At his press conference on Friday, John Dorsey says the quarterbacks in this draft class aren’t ready to start from day one.

It’s not that John Dorsey doesn’t believe they’re not talented. Clearly that’s not the case at the rate that the team is checking out the quarterback options. It’s just that the Kansas City Chiefs general manager doesn’t necessarily believe any of the quarterbacks available are ready to start from day one.

That’s bad news for teams like the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns or any other number of franchises who have poor choices before them on the depth chart for Week 1 of the upcoming season. Many of those teams are likely to pass on a quarterback early for this very reason—that no one is quite ready yet. The good news is that means many of those names will fall to teams who can afford to let them sit for a bit—teams like the Kansas City Chiefs.

Specifically, Dorsey praised the talent levels but stated his concerns about their readiness.

"I think there are some talented athletes within this class. I think they have different skill sets that vary – some are better runners, or this and this. Now making the transition from college to the professional level, that’s a different animal. Are there any sure fire, bang starters right off the bat? You may take a poll on other GMs, but I personally don’t think so. Are there some quarterbacks who have enough traits and skills to be developed down the road? Yeah there sure is."

For the Chiefs this is an ideal scenario. Clearly Dorsey is doing his homework and believes that some of these players are talented. That should equal a pick of some kind early in the draft. The question is whether a talent like Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes can fall far enough for the Chiefs to consider taking him, or moving up at least to get him.

Either way, no matter which quarterback the team brings home from draft weekend, he will be able to sit and learn under Alex Smith for at least one year and maybe even two. The Chiefs have a solid starter already on the roster with no real urgency to move him. Smith has gone 41-20 as the Chiefs starter in the last four years, so the Chiefs will only make a move when and if it makes sense for that bottom line. Fortunately if Dorsey wants to make a move, the quarterback situation is tailor-made for K.C. to take advantage.
