NFL free agency rumors: Chicago Bears named leaders for Mike Glennon

The Chicago Bears are reportedly going to be the frontrunners to land free agent quarterback Mike Glennon, who should replace Jay Cutler as their starter.

The quarterback carousel is interesting to watch this offseason as NFL free agency prepares to get underway. From young quarterbacks who haven’t started in years like Mike Glennon to unpolished products like Tyrod Taylor to returning veterans like Tony Romo, there’s no guarantee on the free agent market. However, there is reason for optimism for teams hoping for a fresh start under center.

CBS Sports Jason La Canfora says the Chicago Bears are the frontrunners to land Glennon and are prepared to offer him a significant free agent offer. The Bears are contributing a quarterback of their own to the mix of available players in Jay Cutler, but apparently they feel strongly that Glennon is an upgrade. However, there’s no real way of knowing that without simply handing over the reins and the reps.

Glennon has been languishing behind Jameis Winston with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since Winston was taken at No. 1 overall. Glennon flashed some promise before losing the job, but Winston was clearly the better quarterback with a much higher ceiling. It’s interesting that Tampa Bay couldn’t flip Glennon for any sort of future draft assets before losing him to the market but suddenly he’s a hot commodity now in free agency. Such is desperate life in the NFL.

Glennon would be one of the most likely quarterbacks for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason if they were to explore the free agent market for a replacement for Alex Smith. The Chiefs are doing their due diligence in interviewing all of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft, so they’re clearly thinking ahead to next year when life beyond Smith is a real possibility. Glennon would be one of the few options, along with Tyrod Taylor, that makes sense as a signing, given that each is still very young and offers hope for some bigger potential than what has been seen in the league so far.

Glennon hasn’t started an NFL game since 2014 (same as Tony Romo for perspective) and holds a 5-13 record as a starting quarterback over two seasons with the Bucs. He’s certainly matured since then and the Bucs were a horrid team talent-wise when he was starting (hence their ability to land the No. 1 overall pick). Still it doesn’t warm the hearts of fans to look at that bottom line. Glennon has thrown 30 touchdowns and only 15 picks in his career, so there’s reason for hope, and the Bears would likely go all-in if they land Glennon, surrounding him with a scheme that fits his strength and hides his weaknesses.

If Dorsey has any interest in the free agent market and players like Glennon, it will be a complete surprise since there’s been no rumors to point to any potential move. That said, that’s often how Dorsey work, emerging from surprise meetings with Mitchell Schwartz, for example, to announce a new signing.
