff is going to be here next year?

Replace C Niswanger with Brian Waters

Niswanger is getting pushed back and around too much. Waters’ power, weight (20 pounds heavier) and experience should keep that from occurring. Center is an easier position to play due to guard help, and Waters is not dominating at LG anymore. Don’t you agree?

After moving LG Waters to Center, Replace him with Wade Smith

Wade Smith did well at LT in the final portion of the game. Wasn’t that drive our best of the day? If he can handle LT, he most assuredly can handle LG. If Albert is still hurting then put Indukwe here until Albert comes back from injury.

Do you agree? Sound off Addicts.

I saw it, did you? Progress. It was at times slapping us across the face on Sunday. I saw some Progress in the games against the Ravens and Eagles, then I saw regress in the games against the Raiders and Giants, but Progress came back on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Progress is what will keep the coaches, players, and fans sane. It is the promise of hope. It is the sign of better things to come. It keeps the players and coaches fighting. It keeps everyone’s spirits up, even in a loss.

Even though we lost that game, I know, you know, and absolutely most importantly, the team knows, that a win is coming, and soon. A tweak here, and an adjustment there, and we are playing like a winning team again. Once the team starts to believe they can be in every game, they will.

Don’t get me wrong, losing is unacceptable. Constant losing is a test of your fanhood. Was the loss heartbreaking? Hell yes!! They all are. However, weren’t you cracking a little smile, (at least on the inside), that we were in that game the whole time? That is far better than getting blown out, right? It has been a while since I have even been able to watch a Chiefs game and smile, even if just a little. We were one or two plays away from winning. Sure we lost, but that loss to me, doesn’t feel as bad, as the Raiders and Giants. Why? Progress. Losing is only palatable if we are making progress. Progress keeps you coming back for more.

The Chiefs are getting better gradually. Did you see Glen Dorsey play one of his better games? Man, he was so close to getting that safety. It is just a matter of time before he has a monster game. Did you see Matt Cassel play his heart out and successfully complete the two minute drill with every Cowboy defender in his face? If he can play that well with all the pressure in his face, then we should have every confidence that he will be a great QB when he has more time.

How many of you saw Alleman come in and play RG very well. Once he was in, it seemed like the right side of the line held up. Larry ran a little more effectively when Alleman was in, there was even more time to pass. Did you see it? More importantly, did the coaching staff see it? Maybe its time for a change at RG for the sake of Progress?

We still have a long ways to go; there are still players on this team, who I believe are impeding Progress. I don’t even have to mention their names. You guys know who they are. But seeing Progress every game, win or lose, puts a smile on my face. How about yours?

We are a young team. It is like seeing your child getting better at something every day. You know eventually he will get better, as long as he is exhibiting Progress. Chief fans, there is no need to get down. Progress is occurring.

The wins will come and when they do, know that you, yes you, were there all along: “giving blood and keeping faith”. “Be patient”.

When you cannot muster the big win, you have to start savoring the little victories. Winning the little battles usually means winning the war. It all starts with the little things, even as little as gaining just one yard.

It is obvious to all that this Offense needs to learn to walk again; (baby steps if you will). We need to win one play at a time. Todd Haley has been “spotlighting” that this week. In his last press conference he focused on eliminating the negative plays. Haley says that the Chiefs lead the league in negative yardage plays and you cannot win that way. Every play must be for a positive gain. I know that statement sounds so obvious that it is moronic, but I expect as a result of Haley’s statement that there will be no more reverses, shotgun draws, screens, risky plays, and the like on first and second down. I expect to see this weekend lots of runs straight up the gut, or off tackle, on first and second down, maybe some quick slants/passes too, all in an effort to set up shorter third downs.

Haley knows, based upon our last four games, that we have no chance when we are third and ten, third and fifteen, etc. Haley also knows that his Defense cannot help them if they are on the field all day. This weekend the offense will be focusing on improving its third down conversion rate by eliminating the negative yards. So when you see on first and second down runs up the middle, or off tackle, for one or two yards, don’t scream and yell, (like I normally do). Haley is just trying to get some positive yards in order to convert those third downs and teach his offense how to walk again.

Ever heard of Accuscore? Well, it’s a computer program which simulates the upcoming game ten thousand (10,000) times to predict the outcome. Accuscore Predicts: Dallas 25.7 and Kansas City 18.1. Since, Coach Haley is getting big into stats the following has to happen for a Chiefs win:

“The Cowboys should be able to control this game running the ball and holding Larry Johnson to under 70 rushing yards. In simulations, the Cowboys are averaging 125 rushing yards vs just 70 for the Chiefs. Tony Romo and Matt Cassel both have passer ratings between 87 and 90 in simulations, but the advantage Dallas has is in pressuring the passer. There is a 60 percent chance of Cassel getting sacked 4+ times which significantly increases the chance of a costly turnover in addition to the lost yardage. If Cassel is sacked 4+ times the Chiefs only have a 21 percent chance of winning. If Cassel is not sacked more than twice their chances improve to 45 percent and if Larry Johnson can actually run for over 70 yards the Chiefs win 66 percent.” Josh Harvey WFAA Sportsblog re: Accuscore

If Larry runs for 70 yards, apparently ten thousand (10,000) simulations predict a high likelihood of a win (66%). Run, Larry, run!!!!!! It will be interesting to see if this is true on Sunday.

