Bennie Logan spoke to reporters on Wednesday from the Kansas City Chiefs mandatory minicamp about his new environment and Chris Jones.

Bennie Logan knows his place.

Even as an established veteran tasked with filling big shoes in the wake of Dontari Poe’s departure, the former Philadelphia Eagle says he’s well aware of his role as a new addition to the team. While not exactly a rookie, the defensive tackle is doing all he can to learn the ropes, learn from others and slowly earn respect from teammates. He sounds like an ideal addition.

“Even though this is going on my fifth year in the league, when you come into a new team, you’ve got to earn their respect,” says Logan when talking to reporters on Wednesday from the Chiefs minicamp. “You can’t just come in and think you’ll tell a guy what to do. That comes with time. You’ve got to earn their respect, earn your position on the team and that allows you to speak up.”

Logan says that Allen Bailey in particular has been very important in helping him learn the scheme and feel at home. When it comes to Chris Jones, however, Logan admits he is already giving some advice there, since he sees clearly the strong potential in the second-year player.

“I’m familiar with [Jones] from a couple years ago,” says Logan. “We trained back in Baton Rouge, so I’m kinda familiar with him. I always tell him every day, ‘You really don’t understand how scary you can be.’ Chris being a young guy and everything, he’s got a chance to be something special. I stay on him to push him to peak. He did good things last year, and that’s good and everything, but I want him to do better.

“He’s a guy who can really establish himself as being a dominant defensive tackle and end in this league if he continues to work hard.”

Fans can thank running back Spencer Ware for helping bring Logan in to Kansas City. He’ll help stuff the run and anchor the defensive line for at least the next season, as he signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs early in free agency. As a former Louisiana State alumni, Logan said Ware was a trusted source on the free agent market.

“I talked to Spencer during my free agency,” he says. “He was telling me about the chemistry they have here, how tight they are as a family and just the scheme. I played with Spencer at LSU, so he’s a guy I trust. I’ve seen the things that Kansas City has been doing over the years, and I want to be a part of helping them go farther than they went last year. On offense, defense, special teams, they’ve been a great team all around and that’s something I wanted to be a part of.”
