Three Chiefs UDFAs and a free agent wide receiver to watch

As we catch our breaths after the NFL draft, a report about three undrafted free agents puts the spotlight on these longshots.

On this episode of Roughing the Kicker, Joshua Brisco takes an in-depth look at three undrafted free agents the Chiefs paid up for, talks about an ex-Raider leaving the Chiefs and an ex-Raider who could be a perfect fit in Kansas City, and touches on other big news around the NFL including La’el Collins’ new home and if the air will be taken out of the Patriots’ 2015 season.

A report from @RavensInsider said the Kansas City Chiefs gave $10,000 signing bonuses to three undrafted free agent rookies. In NFL terms, $10,000 is pocket change, but I believe it points to a larger hope the Chiefs have for these three UDFAs. Of the three, I believe that one will be a game-one starter and that the other two have a chance to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. On this episode of Roughing the Kicker, find out why the Chiefs thought these players were worth the extra money and what they bring to the table.

Are you in favor of the Chiefs signing James Jones?

The Chiefs released Terrelle Pryor this week, which made me very sad. I hoped that Pryor would push Chase Daniel for the veteran backup quarterback spot, but he did not even make it to training camp. Now the Chiefs are in an interesting situation with their quarterbacks: right back where they were last year. Many of us thought the Chiefs would lift Aaron Murray to the backup role and go elsewhere for the next man in line, shipping Daniel elsewhere in favor of cap space, but what will they do now?

The Raiders released wide receiver James Jones, and even after the Chiefs drafted Chris Conley in the third round, I believe that Jones could provide a textbook number two receiver threat across from Jeremy Maclin. Alternate between De’Anthony Thomas, Albert Wilson and Jason Avant at slot, get Conley up to speed at whatever pace he needs, let Da’Rick Rogers fight for a roster spot, and I would argue that this would be a better set of pass-catchers than the Chiefs have seen in quite some time.

Also on this episode, I talk about a potential new position for De’Anthony Thomas, the future of Mike Catapano, the change in the Chiefs’ scouting department, the potential for a Tom Brady suspension, and the season-ending injury of the number three overall pick from the NFL draft.
