Chiefs 2015: This could be a great year in Kansas City

Another preseason game is in the books, the and the Chiefs notch another victory to remain undefeated.

Each previous week I have noted how little meaning those wins have. Likewise, the drubbing of the Titans does not help the Chiefs getting any closer to making the playoffs. Much less the Holy Grail of actually winning a playoff game (dare I say championship?). It did, however, allow us to get a better understanding of what these Chiefs will look like once the regular season starts up.

As you are probably aware, Week 3 of the preseason is the most accurate representation of what the team will look like when the games begin to count. The game when coaches do things like actually draw up a game plan. And that game just so happens to be K.C.’s best showing to date. (Parenthetically, tonight’s game against the Rams will likely be the least accurate barometer of what we can expect in the regular season, which is why I am ignoring it for this post)

While it may have been fun watching Chase Daniel find Fred Williams in the end zone, we all knew that those two players are not going to be focal points of the offense come Sept. 13th. Rather, Alex Smith will be feeding the ball to Jamaal Charles, Travis Kelce, and Jeremy Maclin. And those are the names that took center stage on against Tennessee.

The maligned Smith went 16-for-18 in pass attempts and ended the night with 171 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 143.3. A quarterback who is known for not throwing downfield enough ended the night with an average yards per attempt of 9.5 (a half yard better than Daniel’s outstanding performance against the Cardinals).

He also managed to find Maclin, who impressed many, seven times for 65 yards and a touchdown. Those are not bad numbers for a full game, much less when playing only a partial game.

The backups also continued turning in great performances as well. Williams had another outstanding game, grabbing five balls for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Aaron Murray also had a successful night completing 15 of 20 passes with two touchdowns and one interception. He ended the game with a passer rating of 107.5.

And while most of the attention in the preseason has been on the offense, and specifically the offensive line and receivers, the defense has been having quite a bit of success as well.
