Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel will miss several weeks this summer due to a thumb injury.

The Tennessee Titans will be without their primary back-up quarterback Matt Cassel for the next several weeks as he recovers from a thumb injury suffered on Tuesday during the team’s OTAs.

Cassel is in his second season with the Titans, spelling Marcus Mariota on occasion and providing a veteran presence behind the ascending starter. Last season, Cassel was forced to start one game and play in four and won his only start. He completed 30 of 51 passes (59%) with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Cassel has been relegated to back-up duty for some time after spending several years as the starter for the Kansas City Chiefs. Cassel parlayed a single impressive 10-5 season subbing for Tom Brady with the New England Patriots into a much longer-than-average career in the NFL, although most Chiefs fans would rather forget his tenure with the team. Cassel’s record in four years in K.C. is 19-28, a stretch that included one 10-win season for the Chiefs. However the Chiefs were often among the NFL’s worst with Cassel as a starter.

Cassel has a career record of 36-44 in the NFL over the course of 13 years. He’s thrown 103 touchdown passes compared to 79 interceptions and has a career passer rating of 79.2.

Without Cassel, the Titans will turn to former Chiefs quarterback Alex Tanney as a primary back-up along with Tyler Ferguson, who just graduated from Western Kentucky.
