I will be the first to admit that it can be hard to give a darn about the preseason, even with the Kansas City Chiefs are playing.

I used to get excited about the idea that we get sold every year, telling us that when when those first four games arrive, that “Football is back!” But I have watched too many preseason games to really believe that anymore.

Yes, my team will dress in their official uniforms and go out to play four full quarters against another NFL team. They keep score, and the refs call penalties and everything. But the best players, and the ones we are usually most interested in, tend not to give their all and spend the majority of the game hanging out on the sideline. That doesn’t generally feel like football is really back.

Still though, all is not lost. Besides simply being a step closer to the regular season and meaningful football, here are five reasons to care about the Chiefs preseason matchup against the Cardinals this weekend.

1. Injuries matter

Injuries always suck. Always. It doesn’t matter whether it happens over Fourth of July, in training camp, preseason, or Week 16 of the regular season. No one wants to see an injury.

Unfortunately, they are usually one of the biggest storylines of training camp and the preseason. Get hurt in either, and a player can dramatically alter the outlook of a season for his team before it even begins (just ask the Texans about that). That is the one of the main reasons that starters see so little action.

The Chiefs already have to face the potential of having Dontari Poe and Sean Smith out of the lineup to begin the year. For Kansas City is going to live up to full potential this season, no one else should be on that list.
