King made some waves with his next statement about the Chiefs and quarterback Alex Smith. While discussing the possibility of Smith re-signing with the Chiefs, King brought up an interesting theory he concocted based on his conversations with Andy Reid.

It is hard to believe Reid would choose Smith over a future Hall of Fame quarterback, but one could see some of the reasons why Reid would be so in love with Smith and his ability. The key with Smith is his protection of the ball and his intelligence on the field, and the presence and stability he provides off the field.

McNabb, while being one of the better quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL, was something of a headache for Reid in Philadelphia. He would whine and complain to the media, makes silly decisions in crucial parts of the game, and never seemed to get over that hump. He also didn’t appear to have a stable relationship with Reid.

Smith, while maybe not as physically gifted as McNabb, possess many of the qualities needed to win football games in Reid’s system. His stability in the locker room, the quality of the relationship between him and Reid, and his skill set within the offense could easily be very appealing to Reid. While I think it would be foolish to choose Smith over McNabb, one can see the line of reasoning with King’s assertion.

Given King’s thoughts on Smith and Reid, it is hard to think a deal between the Chiefs and Smith won’t happen sometime at the end of the month. John Dorsey is certainly going to hold out for the best contract he can get but one would think there would be a significant relationship strain between Reid and Dorsey if a Smith deal doesn’t get done, at least based on King’s statement.