Any Thoughts?

So Addicts, How are we going to beat them Cowboys? Who/What do you beleive is our best option? What are the Cowboys weaknesses/strengths?

On Defense, we must absolutely stop Jason Witten (TE). He must be double covered, and not covered by Hali.

On Offense, we must get Bowe involved early with quick slants and short routes. Easier said than done right?

Any thoughts?

Ok, it is time for me to be critical. Of the many things, that occurred this weekend, nothing got me more upset than seeing the Chiefs run the draw play with Larry Johnson. It did not work against the Eagles and it did not work against the Giants. If we do run the shotgun draw, it has to be with someone quicker like Charles or Savage, and most importantly, we have to block. Larry might have the power, but he doesn’t get going quick enough to get up field.

The shotgun draw ran by the Chiefs with Larry near the goal-line against the Giants was pathetic. Two Giants linebackers were waiting for him completely unblocked. Was that a poorly designed play or poorly executed? They called that play at least three times with Larry, and each time the Chiefs lost five to six yards.

Are there any other plays we should get rid of, keep, do? I for one say we need to throw the ball deeper, and run quick slants to Bowe.

Sound Off Addicts?

“Kansas City Chiefs Induced Tourette’s Syndrome” is most often associated with the exclamation of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks or behavior during a Kansas City Chiefs’ ballgame. It is usually expressed out of social or emotional context, and may be spoken in a louder tone or different cadence or pitch than normal conversation and almost always involves the “f” word. The utterances are seemingly uncontrollable.

Sufferers of the syndrome usually go about their weekdays unaffected by the syndrome. However, during the fall season on Sundays, and even rarer, on Mondays, KCCITS sufferers have a complete breakdown or relapse for about three or four hours. Neutral observers often see the following typical behavior and language from the afflicted:

SOME TYPICAL BEHAVIOR:
Extreme pacing;
Kneeling in a praying position;
Throwing objects in an uncontrolled rage;
Continuous grasping of a lucky charm of some sort;
Jumping;
Kicking furniture;
Adorning themselves in everything Chiefs related;
Falling to the ground for no apparent reason;

“Momentum and belief are critically important to every team, but especially those with a new head coach or a new starter at the all-important quarterback position. Belief and momentum are also somewhat reciprocal in that the momentum created by consecutive wins can foster an even greater belief in what the new coach is selling or the new quarterback is doing.” Ross Tucker at cnnsi.com

In my opinion, nothing in sports is more important than “The Big Mo”. We have all seen it a thousand times. Something happens in a game that switches the momentum and more importantly the belief that the team can succeed, and it always does.

When your winning, the wins come easy, and when your losing the loses come even easier. Why? It is because of belief. If you believe you will win, you most likely will.

I am not too critical of Todd Haley, because I feel that he has been handed a big pile of dung and is working his ass off to turn it into gold. One can see the endless hours and stress in his face and eyes. He is already looking worn out and we are three games into the season.

Some of you will be shocked, but I concede that I do have a criticism of Todd Haley and that is this: Haley can be tough and disciplined, (that’s a good thing), I don’t even mind the screaming, but at some point, he needs to start believing in his team. No more player criticism, especially QB controversies. He needs to coach like he knows his team can win. He needs to call plays believing that his players can execute them. He needs to let go of his fear that the team is undisciplined, even if it is. He needs to believe that his team has talent, even if it does not.

He has to trust that Matt Cassel will make the right throws; that Larry will find the right holes; that the O-line will block, and that Bowe will run the right route and make the tough catch. The only way he can do that is by letting it happen. He needs to open it up. If he does not believe that players can execute the tough play, then they won’t either. That is what I am seeing now with Haley. He’s afraid of his own team.

In order to turn our momentum around, the Chiefs need to let go of the fear and play with abandon. A loss is a loss, whether it’s by 1 point or 35 points. Keeping it close is meaningless. The Chiefs have been running scared for the last three years and it needs to stop. It only takes one win for the Chiefs to get their swagger back. Our swagger has to start with Haley. He has to start believing in his team, players and coaches, and stop trying to protect them from failure, because they still are failing.

An interesting article from Curt Popejoy over at draftboardinsider.com:

“Ok, now is the time in the article where I talk about the new head coach, Todd Haley, his playcalling, the coordinators, the ownership and all that other “stuff”. But I’m not going to. Ya know why? Because the players on this team aren’t very good. It’s really that simple. There are by my count 9 starters on both sides of the football for KC, that wouldn’t start for the vast majority of teams in the NFL. When 40% of your starters couldn’t win starting jobs anywhere else, it’s not about coaching or playcalling. If KC wants to win this year, they are going to need to find a team on their schedule and catch them on the right week, and to be frank get more than a little lucky. Circle these dates, Chiefs fans. October 18th and December 20th. Those two games, at Washington and home for Cleveland are going to be their best chances to bust up the donut. In fact that December game against Cleveland could have the no. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft on the line.” – Curt Popejoy

Sound off, Addicts.
