Our staff writers look ahead three years to predict what we will be saying about this year’s draft class in 2020. Next up: WR Jehu Chesson.

Our final look at the 2017 NFL Draft class through future lenses is wide receiver Jehu Chesson, the team’s fourth round choice out of Michigan. Chesson was the third offensive player for whom former General Manager John Dorsey traded up, yet that didn’t stop Chiefs fans from scratching their heads over the pick. They weren’t the only ones as NFL analysts also wondered why Dorsey valued him so highly.

For our 2020 Predictions series, we asked several of our staff writers to give their input on what they believe we will be saying about Jehu Chesson three years from now. The opinions are most widely varied on Chesson compared to prospects like Patrick Mahomes or Kareem Hunt. Check out their takes below and let us know what you think in the comments.

The Predictions:

Jehu Chesson has shown the ability to contribute well on special teams especially as a kick returner. He is still trying to put it all together as a wide reciever but he has made strides every year, and he’s a good candidate to put it all together here in 2020. [Kody Latham]

While my first instinct sitting here is to type “who?” when it comes to 2020, I have seen enough on tape that allows me to keep typing. He has potential to be a safety net in Andy Reid’s offense, and I believe that will be his ceiling. [Chris Taylor]

Much like Demarcus Robinson coming out of Florida in 2016, Jehu Chesson ended up sitting on the bench most of the 2017 season. But being lower on the depth chart gave him plenty of time to work with Patrick Mahomes during his rookie season. Since then it’s been clear it was a match made in heaven. Chesson is big man at 6’3 who has a penchant for making big plays. He’s become Mahomes’s favorite target in the red zone, leading the team in receiving touchdowns. The sky is the limit for the dynamic duo of Maomes and Chesson. [David Thomas]

Jehu Chesson may be the “dud” in Kansas City’s otherwise stellar 2016 draft class. Even though Chesson checks off the height and speed boxes, he has not been able to put it all together as a receiver despite three years of NFL coaching. Chesson has all of the opportunity in the world as the Chiefs continue to look for a true outside threat in their passing game. Chesson may never bloom into a starting caliber wide receiver, but his willingness in the special teams game has kept in on the roster so far. [Thomas Welte]

Jehu Chesson is looking for camp invites after being released by the Chiefs during this past offseason. After three years with the Chiefs, the former fourth round pick out of Michigan was never able to move past being a special teamer. Being a solid teammate and hard worker kept Chesson around, but finding an upgrade for him wasn’t hard. [Britt Zank]
