Coffee with the Chiefs – Eric Berry returns

Good morning, Addicts! The Kansas City Chiefs are entering their second day of practices, and strong safety Eric Berry is ready to go once more. Berry, only eight months after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, has been cleared for activity and took part in Wednesday’s practice.

On Friday, the veterans will show up to camp and complete the roster, with the official first day of camp being Saturday. I will be there, covering the action from St. Joe’s. Now, onto the news.

Eric Berry returns to practice cancer-freeMark Inabinett of AL.com

"Berry underwent chemotherapy at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute. He took chemo every two weeks, finishing on May 13. Berry chose to have the chemotherapy delivered via an IV rather than through a peripherally inserted central catheter. A PICC line would have made intravenous access easier, but also would have limited his ability to work out."

After beating cancer, there is no telling what Berry can doSam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star

"James Berry told his son it was OK, that he didn’t need to be strong every day, and that more than anything else, he just needed to get a little better today. Then a little better again tomorrow. Athletes aren’t made in a day. Cancer survivors aren’t, either."

Chiefs sign cornerback to fill out rosterJoel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride

"The Chiefs had an open roster spot after cutting DB Justin Cox last week. With the news that Dontari Poe is injured, there’s likely to be another open roster spot if he goes on the PUP list. So one of those spots will be going to Penny while the other will be going to a safety you might know named Eric freakin’ Berry."

Previewing the Chiefs defense of 2015Craig Stout of Arrowhead Pride

"In 2014, the Chiefs were pretty darn good against the pass, even with losing Eric Berry halfway through the season, and not having Marcus Cooper play up to the hyped potential at the beginning of the year. All of the secondary’s big bright spots return this season, and with the new additions, corner is STACKED. Sean Smith had the best season of his career last year and looks to repeat it to net a LARGE contract."
