Dontari Poe is a 340-pound polar bear who moves like a frightened squirrel, which is terrifying on multiple levels.

Though he didn’t defend the run as effectively as the year prior—a partial byproduct of not having Derrick Johnson, Joe Mays and Eric Berry behind him—Poe remains one of the most dominant nose tackles in the league.

John Dorsey about the potential move. “It will probably be more towards training camp,” Dorsey said.

Obviously, that’s not a definitive answer. But it sounds like he’s, at the very least, anticipating the commitment.

If the Kansas City Chiefs had heaps of cap space, it’d probably be better to extend Poe now; guys like Ndamukong Suh are weeks away from emptying banks vaults, which means that No. 92’s market value is only going to rise.

However, considering the Chiefs are on a Ramen budget, the fifth-year option—which would lock him up throughout 2016—is the best alternative.

Poe has led (subscription required) NFL DTs in snaps in each of the last two seasons. Despite that, he’s also the only Chiefs defensive Pro Bowler who—excluding the 2013 finale, when Reid rested his starters—has played in every game since the regime change.

On the other hand, if the Chiefs roll the dice and pass, you’ll be seeing the same slew of Justin Houston headlines next year—they’ll just have a different name attached.
