If you play for the Kansas City Chiefs, you should want to play in the secondary.

The Chiefs are one of the most talented teams in football, both on offense and defense. Few teams are rolling with Travis Kelce, Jeremy Maclin and Jamaal Charles on offense with Marcus Peters, Derrick Johnson, Eric Berry, Dontari Poe, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston and Jaye Howard on defense.

So why would you want to be in the secondary? Because there is opportunity. Kansas City only has three of the five starters (yes, the nickel corner is a starter) set in stone, with Berry, Peters and Ron Parker secure.

While Phillip Gaines is certainly looking like a starter, he is going to be pushed by a trio of rookies in KeiVarae Russell, Eric Murray and D.J. White. We also can’t forget about second-year man Steven Nelson, who can play both inside and outside the numbers.

It’s going to be fascinating to watch this competition throughout OTAs, minicamp and training camp. Russell might be the best bet to lock down a spot considering he’s the highest-drafted rookie, going in the third round.

Regardless, if you are a competitor, you want to be in the secondary. Let the fight begin.
