The Kansas City Chiefs have made a couple of roster moves, including signing tight end Orson Charles.

Some roster moves made on Thursday by the Kansas City Chiefs brings another former Georgia Bulldog to the offense with the signing of tight end Orson Charles. The Chiefs also signed safety Damariay Drew. In the process, they waived a couple rookie free agents who had shown promise in former Louisville wide receiver Jamari Staples and Oregon State safety Devin Chappell.

Charles is a veteran tight end who first entered the league with the Cincinnati Bengals as their fourth round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The team primarily utilized him as a fullback. Charles played in 29 total games his first two seasons in the NFL with the Bengals, starting 6 of them, and had 9 rushes for 109 yards in that span of time. Charles then spent time on the New Orleans Saints practice squad and some time out of the NFL before resurfacing last season with the Detroit Lions for a couple games.

Where Charles fits on the Chiefs is an interesting proposition. He could be competition for Anthony Sherman or perhaps as a blocking tight end to be in competition with Gavin Escobar, Demetrius Harris, Ross Travis and others.

Drew is a 5’11, 200 lb. defensive back who played his college ball at Cal. He tore his ACL in 2016, so perhaps he’s back to form and ready to show what he can do when he’s healthy. He joins a tremendous competition at defensive back for what little reps there are left in a secondary that’s already loaded.
