Chiefs release Justin Cox after domestic violence charge

In the most incredibly anticipated move of the day, the Kansas City Chiefs released cornerback Justin Cox on Tuesday afternoon, one day after he was arrested on charges of aggravated domestic violence. This is the second time that Cox has been charged with domestic violence since November.

Some people in the media are not pleased with the way things went down for the rookie:

Look, I get that side of it, and there is an argument to be made. The problem is two-fold though for general manager John Dorsey and the Chiefs. First, domestic violence is finally the hot-button issue that it should be. Teams are getting absolutely hammered for holding onto guys who have been charged with this type of stuff. Is that fair to Cox if he is innocent? No. But that is the way life works.

Secondly, he is an undrafted free agent. Whether people like it or not, that stuff matters. If Marcus Peters had been in this situation, Kansas City likely would have released a statement about looking into the matter and not commenting until all the facts emerge. Instead, releasing Cox just gets rid of the headache altogether.

Personally, I believe Dorsey did the right thing. Cox was probably not going to make the team anyway, and he sealed his fate by either committing a crime, or at the least putting himself in a bad position for the second time since November. Sometimes, you just need to cut bait and move on.
