Well, we know that the Kansas City Chiefs won’t be going 16-0. Other than that, tough to say who or what this team is.

Kansas City could not come back for a second straight game, mostly due to self-inflicted nonsense. Houston was able to hold on in a hideous affair, winning 19-12. The Chiefs gave up 10 points off of two turnovers in their own end in the first half, one time with a Mitch Morse snap over Alex Smith’s head, and another because Spencer Ware fumbled.

This was one of those games where the Chiefs couldn’t get out of their own way. A 105-yard kick return by Tyreek Hill was called back because of penalty. The offensive line was an absolute disaster, mostly because Mitch Schwartz could not block a rehabbing J.J. Watt and John Simon.

After the first drive of the day, Kansas City’s defense looked very good. The Chiefs never allowed a touchdown on a drive that didn’t start outside its own 30-yard line, so that’s the positive. Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson each had sacks and looked spry, but the offense completely torpedoed any hope of a victory.

Alex Smith will get plenty of heat for this mess, and rightfully so. He was inaccurate and indecisive even when he had time. Overall, Smith was 20-of-37 for 186 yards and no touchdowns. Smith was certainly not helped out by his receivers. Demetrius Harris dropped what would have been a 30-yard completion. Jeremy Maclin dropped two throws right in his hands, and Albert Wilson continued his longstanding tradition of dropping catchable balls.

The story of this game might be found in the effort of Marcus Peters. Peters was beat for a touchdown, then scored an interception in the end zone, then got a taunting penalty, then got another interception.

All told, this game was a mess. The offense shares blame, The coaching shares blame. On the plus side, the Chiefs are fine in terms of record. They are 1-1 and headed home.
