Chiefs 2015: Could Spencer Ware be part of the future?

Last week, we explored Charcandrick West and his opportunity to make the Kansas CIty Chiefs opening day roster. This week, we explore another running back competing for a roster spot, former LSU running back Spencer Ware.

Obviously, we view running back as having an opening, especially a third running back. Last week, when discussing West, we mentioned his versatility, both catching the football and running, even highlighting his ability to return kicks. This is not who Ware is. However, he has a shot for other reasons. We’ll discuss that here.

Ware is the only power running back currently on the roster. Sure, Charles has shown an ability to get tough yards, converting short-yardage plays, but no other running back has really shown that ability to do so. Ware is a pure power, between-the-tackles type of kid. When we look at his NFL Draft combine profile it describes Ware as a “no nonsense runner” and “excels at short yardage.” Both of these qualities would be nice to have as a backup running back on the roster.

Another trait, that at least this columnist finds valuable, is Ware’s ability be provide depth at fullback. When Ware was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, he was done so as a fullback. While he only appeared in two games with Seattle in 2013 (he was not listed on a roster for 2014) Ware has experience at the NFL level competing for time and a roster spot.

The biggest issue with Ware, outside of his legal troubles which we’ll touch on, is that he’s not fast. At all. In fact, coming out of LSU, Ware clocked an ever-quick 4.62 40-yard dash. Look back at his NFL draft profile page, where he is described simply as “not a very fast running back, lacks an extra gear.” He certainly won’t run away from anyone, especially at the NFL level, which is why his ability to provide depth at fullback could help in his effort to make the team.

As we touched on earlier, Ware has had issues with the law in the past. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI twice in the 2014, both in July and September of 2014, as detailed by Rotoworld. It should be noted that the first DUI from January was later thrown out later that year due to a technicality, the arrest still took place.  It is also worth noting that he was suspended for an important game against Auburn in 2011 due to violations of the team drug policy, per ESPN.com.

In summation, while Ware certainly has a chance to make the Chiefs roster coming out of camp, the odds are against him. His ability to provide help in short yardage and at fullback are nice, but it’s uncertain if those traits are enough to get him into the regular season.  He’ll have to earn his way into a roster spot. As we are now just weeks away from practice and training camp starting, we certainly can’t wait to hear pads popping, and see just what the Chiefs have.
