The Kansas City Chiefs have officially been awarded 4 compensatory picks in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The official results are in from the NFL on Friday, and 32 total compensatory picks have been awarded, including four to the Kansas City Chiefs. As explained by the NFL, compensatory picks are potentially given when a team loses “more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year.”

For 2017, the Chiefs have earned the following:

  • Third round pick (No. 104 overall)
  • Fifth round pick (No. 182 overall)
  • Sixth round pick (No. 218 overall)
  • Sixth round pick (No. 220 overall)

This is the first season that compensatory draft picks can be traded, under a new rule change made by the NFL. The Chiefs have, however, lost a sixth round pick this year due to the Jeremy Maclin tampering charge, which means the team has a total of 10 draft selections between their official draft slots and comp picks.

Despite signing Mitchell Schwartz last year to a free agent contract, the Chiefs suffered significant losses in free agency, including cornerback Sean Smith to the Oakland Raiders.

The Chiefs also lost offensive lineman Jeff Allen to the Houston Texans, safety Tyvon Branch to the Arizona Cardinals, quarterback Chase Daniel to the Philadelphia Eagles and swing tackle Donald Stephenson to the Denver Broncos.
