The Kansas City Chiefs are likely going to get a single late-round compensatory pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, if things stand as they are in free agency.

The 2018 NFL Draft order is just beginning to take shape as teams make moves that will affect the compensatory picks for next year’s draft. Despite the fact that several weeks remain before the 2017 edition, next year’s order is already being affected by free agent signings around the league. Despite the Kansas City Chiefs relative lack of activity with regards to the open market, they’ve already begun to figure out their own picks.

As Nick Korte of Over the Cap says, the Chiefs should expect some form of lower-round compensation in return for losing quarterback Nick Foles to the Philadelphia Eagles. While they also lost free agent running back Knile Davis, he’s not likely to generate the kind of contract terms (as yet unknown) that would necessitate a compensatory pick.

The Chiefs would have received something for their loss of Dontari Poe to the Atlanta Falcons, but John Dorsey filled the hole at defensive tackle with a contract that came in at nearly the same total with Bennie Logan. That acquisition offset the loss of Poe, which the Chiefs can forget about any future reward there.

It’s also unlikely that any of the other free agents lost by the Chiefs will create a compensatory pick, unless a player like Josh Mauga receives a higher amount than expected on the open market. In addition, Jamaal Charles will not yield a comp pick due to the fact that the Chiefs released him (whereas someone like Foles just didn’t have a contract option picked up).
