Should Albert Wilson start for the Kansas City Chiefs?

Last year, the Kansas City Chiefs had Dwayne Bowe and then a bunch of nonsense at the No. 2 receiver position. Bowe, for all his flaws, was easily the best receiver on the team with a collection of has-been and never-will-be players lining up on the other side.

Then, out of nowhere, Albert Wilson came to the forefront over the final four games of the season. Despite not making a catch in the Week 17 contest against the San Diego Chargers, Wilson amassed 12 catches on 20 targets for 209 yards in December. The numbers are not eye-popping, but certainly worthy of mention for an undrafted rookie out of Georgia State.

Wilson, 22, is a 5’9, 200-pound speedster who showed the ability to run quality routes and gain separation. Still, the sample size is tiny and Wilson did not come into the NFL with any fanfare. So can Andy Reid rely on Wilson to play the Robin to Jeremy Maclin’s Batman this year, or should Wilson be heaped into a support role alongside Jason Avant?

With Junior Hemingway proving he belongs on special teams, and A.J. Jenkins and Donnie Avery released, Wilson is the best option on the roster outside of Maclin. Avant belongs in the slot, getting some time when De’Anthony Thomas needs water.

Holding the No. 18 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, general manager John Dorsey has a litany of options. Surely, a few of them include receivers ranging from Breshad Perriman and Jaelen Strong to Dorial Green-Beckham and DeVante Parker. Should Dorsey pull the trigger on a pass-catcher or give the Chiefs help elsewhere on the roster, content with Wilson getting a majority of the snaps opposite Maclin?

I’m not sure Wilson is a legitimate starter. Yet, I’m hoping Kansas City gives the kid a chance.
