Alex Smith is saying all the right things but will he have a new contract with the Kansas City Chiefs soon?
This is a question still looming with the Chiefs heading into training camp, along with the contract situation with Justin Houston. The Kansas City Star’s Randy Covitz caught up with Smith recently and tweeted this out to the world.
#Chiefs QB Alex Smith on contract talks: I’d love to have it done. I love Kansas City, I love the coaching staff, the players …” story soon

Kansas City has the tools to get a deal done with Smith in the near future. Estimates have the Chiefs with around $10 million in salary cap space heading into camp, a number which could grow depending on how the final 53-man roster shapes out. The ability to restructure this year’s deal for Smith could put the Chiefs in a situation where they open up cap space in the future while still giving Smith something close to his contract demands.
At the very least it would seem Smith is willing to get a deal done with Chiefs and be patient about the timing. Both he and Houston are expected to be at St. Joseph when camp starts next week. The tone certainly seems better than the one in Houston with Andre Johnson at the very least.
