The Attack Of The 2013 Draft Class

Sometimes I ask myself questions about “Why the Chiefs did this” or “Why the Chiefs did that” when the answer is right in front of me. I’ve been re-training my ears to listen more closely to Andy Reid and John Dorsey more carefully as time goes by. Sometimes I’m looking for them to take action, when it’s become apparent to me that at times their “inaction” is the action that speaks louder than words.

Like any of the many other Chiefs Free Agency periods, which I have covered in previous years, I find myself saying, “Gee, I wish the Chiefs would give so-and-so a look.”

However, this year’s free agency approach seems to be based a great deal on last year’s draft. It appears they’re counting on their following draftees coming through… big time… in 2014.

LT Eric Fisher– someone must feel pretty comfortable with Mr. Fisher moving to LT in his sophomore year, right? Can’t you hear Andy & John singing in the back room,  “We’re So Sorry, Uncle Albert”…….

QB Alex Smith– it’s hard to imagine anyone at One Arrowhead Plaza suggesting the Chiefs pick up a QB this year — in Free Agency or the draft — to replace the player they used a second round pick in a trade for last year.

TE Travis Kelce– TE Travis Kelce (and free agent TE acquisition Anthony Fasano last year), should both have strong showings in 2014. When John Dorsey keeps talking about… “The Plan”… I’m pretty sure the TEs are a big part of it. However, after the Chiefs brief dalliance with TE Brandon Pettigrew, who ultimately re-signed with the Lions, their trust in Travis Kelce’s rehab progress, following microfracture surgery, may be faltering.

RB Knile Davis– if the Chiefs sign a RB in FA there’ll be shock across the Chiefs Empire because Mr. Davis came through late in the season, especially in their playoff game.

ILB Nico Johnson– the addition of Joe Mays alone appears to have “shared time” and “competition” written all over it. At least that’s what Mays is saying, and Mays appears to be saying so many of the right things. Check it out.

FS Sanders Commings– the return of FS Husain Abdullah, the addition of Sanders Commings and the subtraction of Kendrick Lewis… should equal a vast improvement at Free Safety.

DE Mike Catapano– everytime I see Catapano… he flashes. I’m pretty sure the men with “eyes on the field” have noticed too. The Chiefs may add strength here in the draft or FA but you can almost hear the Arrowhead announcer echoing, “Tackle by Mike Catapano” repeatedly.

After all, what are John and Andy supposed to do? You can be 100% sure they will be counting on last year’s crop to ripen.
